now at noon, crews are working to replace 50-year-old water main pipe after it burst and flooded a san francisco neighborhood. we'll show you how much damage it caused. a heat advisory and spare the air day in effect right now. we'll tell you just how hot it's going to get and when the fog is expected to roll back in. plus one person shot and robbed. another robbed and beaten at a popular walking trail. now police are searching for the two suspects.

good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a massive water main break this morning sent millions of gallons of water gushing down city streets. ktvu's tara mryarti joins us live with the repair work underway. good afternoon. >> reporter: it has been 12 hours since this pipe burst. right now crews have been able to get the cracked pipe up out of the ground. it's sitting on the back of that truck you see over there. then the brand new pipe is to the left right there. they're getting ready to put that in the ground. neighbors around here have not gotten much sleep. it gushed for four hours. the force of the water so great it tore the bumper off this car. >> this is crazy. >> yes, it is. unbelievable. never seen nothing quite like it before. >> reporter: it flowed for two and a half blocks. leaving a trail of mud the

length of two football fields. >> it was gushing out. the dirt and everything. >> this. >> moi goodness. >> reporter: this turned this basement into a swamp and flooded this garage, stopping before hitting douglas' house. >> we're lucky it didn't get our property. feel bad for the other two houses on the block. >> reporter: we spoke to the ffpuc at 4:20 this morning some four and a half hours after the leak. >> it's take an while to isolate the pipe. took longer than we needed. >> reporter: city officials say that the break in the 12-inch line happened at midnight when a cast iron pipe from 1953 burst. >> i think there are reports that some people need to be put up in a hotel. there may be a couple people displaced while we fix everything. >> reporter: this is cell phone video from the man who lives two blocks from key avenue and key street where the rupture happened. >> it was getting into the

houses. >> reporter: knee deep in some parts. >> yeah. >> reporter: cars also sustained damage, but many of them had been towed away by the morning. officials say it is possible that more homes were impacted. they're doing sort of a tally right now. we want to mention that between 15 and 20 homes are still without water. we are told within the next two hours they most likely will have water restored. live from san francisco's bay view district. >> thank you. the heat advisory still in effect today as well as a spare the air day. this does not necessarily mean the blistering hot record temperatures in the bilander areas. it's all about the hot weather at the coast. >> it's still warm to hot inland. they're used to that. coast and the bay is not. temperatures in parts of san francisco are in the mid80s. it's warming up really fast. some locations down to santa cruz just tweeted out. natural bridges is 80.

natural point, 82. 90s for many, including san francisco. 91 officially. the record is 97. 1985. a teeny bit of fog out there. some of the temperatures. it's way out there. santa rosa is 85. livermore is 89. san francisco is already 84. look at half moon bay. almost 80 degrees. san jose, 82. other areas to the north, we did have a few 40s for lows this morning. we're getting temperatures -- i think sabastipol was 49 this morning. look at brentwood, only 80. that may be old. 70s for some. 80s for others. there's very warm air aloft. east san jose says 90 degrees. los gatos at 91. menlo park at 84. it's warm, it's hot. we'll see how long this lasts and if there's relief coming up. >> thank you, steve. with the heat at the coast, it's expected to be another

busy day at san francisco's ocean beach. while it may seem tempting to cool off in the water, beach patrol is advising people to stay out. the park services ocean beach has strong rip currents. it can be a matter of life and death. >> the most common cause of swimmer distress is someone who thought they would just go into their knees, they get knocked down by a wave and pulled out by a rip current. >> a father and son were overcome by rip currents and drowned. anyone who does not have a surfboard or wet suit will be advised to stay out of the water. it's quite hot at the free music festival in golden gate, which just kicked off a few hours ago. you can see from news chopper it people have claimed their spots. brian flores is joining us live

as the festival gets underway. good afternoon. >> reporter: we claimed our spot as well. yeah, several thousands of people expected to be here at golden gate park. many of them making their way into the festival as we speak for the hardly strictly bluegrass festival. people making their way through here. expect a lot of traffic. a lot of fun. also a lot of heat. ♪ >> reporter: that was a band playing to middle schoolers this morning. that is an annual tradition to do that. so is the festival which is in its 14th year. this was started by san francisco music legend. he passed away in 2011. his festival is considered a gift to the city of san francisco of all ages. several acts throughout the weekend. some of the headliners include chris isaac and emmy lou harris. we spoke with his granddaughter who is carrying on the legacy.

>> i think he'd be excited that we carried the tradition on. my favorite thing about the whole festival -- there's no sponsors. there's no advertising. it's not about selling anything or corporate america or anything. just about enjoying yourself and being out in the park and dancing to music and not caring what anybody else thinks. >> i really like it because i love music. and they have really good seats so we can see them up close. >> reporter: 750,000 people are expected throughout this weekend, meaning traffic is going to be heavy. this weekend, temperatures expected to be in the high 80s to low 90s here. medical staff here says if you are headed to the festival, be prepared. >> we have a staff of 40 to 50 folks out here. we have three separate first aid locations at the event. as well as our main medical, which is right behind me. we have water and gatorade

available. sunscreen. ♪ >> reporter: if you can't make it out here for the festival, all their acts are being streamed live on the hardly strictly bluegrass website. the event is free and for the family. this remains an alcohol free event. we're live at golden gate park in san francisco. there was a hazardous terms scare this morning that caused concern for workers. news chopper 2 flew over the facility on gally drive after hazmat team arrived. an employee was working with a valve that malfunctioned and an unknown substance sprayed on to his body. the substance turned out to be harmless. >> after further investigation it was found that the material was a neutral product. something similar to maybe a

