with breaking news. >> in just the past hour, firefighters in oakland managed to contain the southern fire that damaged three homes, causing problems for crews. good evening, i'm gasia mikaelian in tonight for julie main hainer. the three-alarm fire that damaged three homes in oakland. we're in the 4700 block of redding street just below interstate 580 where this fire was first reported about 7:45. and so ken, what can you tell us? >> reporter: you can see that they have about 60 firefighters on scene. take a look at this ladder

truck and follow that ladder up all the way to the top. that is the home that has burned, as they will be showing you the fire from the background, which will be hard to see, but that's where the fire started spreadly quickly as this is how they describe how fast this fire moved. >> both houses, that house was on fire, it's the second one that was kicked hard. i mean in minutes that house was up in flames. >> reporter: he had just come home from walking his dog, running into his house to pull his children out of his home. after seeing the fire spread from one house or where that fire started to two of the adjacent homes as they say it was the heat essentially from

pain -- they had the same down power line as you can see on this car as that was also draped over the oakland fire truck. they are making that truck unusable for a time. firefighters had to use their ladder truck to spray down on the fire because of the steep terrain. they had to navigate the narrow staircase, walking up four flights of stairs in all to get to the main burning structure. >> this was a very tough fire fight going up the steep hill into a structure fire. this is unusual for the firefighters to have to face it. it was like the fire packing up the hill. >> and now in that main home where the fire started where it was fully involved where firefighters arrived that there was no one in that home at this time. but there were families that were ignited by the heat from the main structure fire as they would say no homeowners would be hurt the but oakland,

channel 2 news. we learned three bay area children have tested positive for a severe respiratory virus known as enterovirus d68. health officials confirmed two cases in alameda county, a third child in solano county did not have to be hospitalized. ktvu john fowler tells us that the virus is likely more widespread than we think. >> reporter: the virus affects mostly infants to teens, spread through coughs, sneezes, or touch. >> she is just home with me. i'm not so concerned, but you know i know to look out for the signs of things like that. >> reporter: and they released few details of their new cases. >> we have two confirmed cases. those particular viruses, they seem to present similars. enterovirus is sinked to the system. she had a virus lung infection

and suddenly developed paralysis. doctors say her left arm won't recover. dr. daniel robins says that many children are exposed to the fire. >> when you put in context into the other things that you see here, this appears to be on the whole less severe. >> reporter: he says that only a handful of children become ill. those with asthma appear to be more at risk. any child with breathing problems, developing the sudden weakness should see a doctor immediately. >> it is a quirky virus. it goes back to good hand washing. >> reporter: since only severely ill children get the blood test, enterovirus is almost certainly more widespread than the reported cases would indicate. in oakland, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. the centers for disease control says it is now confirming more than 500 cases of the enterovirus strength across our country. remember it was back in august when hospitals in illinois

first noticed the first cases. but as of tonight, watch how this man extends 43 states and they have confirmed cases of the d-68 strain. they also have four deaths linked to the virus. the cdc is not releasing any information on the death, but we know that the health officials in rhode island say that the 10-year-old girl there died from the combination of enterovirus and the staph infection. coming up in 15 minutes, the ebola outbreak. who may have had contact with a man now in texas. plus, a late word today of another american that will be show symptoms in west africa. police say two sexual assaults happened last saturday night. and that the third assault happened earlier that same day. all of this comes on the heels of the federal investigation into the handling of sexual assault on college campuses

including up berk lie. earlier this week, they sign add bill calling yes, means yes. requiring explicit concerns for them. >> but they have completed their investigation into the domestic violence incident involving the 49-year-old lineman ray mcdonald who they have now handed the case over to the prosecutors. the district attorney's office, they plan to review the case, then decide whether to file criminal charges or seek more information. and the case stems from his arrest over the labor day weekend for felony domestic violence. police have not released any specific details except to say that the female involved hasinjuries. the annual fundraiser, there was a cocktail partisan auction as they would feel hope -- they would hope to raise at least $74,000. it's the largest provider as they help women, teen, children

break the cycle of violence as we asked the executive director about recent incidents involving the nfl players. >> it shines a light on the issue. and while that is unfortunate at the same time it provides a great opportunity for us to really engage in a discussion about domestic violence. more than 20,000 people in san franciscoer year. there is new information tonight about the hacker attack involving the nation's largest bank, which is much more larger than expected. j.p. morgan chase say more than 60 million household accounts were accessed. initially the bank put the estimate at only one million accounts. details of the breach were disclosed in a security filing today. the hacker attack is one of the largest ever and it is being blamed on how they operating

