daylight. a woman is kidnapped at gunpoint outside her east bay home. trouble on the peninsula at one high school campus. we'll tell you what's keeping kids out of class this morning. >> reporter: it's a brand-new school but officials worry students will not enroll because of the neighborhood it sits in. find out how the school board plans to lure students. "mornings on 2" starts now. build it and they will come. that was the hope for the new $54 million willie brun junior middle school in san francisco's bayview. but school officials are worried about enrollment because of past problems. so they are offering an incentive to parents. tara moriarty is live at the high school and will join us live to tell us what that

and then overnight tonight into tomorrow for us here. cloudy, drizzle and then some sunbreaks. 80s for some. 70s for others. we'll start cooling it down tonight and tomorrow with the rain. here's sal. we have just cleared a crash -- not "we." chp just cleared a crash and the traffic is recovering. it just got away with it here. they took it away on the tow truck. but the traffic is still pretty slow on 80 westbound from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze, about 37 minutes. i want to take a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that should be more full. it's about a 25 to 30-minute drive getting into san francisco from this point. there are no major incidents. now, in the south bay, there's a new crash northbound 85 right at 87. it's a motorcycle crash. it's blocking at least one of the lanes. but traffic is not as bad as we thought it would be. it is a little bit slow on 101 and 280. i also want to mention there is a significant power outage in

east oakland near high street between 580 and 880 in some of the neighborhoods there. if you come up on a signal that's not working, you should street it as a four-way stop. 7:02. back to the desk. new this morning, in san jose, a very busy road just reopened after a man who was trying to cross the street was hit and killed by a passing car. this happened early this morning near the area of tully road and lanai avenue. police closed off the area for several hours as the investigation took place but they just reopened it. ktvu's janine de la vega is there now with an update. the very latest on the investigation. janine? >> reporter: dave, as you mentioned, the eastbound baines of tully road near lanai just reopened in the past half-hour. police have wrapped up their investigation and are going to look at who is at fault. what we do know is a man is crossing the street where you see that jack in the box there in the distance when he was hit. police say the accident happened at 12:30 this morning. a car traveling eastbound on tully hit the man crossing the

street. police say he was not in a crosswalk. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the car stopped and cooperated with officers. tully road is a very busy roadway. police will be investigating whether the car was speeding or if the driver was distracted. they do tell us that it doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol played a factor. the driver was not arrested. the identity of the victim has not been revealed. it's unknown yet if his family even knows. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are also investigating a deadly shooting last night at a home where two men were killed. a third person was wounded. now, an emergency call came in to go to a house on rancho drive about 9:00 last night. when police arrived, they found two men had been shot. both were pronounced dead at the scene. a third person, a woman was also shot. she was rushed to the hospital.

her injuries are described as non-life-threatening. >> it's a crime. we're trying to do as much as we can. it's awful that someone came into someone's home but we'll do the best we can to apprehend the suspects. >> investigators don't know if a motive -- they don't have any suspects. they believe there were two shooters. the two people killed were a 49- year-old father and his 29-year- old son. the injured woman we're told is the son's girlfriend. oakland police are searching for two men that they say fired shots at another car. the victims say they were driving in east oakland yesterday when two men in another car wearing masks started firing shots at them. the driver says the masked men followed them onto northbound 880. one of the bullets went through the windshield. another one shredded a rear tire. now, that car went off the road at 66th avenue. the shooters kept driving. 7:05. contra costa county is just one

of four counties in the nation to receive a $2.6 million federal grant for domestic violence programs. an anti-violence organization will partner with the county and police agencies to launch the new program. it will allow police to conduct immediate assessments meant to gauge and offender's -- an offender's likelihood of committing murder and it will help connect abuse victims with local services. if you build it, they will come. however, that may not prove to be the case for one brand-new san francisco school. in fact, district officials are so worried about enrollment, they decided to offer an extra incentive. tara moriarty joins us from the city with the reason that the decision is not sitting well with everyone. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. the principal here at galileo gives the idea the thumbs up. this is one of the high schools that students will automatically be enrolled in if

