people living near the high school heard this noise when the bomb squad was called out. coming up, what the item was that had police so concerned and why the landlord of the property thinks it may have been left there. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> let's talk about weather and traffic. things are changing. >> they are indeed. we do have the thunderstorm clowng that's too far east. that will not be a factor unless you are up there in reno watching us. there's a big fog bank out there. one system moves out, another one bumping it out of the way. 50s or 60s on the temperatures. had some 40s for a while. now it looks like the fog is going to win out.

53 la honda. 55 menlo park. and everyone is close here. a lot of low clouds. fog, sun, then nice today is kind of that tweener day where we get rid of the tropical clouds or the high and mid- level clouds. but the fog even with the that, the temperatures are on the mild side. here's sal. >> traffic on 80 westbound is going to be slow. now 37 minutes. every time we come back ten minutes more on the drive time from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. and you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, we have about a 20- minute drive time into san francisco with most of it waiting here at the toll plaza. we've had a terrible commute in the livermore valley. 680 southbound was affected by earlier crash. westbound 580 is slow. even 84 which is i would say not even close to a good alternate route is jammed. so you just have to give

yourself plenty of extra time if you are driving on 580, 680 or 84 in the livermore valley. 7:02. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. topping our news, a bomb square led to evacuations and a shelter-in-place order in one east bay neighborhood. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from pittsburg with more on the suspicious item that brought in the boom squad and the man police are now searching for. good morning. alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. the item that had police so worried overnight turned out to be several road flares wrapped together with rifle shells on the outside. this suspicious item was detonated by the bomb squad late last night here on the lawn at pittsburg high school. the bomb squad blew it up out here after it was found inside a nearby apartment. and this morning, police say they are searching for the former tenant who lives in the unit recently evacuated from that place. the landlord told ktvu his cleanup crews discovered the object around 9:30 last night.

this building is on the 1500 block of summer street very close to pittsburg high school. people living nearby were ordered to stay inside their homes as the walnut creek bomb squad came in and they used a robot to get a closer look at what was believed to be an explosive device and the bomb squad decided not to take any chances. [sound of explosion] >> reporter: that was the dramatic scene as the situation was brought under control. now pittsburg police are looking for the man who used to live in the apartment. the landlord believes he left this trying to cause a panic. he believes it was a hoax because the device didn't have much in the way of explosive power. pittsburg police are not identifying the former tenant who lived in the unit, the man that prompted this bomb scare, but they are working to track him down and question him

further about the item left behind in the unit. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:04. we're getting a look at surveillance video of a break- in at an electric bicycle shop in san francisco. it happened early this morning at the electric bicycle superstore on fillmore street. you can see the burglars had smashed windows and walked away with two bikes. the owner of the bike shop said someone on the saw the broken glass and stole a third bike. electric bikes can cost $2,000 to $3,000 each. tara moriarty is heading to the shop. we'll have a live report at 7:30. happening today -- san francisco police will hold a community meeting about last week's chase that ended in a deadly police shooting in the financial district. now, police say it all started early thursday morning when a man carjacked a woman in richmond. he led police over a chase across the richmond bridge, the

golden gate bridge and then crashed in san francisco at california and battery streets. police say when some good samaritans tried to help the man out of the wreckage, he fired shots at them. police say they opened fire on the man when he refused to drop his gun. today's community meeting is at noon at pier 1 along the embarcadero. 7:05. members of a concord family say they actually feel lucky after a suspected drunk driver plowed into the backyard of their home. it happened early yesterday morning on busy concord boulevard where the family was sound asleep. investigators say the dui suspect was driving at more than 100 miles an hour when he plowed into a fence and spun out in the family's backyard. the family says this terrifying incident could have easily ended in tragedy. >> he was probably going around 100 miles an hour down the tree. they thought he fell asleep. if it was a different time of

