south bay police have released this scratch of a man they say is behind a recent spike in home burglaries in one neighborhood. a new development in the ambulance shortage problem. how the latest case is tied to the may arewife. and another raiders' head coach is out and we just learned who is set to be named interim head coach. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. after two full seasons with the raiders, dennis allen is out.

ktvu's sal castanedo just spoke with someone who is set to replace him as interim coach and sal joins us from raiders headquarters. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. the interim head coach is gonna be 52-year-old tony sparano, who was the offensive line coach. he was also the assistant head coach of the team. he was head coach for miami for three years. there is a picture of him here. now, even though it was expected that dennis allen was going to be fired, this is drawing national attention to the raiders but probably not the way the team wanted. analysts say dennis allen was already on the hot speed before the season even began. after last see's 4-12 record. when the raiders lost in a blowout this sunday against the dolphins, speculation began of allen's imminent release. now it's official. dennis allen is out and the raiders will announce an interim replacement this afternoon. >> he did the right thing. i think it was needed. >> reporter: allen was 8-28

with the team. some fans are wondering if reggie mckenzie is next to go. many have questioned him. still, the the head coach usually the one to take the fall after losing seasons. since 2000, the raiders have had eight coaches from jon gruden to dennis ail en. several question why the team doesn't stick with coaches longer. >> every two years they get another head coach and when they had a head coach that got him to, like the halfway point, the threshold, they got rid of him. >> i didn't understand why they got rid of hugh jackson in one year. they kept allen. >> i said bring chuckky back. time for him to come back home. >> reporter: so chuckkiy is -- chuckky is a reference to john gruden. who many say looked like him

from the films. it will be tony sparano. the raiders will have a press conference this afternoon at 2:00 with reggie mckenzie to make the official announcement. they've already put out a statement saying it will be spara in. 0. to take over for the rest -- sparano to take over for the rest of the year. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. police are warning about a rash of break-ins in the southern part of the city. the area has been experiencing a spike in burglaries. officers are hoping you can help. janine de la vega joins us live with a police sketch and will tell us about the activity there. >> reporter: we're here off middlefield road. a home here was burglarized last week. police think the same suspect may be responsible for several break-ins that have occurred this month. palo alto police want you to take a good look at this police sketch of the peculiarry suspect who broke into a home

on september 24th a witness observed him exiting a home in the 3000 block of kelper and then getting into a wait car -- a waiting car. police say the thieves may be casing the neighborhoods suths of oregon expressway and along the corridor and watching to leave who leaves their home and stays. the burglaries are occurring between 8:00 and 11:00 in the morning. >> we have seen a spike in that particular area of town. they seem to be surrounding those blocks and recently, i know for a fact that we've had one or two a day at some -- at some point occurring in that part of our town. >> i'm gonna keep a closer lookout on the neighborhood because i'm around during the day. and see if i see anybody suspicious and i will discuss with my wife. maybe there's other measures we can take to protect our home. >> reporter: in most cases, the burglar is accessing the home

by entering law unlocked side gates. people are taring people to -- are are advising people to lock their gates. so far this year, there's been 98. last year, there were 108 burglaries to date. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. new details in a decade's old cold case murder. the district attorney aoffice said today it's -- district attorney's office said it's dropping the case filed against cathy zimmerman's husband and brother-in-law. in 1980 her body was found strangled in a car covered up in a distinctive quilt. the decision comes after news surfaced that the prosecutor handling the case had an affair with a criminalist who testified about evidence found at the scene. prosecutors say they will

reassess the case. there is now a new twist in the ongoing dilemma involving san francisco's ambulance shortage. as tara moriarty reports, just yesterday, the mayor's wife was involved in an accident and waited longer than she should have for an ambulance to arrive. >> reporter: the mayor is saying that both he and his wife believe she did receive the appropriate level of care after her accident. ktvu also spoke with chief joanne hayes-white who says the ambulances did arrive on time but the dispatch report paints a much different picture. let's take a look at some pictures that we have from the scene on mangles avenue in the sunnyside district where a driver crashed into a parked truck shortly after 2:00 yesterday afternoon. according to multiple sources, the passengers in the wrecked car that you see was mayor ed lee's wife anita. the mayor's office says the first lady is okay. she initially had back pain, numberness and tingling. the driver was complaining of chest pains. two ambulances were called.

