solano county till 8:45 p.m. another update in 10 minutes. new at 6:00 p.m. a bay area school is getting ready to shut down to deal with a flee problem. the flee problem could be tied to the drought. ktvu's paul chambers is live now where he learned school officials may have to close several campuses to spray for the flees. >> reporter: officials discovered there was a flee problem at one school but there is a possibility it may be at several other campuses. >> reporter: recess meant lots of students playing outside. one area they are not allowed to play in, the grass. >> we had reports from students on flee beats. >> today officials made sure the students stayed off the grass. tonight they are closing down the campus for the weekend to spray the area safely. this is just the beginning of

what could be a larger problem. if there are flees here, there is a good chance other campuses are facing the same problem. >> we will make sure -- assess the situation. we could be spraying at all our campuses. >> reporter: good news for pest control agencies. his company received twice as many calls for flee problems this year than last. >> we had a huge drought problem in the last couple years, especially this year the flee problem escalated. >> reporter: officials assure parents the chemicals will not be an issue. and although people walk their dogs near the school, officials don't believe it is the problem. >> it is not because of dogs. >> reporter: many parents didn't know there was an issue however leaders said they notified parents about the problem and solution. live, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news.

an uber driver accused of hitting a passenger in the head with a hammer was in court in san francisco for arraignment. the 26-year-old pleaded not guilty yesterday to assault with a deadly weapon. according to documents he hit his passenger with a hammer while they were arguing about the route he was taking. the victim suffered trauma to the head. uber put out a statement. they say safety is their number one priority and that we take reports like this seriously and are treating the matter with the utmost urgency and care and it is our policy to suspend the driver. we spoke to the district attorney, he says the driver had no prior criminal record but the investigation is continuing. two people are dead after a

van slammed head on into a bus on the peninsula today. it happened on south el camino real. ktvu's cristina rendon is live at the scene with an update on the investigation. >> the north bound lanes of south el camino real are back open to traffic. but before that this area was shut down for four hours. we are across the street from amotio hear. you can see the -- mortuary. you can see the markings on the street. two people died and five others were hurt. the accident happened around 12:45 p.m. on south el camino real. the van swerved and hit the bus. she saw the crash while on her way to a funeral. >> it is horrifying. i had to walk past it to get to the funeral. >> woman in the passenger seat of the van died immediately and the driver died on the way to

the hospital. no one on board was seriously hurt. >> the bus driver is shaken. this is a significant accident. >> reporter: it is upsetting to see what unfolded on a sad day for her. >> i am on my way to a funeral and to find out both of the passengers that i witnessed did both pass away. >> reporter: mese say they are still investigating what may have caused the driver to swerve -- police say they are still investigating what may have caused the driver to swerve and hit the bus. cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. both a father and his son have died after they were caught in a rip tied at ocean beach. the two were pulled underwater on wednesday.

they have been identified as a 47-year-old and a 24-year-old. they were pulled out of the water but it was too late. the medical examiner says both men died in the hospital following the rescue. there are major flight delays in the bay area and across the country following a fire at a air traffic control center near chicago. a live picture of san francisco international airport where 9 arrivals and 9 departures were canceled today. delays of 3 hours were reported. at oakland, cancellations include all southwest flights to and from chicago and four mineta international airport. investigators say today's fire at the air traffic control center in chicago was deliberately set by a contract employee. they have ruled out a connection to terrorism. investigators say the man face

as felony count. it is unclear whether he intended to commit suicide but he has been hospitalized with self-inflicted wounds. firefighters are making progress on the king fire that is burning east of sacramento. it is 68% contained up from 55% last night. it burned 96,000 acres and 12 homes. firefighters northeast of pollock pines are headed out of areas that are no longer in dangerous but the forest service says there will be much more work ahead once the firefighters are gone. >> unfortunately this isn't going to be over soon. once the fire is controlled we will be moving in to rehab activities. >> over the next few months they will have to tend to examine the soil to prevent sediment from rushing down stream into the water supply.

a one day strike by ferry captains will wrap up in a couple hours. it stoped running this morning and some bus drivers also called in sick. ktvu's david stevenson tells us today's strike made an impact on more than just commutes. david? >> reporter: the bus ridership figures will be available next week but casual observers are talking about how this one day strike is being felt in different ways around the bay. >> reporter: they saw fewer tourists due to the strike by ferry captains. >> definitely. yeah. when the ferries comes in there is a few hundred people. definitely. the foot traffic. >> reporter: mindful of the impact the strike was having on thousands of commuters. >> we want to be at work.
