the man to drop his weapons and when that didn't happen they opened fire killing the man. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and here is a new view of the crash. a viewer sent us this picture looking down on the crash scene. all of this happened right in the middle of the financial district. >> that white suv at the center of the chase was taken at gun point from a woman in richmond. we talked to as you are about to see, she was still shaken. >> that white suv belongs to her, she was on her way to work this morning when she was carjacked. >> i thought he was going to shoot me. he was ready to go inside the truck. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: she is still upset. he says she was about to leave when armed men confronted her. >> i saw him open the door. all i could do was scream.

no, no. i called out for help. he told me i was going to drive away and i -- i didn't know if i should drive away, get out, jump, run. at the moment all i could think was my kids inside the house so i don't know where i got the courage but i started screaming and i jumped out of my truck and i was banking on my -- banging on my house door. >> reporter: she ran inside. the armed man took off with her suv. >> she recalls what happened unbelieval and scary. she -- unbelievable and scary. . rain moved through the bay area this morning. starting in the north bay last night and then intensifying during the morning and the rain caused serious accident that led to major delays for people trying to get to work. i want to bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin for a look at how much rain we got.

>> the rain came down on the heart of the morning commute. the heaviest rain in san francisco. but rainfall accumulation half inch in some locations. here is the rainfall. last week we had rain on the 18 18th. rain this morning. here is what the radar looked like. look at the heavy rain showing up 7:00 a.m. here is the rain totals through the morning commute. that is when the rain was falling. it was slowing things down. half inch in san francisco. that was the money spot. half inch in oakland. san jose, you got 4/10 of rain. rain in the king fire area. a flood warning up there, which is great use, you have enough rain to trigger that. good news for firefighters as we be been talking about. it was needed. did this help the drought? no. need more than this.

we will talk about the bay area weekend when i come back. >> the rain led to a horrible commute this morning on bay area roads. the chp had to shut down lanes on 580 in oakland following aislings involving 5 -- a collision involving 5 vehicles and a crash involving a big rig led to traffic problems on southbound 880. there was a large amount of standing watt on the freeway and a truck slashed water on to his windshield and he couldn't see and then crashed and that lead to a major traffic problem for the morning. ferry captains will be on strike tomorrow and some ferries will not be running. ktvu's rob roth is live with what the union is hoping to gain. >> the one day strike is set to begin at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow morning and last all

day. there will be no ferries running. >> reporter: golden gate bridge bridge district ferries are not running tomorrow. they were informing passengers they were going on a strike tomorrow. the 8,000 commuters riding will have to find another way to crash the bay. >> i guess i am driving in tomorrow. which is a drag. it is expensive to drive in. otherwise i have no way. >> reporter: ferry captains for the golden gate bridge bridge district will stage their strike at 4:30 a.m. friday morning till 9:00 p.m. at night. there will be no ferry service. >> going on strike is the last thing we want it do. >> reporter: the dispute is over money and healthcare. they filed an unfair labor practice. >> i have a family to feed. i have two children at home and

the man was in all of the videos speaking with a british accent. he wore a mask, dressed in all black and holding a knife. the fbi is not releasing his name. u.s. and french officials say there is no evidence to back up a claim of an attack on subway systems in the u.s. they uncovered the plot. he says the suspects include american and french extremists fighting for isis in iraq. security officials say they have not seen any information confirming the plan. 2 bodies discovered in an apartment full of toxic gas. the procautions neighbors have to take oprotect themselves -- precautions neighbors have to take to protect themselves.

. following developing news in san jose. news chopper 2 is over head 40 minutes ago and brought us these pictures as three people were taken into custody. police say about 1:30 p.m. they got a report of suspicious people. when officers responded to the scene the suspects ran away. police set up a perimeter and conducted a yard to yard search where they made three arrests. the same neighborhood saw 11 burglaries earlier this month.

a man suspected of killing a prostitute in florida 20 years ago has been arrested in san francisco. authorities say they believe 47- year-old antonio calvillo killed 27-year-old shirley laseter of florida in 1995. they say after the killing he fled to mexico. but this month detectives tracked him down and found him in san francisco. he is now extradited back to florida to face second degree murder charges. prosecutors in contra costa county said no charges will be filed against two men in connection with a deadly stabbing last weekend. investigators say the 23-year- old was stabbed after he and a group of friends got into an argument with another group on sunday. police later arrested an 18- year-old and a 25-year-old in connection with the killing. the district attorney says both men have been released and are not charged due to a lack of

evidence. the coast guard has a warning for people who want to head to the beach. rip currents are go tag be very -- going to be very dangerous. a man drowned and his man is in critical condition after being swept away yesterday. ktvu's katy eustis is live at ocean beach where we have seen these tragedies happen again. >> reporter: that is true, frank. they called the incident similar to a drowning that happened in april where a father and son were swimming at ocean beach, they were swept out from the rip tied and the boy's body was never recovered. >> reporter: ocean beach is picturesque but it proves to be deadly. we watched firefighters try to save a father and son yesterday. this afternoon is different. >> seems more quiet. there is not a lot of people out here at all.