a code 3 call considered life- threatening. both ambulances arrived more than ten minutes later. the city mandate is less than ten minutes. the first ambulance was dispatched at 2:12 and arrived at 2:26. a wait time of 12 minutes. the second ambulance did not arrive until 2:37 a wait time of 23 minutes. that ambulance was for the driver. fire chief joanne hayes-white says the second ambulance wasn't actually called until later. in reality, it only took six minutes. she also says the first ambulance was initially dispatched as non-life- threatening. therefore, the ambulances were both on time. the mayor's office released a statement saying, both the mayor and the first lady anita lee thank the first responders for providing excellent care of mrs. lee immediately following a car accident in which she was treated and transported to san francisco general hospital. mrs. lee was treated and released from the hospital." as you know, the fire chief has been under fire for long ambulance response time, the union an employee work groups

calling for her resignation last week. in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco police officer was involved in an injury accident this morning in the city's western edition. this happened before 7:00 a.m. at webster and mcalister streets. the officer was off duty and was driving a white suv that collided with a box truck. at least two people were hurt, including the officer but it's not clear how seriously the injuries are. police at the scene told a ktvu crew that it appears the box truck ran a red light. one woman is still in critical condition after she and two others crashed their car while trying to get away from police. it happened around 8:00 last night along san pablo avenue near church lane. police say they originally tried to pull the drive eferp over for a vehicle code violation. but instead the driver took off before crashing into the center median. >> at one point it decided to accelerate and pull away from

the officer. it appears the vehicle lost control of the vehicle, hit the median and flipped the vehicle over. this all occurred in under a half a mile and just about under 20 seconds. >> after the crash, investigators realized the car was stolen, all three women were taken to the hospital. but the two others were released. this morning, california became the first state? the nation to impose a -- in the nation to impose a statewide ban on single use plastic bags. governor brown approved legislation to eliminate plastic bags at grocery storeses and -- doors and pharmacies -- stores and pharmacies. it allows stores to charge 10 cents to paper bags. the new law is meant to reduce litter and bagmakers oppose the law saying it will result in lost manufacturing jobs.

olympic swimmer michael phelps was arrested in maryland on a dui charge and for speeding. he was arrested just after 1:30 a.m. in baltimore. police say he was going 84 in a 45-mile-an-hour zone when officers stopped him. he was released after his arrest. this is phelps's second dui charge. the first happened in 2004 when he was 19. phelps is the most decorated olympian of all time with 22 olympic medals. a man is in custody after a four-hour manhunt in the south bay. we're hearing about how he was able to convince a into neighbor to let him -- convince a neighbor to let him inside a home while police searched for him. today, slightly warmer but more hot weather is on the way. rosemary will be here to pinpoint the hottest days this week? and the head of the secret service takes the hot seat in front of congress to answer questions about how an intruder managed to get so far into the white house last week. insurance companies are spending millions of dollars

a man wanted for bank credit card in a sex crime with a child is under arrest. palo alto police received a call from a bank of america

branch yesterday saying dominic tabb was attempting to make a transaction that was fraudulent. officers arrived and he ran away. police did a yard-to-yard search but there was no sign of tabb. it turns out he was inside the home of a man who found him injured and in the backyard. the homeowner said tabb said he had been jumped. the homeowner helped him and offered him dinner and a ride to a train station. after nearly four and a half hours, the officer saw tabb walking out of the house with the homeowner and arrested him. >> while we discourage anyone from staking a stranger in your house, it appears he was trying to be nice. we're very lucky nothing bad happened to the person. >> the homeowner got an alert from the county by phone but he did not think that tabb fit the description. tabb is wanted in oklahoma for sex crimes with a minor. san francisco police are

investigating an early-morning robbery and shooting near civic center plaza. it happened before 3:00 at hide an fulton streets. police say the suspect confronted a group of men forced them up against a building and took their money. before leaving, he shot one of them. that 19-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with life- threatening injuries. some scathing words for the director of the secret service as she testifies before congress today after an intruder jumped the white house fence and got deep inside the executive mansion. kyla campbell outlines the criticism from congress and reaction from the secret service. the oversight committee chairman said the fence jumper breached five rings of security to get inside the white house. julia pierson said it's clear the white house security plan was not properly executeed. >> this is unacceptable and i take full responsibility. i will make sure that it does not happen again. >> but congress wants more answers as to how a man armed

with a knife jumped the fence and sprinted 70 yards to the front door without a doing dog being released on him and without an alarm sounding. he reportedly made it inside the white house, past a stairway that leads to the family's quarters. agents stopped him in the east room. the first family had just left the white house minutes earlier and in the days following the incident administration officials praised agents for using restraint. >> tremendous restraint is not what we're looking for or the goal and objective. it sends a mixed message. the message should be overwhelming force. >> reporter: pierson said there have been six fenceuper at the white house -- fencejumpers at the white house. back to you. police are looking for a driver who hit a woman on her bike at 6:00 last night at montague expressway. police say after the woman was hit, the driver sped off.

