outlines the stepped up security measures that are now in place and raises concerns about what still needs to be done. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> there was the teen stow away who snuck into a wheel well making it to hawaii and then a woman got past security and boarded a flight to los angeles. now major changes are underway mineta international airport. new at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's paul chambers joins us now from the airport with the stepped up security measures that come with obstacles. >> reporter: the process of keeping this place safe. right now they are testing technology here but the problem is when they are done, they are not sure how they will pay for it. >> reporter: it is business as usual for travelers at san mineta international airport which is how officials want you to see it. but after two security problems the airport adopted new safety

features. >> increasing patrols of the air field. you heard today that we did a full scrutiny of our fencing to determine if there are potential weaknesses there. >> they started testing cameras around the perimeter. aegean-year-old made his way on to the -- a 15-year-old made his way on to the wheel well of a plane and flew to hawaii. >> it is up to tsa to tell us what we can or cannot share with the public. >> we got our records back with redacted information and the only thing that was not redacted that we can present was the two events that have happened. >> the other incident happened last month when she made her way through security check points without a ticket and boarded a los angeles bound southwest airport.

they are doing all they can to prevent incidents like this in the future. >> funding is key. we are always looking looking to see what else we can do to enhance our security but with additional technology means we need to increase our budget. >> reporter: officials reviewed background checks and finger printing and enhanced their communications. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. as promised rain showers swept through the bay area over night. here is a look at the down pour this morning. you can see how heavy the rain was coming down. heavy enough to cover parking lots. and the rain caused major problems for the morning commute. this crash created a nightmare for drivers on interstate 880. the big rig driver was in the slow lane when the truck in front of him drove through

standing water and he couldn't see and that caused him to crash. our chief meteorologist bill martin is here now with which spots got the most rain. >> the rain picked up. that is the story. 7:00 a.m. this morning. here is what the radar looked like. dumping. dumping in oakland. raining hard on the peninsula. raining hard in san jose, fremont. the rain coming down and making a mess of the morning commute. the rainfall accumulations. the rain moved through santa rosa. look how quickly it went through but not before depositing significant rainfall. especially in san francisco. half inch of rain right there. fremont, half inch as well. a nice rib storm. the big story is the king -- rain storm. the big story is the king fire, pollock pines area, they got an inch of rain, even more and that helped them. great news on the fire front. on the rain fronts.

unless you were driving this morning and the bay area weekend in a few minutes. emergency crews say the death of a swimmer at ocean beach is a reminder of how dangerous the surf can be. a father and son were body surfing when they were swept out. the father died and tonight his son is in critical condition. firefighters say they responded between 30-50 rescues at ocean beach every year. >> people died here. people still go in. >> one firefighter says yesterday's drowning is similar to a case in april. a teenager and his father were swept away while swimming. this morning's raise caused power outages across the south and east bay. pg&e says down lined cut power to 6,000 customers in san jose. 250 are still without power and

in the east bay, 5800 customers lost power. most of the power there has been restored. pg&e says it had extra crews on stand by. a police chase that started across the bay ended in downtown san francisco in a hail of gunfire. it started before 5:00 a.m. this morning with a carjacking. the suspect then drove the stolen suv across the an rafael bridge and then the golden gate bridge. police caught up with the suspect in the financial district where the suv crashed and the officers ended up opening fire. ktvu's mike mibach is live with more on the chase and the woman who was carjacked. mike? >> reporter: gun pointed to the head. she says that she thought she was going to die. but one hour later the carjacker's life came to an end. >> reporter: california and battery downtown san francisco. >> unbelievable. web of a crime scene. stuck in the middle. >> i thought he was going to shoot me. >> reporter: this woman says she was in her white suv outside her home when a man opened the door, pointed a gun at her, and she jumped out. >> at that moment all i could think was my kids inside the house. so i don't know where i got the courage but i started screaming and -- i started screaming and jumped out and i was banging on my door. >> reporter: the carjacker sped off, was pursued by police officers across the golden gate bridge. minutes later the suspect crashed into a couple vehicles. >> when good samaritan went to

the aid he fired on the good samaritans. suspect would not drop the gun. turned the gun towards the officers. >> gun shots going off. >> bang, bang, bang, bang. >> he told the story to those who made their way to the scene. of suspicious activity at a home near ruby avenue after 1:30 p.m. today. when officers responded the suspects ran off. police set up a perimeter and conducted a yard to yard search. three people were arrested. they saw 11 burglaries in one day earlier this month. police are working to determine if the cases are related. after serving six years attorney general eric holder announced he is stepping down. >> eric holder made the announcement saying he come to this moment with mixed emotions. the president said he will remain till his successor is confirmed. eric holder is the first black attorney general in u.s. history and the 4th longest serving attorney general. california's attorney general praised eric holder for his services. kamala harris said it has been an honor to work with eric holder and noted his

achievements inments -- she is eric holder brought great honor to america as our nation's top law enforcement officer. his leadership and integrity made america a safer and better and just nation. ferry captains are going on strike for one day. they are hoping it is enough to jump start stalled contract talks. ktvu's rob roth is live with what this strike will mean for commuters. rob? >> reporter: the one day strike will shut down ferry service all day tomorrow. and that will leave 8,000 passengers scrambling to find another way to get across the bay. >> reporter: this 16-year-old girl relies on the ferry to get to her ballet class. >> taking a taxi. >> reporter: sounds expensive.

