now at noon -- two men now headed to court accused of setting several fires around the city of alameda as we learn more about their arrest. the search is underway for burglars caught on camera breaking into a bike store and making off with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. what happened after the initial break-in that the shop owner calls a crime of opportunity. plus -- disappointed hikers this morning after showing up to a popular east bay park and learning about big changes. why officials say the park is becoming too popular for its own good.

good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we have now learned the identity the two men arrested in a series of arsons that damaged and destroyed homes and businesses in alameda. ktvu's brian flores just spoke with alameda police and joins us live. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon to you. yeah, police are currently tightening up the case before two men are officially charged from the damage that they caused yesterday, not only did they cause damage to this business and home but six other places early yesterday morning. want to go to the pictures of the two men alameda police arrested. they've been identified as 27- year-old steven petersen of alameda and a transient identify fid as andrew gutierrez. they were arrested on suspicion of starting at least seven fires in alameda early sunday morning. originally, they said there were eight fires. but this morning they say one of those fires was unrelated to the arson investigation. police say the fires damaged or

destroyed five damages and businesses and placed families -- displaced families as well. they couldn't say what the motive was but say both were arrested in close proximity to one another near one. fire's location. >> if we've gotten an arson investigation in the past, it's been a single location. i've been here 17 and a half years, i can't recall -- there might have been a dumbster fire maybe kids set a trash can on fire but nothing to this magnitude. >> reporter: several resources from berkeley and oakland were brought in to help fight the fires and investigate their cause. investigators will be looking at several pieces of evidence, including surveillance video from jim's coffee shop in alameda. his business was spared but dry cleaners and a home behind it were not so lucky with the residents there barely escaping. >> when i got here, it was a war zone. there were -- maybe 10 fire trucks. 50, 60 firemen. they were fighting the fire on

all four fronts. they did a great job. >> reporter: the owners of the coffee shop say the only damage to their business was at an office as fire crews had to punch through the ceiling to better attack the flames. they want people to know their business is open this morning. a lot of people at this restaurant, a lot of residents were concerned it was closed. they believe the fire may have been closed down. an drup gutierrez is held on $1 million. petersen, $750,000 bail. in the meantime, allie rasmus will have more on this story at 5:00 and 6:00 on the cute news. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. the fires in alameda happened two days after five suspicious fires in east oakland. early friday morning, a house, a warehouse, a car, and a pile of debris were all set on fire. so far there's no word of arrests for the oakland fires.

police have not said if the same people arrested for the alameda fires may be connected to the fires set in oakland. an antioch child is in the hospital with a traumatic injury this noontime after an incident on a school campus. it happened just before 9:30 this morning at parks middle school on spartan way. according to the fire department, the child suffered traumatic injuries when he collided with another student on campus. because of the fog in the area, the child could not be airlifted. he was taken by ambulance to uc davis in sacramento due to the seriousness of his injury. happening now -- san francisco police are holding a community meeting at pier 1 on the embarcadero to discuss last week's police chase and deadly shooting. police say it all started early thursday morning when the man carjacked a woman in richmond and led police on a chase over two bay area bridges. he then crashed in san francisco's finance am district where he opened -- finance

financial district where he opened fire on two good samaritans who tried to help him. police shot him. the burglary suspect was from san rafael. a pair of burglars target a bicycle shop in san francisco early this morning. it's all caught on video. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from the western edition where she tells us what clues police have to go on. >> reporter: good afternoon. the surveillance captured quite a bit of details so police will have a good idea of who they are looking at. the shop owner is getting ready to board up the window which the thieves smashed in order to get inside. surveillance shows two thieves shattering the window and then walking inside the shop snatching two bikes. a minute later, a third person sees the crime of opportunity, steals a bike, too. >> i got a call from my alarm company from 4:30 saying there is an alarm going off at the store. >> reporter: the owner says two

electrical bikes and one regular bike were stolen, a cost of $9300. the first thief is described as white, under 6 feet tall, about 150 pounds wearing a dark baseball cap, dark jacket and pants. the second is white with shoulder length brown hair, a black hat, trench coat and white wing tip shoes. the last guy is harder to make out. >> this is called an rf key, you have to use it and wand it over the screen. it turns the bike on. one of the bikes is useless without a key, without the electronic key. there's nothing -- you can't even hot wire it. there's nothing they can do with it other than sell it for parts. >> reporter: he received an april ward from mayor ed lee and he's said he's ready to move on. >> it won't be a setback. it won't something i was -- it wasn't something i was

anticipating. >> reporter: he says he's rethinking about how to do the window so it's not so tempting for thieves. he says he's received tips about who the long-haired thief can be and he's passed that information along to police. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. pittsburg police are searching for a man wanted in connection with a bomb scare that forced people to take shelter in their homes late last night. it all started around 9:30 when a suspicious device was found inside a vacant apartment on somer street, close to pittsburg high school. the landlord says it was likely left behind by the former tenant who was recently evicted. police say the item turned out to be road flares wrapped together with rifle shells. [explosion] >> the device was detonated on the lawn of pittsburg high school and police say it had the potential to injure people. investigators are now searching for the man who recently moved out of the apartment where the device was found.

