some day it will. we will get some this afternoon but it will be more scattered. yesterday was wide spread. this will be kind of more hit and miss. it's developing rapidly. and already sending in higher clouds to the north bay. a few showers right off the mendocino coast. this will be more late morning, early afternoon event. it looks like a pretty good event for the sierra nevada. for us some of the higher clouds already taking aim at marin county. it's on its way. it will develop. it will come into the afternoon. until we get the afternoon heating. that will help trigger some thundershower activity. 50s and 60s on the fetches. had a couple reports leoy up in clearlake showed a little bit of light rain. so it's kind of starting early. but some pockets of fog. showers, possible thundershowers later on today.

larkspur ferry terminal. you are talking to commuters? >> we haven't seen any commuters. we saw one earlier this morning. and he didn't want to talk to us on camera. there really haven't been that many. perhaps a lot of people opted to stay home from work this morning. it is still early. we'll have to wait and see. over here. over this way. you can see we have the strike going on. the picketers are walking here along the crosswalk. this is right in front of the golden gate ferry terminal. there are 1,000 people from the north pay that will have to find at way to work this morning. the reason the golden gate bridge district is offering 9% raises. but captains say they want 12%. the district argue that its captains at $80,000 a year out earn those in other fleets by far. >> we believe we are offering very fair wages. if you take a look at the ferry captains are making, they are the highest paid on the bay.

if if you go to any other ferry boat, you will be making less in salary and wanes. less many benefits packages. >> the district is really trying to put misinformation out there. if you look at the past decade, the labor coalition members are 12% behind the cost of living. because they have given up concessions. >> the district is not planning to have any extra buses today. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. we are continuing to follow the breaking news out of chicago as bell this morning. all flights have been halted at o'hare and midway airports because of a fire at an faa control center. those are the pictures. police in aurora, illinois have

also said that a man with a self-inflicted room has been found. tho flights are taking off or landing this morning. that will definitely have a ripple effect on travel across the country. flights to chicago are being diverted to other airports. airports in wisconsin and iowa are also being controlled. passengers should expect delays starting right about now. 6:00. brian flores is headed to sfo. he'll have have a live report coming up in a little bit. so he can check in on the air traffic there. three men are in jail accused of burglarizing a house in san jose. it happened in a neighborhood that has been hit hard with thefts lately. janine de la vega is joining us live to tell us about this growing crime trend out there.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning dave. we are here in the evergreen area. there is a neighborhood watch group here. one of the members called police earlier this week after observing a possible break in. when offices arrived, they ended up arresting three juveniles for the crime. and just yesterday our cameras were there when san jose police arrested burglary suspects that hit a neighborhood. an alert neighbor called police after observing suspicious activity. and when officers arrived, they found one man serving as a lookout and two others in a home break into a safe. less say these are good examples. in 2010 $47 million was reported stolen property in the city of san jose. and the latest numbers show it's up to $76 million. >> certainly $76 million is too much for the community to lose.

so far there is no word of any arrests. this is the same apple store that was hit back in may. you are looking at video here. a car smashed right through the front windows. now in that case, police say burglars stole about $40,000 worth of aye tones, ipads and laptops. a viewer also sent us a tip that someone told iphones from a store in san francisco yesterday. apple and google are getting praise for making new smart phones better than ever at protecting private data. the fbi's boss says that is a big problem for criminal investigators. james comby accuses google and apple making equipment for law enforcement. the fbi director says such measures like criminals place themselves above the law. apple has released a fix to its new ios8 operating system. apple yanked its software

update after getting complaints about customers not being able to make phone calls. time is 6:08. the fbi director says about a dozen americans are fighting along extremist groups in syria right now. earlier reports that 100 americans are fighting in syria. that wasn't correct. he says that number includes americans who have tried to go to syria and arrested. or went there and came back. fbi director comby says the fbi thinks they know the name of this man. those videos show the execution of two american journalists and

a british aid worker. that man dressed in black speaks with a british accent. transit systems all around the world are staying i have lent -- vigilant. while they don't have any hard information about a particular threat, they are concerned about subway systems that may be targeted. he received word from baghdad about a possible attack against the united states and france. new york city has the biggest subway network in the nation and new york's mayor stressed nothing is confirmed. >> we have received information which in the eyes of the united states government and nypd is not verified. what we are doing is taking precautions. >> new york officials are urging new yorkers go about your daily lives as normal.

fridays are typically light be. we have heard line four has not -- we know friday's ballpark ferry is caps led. you giants fans will have to make some other plans. contract negotiations are set to resume on monday. and of course we will keep you posted on how this strike is going. as well as alternate routes in order to get to work. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. now to our developing news we've been following about a fire at an faa control tower in illinois that has stopped most flights add chicago o'hare and midway airports. it's also having a ripple effect. brian flores is checking out the delays. what have you been able to find out? >> i just got off the phone with the on duty officer moments ago. he says right now there are not any real significant impacts. there are a few canceled flights.