day, if we were sitting out here in the chairs or hunter was playing. >> no one inside the home was hurt. the suspect was taken to the hospital with several broken bones. 7:06. it seems like the 49ers still haven't figured out how to quickly get cars out of the parking lot after a game at the levi stadium. yesterday, 70,000 people packed leave vie stadium to -- levi stadium to watch the 49ers win. the mood of the fans, those happy mans quickly change -- fans quickly changed once they got into their cars to drive home. this is what it was like as frustrated and fans got stuck in huge traffic jams just trying to get out of levi stadium. >> it seems like everyone is frustrated. the traffic flow doesn't seem to be that great. everyone is yelling at each other. >> this is ridiculous. we pay so much money, season ticketholder to come to the

game anyway. this is way worse than candlestick. >> the 49ers are doing everything possible to tackle the ongoing traffic problems at levi stadium. the 49ers are still urging fans to carpool or take public transportation on game days. well, the 49ers had to come from behind to get that first regular season win at the stadium. eagles scored three touchdowns and were up 21-13 in the first quarter until kaepernick hit johnson for a spectacular touchdown to bring the 9ers within 1. the 49ers kicked field goals and then there was an interception with under a minute left to secure the win. the raiders, they were in london to play the dolphins. oakland took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. but the dolphins came back and took the lead and then carr left the game with ankle and

knee injuries. the dolphins won it 38-14. no word on whether carr will be able to play against san diego after the raiders' bye week. according to the san francisco chronicle, sources say head coach dennis allen could be fired and replaced by offensive line doech tony -- line coach tony sporano. hundreds are in line at the palace hoping to be on "american idol." brian flores is out there now. i'm singing his prices. they are supposed to pass out wristbands to singers. brine, i'm not push you to sing. >> reporter: yes, you are, dave. >> yes, i am. >> reporter: stop lying. it's not going to happen. >> okay. >> reporter: we'll end that right now. stop asking. good morning, we're live here in daly city. you guys excited or what?

[ cheers ] >> reporter: many people getting ready. we're getting ready for season 14 here of american idol. ♪ >> reporter: now, for many it's their chance to go as far back as this singer in 2012. singers must be 15. hopefuls started to line up. organizers say the audition process will last for most of the day. if you have to go would work and have a lunch break, you can still register and try out. wristbands will be distributed at 7:00 this morning. producers say once bands are given, they will be hold to enter the arena. ryan seacrest will be here around 8:30 and then the auditions begin. we spoke to several people. some have been here since 9:00 last night camping out in their

in parts of the east bay. here on the golden gate bridge, there's fog. but the commute does look good. we'll tell you more about the trouble spots in the east bay. there's plenty of fog to go around. but the thunderstorm clouds have moved out after a very interesting friday into sunday. that's gone. there are changes later this week of a different sort. we'll talk about that.

in hong kong riot police using tear gas to break up protest in what's being called the umbrella revolution. thousands gathered near hong kong's government headquarters protesting against china and calling for free elections. demonstrators are using masks and umbrellas to protect against pepper spray and tear gas. many of the protesters are students who say they are not afraid of clashes with the police. >> as long as it takes.

as long as there's one person out here on this highway. >> now, hong kong is a former british colony. it went back to chinese rule in 1997. it's a major finance am hub for asia. china has blocked images of the protests from appearing on instagram, twitter and on youtube. 7:15. a suspicious bag belonging to a tv crew caused quite a scare at the los angeles airport. passengers were boarding an oregon-bound plane when someone noticed a bag in an overhead bin with wires sticking out of it. police were called and passengers were told to get off the plane. a bomb squad examined bag. but it only contained filming equipment for a reality tv show. the whole incident did cause a two-hour delay. 7:16. a well-known santa cruz shoplifter has been arrested. 45-year-old shawn filo was wanted in connection with stealing electronics from a costco on three different

occasions. police nicknamed him l. muse dasho the magician because of his mustache and he has ugg style boots that linked him to the crime. he has a history of theft and drug-related arrests. forbes magazine we leased its list of the 400 richest people in america. it is harder than ever to join the ranks this year. the price of entry is $1.55 billion. the highest it's been since forbes started tracking american health in 1982. bill gates tops the list for the 21st straight year with 81 billion. warren buffett is second at 67 billion. a notable newcomer to the list is number 110. that's 30-year-old stanford dropout elizabeth holmes.

