tonight pittsburgh police have called a crew so they can detonate a suspicious device. the device was discovered near pittsburg high school at summers and school streets. authorities have told us the device is definitely not a bomb but they are taking precautions during the process to try to dismantle that device. we're sending a news team and we will bring you more details as soon as we have more information. >> this is in the daytime pretty much everybody here

day. >> thank goodness no one else was out here. >> reporter: and why they want the driver responsible. >> he could have definitely killed my wife, my kid, anyone on the street. he came literally across the sidewalk. so i hope he gets what he deserves for this one. >> reporter: police say the driver is 49 and from concord. but no word on his dui record. he is hospitalized now with a broken pelvis. and the hammonds say once they backyard is all fixed up they plan to fix this little bit of debris on their new fence as a reminder of how close they came. debora villalon, ktvu news. mobile homes and businesses damaged or destroyed in a rash of suspicious fires and officials tell ktvu that all signs tonight point to arson. alameda firefighters raced from call to call during a four hour stretch. cristina rendon spoke to those

impacted by the fires and she also talks about arrests made in the cases. >> reporter: a string of fires lit up the sky early sunday sending bay area firefighters racing from one scene to the next on the trail of a couple of firebugs. >> they are crazy. they don't care about other people. >> reporter: this man watched his dry cleaning business of 40 years go up in flames. it's one of eight sites set ablaze in a couple of hours. >> i always think of alameda being safe. and yesterday it wasn't. it's startling. >> reporter: a task force made up of investigators from alameda fire, berkeley fire and the bureau of tobacco and firearms conducted an investigation. francisco hernandez salvaged what he could from his charred duplex thankful to have his family by his side after the night. >> the first thing i wanted to

caught fire early friday morning. so far no arrests on those oakland cases. a fatal accident in sonoma county closed the route. the driver of one vehicle died at the scene. the driver and passenger of the other vehicle were air lifted to hospitals with major incidents. >> it does appear that, that one of the vehicles according to a witness crossed over a double yellow line. and struck the other vehicle head on. >> reporter: we're told someone passing by had just received emt training and tried to help. investigators haven't said yet whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. the investigation closed both highway 121 both directions for almost 3-1/2 hours and the road wasn't reopened until after 2:00 this morning. now to san jose where a homicide investigation continues following the shooting there last night. police haven't released much

about the incident that we brought you as breaking news. they tell us the unidentified man was shot just before 9:30 last night on ozekure avenue in south san jose. the killing is san jose's 29th homicide this year. there were 34 homicides at this same time last year. one person was hurt, more than a dozen forced out of their homes after an apartment fire in richmond last night. when crews arrived they found about 15 people standing outside. one person went to the hospital for smoke inhalation. fire officials say that they had heard reports from resident that is this fire may have started by a meth lab explosion but so far they haven't been able to confirm that. dozens of protesters were taken to the hospital in hong kong today after a face off with police. this is video of police tossing tear gas into the crowd of occupy activists. protesters are demanding elections that are fully

democratic. the demonstrators are refusing to leave the city's financial district until their demands are met. as joe giaro reports it's a protest that could place protesters behind bars. >> reporter: police threw tear gas. 26 people were taken to hospitals. some carried away on stretchers. it's the worse unrest hong kong has seen since china took back control of the city from great britain in 1997. the group called occupy center with love and peace is leading protest. >> the occupation is beyond our expectations. >> reporter: the protesters camping outside government headquarters since last friday they're demanding communist leaders allow fully democratic elections in 2017 but beijing insists on using a committee to screen candidates on their

31 people are now presumed death. their bodies all found near the top. that volcano erupted yesterday about 150 miles west of tokyo. about 250 people scrambled to safety. others were rescued. evacuations have been difficult due to continued seismic activity. more than 500 flights were cancelled at o'hare today and another 100 at midway. the faa says the situation has improved and will keep improving monday. illinois senator dick durbin is calling for a search before his alleged rampage on

sunday. contract employee bryan howard entered the building with a black suitcase that was apparently not searched. police say howward cut cables, set fire to the facility with gasoline soaked rags then tried to kill himself. he faces up to 20 years in prison. howard had a full security khraerpbs -- clearance and had been working at the center for several years. governor brown signed a sexual assault rule that defines when yes means yes. now the law defines consent as quote an affirmative, conscious agreement. silence or lack of resistance does not equal consent. critics say this law overreaches and creates confusion for investigators. not shaking but rocking in

critical condition. his age though has not been released. officials are trying to determine tonight if one gunman was behind this or several. witnesses say they heard at least 100 shots from four different guns. family and friends in texas are mourning the loss of four college softball players in the way back from a game after a semi crashed into their bus. >> she was actually getting engaged to her boyfriend rick -- victor. she wanted to become a nurse. she wanted to help people. >> the crash late friday happened in oklahoma. police say the truck driver who collided with the bus admitted he was distracted when he crossed the divide. in addition to the deaths a dozen people were injured. an update now on our

breaking news from pittsburg where police have ordered a shelter in place so that a crew can detonate a suspicious device. within the last 45 minutes we received a reverse 911 call telling people to stay inside there. the device it was discovered near pittsburg high school at somers and school streets. authorities have told us that the device is definitely not a bomb. but they are taking precautions during a process to try to dismantle that device. residents are advised there to stay indoors, close all windows and doors and only use phones for emergencies. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll bring you more details on this story as soon as we have them. both here, on the air as well as on facebook and twitter. new at 10:00 tonight. a hearing is scheduled for tomorrow in the case against east palo alto gang members arrested during operation sunny day. that operation lasted for seven months and they looked into jewelry store robberies.

