well, good morning. welcome back. we're live on the ground right in san francisco amongst all of the these cars and some drivers this morning are slightly -- a slightly different commute. the folsom street offramp, shut down late last night. it's a realignment project. it will be closed for the next six months. ktvu's alex savidge is out there right now. coming up in two minutes, he will tell you more about what traffic is bunching up right about here. also he will tell you how you can get around this as well. you need to know that. good morning. thank you for joining us. tuesday, september 23rd. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic and steve, happy autumn to you. >> first full day of fall, that's correct. low clouds there. now the front is still up here.
8:31 am
i don't want to say i'm giddy or anything. but thursday and friday look good. they are looking good. not a lot of rain for us. this is the best system we've seen. it's still a day away. we had some 40s this morning. now we're seeing 50s and 60s. we'll see some patchy low clouds here. they are starting to stack up on the marin coast and sonoma coast. heading down. this system will take aim at northern california first and then us. but the back side of this looks like it could be interesting and the coolest air of the season will arrive. it will feel like it. we have a couple of days to go. near normal temperatures. 80s for some. 70s for others. here's sal. all right, steve. happening now, it's a big change for many commuters heading into san francisco this morning. the folsom street exit from the bay bridge is closed to traffic and will remain closed for the next six months. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live in san francisco down from ground zero. alex what's it like out there. >> reporter: well, we haven't seen much in the bay of backups
8:32 am
so far this morning. you could see behind us, the cars are beginning to back up ever so slightly. things a bit slow as folks are coming off the bay bridge here. this is where we are at the bottom of what is the folsom street and the fremont street exit. that first exit on the right- hand side as you get off the bay bridge and obviously, it will be busy at this time of morning, but it doesn't appear to be any more busy than it normally would be around this time. normally you can go left which all of these drivers are going, and that puts you onto fremont street or you can go to the right to folsom. but folsom is closed entirely. those lanes will remain closed because of this construction project. it got underway last night. the work is being done to realign the entire offramp and make it safer for all of the people who walk in this area south of market. this is what the new offramp will look like. essentially, the fremont street lanes will be running parallel
8:33 am
to each other and with this long closure in effect, there's some commuters coming into the city this morning and they say they will be bracing for long backups for the foreseeable future. however, other drivers are not too worried. >> i heard it on the radio. but i didn't think that there was anything i needed to worry about. i didn't think it would affect me. >> well, it's gonna make my commute longer. i come in from the east bay. we're all funneling in. and it's just -- it will be a bit of a challenge. >> reporter: another reason for the project, to remove the folsom street offramp from a nearby piece of land that's adjacent to the freeway to allow for future residential development on that piece of property. county transportation officials are hoping the drivers will find alternate routes to ease congestion. one option is to get off at fremont street and work your way around to wherever you need to be. the other on hun is and -- option is that's encouraged to take is the harrison street

exit. the first exit on your left- hand side as soon as you cross the bridge and come into the city. for more how to navigate the closure, let's go back to sal in the traffic center. good morning, alex. it looks like people have taken the advice that we've been giving. this is a very normal-looking backup. the approach is 25 minutes across the span. if you are driving on the lower deck of the bay bridge, this has no effect on you and the traffic has been fine. listen, 880, though, we have to talk about this. 880 northbound is light. that's the only reason -- the only reason, there's a crash northbound 880 at 98. i can put it on a map for you. northbound 880 one lane is taken away by this. you might want to consider using 580 as an alternate route. 8800 is backed up into hayward. either put the trip off or use 580 as an alternate.