she's valued at 4.5 billion. when she was 19, she founded a blood testing company with the money that she saved for college. third on the list is larry ellison who will be stepping down as ceo from oracle. 60,000 people are expected to attend this week and several streets in the south of market neighborhood are blocked off to traffic for oracle openworld. sal is watching that. streets are closed around that area, right? >> that's right, dave and tori. right now, howard street is closed between third and fourth. that means a lot of the traffic that gets through. a lot of people use howard to get down south of market to the bay bridge or to the freeway there. and you have to go the long way around. that puts more pressure on other streets. the best way to get to that area is public transportation and by the way, sales force has something similar coming up at the end of the year. we're going to see this a lot

in this time of the year down south of market. let's take a look at the livermore valley. boy, is it a mess. westbound 580 is very slow. 680 we had an earlier accident in fremont and traffic coming out of san ramon. that's right, san ramon slows all the way down into the fremont area and 84 is also very slow out of livermore. people will be in a slightly bad mood, i think, if they are driving through this traffic before they get to the office. let's take a look at the toll plaza. westbound it is backed up all the way out to the macarthur maze. this is about a 20-minute drive into san francisco. if you are driving on -- what are we going next? if you are driving over to -- let me see what we're going to. the east shore, let's see if i can get that back. 44 minutes, the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. as i said, every time we go to it, it gets worse. let's go to steve. a very good morning. a very foggy morning. there is a lot of low clouds

around. some areas reporting visibility, not much of a breeze. but thunderstorm clouds have moved off to the east. we don't have to worry about that after a weekend full of it. a foggy day more sunshine and later this week, it will be warming up. we have to wait until wednesday. some clouds holding on a little bit near reno and the crested sierra. but most of it pushing off into nevada. it should be gone by this afternoon. the fog bank is there large and in charge. inland temperatures will be slow to recover even though we lose the higher clouds, tropical clouds, if you will. there's not much of a breeze but there is a compo po comment of a werl -- component of a westerly breeze. cool in the higher elevations. a lot of low 50s. gilroy is at 60. east san jose already 64. fremont is 655. sunnyvale, 58. temperature temps have come down. bodeba bay is now 61. that's still very warm for

them. san francisco 62. monterey was 66. now 63. but there is a lot of very warm ocean temps there. 34 in tahoe. 44 in reno. 63 l.a. and fresno. the clouds right just started to clip the sierra nevada. for us, the low clouds might be slow to burn off. that means more sunshine today. the low give it credit. is stuck around for a couple of days. it looks like the rain is done. high pressure builds in and temperatures will go up. this could be an offshore breeze as well, which will mean the coast will warm up. that won't be until thursday, friday, saturday. fryer danger going up. we'll keep an eye on that. today and tomorrow a lot of fog. fog, sun, nice, cool morning. mild for others. sunny to mostly sunny. 76 kentfield. sonoma, 79. napa is in there. santa rosa one better. st. helena, clearlake at 81. martinez, 76, brentwood and oakley low 80s. oakland, berkeley, alameda, san leandro, hayward, all close.

livermore at 79 degrees. low 80s in morganhill and gilroy. 60s, 70s, coast and south san francisco, a lot of mid-70s on the peninsula. it looks like carbon copy for tuesday. the fog will burn off. and then we warm it up. it looks warm to hot. by the weekend, though, they should start to come down a little bit. 7:21. it we talk about potato salad? hundreds of people went to a party in ohio thrown by the man who raised $55,000 kick starter to make potato salad. it started in july when zach asked for $10 to buy ingredients for the salad. his mission grew worldwide attention. he eventually raised more than $10, yeah. but 300 pounds of salad was raised for the event. he raised around $50,000. he's now using his of the post

campaign donations to support charities that fight hunger and homelessness. >> it started as a joke. he had never made potato salad before and got 55 grand. well, the king fire continues to burn in el dorado county. coming up in 12 minute, the conditions that have helped firefighters and even caused some to be sent back home. but first a daring rescue. it happened in sacramento. how a man ended up down in a mineshaft. and what it took for firefighters to rescue it.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." toxics gases have stopped the recovery efforts after a deadly volcanic eruption in central japan. this is a popular hiking destination. the volcano erupted on saturday. hundreds of hikers were on the mountain at the time. most managed to escape safely but others are still trapped this morning. at least 31 people are believed to be dead. some of the bodies were found