they attend willie brown middle school for all three years. that's a new state-of-the-art facility. it cost $54 million to build on a city plok block in the bayview neighborhood. they hope once the work is complete on the four-acre lot students will come. but they admit they are worried that some may be scared off by the crime-ridden neighborhood. the school board last night voted to offer parents a perk. come here and your child will automatically be selected to any high school in the city except two. >> i grew up in the bayview, graduated from bayview school. a lot of times the schools in this area get a bad rap. >> reporter: the high schools to the exemtion are lowell and school of the arts -- exception are lowell and school of the arts. some parents don't think this golden ticket is fair in a lottery system that many believe is problematic. we'll try to get reaction from

parents and students about how they feel about this new incentive plan. live in san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. in san jose, some homeless advocates are worrying that closing down a controversial homeless camp may spread the problem elsewhere. in dietz, the city plans to shut down the enrampment on story road known as the jungle. permanent housing has been found for about 88 people who had been living there. 59 others may soon have housing. homeless advocates are telling the mercury news as many as 300 people are living in that camp. many of them have mental problems or drug addiction problems. advocates say if that camp cleses down, the -- closes down, the homeless may scatter to other neighborhoods. ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, authors and fans will all be gathering in benicia for a conference on paranormal activity this weekend. the highlight of the conference called paraconn will be a ghost investigation saturday night at

the old benicia capitol building. it's the first time a paranormal investigation will be allowed inside the building which some people believe is haunted. 7:08. we're following developing news coming in right now. some people in oakland have no electricity because of a power outage. it's happening in the area of high street and virginia avenue. now, originally, pg&e's website said 6600 people were affected by this outage. we just checked. we just got off the phone, we were told only 25 people have no electricity. the repairs should be completed by 9:45 this morning. we're still not sure what caused that power outage. 7:09. people in one peninsula city are pushing for more restaurants. at 7:30, the 30-year-old ban that's standing in their way. also a problem with the new iphone. after the break, a major design flaw that some people say, well, they are bent out of

welcome back to the morning news. 7:1. we have information about the king fire still burning. about 15 minutes ago, calfire announced the wildfire grew from 89,500 acres last night to 93,000 acres this morning. still growing. containment, slightly went up from 35% to 38%.

the calfire is brought in 2,000 extra firefighters to battle this. they are concerned about gusty winds and low humidity and causing flareups. so far, it has destroyed at least a dozen homes east of placerville. >> we are at the mercy of mother nature. we'll do everything we can possible to mitigate mother nature's threat against us by putting in this control lines and containing the fire's edge. >> the dorado county sheriff lifted some evacuation orders yesterday. but 2700 people are out of their homes this morning. 7:13. a modesto woman is partially paralyzed after being bitten by a mosquito with the west nile virus. 34-year-old sara fields says her life turned upside down after she was bitten last june. she says she had dizzy spells, felt what she calls electrical jolts in her body and did not have any use of her left leg. she says after a week in the hospital, she still was not able to get out of bed.

will see some slow traffic out of downtown san jose. i think people are avoiding northbound 85. there was an earlier motorcycle wreck blocking a lane near highway 87 northbound and then 101 is always slow in the area as you drive through. in fact, as a matter of fact, i want to mention that traffic is -- has been slow as you drive to the south bay on 880 south. we can go to the maps now. i can show you that the traffic is going to be slow. i think we have some maps coming up, going to be slow as you drive through. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, and that traffic is backed up for about a 25-minute delay. still have a little -- let's go to the maps now. southbound 880. you can see some slow traffic there, from 238 all the way down to fremont. let's go to steve. i'm here. there you go. very good morning, florida. another balmy humid morning. well, the water temperatures are warm. we're getting a south wind ahead of the system. the combination of the two gives us a mild morning. it will be a mix of sun and clouds. the system has slammed into the north coast. crescent city almost 1.23. that's in about eight hours. that's really good. the rain line is gonna be slow to arrive. it won't until this evening for the north bay and i think by this time tomorrow right here. you can see it up there. this is a slow-moving system. it's tapped into some moisture. it has a lot of dynamics farther north. we'll see lesser amounts. a secondary low. this is kind of cool. a secondary low is forming. that will track more towards us. we'll cool down. it will take 36, 48 hours before it punches in. 66 livermore. 67 hayward, also sfo. it's 64 in san francisco. 64, santa rosa, concord, 66. napa is a cool 61. even calistoga, 62.