that could certainly change with what is going on in chicago within the next half hour or even sooner. in fact, as we go to video now, they have a teleconference call with the faa as we speak on the next steps after this suspicious fire that broke out in chicago earlier this morning. now i did check with the website flight aware.com. two flights so far scheduled to leave this morning from sfo to chicago have been canceled. it's a southwest flight that was scheduled to leave at 6:30 this morning. an american airlines flight that was scheduled to leave at 6:00. just moments ago a united flight also scheduled to leave at 7:00 this morning is currently delayed. now airport officials could not say if that was the result of a fire that brocket as we've been talking about at faa radar center in aurora, illinois. what is making this case even more preparticular is along with the fire, police in aurora found a man with a self- inflicted gunshot wound in the basement of control center. he is currently being treated. police are not saying if it is

connected to the fire. lots of moving pieces. as we take you out here live, if you are headed to chicago this morning, keep an eye on your airline, keep informed with your airline to see if that flight is canceled or delayed. we do understand a small amount of flights that was circling around the airports from chicago have been allowed to land. but of course we will keep you updated here throughout the morning. there are new fears this morning about corrosion on the new span of the bay bridge. the san francisco chronicle reports several of the steel rods that anchor the new span may have roaded due to water leaks on the span. it believes the leaks may have dated back to 2010 before the tower was lowered into position. officials say the water has been drained but still unclear whether any rods were damaged. demolition of the new original span of the bay bridge is moving along. crews are taking apart the 78- year-old bridge in roughly the

reverse order on how it was built. demolition started back in april. 800 feet of the bridge has been taken down. the gap keeps getting bigger and bigger by the day. the project will be complete in four years. time is 6:36. security tighter this morning on bart and transit systems all over the country. because of reports of a possible threat from the islamic militant group known as isis. alex savidge is live this morning in orinda with more on what bart police are asking from the public. >> dave, good morning to you. police are urging bart riders to be on the lookout for anything suspicious and report anything they say right away. there is no specific threat against the bart system. a bart police officer did confirm to us there will be extra officers on patrol in some key areas of the system. this move comes in response to a potential terror plot.

iraq's prime minister said yesterday that isis militants told his countries intelligence agents about an alleged plot to attack subways in both the u.s. and paris. u.s. law enforcement agencies are investigating the threat but they haven't uncovered any credible plot thus far. in new york city security has been stepped up on the countries largest subway system in response to the reports. one bart rider we talked to said they will not do anything different because of this potential threat. >> you are always concerned. but i'm not to worry. >> anything different? >> absolutely not. i think the police in this country is pretty good. so not to worry. >> law enforcement officials are still investigating these reports. however the fbi director said he was unaway of any direct

threat. again we want to let you know bart police will be doing additional patrols for the foreseeable future. live in orinda alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. a man in san rafael fighting for his life after a shooting that started with an argument. it happened on novato street. two groups of people started fighting and someone pulled out a gun and shot the victim. that wounded man drove away in a jeep cherokee. he was found a couple blocks away way on winward way. police and firefighters were called to the building on california street wednesday night after receiving reports of a gas like odor. tests show that the gas

contained high levels of two potentially toxic chemicals. investigators are not sure if those chemicals caused the two deaths duh they did cause fumes strong enough to force evacuations. >> they could have you know, exploded or at least caught on fire or something like ha. that is why it was important to go ahead and air everything out. and have everyone evacuated as well. >> police now say a note found at the scene was not a suicide note as first reported. but they were not revealing what was written on the note. your time is 6:40. this week's rain is really helping those firefighters on the king fire east of sacramento. now the fire is 55% contained. it's burned more than 95,000 acres though in the sierra nevada foothills. 289 homes and buildings remain threatened this morning. that is a big improvement from yesterday morning when thousands of homes were in danger. six people have been hurt.

welcome back. time is 6:44. three men are in jail accused of burglarizing a house in san jose. it happened in a neighborhood that has been hit hard with thefts. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live now from san jose to tell us about the growing crime trend. >> reporter: police say a neighbor here called them after watching a possible break in and that led to three arrests. someone called in suspicious activity. here's video taken yesterday when san jose police took down burglary suspects accused of victimizing a neighborhood in the evergreen neighborhood. it was an alert neighbor when called police after observing that suspicious activity. they found one man serving as a look out and two others in a home breaking into a safe. police are encouraging

residents to step up their relationships with neighbors and form watch groups. the police officers association tells us in 2010, $47 million was reported stolen property in the city of san jose. the latest numbers show there is an increase up to $76 million. that concerns neighbors. >> you know i have an alarm. all it does is limit the time it can have in the house. it doesn't prevent them from breaking in. we have already been broken in twice. police have caught one of the thieves in that man in his backyard. the suspect was hiding. the police officer association is concerned because of low staffing. they say more retirements are happening in the plaid and officers have left to go to other cities for belter pay enbenefits. while they are working hard to try to do more with less, residents can help combat property crime. some of their recommendations