buried in more than a foot of that volcanic ash. back here at home, they are still counting how much money was raised but thousands of people showed up to support the victims' napa earthquake during a four-day festival. ♪ >> bands, restaurants, wineries, they all came together pitching in to help with an event called napa rocks. thousands of people bought tickets to the soldout event. organizers say the idea was to bring people together to celebrate napa. it also was to remind everybody, especially people who don't live there, that napa is still a great place to visit. all of the profits from napa rocks will help the quake victims get back on their feet. 7:26. a daring rescue by firefighters in sacramento after a man and his atv fell into a mineshaft. when firefighters got there, the man was being crushed by the vehicle. they think the driver hit a tree stump and fell 30 feet

into the mineshaft. barbed wire held the vehicle above him. firefighters called in a technical rescue team and used a harness to save the man. he was bruised and bleeding but is expected to be okay. eight fires within a few hours. the string of arsons in one city and how federal investigators are now involved. window smashed and bikes stolen from a san francisco store. the brazen theft all caught on tape. some commutes out there are okay and some are really not. this is one that seems okay. 880 northbound and southbound through oakland. but we have some slow traffic in the east bay. we'll get to that coming up. a lot of reports of fog. but it looks like the sun is starting to burn off some of that in san jose. we'll see what's in store for the rest of the week.

7:30. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." it's monday, september 29th. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. i did duck outside. >> what's it like? >> i gotta talk to steve. gray, kind of gloomy outside our door. >> well, it will be sunny later. >> okay. >> we had some morning fog. thunderstorm clouds have moved out. there is a lot of fog out there. it will be slow to burn off for some. otherwise, sunny, not much of a change in temperatures. a lot of 50, a few 60s. everyone is pretty close up even up to the north.

had a couple of 40s but they disappeared. 52 calistoga. petaluma. fog means a lot of gray even though the ocean temps are very warm. cool morning to mild. the thunderstorm clouds have moved enough so that we'll have sunshine. here's sal. good morning to you, steve. we're looking at slow traffic in many areas of the east bay. highway 24 is getting slower. i've been watching the slow traffic build up in la fayette. you can see it's slow in the picture but it's also slow in orinda as you make your way to oakland. traffic on 680 is slow from concord to walnut creek. ette very slow in pittsburg and baypoint. highway 37 is open in case you haven't heard. you probably already know that. it's open and traffic is slow in the area. the worst commute in the bay, 580 and 680. 580 through livermore and dublin. 680 from san ramon to fremont.

superslow. let's go to the toll plaza. that's about a 20-minute delay there. in san jose, northbound 280 is getting slower. northbound 85 at 87 there is a new crash. 7:31. back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. there have been some disappointed hikers this morning, wanting to head up mission peak. that's because new hours are in effect there. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live to exexplain the reasons and -- explain the reasons and changes behind it. >> reporter: there is a sign alerting people about the changed hours but i want to show you the parking lot on stanford avenue. now, it only has 42 parking spots here. by 6:30 this morning, it was nearly full. people start to park in the neighborhoods down below and that's what's causing a problem. people started to show up at mission peak preserve at 5:00 a.m. that's when the park used to

open. they were surprised to find a sign with new hours. they now have to wait until 6:30 a.m. besides all of the traffic congestion it's causing east bay regional park district officials say heavy foot traffic is causing soil erosion. mission peak has become increasingly popular for the sweeping view of the bay. [no audio] >> i come once a week. i came up. so it's inconvenient to wait until 6:30. >> reporter: will you still be able to come? >> yeah but i might have to switch up my work. it will be hard. >> reporter: the hike is three miles. there's no water and rest stops. park officials say pair mid exare often called because people are unprepared. the district wants to make sure people stay seauf and they want to protect the trail. the park close es. it used to be open until 10:00 at night. now it closes at 7:30 p.m.

in november, it starts to close at 6:00 p.m. the sign says violaters could be cited and fined up to $300. on the first day, we didn't see anyone breaking the rules but park officials are encouraging people who may want an easier park to use the trail and park at the college instead of here at stanford avenue. reporting live from fremont, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:34. an arson task force that includes federal investigators is looking into the string of arsons in alameda. early yesterday morning, at least eight fires were set in a seven-block area in scwust a few hours. firefighters say -- in just a few hours. firefighters say cars and dumpsters were set on fire. four families were displayed by the fires and three businesses were damaged or destroyed. >> i thought it was an accident. never thought there was such a thing to burn a house.

