acknowledged the need to improve ambulance response times. >> i'm very confidence that we're going to get to where we need to get. >> reporter: the fire commission did not take any action tonight, a source tells me since no action was taken and no commissioner expressed concerns about fire chief joanne hayes-white it does not appear the commission will remove her from her job. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. and now to the weather and the bay area's first good soaking of the season. the showers started last night and lasted through today. and in fact, we're still seeing some sprinkles in some areas. chief meteorologist bill martin is here with how it's looking out there tonight. >> the sprinkles are mainly in southern california, but there's a chance that you could see some rain. you can see what i'm talking about. it was going off all around the

bay. mainly south of the oakland area. but it rained hard earlier in the santa rosa area this morning. let's take a peak at what we have here for what's occurring right now. we have rain showing up around the redding area. even some thundershowers. this is part of the low that's going to linger and move down over the area tonight and tomorrow. so there's a chance for a stray scatter shower and even a thundershower. when i come back we'll talk about that. rainfall accumulations over the last 24 hours up to a half inch in places like san francisco, i'll have all that as well. see you back here right after the break. you can follow bill and the rest of the ktvu weather team for the latest on conditions across the bay area. they're posting updates to instruct -- to twitter and facebook. a shooting left one man in the hospital with life threatening injuries. it started with an argument between two groups of people on novato. there was then a second fight.

the victim drove off in a jeep cherokee and was found later. there's no information on the gunman. and alex sadvige snapped this picture right after the theft. he said two men grabbed iphones and then rushed on to a car. so far no word of any arrests. the same apple store was hit back in may. this is video of a car that smashed through the front windows there. in that case burglars took about $40,000 worth of iphone, i pads, laptops and computers. and a new warning tonight about a software flaw affecting more than just computers. at 10:45, the bug just discovered that's also putting smart phones, internet routers even medical twices twices -- medical devises as risk and

mentioned on the list. but said i am honored to even be mentioned but intend to continue my work for the people of california as attorney general. and now to the latest on isis. the man dressed in all black is seen and heard on those videos. it's not clear if he is though the actual person who carries out the beheadings of the two american journalists and british aide worker. it's extremely likely he is british partly because of his accent. america's top executive officials say there's no information about a reported terrorist threat. iraq's prime minister said he's learned of a planned attack in the u.s. and paris. new york city has the largest subway system in the country and the city's mayor stressed

the threat is not concerned. >> we have received information which in the eyes of our government and nypd is not verified. we're taking precautions until we have more information. >> reporter: he said people should go about their business but be alert. new york always operating in a high the alert since it is has already been targeted. we're learning about the trouble going on with this apartment complex that has a city stepping in. >> i don't even know why they even have the department still up. carjacked while leaving her home. >> i honestly thought he was going to shoot me. >> the police chase that followed a suspect all across the area and how people trying to help were caught in gunfire.

a flipped suv right in the pheuld -- middle of san francisco's financial district. police shot and killed the driver, a suspected carjacker. the chase start over in the east bay a man carjacked a woman right before 5:00 in richmond. the suspect then drove the stolen suv across the richmond san rafael bridge then the golden gate bridge before crashing in the city. ktvu's mike mibach tells us, when people came up to see if he was okay he started shooting at them.

>> i started hearing all these ambulance. >> reporter: san francisco's financial district. >> it was unbelievable. >> reporter: a white escalate crashes into several vehicles. >> cops are yelling put the gun down, put the gun down. get out of the car, get out of the car. >> reporter: the escalade was ripped off from a woman in richmond just about an hour earlier. chp chased that driver into city streets where fpd took over. >> we lost the suspect. >> reporter: minutes later this collision occurred. >> when good samaritans went to the aid of the victim, he fired at good samaritans. then tried to pull himself out of the car. turned the gun at the officers. >> you just hear gunshots going off. >> bang, bang, bang, bang. >> we have the gun. >> you have the gun. >> did they get the suspect? >> suspect possibly down. >> yeah they killed him. >> reporter: mitchell told the story to those who stared into

this web of a crime scene. >> they're all looking out the windows. >> reporter: the escalate was towed away around 1:00 in the afternoon. streets in the area reopened but tonight the story is still the talk in this part of town. >> we had a lot of customers here in the morning, they possibly could have gotten hurt. that means you can't take life for granted. >> reporter: the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. several officers did open fire at that individual. as standard department policy those officers will be placed on paid leave during an investigation. mike mibach, ktvu news. today we spoke to the woman who was carjacked. she tells us she was on her way out about five -- 5:00 this

morning when an armed man opened the door to her suv. she says at that moment all she could think about were her two kids. the victim said she only learned about the rest of the story when she went to report the incident to police. ktvu's john sasaki takes us inside and tells us about the city's legal fight to make things better. >> reporter: from a distance the hillside apartments in east oakland appear maintained and manicure but take a closer look. >> they need to tear these units down and get rid of them. >> they have no money to put into this building. >> reporter: what these pictures show is even worse.

