a young man home from college for the weekend is in jail tonight. accused of killing his mother inside their bay area home. good evening i'm ken pritchett in for ken wayne. >> and hello everyone i'm heather holmes. investigators in hayward are trying to figure out what would motivate the college student to kill his mother. rosemary bariali was found dead in her house last night. the death has underbring shocked neighbors there. we get new information tonight from ktvu's katie utehs. she's been talking to neighbors there who tell her that the son

is a student at uc berkeley. >> reporter: neighbors tell us that he is very nice. we don't know what went on inside of the home but we know it resulted in the death of a mother and possibly three dogs. >> that house is just full of love. full of family. >> reporter: elizabeth jimenez saw her friend and neighbor rosemary barieali. >> she was telling me how blessed she was with her kids. >> reporter: but by the evening bariali'sson came to her for help. >> finally he told me, he killed her. he killed her. so i started screaming. the boy came walking and stood up in front of us while the neighbor was calling the police. and then i asked him, son, why did you do that son.

he said he didn't answer back. he just looked to the heavens. put his hands together and got on his knees. when police came and arrested him. >> reporter: jimenez says joseph bari, ali stabbed his mother to death with scissors. >> when i heard the story my whole perspective of him changed. i felt i never knew the kid. >> joseph is a nice, intelligent, quiet kid. my heart goes out to him and his family. he's a good boy. he's not a troublemaker. >> reporter: while joseph awaits arraignment in jail. his family returned to the neighborhood where nobody can make sense of the killing. >> it's just shocking. because i love my mom. just to hear something like that. especially if you know the kid. you know. it just hurts. >> reporter: a mother dead and a kid in jail.

>> they were just a wonderful, wonderful family. >> reporter: joseph bariali is scheduled to be in court tuesday afternoon. live in hayward, katie utehs. two men remain in the hospital after an attack. the two member assaulted two others just before kick off inside a restroom in the 300 level of the north end of the stadium. the two victims were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. the suspects were bookedded for felony assault. police are still investigating what sparked the assault and would not tell us if they were fans of opposing teamings. there are indications tonight that governor brown is set to back a candidate in the oakland mayoral race. we called chad's office to get

me details because they were tight lipped. another pedestrian accident left a person in the hospital. the driver did stop a short distance away. and that injured pedestrian was taken to sf general. two days ago on friday a taxi driver struck a man in the marina district. that accident a man in his 20s suffered a fractured leg and injuries to his upper body but he is expected to survive. tonight police are looking for a shooter who opened fire in the hayward district. the shooting happened on harbor road near middle point road around 2:30 this afternoon. police say when officers arrived on scene they found the victim shot in the chest. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the victim's identity has not yet been released.

police say no one has been arrested. and across the bay in oakland. another homicide investigation is under way after a man was shot and killed outside a nightclub. investigators say the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out near 14th and vinyl street. at some point during the fight at least one person began shooting. three people were hit. one person was taken to the hospital where he later died. two others suffered nonlife threatening injuries and so far police have not made any arrest. a powerful typhoon near japan has left at least one u.s. airman dead and two others missing. rough seas made it difficult to find the two still missing. typhoon phan is moving toward japan's main island with winds over 100 miles per hour.

meantime another typhoon is turning toward guam. people took shelter in schools. new details of a clean up of an arsonned damaged air traffic facility. officials hope to have the damaged equipment removed by tomorrow so that they can begin the installation of new equipment. thousands of flights have been cancelled at chicago airports since then but with the help from other control centers, air traffic returned to about 95% of normal as of noon today. meantime investigators looking into a fire at the flight 93 national memorial in shanksville pennsylvania say they have found no evidence of arson. that fire destroyed three administration buildings for the memorial. several historical items were also damaged. among them the flag that flew over the capital on september