mid-60s, sebastopol up to lakeport, healdsburg, petaluma. these are really warm temperatures. normal is about 55 in san francisco. they are sitting at 64. a westerly component yet on part, of the san mateo and santa cruz coast, i've seen a south wind, it's starting to turn southerly in advance of the front that will get here. it was 65 degrees at the bodega buoy. a south wind gives us this mild morning. san francisco buoy, 64. it's not el nino. we haven't had any upwelling. thesystem is still aways away. 63 sacramento. 63 in monterey. 65 ukiah. the system has a lot of rain up to the north. this is the cooler air back in here. you start to see this is more of your showery pattern. this low will tap in and give us cooler air. that's really good. this is through late friday,

welcome back. 7:24. they are heroes. two good samaritans, they jumped into action saving the life of others in a violent crash and now they have been honored by santa clara county. >> let me just ask all of you to give them a big round of applause. [ applause ] >> there they are. the county's board of supervisors honoring 19-year- old carlos ortiz and his 20- year-old cousin robert valencia. last month they were heading home when they stopped at a light at capitol expressway. a black mercedes lost control, rolled over, hit more cars and then burst into flames. >> and i go and i look inside. there's some guy with his belt on. he's on fire. his leg on fire. his arm is on fire. he's screaming and moving. >> the two cousins pulled that man out of the car. they are being praised for being involved in a mentor be program. as for the car crash victim, he's still in the hospital but

he's expected to fully recover. homeless veterans trying to get off the streets of san francisco have a new place to go. a former san francisco supervisor showed off the new facilities at the former stanford hotel. it's now 130 studio apartments. each unit has its own bathroom, refrigerator and microwave oven. he says it's a rare opportunity for a big segment of the city's homeless population. a veteran that is exiting will not have the ability to pay several months in advance for rent. >> he says veterans can get information by going through their veterans affair social workers. renters will pay 30% of their adjusted incomes in the rent. this building, by the way, is due to open in november. 7:26. walmart wants to be your bank. the nation's largest retailer is launching new mobile

checking accounts for its customers called go bank. to help attract customers walmart will not look at credit ratings. it won't have a minimum balance requirement or charge overdraft fees. walmart is working with green bank which is federally insured. go bank will be available by the end of the month. three of the biggest names in u.s. soft drinks are working together. pepsi, coke, and dr. pepper, snapple, want to cut the number of camrys consumed by americans by 20% -- calories consumed by americans by 20%. they will sell smaller portion sizes and increase their promotions for low and no calorie beverages like bottled water. a bold crime in walnut creek. after the break, the reason police say a woman never asked for help after being kidnapped from outside her home in the middle of the day. and classes are canceled today here at san mateo high

it's been cleared. but traffic is still very slow. let's go to 880 northbound in oakland. you can see traffic here is moderately heavy passing the coliseum. no problems on 580 getting to the lakeshore curve. when you get to the toll plaza, there's about a 30, 35-minute delay. it depends on which sign you are in. it's thick getting into san francisco. 7:32. back to the desk. thank you, sal. walnut creek police are asking for help. it's -- it's about a kidnapping that took place in broad daylight. here's information about the suspect and how residents are reacting this morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. still many unanswered questions about the case. it's happened in broad daylight and that makes it more bold. behind me is the bank of america where the victim walked into the bank, spoke to a teller, withdraw money all of this while the suspect stood outside. this all happened according to walnut creek police before noon yesterday. police say a man with a gun first approached the woman who

was standing in front of her home nearby here. 400 block of muller road here in walnut creek. he then demanded that she drive him to the bank of america, off north main to withdraw money. police say she walked into the bank, talked to a teller all while the suspect was simply standing outside. police say the woman did not mention to the teller that she was the victim of a crip. police believe her life may have been threatened. after that, the two drove to the victim's neighborhood where she was left unharm. the suspect took off on foot. some residents are concerned especially since it happened in broad daylight. >> it's very surprising that you would be out at your home in broad daylight and you think when you are at your home, you are most safe. for someone, you know, to come up and hold you at gunpoint is very disturbing. >> we're still looking into whether or not he was alone or had an accomplice. we're looking into whether or not he left in a vehicle or on foot. and we're looking at this point

for any video in the area. >> reporter: now, police say the only description of the suspect was that he was wearing a straw hat, sunglasses and something else blocking his face. police did not disclose exactly what that was. but police also say they don't believe the suspect and victim know each other. but this morning, police will be looking, as we take it back out here live, surveillance footage from residents on lake wood road to help in the investigation. police also say the victim is shaken up but otherwise doing okay. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. police in four plar cities are investigating -- bay area cities are investigating what could be a professional crime ring. it started yesterday with the arrest of two men accused of stealing cars from two san mateo car dealerships. besides san mateo, cars have been stolen from high-end car dealerships in belmont, san jose and santa clara.