a total of 16 people were arrested for violent crimes including murder and armed robbery. at tomorrow's hearing prosecutors will request that grand jury transcripts are insealed for burglary charges in this case. it had everything your typical concert has. food, drinks and a lot of music but this four event means a lot more to the people of napa. >> plus it was an agonizing wait for all you a's fans right down to the last day of the regular season. but today, all the champane was flowing as the team now heads to the play offs. >> lots of clouds today. even a few light showers. coming up when the clouds will be moving out of town in the updated five day.

two policinvestigations are under way after two police officers were shot within hours of each other. the first shooting occurred last night when a ferguson police officer was shot in the arm while on patrol. authorities say he went to do a building check and saw someone

run away. when the officer got out of the car police say the suspect turned around and shot him. the officer returned fire but the suspect wasn't found. >> as he came into very close proximity with him, one of the individuals turned with the firearm. the officer was able to block it with his arm then was shot in the arm by one of the suspects. the officer is in an area hospital. he's expected to survive. a drive by shooting near the st. louis airport injured an off duty officer in his vehicle. authorities don't think the incidents are linked to the shooting of unarmed teenager michael brown. police will meet tomorrow to discuss an officer involved shooting after a chase. a suspect crash into a vehicle

in the financial district and when some good samaritans tried to help him they shot at him. officers say they opened fire when the man refused to drop his gun. san francisco's 49ers player mcdonald may be suspended or see his contract end all together but only after he is is found guilty. meanwhile nfl commissioner roger goodell visited the national domestic hot line in texas today. new funding from the nfl has allowed the staff to expand. the hot line's chief checktive says goodell listened to calls that were coming in. >> he was very attentive. very responsive.

it's been just over a month now since an earthquake destroyed homes and businesses in napa. >> we want to thank everybody what came out here today. we're all here for the same reason. >> if it moves you, shake it a little bit. >> reporter: today napa rocked. the napa rocks concert had feet tapping, raising glasses of red and white to help napa recover. >> incredible how much we've come together as one. to look at how many people are here. >> reporter: more than 3,000 people came to today's sold out event. >> really to raise awareness that napa is open for business. that the quake didn't destroy the town by any means. >> the scars are still visible. but napa is brushing itself off and hoping tourists will help

the central valley this morning southeast of san jose. it was centered in san benito in merced county and 30 miles east of soledad. people along the coast reported feeling that quake. there are no reports of any injuries or damage. here at 10:00 tonight, governor brown has signed a bill to give $3 million to doctors medical center in san pablo. the hospital is facing a possible shut down due to ongoing financial problems as we reported right here on ktvu. at times that hospital has been diverted ambulances to other facilities. skinner described the hospital as a safety net for richmond and other west contra costa communities. passengers boarding a plane were quickly evacuated this afternoon because of a suspicious carry on bag. the bag was in an overhead bin and it had wired sticking out of it. it happened on a flight bound

for oregon. but the bag belonged to a crew of a tv show. the flight resumed about two hours later. more than 30 mayors are expected to take part in the conference. with the recent series of demonstrations in ferguson, mayor greg fisher of louisville kentucky says it's a matter of balancing the safety of police and residents. >> the intermediate part of dialogue must begin. state water officials may deal with drought by issuing a budget for each household. the budget will be assessed

based on the size of the household and outdoor needs. households who go over their water allocations would pay extra. southern california counties are already using the strategy. there are reports that state officials may have the information they need to start handing out water budgets by next month. farmers are certainly feeling the impact of the drought right now as they harvest smaller crops such as grapes and almonds. an estimated 420,000 acres went unplanted due to the lack of water this year. that's about 5% of the total amount of farmable land. water costs have also been higher. they are estimating the financial impact at $2.2 billion out of a $44 billion industry. tipping back a cold one during the game is an american tradition. for those who are having a second thought, there may be a more healthy alternative. >> reporter: it's called

we've been watching this guy over the last couple of days. we're talking about warming temperatures. a little bit for monday and tuesday and the warming trend really kicks in later in the week for thursday and friday. take a look at some of the numbers expected on friday. santa rosa 90 degrees. san francisco 84. livermore in the mid-90s and san jose 91. this is the direction we're heading and with that fire danger it goes up as well. for thursday, friday and saturday. no warnings in place with those warm often shore winds but those kick in with a morning kicking in with an increase. maybe a little bit of drizzle out there as well. partly cloudy skies at the coast. more sunshine inland and this will set the stage for a warming trend. tomorrow not too much change. santa rosa 79. lower 80s out toward antioch and brentwood. sunny vale 73 and san francisco in the upper 60s. here's a look ahead in your