>> two people were arrested on suspicion of arson. one is a 27-year-old man from alameda. the other a 22-year-old transient. their names have not been released. the task fork is checking surveillance video and gathering evidence from the fire scene. fires in alameda happened two days after five suspicious fires were set in east oakland early morning friday morning, a house, warehouse, a car and pile of debris were set on fire. no word on the arrests for the oakland fires. police have not said if the same people arrested for the alameda fires may be connected to those set in oakland. cooler, wetter weather over the weekend. that's really helping firefighters battle the king fire in el dorado county. it's burned more than 97,000 acres. it's now 89% contained. about a dozen homes have been destroyed. extra evacuation orders were lifted over the weekend. also more firefighters were sent back home including some

bay area fire crews. the state of california now the first state in the nation to adopt requirements for colleges and universities for them to follow when they investigate reports of sexual assaults. governor brown signed the yes means yes bill into law yesterday. what it states is that silence and a lack of rance don't signify content. also drugs or alcohol do not excuse unwanted sexual activity. critics of this believe the law is overreaching and creepates confusion for -- creates confusion for investigators. happening today, labor talks resume between union leaders and management in the golden gate transit district. on friday, their ongoing contract dispute led to a one- day strike by ferry captains, which we covered here on ktvu, forcing some 9,000 riders to find another way to get between marin county and san francisco. a dozen bus drivers called in sick disrupting service from

mill valley to san francisco. the two sides still appear far apart on the main issues of salary and health benefits. 7:36. new this morning, a brazen break-in in san francisco caught on camera. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now. you are at the electric bicycle superstore in fillmore with surveillance video showing those burglars in action. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. the shop owner is pretty upset. this was absolutely brazen and you can see behind me here there is shattered -- this whole glass is missing and the glass is spilled over on the sidewalk. this surveillance video shows the burglary in full swing. you can see two burglars come into frame and smash the window and grab two bikes. now the shop owner tells ktvu that after the initial burglary a passerby thinks he saw a crime of opportunity and stole a third bike. the shop owner said three bikes

were stolen valuing at $9300 and joining me is len rogers he's the shop owner. a horrible way to wake up on your monday. this happened around 4:30 a.m.? >> yes, i got a call from my alarm company at 4:30 saying there is an alarm at my store. i found out that the windows were smashed and the bikes were hissing. >> his -- were missing. >> reporter: how does it make you feel? >> it's very disappointing. but it's a small setback. we'll keep moving forward. i was awarded a business of the year award for being one of the best small businesses in san francisco and shaping the city's future back on june 10th. it won't be a huge setback. it's definitely something that i wasn't anticipating and something that's not good for business. especially since this area has a reputation for being transitional and this doesn't help us at all.

>> thank you for joining us, len. you will have quite a bit of cleanup to do. >> yes. >> reporter: coming up in a little bit, wouldary going to show -- we're going to show you some. description that we have on the suspects that hopefully could lead to a capture helping police out in this case. we're live in the fillmore district in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara. 7:38. a san leandro elementary school that was sprayed for fleas over the weekend, it's expected to reopen in time for students this morning. over the weekend, the entire campus of roosevelt elementary was closed so it could be sprayed for fleas and other insects. students have been complaining about fleabites. school leaders say it's likely other campuses may be facing the same problem. the school district says it's checking to see if other schools will need to be sprayed as well. meantime, classes are being held in san francisco state university's science building. it was shut down for several months. the san francisco examiner reports the school closed that

building to the public back in january after finding lead, asbestos and mercury. the school is trying to raise money to build a new facility to replace that old building. 10,000 students were forced to take classes in conferences, computer labs and trainers during the -- trailers during this. a suspicious device left behind in an east bay apt that -- apartment that caused a big scare. we're still looking at a lot of slow traffic for the east bay today especially on parts of the east bay near the center of it like the san mateo bridge, 880 and 580 are all very slow. we'll tell you more about this coming up. just stepped outside, it's gray and kind of cool here at

police in central, california are looking for the suspects they say triggered a crash that almost killed a woman and her two young sons. it happened yesterday afternoon in clovis north of fresno. police say a man in a truck was robbed and shot. they say he was trying to get pay way when he lost control and crashed into a home. thanks to the help of two men who witnessed the crash, the woman and the kids in that homemade it out safely.