lot of people to san francisco. and their ocean beach, but as rob ross tells us even though it was hot, beach patrol warned them to stay out of the water. >> reporter: here in ocean beach surfers road the waves. >> we have a lot of dangerous rip currents out there. >> reporter: warning people not to go into the water that it is too early to be a swimming beach. some people, they would heave the advice as others can. >> if you know what you are doing, you can get away. >> reporter: it was here just last week that a father and son visiting from the central valley were overcomed by waves and drowned. the same day that the beach patrol made two other rescues. >> anyone who doesn't come prepared to be in the water. that we will try to approach them before they have gone in that water to warn them not to go in. >> and they warn about the notorious rip current that made

however a stray bullet hit watkins and killed him. but the night wasn't about watkins death, but a celebration of his life. >> he was an amazing guy. he made sure to practice all week, so he would be there every saturday and sunday cheering with her. >> he's the loudest one on the

helmets with watkins initial on it for the rest of the season. but right now they don't have any suspect information. i'm paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. he was remembered as a true visionary and a credit to police officers everywhere. hundreds gathered in san jose for a public memorial honoring him. he died last month of pancreatic cancer. the former chiefs of the department were among those who spoke of the lasting impact that he made when he took command in 1976. >> set out to the community that someone was considering a crisis as he engaged in the community leadership in a way that no police professional would have anywhere today. truly that was the beginning of the community policing. >> reporter: and his daughter remembered her father as the avid reader and writer and a passionate sports fan.

they served as chief for 15 years after the retirement in 1951. >> fourteen agers are in custody of the malicious slaughtering at the foster farms facility in fresno county. the 18-year-old was the oldest of the four suspects. the others are juvenile as they broke through a fence to get inside this shed to use that golf club or something similar. deputies made the arrest yesterday after several tips, including burglary, felony charges. there is a $10,000 reward in this case. plastic bag manufactures are looking for support from california voters to overturn the new statewide banned on plastic bags. it eliminates single use practice bags at grocery stores all across the state.

health officials in texas say as many as00 people may have come in contact with a man that recently tested positive for ebola. how thomas duncan got into the united states and the fears among his neighbors. >> it is just a devastating situation for everyone. everyone period. >> reporter: are you shaken -- a shaken property manager at the complex where the man who bought the first case of ebola to the united states had been staying with family. texas health officials issued a public health or ther who live at had come doors and have any visitor so far they say that no one has shown any symptoms of the deadly illness. >> there could be additional cases who are already exposed. and if that occurs, then the

have a heart attack here. >> reporter: for more than two hours this morning, two men washing windows on the outside of the broadway were trapped. >> i thought this was it, you know, like oh gosh. >> reporter: the wench for their platform fell leaving them stranded on the 20th floor. >> we couldn't see them from the 19th floor, just the bottom of the basket, but we could tell that they were stuck. >> so it was the oakland fire department to the rescue. >> reporter: a firefighter repelled down on the roof. one by one hooking the men up to the roof to have them pulled to safety. >> of course you get a little anxiety and stress. any time there are multiple people involved that high up. >> reporter: as one of the window washers were being pulled up, the attorney took this photo from the 24th floor. >> he seemed very happy to be getting out of there. >> reporter: it was nerve racking delicate work. >> we had a strong team of rescue team members and oakland firefighters on the top, hoisting us up. >> reporter: as they were pulled to the roof including

the firefighter, the crowd showed it and their appreciation. >> in my heart, which is beating for the guy, just imagine what in the world that felt like and just praying that the guy that all would go well and they could go over it. many they all survived the deal unscaved. encouraging to see the way the crowd reacted to the rescue. that it shows that the people here truly care about the safety of the window washers. in oakland, i'm john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. no more details on the dramatic rescue. it's a 24-story building, one of the tall nest downtown oakland at 360 feet. those window washers were stuck outside the 20th floor that, would be about 300 feet up. from that high firefighters had to pull them up the remaining 60 feet to the roof of the building. putting it out in the bay area. neighborhoods that usually stay cool. the updated timing on temperatures, significantly above average.

authorities in vallejo are investigating tonight after a body was found in a burned out garage. the fire broke out around 2:00 this afternoon in a vacant lot at florida and alameda streets. the flames quickly took over the building. after putting out the fire is when the body was found. so far it's not known how that person died, but vallejo police, the fire department, and the sew la know county arson task force are all investigating. it happened on monday near the

express way. she died the next day as police have arrested the 19-year-old of san jose saying she was behind the wheel of the gold prius that hit the victim. the high school student was arrested for bringing a glowing gun to school. the campus security guard spotted two students acting suspiciously. that student was arrested, the other was let go. new tonights tonight in the protest in hong kong. members have gathered around the chief executive building, demanding that he step down, but he refused with a -- as he