179-year-old marquise banks and 18-year-old halsey both of oakland are facing charges now of theft and conspiracy. now, police say this surveillance video you are looking at from tracks auto helped them break the case. the thieves can be seen breaking into the car lot and stealing car keys back in late august. the next night they came back and stole three bmws. the general manager of tracks said the car thefts have really hurt his business. >> e. >> pretty much destroyed the way we do business here, you know, it's probably gonna take a few more months for us to recuperate. >> police say six cars stolen from audubon motors and two lots in san mateo were recovered in oakland near where the suspects were arrested. police are expecting to make more arrests. well, concerns about a gas leak at san mateo high school have made school district

leaders cancel classes there today. ktvu's alex savidge is out there now to tell us what led to this closure. what's going on? >> reporter: good morning. parents did get an alert last night getting them know about this sudden closure. in addition to that, you can see that signs have gone up here on the doors of the campus here letting everybody know that school is closed today as they investigate the potential gas leak here. now, what happened is in two separate cases yesterday, people noticed the odor of national gas here on the campus of san mateo high school and in one case it was dedeathed inside the school's performing art center that you are looking at now. that was at around 11:00 yesterday morning. pg&e came in at that point and they gave the all-clear but then just hours later, staff members in a different part of the school smelled gas. pg&e was once again called into investigate and that's when they found some sort of equipment issue in that area. so the utility decided to shut off a good-sized gas line that runs through campus and show that's why the school's principal late yesterday

decided to cancel classes today sending out an automated phone call to parents. >> because of no gas, there wouldn't be any heat, hot water, hot food to be able to serve 1500 students and over 100 staff members that we decided to close school today so that maintenance could come in and expedite any necessary repairs to get us back online. >> reporter: and pg&e crews will be here on campus throughout the day today to help isolate this equipment issue and help with repairs as well. the principal is hoping that students will be back in class tomorrow but she told me with a possible gas leak here on campus, she doesn't want to take chances. it appears most students got the word from the automated phone call that classes were canceled today but a few have shown up. they were a bit surprised frankly that there was no school today. we're live in san mateo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you.

7:38. workers for the golden gate bridge district could be on strike within the next few days. the district tells ktvu that bus and ferry workers may walk off the job at the end of the week. that strike would disrupt service for tens of thousands of commuters. this is video from last week when a small group of machinists staged a one-day walkout. 13 bridge district unions have been without a contract since july. negotiations appear to have hit a dead end. the future of san francisco's transbay transit center appears to be in jeopardy. the chronicle reports the recent agreement between city leaders and downtown developers involving taxes to fund the huge project collapsed this week. that could mean problems for the plan to expend caltrain to downtown san francisco. the same project calls for the construction of the largest skyscraper on the entire west coast. some business owners in

burlingame are calling on the city to lift the moratorium on new restaurants along broad bey. the current ban limits the number of restaurants on broadway to just 28. that ban was approved 30 years ago to maintain a balance between restaurants and retail stores. but many broadway merchants say the moratorium is hurting business and making people look for other places to dine out. the city council will review complaints during a meeting next month. there's word of problems for the new iphone. some people say the new iphone 6 plus have bending in their pockets. one blogger claims he is able to bend his new phone after just using a little pressure with his hands. now, this complaint is that the thinner and larger aluminum body of the phone just can't stand up to the wear and tear of staying in a pocket. so far, there's no comment from apple. all right. 7:40. well, shots fired on a bay area freeway. coming up at 8:00, what the victims say happened after they

news. 7:43. danger at the dog park. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom now telling us about an incident that has pet owners worried and scientists are looking for some answers. >> scientists at uc davis will spend the next week running tests on eight suspicious meatballs found at a popular dog park. joe and his dog were at the park in santa rosa called a place to play saturday morning when he saw the meatballs. he says they were raw meat with little green specks and he was suspicious because it's not something you see at a dog park. >> i was very upset. i was concerned. he found one and was nosing around. i was concerned. i didn't want him or anyone else's dog to be injured. >> he stayed at the park for an hour to warn other dog officers. animal control officers are concerned about poison. so the meatballs have been turned over to scientists at uc davis. this incident similar to one in san francisco when poisoned meatballs were found in the