developing news from dallas where workers today continue to decontaminate the apartment of ebola patient thomas duncan. now workers say the apartment is being completely stripped from curtains to carpets with one of those workers saying he feels he's doing his part to keep people safe in texas and beyond. well tonight an american photo journalist who contracted the deadly ebola virus while working in liberia is headed back to the states for treatment. he is expected to arrive tomorrow at a medical center in nebraska. meantime in texas, thomas duncan is said to be fighting for his life. listed in critical condition. as maloney reports, another step was taken to track down everyone who may have been in contact with duncan before he ended up in the hospital. a homeless man wanted in connection with ebola patient thomas duncan has been found in dallas. the man described as low risk road in the same hospital ambulance that transported duncan before it was decontaminated. texas officials had announced

day of the protest over china's plan to prescreen candidates. a 29-year-old marine from indiana is the first american to be killed in the military operations against the islamic state group. spears was an airman who went into the water. spears was never found and is presumed lost at sea. this was his first deployment. his father says he was fulfilling a lifelong dream serving as a marine. meantime the u.s. military says its fighters conducted two strikes outside the syrian city today. the strikes and fighting in that area have sent 150,000 people fleeing their homes. this i exidous.

>> the demonstrators began singing. and the chorus was to perform. there was some clapping in the hall during the demonstration. both from audience members and performers. olympic swimmers michael phelps is putting himself into a treatment program after his latest drunk driving arrest. the swimmer said in a statement he is taking time off to enter a rehab program. he was arrested tuesday for driving under the influence. speeding and crossing a double line on a busy highway.

in 2004, he was sentenced to 18 months probation for a dui. phelps says he need to work on himself to make better decisions in the future. 49er fans got a big dose of game day heat today in santa clara. the sun beat down in the stadium as the temperature hit the 90-degree mark. ktvu's azenith smith talked to fans to talk about what they did to stay cool. >> reporter: the scorching sun came down on some 49er faithful. >> i like the heat. but i'm not a heat person. >> reporter: fans wore shorts, tank tops, everyone bringing out the umbrellas to stay cool. >> we have ice, a lot of cold water, big hats, a lot of sun block. >> we brought a hanker chief. >> yes to wipe because i get hot. >> reporter: he wasn't anticipating this heat wave in october. >> whether in kansas city right now is beautiful, fall weather.

through the front entrance. you can see just how close that jeep liberty got to those two customers at jolly donut around 9:30 last night. one person was killed, four others critically injured. >> just like getting hit by a bunch of metal just pushing against you. at real high speed just feeling all the stuff. it was like time just slowed way down. the shop's owner said the person killed was a homeless man who came in every night for a cup of coffee. investigators are still looking into whether alcohol was a factor in that crash. veterans dealing with post- traumatic stress are peddling. they gathered for a kick off ceremony at 8:00 a.m. an began the trip a half hour later. a former marine with ptsd says that cycling gives him a chance to clear his head.

>> just riding really really helps out with my anxiety, frustration and anger. it's a way to meet people. i'm not really the friendly type. >> the run to recovery program helps physical and psychological programs for injured veterans. some have bicycles to accommodate their injuries. president obama helped dedicate a new memorial in washington, d.c. to disabled war veterans. he spoke before hundreds of injured veterans saying the government has not always fulfilled its obligations toward the wounded warriors. he says the memorial represents the challenges we all face to honor and help them in their full-time -- in their time of need. >> we need to move heaven and earth to make sure they get every single benefit, every single bit of care that they have earned, that they deserve.

people trying to escape the heat headed to the coast. the bay temperature 76. that was one of the coolest any bat area. and you see people there trying to escape the heat. >> that was the place to be. baker beach. they're right near the immediate coastline where temperatures tempered a bit with more of an onset breeze. inland today a hot day. santa rosa 96 degrees. even san francisco you can see down in the lower 80s. livermore the hot spot 99 and san jose 90 degrees. everybody cools off as you head into the monday forecast. still a few 90s out there. that cooling trend will continue bay area wide and really kicks in for tuesday into wednesday. here's the live camera of the golden gate bridge showing you what some dense fog making a