>> probably. yeah. >> reporter: with labor disputes they announced a one day strike beginning at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. it means no ferries. the dispute is over wages and health benefit costs. >> i am sure there are some people who will filed it inconvenient and i -- that is the last thing we want to do. >> reporter: he has been a captain with the district for eight years. >> countless hours of training, retraining every year. more and more coast guard regulations. more raining is required. more certifications are required. every year the job gets more difficult. >> reporter: they can only afford to pay them so much and offered 3% a year for the next three years. they are asking for 3.75% a year. they earn $83,000 annually. >> most well paid on the san

the apple store in berkeley became crime scene this afternoon. ktvu's alex savage snapped this picture after two men ripped off two iphone 6 iphone 6 plus. they ran to an awaiting car. police responded to the incident but so far we are not aware of arrests. workers say this same store was hit the other night. police are investigating the kovry of two -- discovery of two bodies inside an apartment complex that was evacuated because of a dangerous gas. it happened on california street. residents were allowed back in this morning and tests show

high levels of a flammable gas. police are not saying they caused the deaths of the two people but the fumes over powered four officer whose were treated. residents are now being advised to clean their units and throw away exposed food. new at 6:00 p.m. a new effort to tackle a problem. people who live at the hillside apartments nicknamed it the kill side apartments. now the city is suing the building owners to force them to clean things up. ktvu's john sasaki takes us inside to show us what the conditions are like. >> reporter: from a distance the while side apartments appear main -- hillside apartments appear maintained but take a look. >> they need otear the build -- to tear the building down. >> window that was broke last

[ indiscernible ] >> reporter: what these pictures show is worse. her sons both suffered bites from bugs which residents say infest the buildings. >> they fighting because somebody is picking on them. they are in class and they got a flee bite. >> reporter: what has residents fearful is the gang members and drug dealers. this video that was shot at the complex shows several people holding guns. >> there are activities on the premises involving a gang. a violent gang. there is shootings and intimidations. >> reporter: someone was shot to death outside the complex last weekend. >> just bad. the violence. the maintenance. just everything over here is horrible. i don't know why they have it still up. >> reporter: an official with the management company told me

they have not been served with lawsuit. she added they don't do nothing about problems at their properties. officials are in talks with the owners who say they seem to be motivated. they are hoping for positive changes by the end of the year. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. we are learning about a joint investigation of uber, lift and side car launched by the district attorneys in san francisco and los angeles. prosecutors say some operators are violating state and local laws regarding carpooling and airport pick ups and some companies are making misleading claims about drivers background checks. the prosecutors want the companies to respond by monday and say they could seek penalties. >> we have completed an investigation. we are comfortable that there is evidence to bring this case to court if we have to. >> side car ceo says the

company's carpooling program is not illegal and they will continue to operate. also uber told ktvu the company has not received a later from prosecutors. in the last 15 minutes we have learned that some evacuations are being lifted near where the massive king wildfire is burning in -- evacuations have been changed to voluntary. wet weather is helping firefighters gain control of the fire. more than 95,000 acres burned near pollock pines. and right now the fire is 43% contained. firefighters say the rain is a welcome sight. it is helping firefighters build containment lines. the fire was deliberately set on september 13 and so far it has destroyed 12 homes.

another 12,000 homes are threatened. they have a lot of rain up there in the king fire zone, pollock pines area, 80, an inch of rain in some places so that is all you need to know about that. that helps out. showers continue in the northern part of the state. thundershowers around chico. bay point. i like this because -- i like it when -- there is a live camera. and there is the satellite. when we were in school, that is what we looked at, what does that cloud correspond to. it gives yao an idea of what it -- you an idea of what it looks like out there. we will see a few showers, possible scattered showers tonight and tomorrow as the system moves out. there is thunderstorms around chico. storms moved towards the -- up

to the redding area. scattered showers middle town, clear lake. scattered showers continue into the morning hours tomorrow. i will show you that commute model. it shouldn't change the commute. whatever occurs will be scattered. as the low moves out, that was a significant rain. half inch. this low moves in. keeps the instability going and gives you a chance of a shower. you got to look for thundershowers too. there is a chance of thundershowers tomorrow as we head into friday. temperatures warm saturday and sunday and monday 90s again. fire danger back on the map. a lot of rain got soaked into the ground. we need a lot of rain. this is tomorrow morning. you get the idea. a tough one to pinpoint the cells. here is another area. same area. lingers into tomorrow morning.