board to a hospital as was previously scheduled. the santa clara city council approved a resolution reaffirming the city's commitment to opposing domestic violence. the resolution was proposed by the nonprofit group next door. that group has called for 49ers players ray mcdonald to be benched while police investigate the domestic violence allegations against him. the resolution, however, does not mention mcdonald by name but calls for the city, the 49ers and the nfl to do all they can to eradicate domestic violence and protect victims of abuse. the cal state university system is taking steps to help victims of sexual assault. csu will hire independent victims' advocates at all 23 campuses. the advocates will work with students who have been sexually assaulted and provide them with confidential information about their rights and options under the law. a campus spokesperson says six schools already have advocates and the rest will be in place

by june. all right, tori. well, pg&e is proposing a new rate structure that critics are saying favors the big energy users. pg&e is proposing that every user pay just to access the power grid. now, the access fee would be an extra $5 to $10 a month. pg&e says that would help lower the rates of people who use more energy because they are at home all day like a senior citizen or a stay-at-home mom. but many people at a puc hearing in san francisco yesterday, they were skeptical. >> we hope to bring down our highest rate today so hard- working families won't face high bills. >> what pg&e is trying to do here is to reslice the pie so that large energy users, possibly energy hogs pay less and customers who use less energy would pay more. >> well, pg&e is hoping to have the new rate system in place by

us. but not before 80s and a lot of 70s around the bay and even along the coast. here's sal. we have a lot of problems in the east bay. first of all, 580 westbound at 980, that crash i told you about has been cleared but the damage is done. it's really terrible. we can go to the maps there. the crash has gone. i will get rid of the icon. you can see traffic is backed up into san leandro on 580. it's much worse than it normally is. as we move over to the rest of the east bay. we have slow traffic approaching danville on 680, highway 680 southbound is slow and you can see some more slow traffic on 880 south near stevenson boulevard. there was a bicyclist hit by a pedestrian and that area is to be avoided. it's not on the freeway but it could affect you if you are exiting at stevenson boulevard. let's go to some live pictures here. i want to show you the bay bridge. about a 25, 30-minute drive from this point to san francisco. when you get to san francisco, northbound 101 looks okay coming up to the 80 split. 8:02. let's go back to the desk.

thank you, sal. a south bay family ripped apart this morning by a double homicide. the shootings happened inside a home on rancho drive in south san jose. two people were killed. a third person wounded. neighbors and police have been talking throughout the morning to our reporter, janine de la vega. she joins us live now with what she's learned about the victims and the shooters. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we're here at police headquarters, where homicide detectives have been trying to identify the suspects in this double homicide. police sources tell me they believe there are two suspects and they also tell me that it appears that this deadly shooting does not appear to be random. now, this all took place at 9:00 last night. police were called after a woman inside a home on rancho drive off monterey highway called 911 to say there had been a shooting. when officers arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. they were pronounced dead at the scene. a bomb woman had been injured -- a woman had been injured. she was taken to the hospital

to be treated and was interviewed by police. we're told the victims are a father and son and the woman injured is the son's girlfriend. one neighbor told us that crame and gang activity is common in the neighborhood. >> another homicide by the house where i live, you know. i've been living here for 13 years already in the same area. it's just the same. hasn't changed. >> reporter: detective are looking at all of the evidence gathered overnight and are working on a motive. police have not revealed whether or not there was forced entry into the home. as i mentioned, i'm being told this doesn't appear to be random. i've learned that the police have been called to the house in the past. it's unclear what those calls were about. but authorities do tell me the son who was shot and killed was 29 years old and the father was 49 years old. this is the city's 27th and 28th homicide of the year. and to put it all in perspective, last year at this time, we were up to 39 homicides. so we're still below a what we

were -- below what we were compared to last year. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, janine. police are investigating a deadly early-morning accident involving a man hit by a car while crossing the street. this happened about 12:30 this morning at tully road and lanai in east san jose. police say that man was not in the crosswalk when the car hit and killed him. the driver did stop and is cooperating with the investigation. police at this point don't think that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident. oakland police are busy searching for two men who fired shots at another car. the victims say they were driving in east oakland yesterday when two masked men in another car started shooting at them. the driver says the sk maaed men followed -- masked men followed them onto northbound 880. one of the bullets fired went through the windshield. another one shredded a rear tire. the car went off the road at 66th avenue. the shooters kept driving.