witnesses played a major role in helping to find the car involved. >> witnesses did help providing information about the direction of the travel of the vehicle that struck the bicyclist as well as a description of the vehicle. >> about ten minutes after the crash, police located the car parked at the mall but they are still looking for the driver. the woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. happening today, the san jose city council set to consider drastically raising the fines for owners who violate the city's tough new regulations on medical marijuana dispensaries. the penalties could range from 2500 to 50,000. currently a violation costs just 25 bucks. in july, the city approved tough new rules that have forced dozens of pot clubs to close their doors. san francisco voters could have a say in the say of the wholesale flower mart. a group of vendors florists and

supporters plans to paper -- plans to file paperwork to get it on the ballot. earlier this month a majority of the san francisco flower growers association voted to sell their half of the flower part to the kilroy realty corporation. kilroy plans to build a tech campus but has promised to include flower sellers in future space. california has used up the $209 million budgeted for fighting wildfires for the seen -- season. now governor jerry brun has moved $70 million into the state's forestry and fire protection department's budget. calfire has responded to nearly 5,000 fires so far this year which is already 1200 more than average. an increase in fire danger actually coming our way. i will explain that in a

minute. let's get a look outside the stores. the clouds are scouring out. you can see a little bit of low cloud cover on the back side of san francisco. so still hugging up against the coastline. most of us enjoying partly cloudy to mostly sunny conditions. here's another view for you. we've got -- from the satellite view, you can see those clouds right there that we just showed you on the live view shot. this is going to continue for today. it will pull back a little bit more. we'll be left with partly cloudy skies from the coast around the bay and inland for the afternoon. today a minor warmup in store. by tomorrow, a significant one. so we had a system that moved through past over the north of us and it will keep temperatures on the mild side. i think today our temperatures will come up a few degrees from what we had yesterday. but as that system continues to move to the east, we'll have the ridge of high pressure build in and for the next several days we've got warm weather coming our way. we'll start by midweek wednesday, thursday and friday look to be some of the hottest days as temperatures do begin to trail off just a little bit

in time for the weekend. temperatures right now, a few degrees warmer than yesterday. 73 in fairfield. low 70s in concord. walnut creek, 68 in livermore, 64 in oakland. 63 in san francisco as well as half moon bay. head to the north bay, we have upper 60s to low 70s. 72 degrees right now in novato. so for the afternoon, 80 degrees in novato. 79 for sonoma, 79 in napa. mid-70s in sausalito. to the east bay where temperatures range in the low to mid-70s in and around the shoreline, 73 oakland. 74 san leandro and go inland, it's a nice day. it's a nice warm day. 80 degrees in danville the 80 for livermore. to the south south bay, temperatures in the 70s and 80s. 76 san jose. 77 for cupertino. along the peninsula, 77 redwood city, low 70s in san bruno. extended forecast sheer here showing you -- here showing you fairly nice. as we get into tomorrow, there tums the jump in the numbers.

thursday, friday, quite hot especially for the inland communities. mid- to upper 90s in the forecast. the offshore winds are expected to develop as early as tonight. that will drive the fire danger as well. in addition to being hot, we'll be very dry. as we get into the weekend, the temperatures will cool back. low 90s in the forecast for our inland cities. it looks like the second half will be slightly cooler down in the upper 80s for the inland communities. around the bay, 80s and along the coast we have beach weather coming. even a few 80s out there for thursday and friday. >> all right. thank you. the oakland as hours away from their matchup in the american league wild card with the royals. the pitching duel is expected to take center stage. for the as it will be jon lester and the royals will send james sheemeds -- james shields to the mound. the giants are in -- the giants

stock market is slipping

between slight gains and losses. trading hals turned choppy part of the reason is lingering concerns. corporate profits and the global economy. the dow is down a fraction. nasdaq is down 3. s&p is down 2. san jose-based ebay is parting ways with its pay pal division. the announcement was made early in morning. pay pal will become a publicly traded company sometime next year. he says the strategic review showed keeping pay pal as part of ebay beyond next year would not be as much of a business advantage as it has been in the past. there's been pressure to make pay pal a stand alone company. there's another data breach. the company that owns albertson and supervalue stores said the problems started in august.

that's when malicious software was installed on computers. the breach could affect shoppers in california and 20 other states. hackers may have taken cardholder name, account numbers and expiration dates. one of san francisco's biggest conventions of the year is underway at the moscone center. this year's oracle openworld convention comes just weeks after ceo and founder larry ellison announced he's stepping down. it's estimated 60,000 people from 145 counts are in attendance. that means a big boost for san francisco's economy. >> restaurants are full, hotels are full. but also it continues to showcase san francisco as the world's sinner of high tech innovation. last year's open world brought in $100 million to the tourist economy. ellison kicked off the conference on sunday saying 2014 is an exciting time for oracle. a weather change is ahead tonight.