lots of hikers were dispointed this -- disappointed when they arrived at a park to find the hours it's opened to the public has changed. janine de la vega tells us why the park has basically become too popular for its own good. >> reporter: before 5:00 a.m. this morning when it was still pitch black, the headlights started to show up in this parking lot for the mission peak region am preserve -- regional preserve. hikers were stopped with these signs saying it was closed. >> you come out here. you want to see the sunrise. that's not really an option at this at this point -- at this point. >> reporter: instead of closing at 10:00 p.m., it closes at 7:30. some visitors have been ignoring the marked trail and taking shortcuts, damaging the land. >> it's way more crowded and i came here a few months ago and i -- they put fences up. >> reporter: the view from the bay area attracts people here and to prove they made it

hikers are taking selfies and posting them on social media but the popularity is creating a traffic jam in the neighborhood below. the stanford avenue lot has 42 spots but on the weekend, park officials say 300 vehicles are parked in the surrounding neighborhood. >> congestion is overcongestion. if we so overuse it beyond capacity, it will be lost. >> reporter: the trail is three miles long. it's steep with no water or rest stops. emergency crews are often called to treat dehigh traited or injured workers. the park district wants people to use the trail entrance at alony college. the sign says anyone who violates the new hours can be cited. fines can cost $300 or more. reporting from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. costs are soaring for the

dismantling of the old bay bridge eastern span because of some stubborn birds. hundreds of federally protected birds are nesting on the structure. consultants have counted 0 more than 500 comments and the population is growing. the bird problem could add up to $33 million costs include already installed bird platforms on the new span nets over parts of the old span and a proposed fast track span to get the bridge dismantled before spring nesting season. california is now the first state in the country to implement requirements for investigating reports of sexual assault at colleges and universities. what the landmark bill entails. it's a little cloudy over parts of the bay area. but a big warmup is on the way. ktvu's rosemary orozco will be here to tell you how hot it

oakland raiders' season is off to a pretty horrible start. now dennis alan's job is in question. they lost do the toll fins over the weekend. they lost ten straight games dating back to last year. after the game in london, coach alan said he's not worried about his job security. the team's record is fueling speculation about his fate. last night, an associated press reporter even tweeted but then promptly deleted an item saying he had been fired. the raiders are set to speak with the media tomorrow. as for the 49ers, a new report claims if the 49ers' lineman ray mcdonald is charged with domestic violence, the team is prepared to discipline him. espn cites sources saying he could possibly be suspended or lose his contract altogether. the alleged domestic abuse involved his pregnant fiancee. but so far, no charges have

been filed. mcdonald was scheduled to be in court but the hearing was postponed and no new court date is scheduled unless charges are filed. california is the first state in the nation to adopt requirements for colleges and universities when investigating reports of sexual assaults. governor brown signed the yes means yes legislation into law yesterday. the bill states that silence and a lack of resist tans do not excuse. critics say the law overreaches and creates confusion for investigators. a new admission from president obama regarding the fight against isis is infuriating some republicans. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. bureau, it comes as the u.s. expands airstrikes in sirah close to another country's border. >> reporter: president obama said on "60 minutes" that

intelligence leaders admit they underestimated what isis was doing in syria but overestimated the will and ability of our allies, the iraqi army, to fight. republicans say that's not the case. >> we predicted this and watched this. it was like watching a train wreck and warning every step of the way this was happening. >> reporter: the u.s. expanded airstrikes in northern and eastern syria. they hit the entrance to a gas plant controlled by isis. again, the pentagon is trying to make a dent in how much money isis makes off oil and gas facilities. plus a new cnn pom out this morning show -- poll out this morning shows 73% of americans support these these airstrikes. the same poll shows 60% are against sending u.s. combat troops to fight isis. in washington, i'm kyla campbell, back to you. a hearing is scheduled for later today in the case against east palo alto gang members arrested after an 18-month investigate. it was called "operation sunny

day." 16 people were arrested for violent crimes, including an armed robbery of a jewelry store, a gun battle on highway 101 and murder. today prosecutors are expected to request that grand jury transcripts be unsealed for perjury charges in the case. there are still flight delays and cancellations due to the fire on friday at an air traffic control center near chicago. about 300 flights are canceled today and 100 more are delayed out of chicago's o'hare international airport. sfo and oakland flights do not appear to be affected. that's an improvement from over the weekend when thousands of flights were canceled across the country. it all started fry after a contract worker allegedly set a fire at the air traffic controller center in aurora, illinois. u.s. senator durbin is calling for an faa investigation. >> the faa has made a full-time commitment to this. the employees are on 24-hour

shifts to move into this as quickly as possible. and they are hoping by the end of the week to be back into normal operations. >> the faa said it will be at least two more weeks before all repairs are done and the air traffic facility is back to full capacity. cooler, wet weather over the weekend is helping firefighters battle the king fire in el dorado county. it's burned more than 97,000 acres and is 89% contained. a dozen homes have been destroyed. extra orders were lifted as more firefighters were sent home, including some bay area fire crews. so some california water districts are looking at what they call water budgets to set a usage for each household. under the plan, people using more than their allotted water budget would be charged extra. several water districts in southern california are already working on water budgets. the state waterboard says it will not likely make this a statewide plan but it

encourages districts to set higher rates for people who use more water. the drought is having a major impact on california's crops. as expected, the water shortage is already leading to smaller rice, orange and pistachio harvests. experts say about 420,000 acres of farmland in california have fon unplanted this -- have gone unplanted this year because of the dry. farmers fear another dry year could mean billions of dollars in losses. mild fall weather in store for your monday. outside the doors, the low clouds persist for some. giving you a live look over the bay area, we're seeing a few breaks n clouds. but they widespread inside the bay, along the coat into the north bay. along the coast, i think it will stick for most of the day. we'll be partly to mostly cloudy along the coast line. but inside the bay our bayside