one woman says her two sons have both suffered countless bites from bugs which residents say invest the building. >> now they're fighting because somebody is picking on them because they're in class and you know they have a flea bite mark. >> reporter: but what has many residents deeply fearful is the unchecked rule of gang members. this music video which was clearly shot at the complex shows several people openly holding guns. >> there's activities on the premises involving a gang. a violent gang. so there's both shootings and intimidations. >> reporter: someone was shot to death outside the complex just last weekend. >> it's just been really just bad. the violence, the maintenance, just everything over here is just horrible. i don't even know why they even have these apartment buildings evennable still up. >> reporter: an official at the development told me by phone they have not been hit with

lawsuits. they're hoping for significant positive change at hillside by the end of the year. in oakland i'm john sasaki, ktv you can -- ktvu channel 2 news. after nearly a week of fighting a fire in the sierra foothills san francisco firefighters are finally back home tonight. we were there as they were unpacking and rolling up their hoses. the strike team have all been on the front lines fighting the rim fire. the rain helped firefighters make significant progress on that fire. about an inch of rain fell on el dorado and placer county where the fire is burning. the fire is now 55% contained that's up from 43% earl littler today. some of the evacuations have also been lifted. the fire started near pollock pines and so far it has burned more than 95,000 acres and destroyed 12 homes. significant rainfalling up in the mountains as well as

around the bay area. we had a half inch of rain in san francisco. of course it rained last week as well. the rainfall accumulations were heaviest during the early morning hours when we saw temperature or rainfall totals really start to come down. so it was right during the morning commute. numbers are going to come in, half inch in san francisco, half inch in the santa cruz mountains. really good news for lawns and poll -- foliage around the bay area. there's still a chance for showers as we head into the next 24 hours. heavy thunderstorms north of chico but right in this area by redding. this cell moved through. that was earlier this evening. this low is going to dip down over us tomorrow. it's going to be mostly sunny. it's going to be a nice day. but there will be a stray shower in the forecast as we go through the entire friday. the computer model does this, tomorrow morning there's fog at the coast. we have patchy fog, real patchy. then tomorrow there's your fog footprint then it burns back.

residents in mountain view are back home tonight. we first brought you this story last night at this time as developing news. two bodies were found at an apartment complex on california street. ann rubin has more information on the toxic substances found there and the warnings for those who live near by. >> reporter: unit 17 has been boarded up and police say the toxic gas has cleared. >> fire would not let folks go back in there. >> reporter: tests today showed levels of hydrogen sulphite as well as its product. >> it was foul smelling and, it was similar to a sewage stench. >> reporter: the fumes

overpowered four officers that arrived at the scene. >> they could have exploded or caught on fire. >> reporter: a few hours later the homeowners association president was given this letter warning residents to clean their units and throw away exposed food. >> anything that's open that they should probably throw that away. >> reporter: the issue for residents what happened here. so far police will only say they're investigating the deaths. neighbors report seeing three pieces of white scrap papers jammed into the unit. it was not a suicide note as originally thought. >> there was no suicide note left there. i can definitely confirm that part. >> reporter: neighbors say they're grieving for the family who lived here but are grateful the situation wasn't worse. >> if somebody did it on purpose, i mean my god. just think what would have happened if nobody reported it. you know we would be in a lot of danger. >> reporter: authorities say the danger here has passed although residents might notice

a persistent order over the next few days. ann rubin. emergency crews say the death of a swimmer at ocean beach in san francisco is a real reminder of just how dangerous the surf can be. we told you how a father and son were body surfing when they were swept away. the father died last night, his son remains in critical condition. the coast guard says that each year they respond to 50 to 60 drawnings. the case is very similar to one from last year. a teenager's body has never been recovered. earlier this morning a 20- foot sailboat was spotted. it was towed to sausalito. a blue and gold ferry had

three men are behind bars tonight for burglarizing a home in san jose. two of them were found near by

hiding in backyards. the dramatic scene all unfolded in the evergreen neighborhood of san jose this afternoon. >> new at 10:00, azenith smith reports that police believe these men could be responsible for other burglaries. she joins us live now from san jose, azenith. >> reporter: a hand full of other burglaries happened in this area just today. they say these men are an organized crew with look outs and a communication devices. and this comes as the latest number show the dollar amount of stolen property in san jose is at an all time high. >> reporter: our cameras were there when san jose police took down burglary suspects accused of victimizing a neighborhood in san jose. >> there are burglaries today we responded on this one we got them. >> reporter: just before 3:00 this afternoon, an alert neighbor called police. they found two men serving as look outs and two others inside the house trying to break into