the truck driver is still recovering. there are still problems at airports across the country after a fire at chicago airport on friday. pam cook has more. >> right now, it looks like only a few cancellations at sfo this morning. that's the good news. the airlines are still trying to get back on schedule in general today after thousands of flights were canceled or delayed because of an act of sabotage and fire near chicago. at last report, about 300 flights still canceled today at chicago's o'hare, about 100 flights are delayed there. the good news there is after being closed for some time nearby midway airport is reporting no cancellations this morning. flights there are running about 40 minutes late. now, that is still having a pretty big ripple effect across the country. >> stayed in the airport because -- we seen a couple of people trying to pay hotels. they want $350, $375 a night.

time into san francisco. it's 8:01. back to the he desk -- back to the desk. people living near pittsburg high school were forced to take a shelter inside their homes last night because of a bomb scare. alex savidge is live in pittsburg with more on the suspicious item that brought in the bomb squad. good morning, ail length. >> -- alex. >> reporter: police are searching for the man who recently moved out of an apartment where the suspicious item was found. it was clearly meant to look like a bomb t was several road flares with rifle shells on the outside. the bomb squad detonated that device on the lawn. the school is just across the street from the apartment where the item was found. the man who police are looking for was recently evicted from that unit according to his landlord and cleanup crews who were in there going through some of the belongings left behind discovered the object in the unit at around 9:30 last night. this building is on the 1500

block of summer street very close to pittsburg high. people living nearby were ordered to stay inside their homes as the walnut creek bomb squad moved in, it used a robot to get a closer look at what authorities first believed to be an explosive device and the bomb squad decided no the to take any chances -- not to take any chances. [sound of explosion] >> reporter: that was the dramatic scene as the item was des nateed and the situation -- detonate and the situation brought under control. the landlord believes his former tenant likely left behind those wrapped up road flares trying to cause a panic. police tell me that device was potentially dangerous. investigators at this point are not identifying that former tenant who may have prompted this bomb scare last night. but investigators are working to track him down and question him about why the item was left behind in the unit. we're live this morning in pittsburg, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right.

8:03. happening today, san francisco police will hold a community meeting at noon today. they are gonna talk about last week's chase that ended in a deadly police shooting in the financial district. police say it all started when a man carjacked a woman in richmond early thursday morning. he led police on a chice over the richmond/san rafael bridge across the golden gate bridge and crashed at california and battery streets. police say good samaritans tried to help the man get out of the wreckage and he fired a shot at them. officers say they opened fire when he refused to drop the-- the gun. today's meeting is at pier one along the embarcadero. a concord family is describing a terrifying ordeal after a suspected drunk driver plowed into the backyard of their home. it happened early yesterday morning on busy concord boulevard while the family was sound asleep. investigators say the dui suspect was driving at more than 100 miles an hour when he plowed into a fence and spun out in the family's backyard.

new court date will be scheduled until and unless charges are filed. in the meantime, ray mcdonald is still playing for the 49ers. some california water districts are looking at what they call water budgets. under the plan, local agencies would set the daily water usage for each household in their district. people using 0 more than their allotted water budget would be charged extra. several water districts in southern california are already working on water budgets. the state waterboard says it won't likely make this a statewide plan but it encourages districts to set higher rates for people who use more money. the drought is having a major impact on california's crops. according to the sacramento bee, the water shortage has led to smaller rice, orange and pistachio crops. grape and almond production is anticipated to be smaller than usual. experts say about 420,000 acres of farmland in california has