8:05. homeless advocates worry that closing down a notorious homeless encampment in san jose could actually create a new type of problem. in december, the family -- in december, the city plans to shut down the encampment on story road. it's nicknamed the jungle. the city has found permanent housing for 88 people who had been living there. 59 others could soon receive housing as well. but homeless advocates tell the mercury news there could be up to 300 people living in the camp. many of them suffer from mental illness or addiction. advocates say if the camp closes, the homeless may just scatter to other neighborhoods. contra costa county is just one of four counties in the nation to receive a $2.6 million federal grant for domestic violence programs. an anti-violence organization will partner with the county and police agencies to launch the new program. it will allow police to conduct immediate assessments meant to gauge how likely it is that an offender will commit murder and

step in before violence escalates. it will also help connect abuse victims with local services. 8:06. well, it's san francisco's first new school in years. but so far, that's not enough to attract enough students to fill up the classrooms. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now to tell us about a plan to entice students to enroll, one that's creative but also controversial as well. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. the principal here at galileo academy has no qualms about this plan. this is one of the public high schools that students will automatically be enrolled in if they choose to go to willie brown junior middle school for all three years. that school is brand new. $54million to build on a city block. district officials hope that once the work is complete on the four-acre lot, the students will come. but they admit they are worried some may be scared off by the

that's because of project called raise 80. they will increase the height of several bridges over the freeway. the first will be the overpass in placer county. this one was built in the 1950s. it does not meet the federal standards to let trucks and emergency vehicles drive safely under the bridge. >> a lot of the command centers, such as fema and office of emergency services, can't get under construction. they have to detour around which slows response time which you do not want in an emergency. >> to do the work, caltrans is shutting down part of the freeway, there's a detour that takes drivers off haynes road and puts them back on the freeway at state route 20 in nevada county. that's a 56-mile detour. the freeway will be closed tuesdays through thursdays from 10:30 at night until 5:00 a.m. the project will take several weeks to complete.

you are the most unusual fishing partner i'veerer had. >> i'll say. >> a bald eagle rescued by the water from that fisherman is recovering at a wildlife center. the fisherman saw it struggling to swim near british columbia. he scooped it up, let it rest on the boat and turned it over to volunteers. the experts say that bald eagle most likely tried to catch a fish that was too big and his wings became waterlogged. when he recovers, he will be taken back and returned to the wild. in yosemite, park rangers are turning to new technology to track bears. up until now, they tagged bears with tracking devices using radio technology. now they are switching over to new gps technology. that has a wider range. look at that face.

the gps collars are designed to keep visitors safe. but list give park visiters a better idea of the bears. former san francisco supervisor beven dusty showed off new facilities at the former stanford hotel. it's now 10 studio apartments and -- 130 studio apartments. there's a bathroom, refrimg rater and micro-- refrigerator and microwave in each unit. >> a veteran is exiting homelessness, they will not compete favorably with a young tech worker with a 720 credit score and the ability to pay several months in advance for rent. >> he says veterans can get information by going through their social worker or the group swords to plow shares. renters pay 30% of their adjusted incomes in rent. the building is expected to open in november.

8:26. there is a new development in the robberies of several high- end car dealerships in four bay area cities. the arrest police have made and also the theory about how this may be part of a much bigger crime ring. and concerns about a possible gas leak here at san mateo high school that prompted the district to cancel classes today. we'll tell you about the discovery made here on campus yesterday and the repair work happening today. right now we're looking at a commute where traffic is still busy. but it finally is improving. here on the golden gate bridge, the commute looks great. we'll tell you more about the bridges crossing the bay straight ahead. timothy says we have a soft rain up here in cass da zer row. i know there's reports of light rain in windsor and kind of misty in san ramon. it's on its way but the main front won't arrive until tonight. we'll show it to you coming up.