a safe. they took off, a massive search followed. the neighborhood on lock down. >> we were just hanging out in the house. we saw a suspect hiding in our bushes. >> reporter: while one man was taken down by a police dog. another ran into dean yamashiro's house. >> he was laying down. they told him put your arms out and don't move. >> reporter: they say last year's reported stolen property value in the city of san jose a whopping $76 million. that's almost double from four years ago. >> i hope it doesn't go higher but we know that our police staffing is continuing to go down. >> reporter: as san jose police struggled with stopping and without a dedicated burglary investigation unit they're calling on the community for help. the other part of this is partnering with the community. >> and working together, working with the neighborhood groups and just letting them know to call us when they see

hawaii. airport officials briefed members of the san jose city council today on what they're doing to prevent things like these from happening in the future. >> increasing patrols of our airfield. you've also heard today we did a full scrutiny of our perimeter fencing just to determine if there are any potential weaknesses there. airport officials also say they are testing thermal imagining cameras along that perimeter. they say that reviewing the process of issuing ids to employees and making improvements. it happened in july on paradise drive when 70-year-old james simon and 69-year-old william osenten had some kind of disagreement on the road. simon drove home and pulled into his drive. osenten tried to follow him and that's when simon shot him twice. prosecutorred charged him with

a major new revelation in the ray rice saga. a law enforcement member said he sent the elevator video of rice knocking out his fiance to the nfl headquarters. that package was sent labeled attention to the chief of security miller. a woman from southern california has a remarkable story to tell about how she survived an attack from a huge bear. emily miles says she was or rather mills says he was walking in an avocado grove in santa barbara county on monday when she was confronted by the

bear. she knew it could kill her in an instant. so she tried to run but the bear grabbed her then sunk his teeth right into her leg. but she fought back. >> i was on my back kicking. my feet. flailing and yelling at the top of my lungs to get him away from me. then he just went down on all four paws then just walked away and he just kept looking back at me. >> state fish and wildlife is actively looking for the bear. if it's found and positively identified it will be killed. the results of a study on livestock said genetically engineered foods said there was no effect on the animal. they say the nutritional make up of the milk, meat and eggs of animals were the same as

we've heard of internet bugs affecting pcs. now there's a different type of bug that is putting macs. smart phones evenmedical devices at risk. it's called the shell shock. it could be more severe than the half bleed bug that affected half a million computers last year. we talk about security experts about who's most at risk. >> reporter: when nick weaver heard about the bash bug his fingers sprung to action. >> i looked at that bug for five minutes and i go, i can break into my server. >> reporter: a bug so easy to exploit he says you don't need a phd. simply adding a line of code is enough. >> it literally is hey web surfer, run this program that allows me to completely take

over your computer. within less than a day people have seen multiple attackers using this. >> reporter: weaver is a cyber security researchers at uc berkeley in the international computer science institute. he and others spent the day install to protect computers. those at cafes and homes may also be at risk. >> if you're running a web surfer, you're probably running a unit. if you're running a mail server you're probably running a unix. so this is the foundational code of the internet. >> reporter: many people though say they're not worried just yet. >> i think it's really on people's mind. people who have iphones aren't worried about it. >> i think people in general

are not aware they're at risk. >> reporter: people should install it immediately. window's computers are apparently not impact because they don't use the bash software. in berkeley, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. apple says it is working on a fix for the latest patch for its the iphone 6 system. the first patch released yesterday led to more trouble including complaints raging from no service to shrinking battery life. today iphone released instructions to install ios8 until another fix is ready. the dow fell 264 points closing below 17,000. nasdaq dropped 88. apple shares fell nearly 4%. other tech stocks had losses

too. the district attorney of san francisco filed a lawsuit against uber, lyft. some companies are making illegal and misleading claims about driver background checks. the prosecutors also say they have enough evidence to take the companies to court. >> we're also very, very, very convinced that the public is being jeopardized both financially and physically and we want to make sure the decisions are addressed. >> side car shared its letter with ktvu. the ceo says the car pooling program is not illegal. an uber spokesperson told ktvu that the company has not yet received a notice from prosecutors. >> reporter: much different tonight than last night. we already had sprinkles showing up in parts of the bay area. the rain this morning which is long gone. except for a few spray

sprinkles could come into the area. late and into tomorrow. but i think most of us will remain dry and mostly sunny tomorrow. highs tomorrow will be slightly warmer. maybe low 80s too. rain showing up in northern california. this cell up here you can see lightning strikes. see them flashing right there. a couple of lightning strikes. we've had lightning reports up in willow, up in chico earlier this evening. that's where the showers are, but the low which is just unstable and a little cooler will move over the bay area as we head into tomorrow. that could trigger a little something for us. i suspect if it did it would be very widely scattered and not many of us would everyone notice it because there's not a lot of moisture left over. but there's cool and stable air. we'll track that for you. the fog forecast for the morning hours. i have fog right now along ocean beach in san francisco and patchy. tomorrow it wants to fill in. you get some clouds then it's gone. the clouds do. temperatures tomorrow i think