salt water. following protocol wanted to make sure that the patient was okay. >> was evacuated until it was determined what the substance was. workers have been given the all clear to return. san jose police are looking for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run. investigators say it appears the victim was walking across center road when he was hit. a witness described the hit and run vehicle as a dark-colored suv. the victim may have been struck by other vehicles. the incident marked the city's 16th pedestrian fatality this year. law enforcement and those who help domestic violence victims are trying to come up with solutions to help survivors. this comes on the heals after san jose police department completing its investigation into ray mcdonald who was arrested for allegedly abusing his fiance. live to explain what sort of

discussion is happening at this conference. >> reporter: the case is in the hands of the district attorney's office. it'll be up to prosecutors to decide whether or not to press criminal charges against him. the chair told me that the recent cases involving the nfl has put a spotlight on domestic violence and how to handle victims. today around 350 people came together at the marriott to study what can be done better to help those in need. police officers, attorneys, judges, mental health and other providers are sharing their experiences at this annual forum on domestic violence. the focus this year is looking at abuse from a legal lens. oftentimes the system is hard to navigate and they might not want to corporate with law enforcement out of fear. >> criminal prosecution, a victim may be reluctant to be

involved. sometimes the victim doesn't feel safer by the domestic violence being in the courtroom. the victim may not feel comfortable calling 911. many times because of challenges with language access, victims don't know how to access services. >> reporter: the latest statistics show that shelters serve 617 women and children who were victims of domestic violence in the past year. those providers say they've turned away roughly 2000 people a year because there's not enough resources in the area. calls to abuse hotlines are down, i'm told, by roughly 10%. but it's unknown if that's because more cases are going unreported. reporting live from santa clara. a search is underway for two men accused of shooting and beating people after robbing them on a popular walking path. why one of the victims was unable to call for help. what crews are doing today

carried out two violent robberies near a popular walking path. alex savage explains. >> reporter: the back to back robberies happened around 8:00 last night just next to a biking and walking path that runs through el cerrito. one victim was beaten and robbed. the other was shot in the leg after refusing to cooperate with the armed robbers. and police say that gunshot made it impossible for the man to call 911. >> he also was shot through his cell phone in the leg, which is why he ran for help instead. >> reporter: an officer found the shooting victim a block away. he is expected to survive. so is the man who was assaulted. police say the two victims don't know each other. they just happened to be walking a few feet apart last night when they were both held up. investigators say the second victim seems to have interrupted the initial

robbery, which is likely why the hold up turned violent. >> we had a second victim that walked in. likely unexpected and complicated the situation for them. when things get complicated and the plan changes, then sometimes things like this happen. >> reporter: a lot of commuters use this path to get to and from the nearby el cerrito bart station. some told us what happened last night is an important reminder to stay alert. >> try to avoid maybe early or late night. also if somebody is following you you should walk -- >> i don't walk alone on the path after dark. i'll do it with my husband or a friend or something, but not alone. >> reporter: investigators are now going over video from surveillance cameras hoping it can help them track down the two teenage boys behind last night's shooting. this crime was the latest in a series of robberies along this popular pathway and police are planning to increase patrols in this area.

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. berkeley police are investigating three sexual assaults. police received two separate reports of sexual assault last saturday night. the third assault reportedly happened at fraternity earlier that same day. this comes on the heels of a federal investigation into the handling of sexual assaults on college campuses, including uc berkeley. earlier this week governor brown signed a bill requiring explicit consent between partners. police are investigating a car crash that sent four people to the hospital. it happened around 2:00 a.m. at pleasant hill road and taylor boulevard. the lexus sedan crashed into a utility pole. the outs were in their late teens and early 20s. they received minor to moderate injuries. according to police the driver may have been speeding. investigators also say it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the

almost washington. 85 fairfield. 85 santa rosa. one reading of 85 in san francisco. officially it's 81. half moon bay is probably 80 by now. livermore t 89. a bunch of temperatures pushing the upper 80s. some locations, a struggle to get there. for some it's in the 80s. for some it's also near 90 degrees. some of these are in the higher elevations. east san jose. gilroy in there. 51 this morning. the low and the high on some of these are just almost 50 degrees. foster city, 81. menlo park. north at concord. it's west now at oakland. haven't seen that for a while. they had a northeast breeze yesterday. that's why they were so warm. west at heyward. trying to break through. so i think it will by tomorrow. today it's too late. we're seeing temperatures in the 80s. take your pick.

after a few big drops this week, stocks are surging. taking a live look at the big board. the dow is up 209. the nasdaq is up 52. the s&p is up 22. the main reason for the surge today, a new labor department report that showed a burst in hiring. 248,000 new jobs were created last month. and it says hiring in august was stronger than first reported. that sent the jobless rate down to 5.9%, its lowest level in six years. jp morgan chase says 83 million customer accounts were exposed when the bank was hacked last july. originally the largest bank in the country says about a million accounts were victims of the cyber attack. contact information including names, addresses and phone numbers as well as internal jp morgan chase information about the users was compromised.

however the bank said no customer money appears to have been stolen. right now american idol super star judges are in the bay area to hold auditions and send some talented singers one step closer to making their dream come true. hundreds of singers began lining up in san francisco. started about 6:30 this morning. these singers made it through the initial auditions with producers earlier this week. they'll now show their stuff to judges. contestants say it's been stressful but also a great experience. >> it's been intense. they run you pretty ragged. but it's fun though. we're laughing, having a good time. it's been great. >> producers say they've seen at least 3000 contestants during the bay area this week.