deaths scared a lot of people. >> reporter: firefighters say a man swam with his son while another son walked along the beach. >> they swim in ocean beach and yesterday was aggressive. >> reporter: they wore wet suit but became distressed. a surfer brought in the son. 10 minutes later rescuers arrived. >> they spotted the father and they retrieved him. >> they could not resuscitate the man and he died. the son is in critical condition. in april a similar scenario. a teenager swimming with his father. >> there is warning signs all up up and down the beach. people died here. people still go in. firefighters respond to 50 rescue as year at ocean beach alone. after every call the message remains the same. >> there are no life guards on ocean beach. they don't want people going in

the water. >> reporter: firefighters say surfing is different because it is a flotation device which makes it safer than swimming. if you are caught in a rip current swim parallel to the beach till you can get into shore. don't fight the current. it makes people tired and they succumb to hypothermia. katy eustis, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco firefighters helping to fight the king fire in el dorado county for the last week now are coming home tonight as crews gain the upper hand on the fire. the rainfall helped firefighters make progress on containment lines. 95,000 acres burned near pollack pines. at this point the fire is 43% contained. aside from firefighters having to be extra careful the rain is a welcome sight. >> rain is great news in terms of increasing humidity and

lowering temperatures allowing firefighters to make some additional head way on the fire. >> the number of homes destroyed stands at 12. another 12,000 homes are threatened. evacuation orders are still in effect for 2700 residents. the rain is what they needed. let's bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. >> some areas in the fire zone, half inch, an inch of rain, maybe more. to say the rain kind of helped them is an understatement. the fire was out of control. and now it is in control. you need rain. great news for the firefighters. the fing fire. northern california got rain too. those fires at happy camp -- king fire m northern california, got rain too. those fires at happy camp got help too. here is what we ended up with in san francisco. the record in san francisco for this date is 3/4 of an inch.

man suspected of abducting a missing university of virginia student made a court appearance today. jesse matthews appeared from a jail in texas where he was arrested yesterday. he has been charged with abduction -- abduction with intent to defile. hannah elizabeth graham disappeared in virginia september 13. police believe jesse matthews was the last person seen with hannah elizabeth graham. the third american aid worker who contracted ebola in africa has been released from a hospital in nebraska. the doctor was admitted with the ebola virus three weeks ago after he was infected. another american aid worker are still being treated in atlanta. he thanked god for getting him through his illness and says he is grateful for the fast action to get him the help he needed. >> literally thousands of people here and around the

5:00 p.m. >> a heart breaking discovery inside this apartment building. two bodies and toxic gas that has neighbors on alert. neighbors were evacuated over night and now that they have been let back in they have clean up to do. ktvu's ann rubin has more. >> reporter: the chemicals were flammable and toxic and residents here could smell them last night and called police, possibly keeping the situation from being even worse. >> reporter: hours after two bodies were found here, unit 17 has been boarded up and police say the toxic gas has cleared. >> they would not let folks go back in there. >> reporter: tests show a highly flammable and dangerous gas. >> it was very foul smelling. >> reporter: police aren't saying the chemicals caused the

death but the fumes over power four officers who had to be treated and residents were forced to evacuate. >> they could have exploded or caudcaught on fire -- caught on fire. >> the fire department allowed residents to return home around 8:00 a.m. this morning. and the home association warned residents to clean their units and throw away exposed food. >> anything that is open, throw that away. >> reporter: what happened here? police will only say they are investigating the deaths. neighbors report seeing white scrap paper shoved in the door jam. there was a note found at the scene but there was no suicide note. >> there was no suicide note. >> reporter: neighbors are grieving for the family but thankful the situation wasn't worse. >> if somebody did it on purpose, my god, you know, think what would have happened

popular program that helps residents protect their homes from wildfires is being

extended. helping people in the hills area to clear brush surrounding their homes. it is funded by pg&e. they are giving $5.5 million to fund fire protection services. today crews used a chipper to break down large branches and vegetation that could catch fire. >> we are in the third year of a drought. some of this work is more important than ever. especially in a residential area like this. steep slopes and brush and debris could lead it a real risk. >> people wanting to take part need to call their fire protection counsel. california rice farmers expecting a good harvest despite the drought but they are concerned about what happens after the harvest. they planted 75% of their fields this year due to water limitations but the fields are looking good. what they are worried about is whether they will have enough water to prepare the fields for

next season and also help migratory birds. >> what happens to half of the fields is a shallow amount of water is added that decomposes the straw, and helps the farming process and it is critical because it provides habit for millions of birds. >> the rice fields provide 60% of the food for ducks and geese during the winter in the valley. woman is telling a story of survival after she was attacked by a 300-pound black bear. a warning, the pictures could be considered graphic. the 65-year-old says she was walking her dogs in a grove when a bear came after her and sank its teeth into her. she -- teeth into her, she was knocked to the ground. >> i was on my back kicking my feet and yelling at the top of my lungs to get him away from

a search going on for a missing boater in san francisco bay. the person was last seen near alcatraz about 6:30 a.m. this morning and ktvu's cristina rendon is live with the latest on the search. >> reporter: well, the coast guard is searching by sea and air for the missing person. at last check there was a helicopter about 5 minutes ago but still no sign of the person but we found the owners of the boat. they indicated the boat had

been taken. the coast guard says they were doing routine checks around 7:45 a.m. this morning when they found a sail boat adrift. a ferry responded saying they had seen a person on the sail boat wearing yellow weather gear. they saw that person around 630 amenders alcatraz. they determined it was -- 6:30 a.m. this morning near alcatraz. they determined it was the same boat. we shot these images of the sail boat after it was taken to the u.s. army corps of engineers. the owners were notified. the coast guard is not confirming whether or not the boat was stolen. they remain searching for the person in the water. again still no sign of that person and there is no word on when they will call the search but they are still searching

flamingo colony has new additions. four while chicks hatched. the young birds are in good health and parents are very attentive. it is the first time in four years there have been new chicks. >> we are always fighting the fog. they do well with cold weather but once the fog rolls in they shut down and stop building their nests. >> the chicks may be around for a long time. they have a long life span. the parents came to the zoo 43 years ago and there are two more chicks set to catch any day now. our weather now, we got rain just as you called, bill. came down this morning. are we done? >> reminding to the flamingos. 43 years. i didn't know that.