marathon bombing suspect accused of lying to police investigating the bombing. he's charged with making false statements when he was questioned three days after the bombings and just hours after the fbi released these photos of the brothers as suspects in the attack that killed three people and injured 260 others. the prosecutors say the man lied about being in the suspect's dorm room while two other friends removed laptops and backpacks containing evidence. the sentencing retrial for jodi arias is starting today in phoenix. last year, jurors found her guilty of murder. but jurors deadlocked over whether she should be put to death. she was convicted of filling her boyfriend in 2008. prosecutors say she stabbed him 29 times and shot him in the face. this morning the court will start the process in choosing new jurors to determine her

punishment. seven people were arrested during a protest in ferguson, missouri. police continue to search for the man who shot an officer in the arm the night before. police say the officer was on patrol when he saw a man hanging around a community center. when the officer went to ask the man what he was doing, the man ran away. when the officer chased him, the man opened fire. police say at the time of the shooting, there were two protests taking place but police don't believe the events are connected. the protests have been happening since the deadly police shooting of 18-year-old michael brown last month. 8:16. happening today -- the u.s. supreme court will consider taking up same-sex marriage cases from five states. now, the court is due to hold a private conference on the cases from utah, oklahoma, virginia, indiana and wisconsin. now, the court could decide to hear one or more of the cases this winter or deny or delay them. same-sex marriage is legal in 19 states including here in

california and the district of columbia. well, back here at home, it seems like the 49ers still haven't figured out how to quickly get cars out of the stadium parking lot following a game at the new levi stadium. yesterday, 70,000 people packed levi stadium. however, the mood of the fans -- they were happy at first, it quickly changed once they got into their cars to get home. this is what it was like out there as frustrated and confused fans got stuck in big traffic jams just trying to get out of levi stadium. >> it seems like everyone is really frustrated. the traffic flow doesn't seem to be that great and everyone is just yelling at each other. >> this is ridiculous. we pay so much money, season ticketholder to come to the game anyway. way worse than candlestick. >> yikes. well, the 49ers say they are doing everything possible to deal with these traffic

problems at levi stadium. at the same time, the 49ers are still urging fans carpool or use public transportation on game day. well, hopefully they will get it straightened out. 8:17. want to check in with sal. see how things are looking on the east shore. that's been a problem. >> it has been. it's very slow speaking of traffic jams. 80 westbound. we had a couple of earlier problems. usually an yerl i problem on the eastshore freeway means a lot of slow traffic later on. 45 minutes to drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. if you are driving -- the average speed will be 26 miles an hour. when you get to the bullpen toll plaza, it's backed up for about a 40-minute drive into san francisco. maybe a little less but not much. if you are in the cash lanes. and the south bay, we've had a lot of slow traffic, too. a lot of fender-benders in the south bay. they've been pulled off to the side. but for the most part, 101, 85 and 280 are still very slow.

we call it thick for spots. sunny today. inland temperatures, about 70s, low 80s. 70s near the water. here's sal. >> right now, we still have a lot of slow traffic and in some areas it's improving but we've also added slow. this is a look at the toll plaza. it's a 25, 30-minute delay. 880 that ramp is not looking good. speaking of 880. northbound 880 is getting slower as you pat the coliseum. you will see a little bit of slowing especially after high street driving up to downtown oakland. in san jose, we have had just a bunch of little fender-benders and traffic is slow. even if the crashes weren't big ones, it caused enough slow traffic to set you behind on this accident. i want to go back here to this freeway, 80 westbound. still 42 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. now, let's go back to the desk. 8:32. new this morning, a brazen san francisco break-in and it was

caught on camera. tara moriarty joining us live now at the electric bicycle superstore. you are right on fillmore street. there is a surveillance video that shows these burglars in action. >> reporter: good morning. that's pretty clear video. we'll show you that in a second. behind me you can see there was once a window here. there was glass all over the sidewalk. crews were able to clean it up. now they are getting read yesterday to board it up -- reabdy to board it up. you can see around 4:30, two burglars smash the window and grab two bikes. the shop owner says after the initial burglary, a passerby saw a crime of student and stole a third bike. it is just a small setback, he says. >> i was awarded a small business of the year award for being one of the best small businesses in san francisco and shaping the city's future back on june 10th. it won't be a huge setback. but it is definitely something i wasn't anticipating and something that's not good for