threatening. the bicyclist sustained a concussion. stevenson boulevard, near 880 and fremont police tell us that that bike rider was not wearing his helmet. they should be clearing the scene in a little bit. but the traffic in the area is still very slow. this is just a normal morning commute. the traffic on stevenson doesn't really affect the nimitz freeway which is slow as you know. 580 is still very slow from the altamont pass into the main part of livermore. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, we still have that steady 25 to 30-minute delay, it's not improved. it's moving along, though, and metering lights are on. 237 westbound crossing the valley, some stop-and-go traffic and just as steve mentioned, a little bit of mist and drizzle might slow you down. 8:32. back to the desk. some concerns about a gas leak at san mateo high school have made school district leaders there cancel classes there today. ktvu's alex savidge has been out there and you are back now to tell us what led up to all

of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the principal here told me she is being especially cautious with concerns about a possible gas leak here on campus. that's why classes were cancel. the alert went out to parents by phone. there are signs posted on the doors at san mateo high school. also one student we talked to a short time ago told me he found out about the sudden closure on twitter last night. he says he doesn't have too many friends who are complaining. >> it was surprising that something like that happened. like at the last minute. >> reporter: the potential gas leak first came to light yesterday in two separate classes. people noticed the oater of natural -- odor of natural gas on campus. it one case, it was detected inside the school's performing arts center. that was at around 11:00 in the morning. pg&e came in and gave the all clear. a couple of hours later, staff members smelled gas in another

part of the school. pg&e was called in to investigate. that's when they found some sort of equipment issue in that area. the utility decided to shut off a good sized gas line that runs across campus and so the principal decided that with no gas service, it was a good idea to keep the kids at home today. >> the safety, the -- you know, the health of our students are paramount. we want to make sure they are safe and that we can get what needs to be done and welcome them back to campus. >> reporter: it appears as though most students got the word that school was closed. we did get a handful of kids who showed up this morning expecting to go to class. we did see one young man who was dropped off by his mom, ran over to the school. after we told him classes were canceled, we saw him running back over to his car to go back home. so a few people didn't get the message. pg&e crews will be here on campus later today to help isolate the equipment issue and

figure out exactly what's wrong. and then the school district will be working on repairs and the principal is hoping that classes will be in session tomorrow. we're lav this morning in -- we're lav this morning in -- we're lav in san -- we're live in san mateo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. brian flores is live in walnut creek with information about a suspect and how residents are reacting this morning to this man with a gun. >> reporter: good morning. still many unanswered questions about this case and a person just drove by. said he saw a suspicious person around the time that it happened and the fact that it happened in broad daylight makes it more bold. we're in the walnut creek neighborhood. the 400 block of muller road where it all started. walnut creek police say it started before noon yesterday. police say a man with a gun first approached a woman who was standing right in front of her home, again, off muller road. he then demanded she drive him to the bank of america off north main to withdraw money.

police say she walked into the bank, talked to a teller while the suspect was standing outside. police say the woman did not mention to the teller that she was the victim of a crime. it remains unclear why. but after that, investigators say the two drove back here where she was left unharmed and the suspect then took off on foot. this morning walnut creek police say some people knew something was awry. >> we did get several calls from people reporting a suspicious male. at that point, the gentleman had a disguise on. that's why we don't have a real good description of him at this point. he was wearing a hat and sunglasses and something else that obscured his face. >> it's very surprising that you would be out at your home in broad daylight and you think when you are at your home, you are most safe and for someone to come up and hold you at gunpoint is very disturbing. >> i've been in e-mail contact with the walnut creek police department this morning. they can't provide many new

details other than the suspect is white, medium height. they don't believe the suspect and victim knew each other. but this morning police will be looking at surveillance camera footage from the bank and are asking residents off muller and lakewood road to provide camera footage. for the victim, she's expected to be okay. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:37. police in four bay area cities investigating what they say could be a professional crime ring. it started with the arrest yesterday of two men accused of stealing cars from two san mateo county car dealerships. now, besides san mateo, cars have also been stolen from high- end dealerships in belmont, san jose and santa clara. 19-year-old mar keez banks and 18-year-old halsey both of oakland are now facing charges of theft and conspiracy. police say this surveillance video you are looking at from tracks auto in san mateo helped them break the case.

