the summer today. it was hot inland and spots like walnut creek and clayton but what is unusual is it hawse hot a-- it was hot along it coast. ktvu's rob roth is at ocean beach where people are warned not to go in the water but we begin with mark tamayo. >> typically we talk about the microclimate range but that was not the case today with the fog wiped away, lots of sunshine. walnut creek near 90 degrees. look at ocean beach this afternoon, maxing out in the upper 80s. 87 degrees with fog free conditions. that was the big deal today. hot temperatures for san francisco and the coast as well. look at the highs for santa cruz, 90 degrees. ocean beach, pacifica, half moon bay, 82 degrees. right now we are in the clear, all the clouds heading to the north, the fog bank non-

existent. and you can see san francisco very warm in the upper 80s. inland neighborhoods, not talking major heat, upper 80s near 90 degrees. san jose right now 88. mountain view 88 degrees. with all the heat we have a heat advisory in place right now. that will be extended till friday. possibly into saturday as well with highs in the 80s and 90s and still working on a hot saturday forecast. we will look at the numbers and when cooling comes back. >> ktvu's rob roth is at ocean beach in san francisco. rob, it was packed there today. >> reporter: well, a lot of people are saying why can't summer be like this but here at ocean beach more and more people kept coming. if there was ever such a thing as a beach day, this was it. people left work early to spend a few hours here.

when the weather warms up people take advantage. temperatures have reached 80 degrees out here. water temperatures are 63 degrees. 5 degrees above normal. on a day like this the beach is the place to be. >> it wolf be our last days -- will be our last days. mcdonald. the protters are reviewing the case to decide -- prosecutors are reviewing the case to decide if they should press charges. police released few details other than to say a victim had injuries. woman is under arrest in connection with a deadly hit- and-run crash. the crash happened monday near great mall parkway. the resident who was struck was found in the roadway and she died the next day. police then arrested a 19-year- old of san jose. investigators say she was behind the wheel of the car that collided with the victim. she was booked into jail for felony hit-and-run. a frightening incident at a home in santa clara. a woman came face to face with a burglar armed with a knife and the situation grew violent. ktvu's tara moriarty tells us what happened when the woman's brush rushed into help.

[ indiscernible ] >> this person entered through a window. >> reporter: a woman confronted the burglar who they believe is 24-year-old, when the victim's brother heard the commotion came running and was stabbed several times. >> officers found the homeowner inside bleeding. signals so people won't have free flowing movements and the weaving that takes place here. that will be eliminated. >> transportation officials say the design at the interchange was 50 years ago. tomorrow a third off ramp will open to stevens creek boulevard. the supreme court isn't taking action on appeals asking it to take up the issue of a same-sex marriage. cases are not among cases they would here next week. they are considering state bans on same-sex marriage in indiana, oklahoma, utah, virginia and wisconsin that have been over turned. they must decide whether to hear those cases or let the rulings stand. they meet again october 10 to consider new cases. a plan on the november ballot is causing controversy in california. proposition 1 is a water bond

emergency officials joined pg&e in concord for a drill to prepare for potential disaster involving a natural gas break. it was held at the military ocean terminal. concord police, the contra costa county sheriff's department and the fire protection district were taking part. the drill simulate ad24-inch high pressure gas main break. >> we need to do this so we can find common communications, common ground, how we will work together. if you don't train, practice, then what kind of results will

you get? >> officials say today's hot weather and wind added an extra element to the emergency response. following the drill those who took part got together to review what they did well and which areas they can improve in. the dith of a new york high school football player is under investigation although officials say his death was a freak accident. the junior collided with an opponent yesterday during a game. he suffered a head injury. he was rushed to a hospital but died after surgery. the medical examiner and police are investigating. fresno county authorities made four arrests for the slaughtering of hundreds of chickens at a foster farms facility. the incident happened on september 20. authorities say the suspects broke through a fence to get inside the shed and then used a

their -- window washers stuck on their platform. people watched the rescue unfold. firefighters went to the top of the building and pulled the workers to safety. >> john sasaki spoke with the firefighter who went down to get the two men. >> reporter: window washers have little fear of heights but that doesn't mean they want to be stuck. >> if it was me i would have a heart aac-- heart attack. >> two men washing windows were trapped. >> gosh. >> the wench failed, leaving them stranded outside the 20th floor. >> we couldn't see them from the 19th floor. just the bottom of the basket but we could tell they were stuck. >> reporter: it was the fire department to the rescue. a firefighter repelled down from the roof and one by one hooked them up to a rope to pull them up to safety.

b.a.r.t. riders are facing a parking crunch, they are about to get help finding parking spots. b.a.r.t. will install more electronic signs at entrances to its garages telling the drivers whether the lot is full or not. right now they are used at two parking lots. four more are set to go up within the year. b.a.r.t. says the signs will spare drivers the hassle of driving around and around looking for space if none are available. >> the main reason i started early is the parking. that is how i started. on regulations. a food safety group is demanding the government take steps to keep consumers safe from salmonella, the center for science filed a petition calling on the usda to test all meats for specific types of salmonella. they say drug resistant salmonella causes them real concern. >> these four strains of salmonella are antibiotic resistant and that means they could cause more severe illnesses for consumers. >> the usda rejects similar petitions earlier this year and in 2011 saying salmonella is killed during cooking but the usda says it will give it a full review. there is speculation in the