they were arrested early yesterday morning. they are suspected of starting eight fires in a seven-plok area in just a couple of hours yesterday morning. firefighters say garbage cans, dumpsters and cars were set on fire. in some of the cases, the flames spread to nearby buildings. four families were displaced by the fires and three businesses were either damaged or destroyed. >> i thought it was an accident. never thought of such a thing to burn a house. come on. >> now, petersen and gutierrez are both due in court tomorrow afternoon. gutierrez is being held on $1 million bail. petersen is being held on $750,000 bail. a $15,000 reward is being offered for information on two shootings in west oakland that sent four people to the hospital. both shootings were reported just before midnight on saturday. in one, a 16-year-old was shot

while riding in a car with his friend on market street when they heard gunshots. the teen then realized he was shot in the leg. the other shooting, three people were at a party at martin luther king, junior way and 32nd when shots were fired. all tleel men were hurt -- three men were hurt. no arrests have been made. later today, we'll learn more about the federal money from washington, d.c. that will be used to help fight crime in oakland. oakland has received $1.8 million federal grant that will allow the city to hire 15 more police officers. city leaders say the new officers will provide the latest boost in their battle against violent crime. oakland is on track to have its lowest homicide rate since 1999. oakland mayor jean quan and barbara lee will reveal more about the federal grant during a news conference today. california is the first state in the nation to atonight requirements for colleges and

forcing changes at an east bay hiking trail. the changes are not too popular for some. new hours at mission peak went into effect, surprising many early-morning hikers. janine de la vega is live in fremont with more on the reason behind the change. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. there's been a steady stream of people coming in here to mission peak preserve and hiking on the trail. now, we're told this has become so popular that at the top, there's usually a line of people waiting to take a picture, a selfie so that they can post it on social media. all of the congestion has finally prompted park officials to restrict the hours here. people started showing up here at mission peak regional reserve at 5:00 a.m. that's when the park used to open. they were surprised to find a sign notifying visitors of the change in hours. this they now have to wait -- they now have to wait until 6:30 a.m. there's only 42 parking spots at the entrance but on the weekend, more than 300 vehicles

are parked in the surrounding neighborhoods. mission peak has become increasingly popular to hike for its sweeping view of the bay. people have been taking selfies at the top and hanging onto a pole there. park officials say the heavy foot traffic is causing severe trail degradation and soil erosion. some visitors are taking short cuts and ruining the line. >> it's overcongestion. people are -- granted, everybody want the same thing. it's a good preserve. if we overuse it beyond the capacity, it will be lost. >> the hike is three miles and there's no water or rest spots and paramedics are often called for medical emergencies because people are unprepared. the district wants to make sure people stay say and they want to protect the trail. the park closes a lot earlier

today. hard to believe it's still causing problems. >> that fire on friday at that traffic control center near chicago o'hare airport still causing delayses and cancellations. it is better than the weekend. right now, sfo is experiencing flight delays for incoming flights. but we understand that's mostly because of the cloudy weather. about 300 flights are canceled today at chicago's o'hare. about 100 flights are still delayed. the other good news is after being closed for some time, nearby midway airport is reporting no cancellations this morning. but flights there are running about 40 minutes late. it's a very big improvement from the thousands of flights canceled across the country over the weekend. >> the faa has made a full-time commitment to this. the employees are on 24-hour shifts to move into this as quickly as possible. and they are hoping by the end of the week to be back into normal operations.

after the international combat mission ends december 31st. back here at home, new recommendations from the american academy of pediatrics about birth control for teenaged girls. the updated policy says teenaged girls who are sexually active should use iuds or hormonal implants instead of birth control pills. the organization says the new recommendations are better because they are long acting and girls don't have to remember to use it every day. it also says iuds are cheaper over the long run. a new list is out for the best colleges to attend in california. the bay area made the top of the list. sanford university was ranked the top college in california and the 7th best college in the nation according to college factual. coming in second was the california institute of technology usc was ranked fourth and uc berkeley came in 8th and was named one of the