the thieves can be seen breaking into the car lot and stealing keys. this was back in late august. the next night, they came back and stole three bmws. the general manager of tracks who did not want to be identified said those thefts have hurt his business. >> it's pretty much destroyed the way we do business here, you know, it's probably gonna take a few more months for us to recuperate. >> now, police say six cars stolen from audubon motors and two from san mateo were recovered in oakland near where the suspects were arrested. police expect to make more arrests. a uc davis graduate is stranded in the southeastern asian country after being released from jail from a drug crime she says she never committed. 40-year-old stacy addison is a veterinarian who goes all over the world helping animals. in an interview via skype, she

says she was renewing her visa when the driver she hired to take her to the government office picked up another fare which is common there, but the new passenger then stopped to collect a package which turned out to to condane methamphetamine. she was -- contain methamphetamine. >> the police searched me, tested my urine, everything was negative. i thought, okay, i haven't done anything. it shue be okay -- it should be okay. but it's not. >> friends have created a facebook page drawing attention to her arrest. addison was freed avfive days in jail but police are holding her passport until their investigation is over. that may take a year. 8:39. the department of homeland security is warning police departments around the country to be on the lookout for supporters of islamic state terrorists here in the u.s. who may try to retaliate for the airstrikes in syria. a bullty on was issued --

poison. >> too scary. people want their animals -- it's supposed to be a place to play. >> if you don't agree with parks, go a different route in voicing your opinion instead of trying to hurt someone's animal. >> that's brian wilson with animal control. they sent more people out. they found more suspicious meatballs on a nearby trail. the meatballs now at uc daviss were scientists will spend the next week running tests to see if they are poisoned. this incident reminds a lot of people of one in san francisco when poisoned meatballs were found in the twin peaks neighborhood. one dog died after eating one of those meatballs. the scientists at uc davis say the tests will take about a week to get the results. want to check in with sal and see what's happening on the roads and any serious situations you are keeping an eye on? >> nothing serious unless you don't like slow traffic because we're looking at the delay time here on the eastshore freeway and it's up to 49 minutes.

we don't have any major accidents to blame for this. but we just have a lot of slow traffic here. today, people have been texting me, why is it slow? and other people say californians cannot drive in any sort of wet weather. right? is that what we're saying. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up to the macarthur maze. a little bit of wet weather slows everyone down and that makes the commutes be a little longer. looking at contra costa county, we had a couple of late accidents on highway 4 westbound coming up over the willow pass grade. 680 is still a little bit slow coming from concord and danville and the other way around. and bart commune and muni are parting -- b.a.r.t. and communeny are reporting their trains on time. here's steve. there's a drizzly rainy

pattern for guerneville. maybe where you are, too. this is just drizzle. the rain is up here. the front is here. the front is over there. but underneath that you can still get some rain as this system inches closer. but tonight, it may take until tomorrow like at 9:00, 10:00 before all of this makes it to san jose. the low will have to swing in. this is where the cooler air is. this is where you will feel it. there it is. there's the first one of the season. the front has some cool air. the leading edge of that is beginning to move in. the colder air will get modified. 60s on the temperature to 68 at sfo and the normal high this time of year, 73. they are close. novato, 66. half moon bay, 66. the breeze is turning southerly. you would expect that. 62 to 67 saratoga, east san jose already 70. fremont 62. sunnyvale says 67. i'm not surprised by any of these. southeast now oakland. southerly at santa rosa.

it's turning south at concord. half moon bay is south. 64 to 65-degree water temperatures is why it's so warm this morning and why it feel sose tropical. 66 ukiah. 64 for monterey and heavy-duty rain up on the north coast. crescent city has had over inches of rain. this is the cooler air. this will bork its way in. it's about a day away. some of the rainfall projections are impressive for the north coast. two to four inches. ukiah almost an inch of rain. and then it tails off. russian river will have over .5. after that it fades away. we'll get rain down to san jose. the timing is later, not sooner. some of this will be drizzle. but the front doesn't arrive until tonight. there's santa rosa after the midnight hour and into marin county and finally overnight to tomorrow morning, it will sweep through by 7:00, 9:00. that's when it might make it to san jose. by the time it gets down there,

welcome back. 8:53. workers for the golden gate bridge district may be on strike within the next couple of days. bus and ferry workers may walk off the job at the end of this week in the continuing dispute with management. that would disrupt service for thousands of commuters. you are looking at video here from last week. a small group of machinists staged a one-day walkout. 13 bridge unions have not had a contract since july and negotiations right now are not going well. the future of san francisco's transbay tran sipt center looks to be in jeopardy. the chronicle reports a reagreement between city leaders and downtown developers involving taxes to pay for the huge project collapsed this week.
