good morning you to. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, october 11. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. look behind you. just beautiful. >> a fabulous view. good morning to you. i'll step out of the way and show you overlooking bay point. wow, what a gorgeous start there. we are waking up with low clouds, fog this morning. even a little patchy and thick in some areas. santa rosa reporting thick fog in and around the airport. prance this is going to -- perhaps this is going to burn off later today. we have better clearing coming our way but we're with it at least through the morning hours. once we get rid of it, we have mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. we do have a warm-up coming our way for the the second half of our day. 66 degrees in concord. low 50s in napa. 58 in oakland. 56 redwood city and san jose you're checking in at 56 degrees as well. so as we get into your weekend, we have clearing skies. we have temperatures on the

rise. today low 70s so partly cloudy skies in the forecast for the blue angels. upper 70s, sunny and warm weather in san francisco for the second half of your weekend. so we've got some nice weather and perfect weather for fleet week weekend. 76 for oakland this afternoon. 85 in santa rosa. upper 70s san mateo and low #s on for san jose. mid-#s on for places like -- mid-80s for places like livermore. tomorrow will be warmer. for the second half of the weekend the warmer weather bringing us a heightened fire danger. i'm have a look at that in the extended forecast coming up. we're following developing news in hayward where an early morning fire killed an elderly man and injured two others. we have more on how neighbors tried to step in and rescue the man. >> reporter: we talked to one of the neighbors that tried to rescue this elderly man from the burning home. he had second degree burns. this is the home where the fire

started. for the first time this morning, fire investigators are inside what used to be the living room, that burnt up shell that used to be the living room. they're trying to figure out how the fire started. it was 3:00 this morning when several neighbors woke up to hear a woman screaming for help. the woman, her elderly father and brother had been in the home in hayward. flames shot out the front door and the windows. the father and brother westbound trapped inside. the next-door neighbor and his son rushed into the burning home to try and help them. they were especial to help the brother escape. when they went back in to help the elderly man, they said the flames were just too intense. >> we went inside again and tried to pull him out but there was something blocking the door. >> reporter: the neighbor suffered serious burns, second degree burns on his hands. his son ended up having to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. a third neighbor tried to go in and help. he was also not able to. as for the elderly man who died

in this fire, neighbors say he is in his 80s. he lived in this home with his daughter and son for decades. one neighbor told us three generations of the family have grown up knowing this elderly man killed in this fire. he was very loved by his neighbors, a part of this community and known affectionately by a lot of the neighbors here simply as papa. president obama will attend another democratic fund-raiser at a private residence in san francisco today. it is a political round table in which 25 guests are paying more than $32,000 each to attend. the president's fund raising blitz through san francisco began last night at the w hotel. guests tell us he spent an hour at the event. there were an estimated did 50 donors snapping foe -- 250 donors snapping photos of the president taking the stage. >> it was not very big and i was right in the front. so we got a great look at

maxwell. a great look at the president. we got to shake his hand. it was wonderful for him to come and speak to us person to person like that. >> the president talked about global issues such as the islamic state terrorist group, the ebola crisis, the russian aggression in ukraine and u.s. unemployment. in attendance were san francisco mayor ed lee and oakland congressman woman barbra lee. not everyone is pleased with the president's visit. >> about a hundred protesters rallied for several hours near the hotel. they waved antiwar signs, displayed a miniature drone and demanded that the u.s. stay out of iraq and syria. >> they have no idea what's going on in the middle east. they give weapons to decide they perceive them -- for sides they perceive themselves not to be on. it's a horrible mess and the u.s. needs to get out. >> one man unrelated to the protest did get into a confrontation with police.

he told them he would not move. officers then handcuffed him and took him away. thousands of people are expected to pack san francisco's waterfront to see the blew angels and watch the commissioning ceremony of the navy's new ship. ♪ >> the blue angels are scheduled to take to the skies at 3:00 p.m. today and tomorrow. people have been waiting a long time to see the blue angels after all shows were canceled by the military last year because of budget cuts. a social media campaign is also under way. it's called selfie with a sailor and encourages attendees to thank members of the military for their service. >> i think it's awesome that there's a lot of support for the military out here. >> everybody is loving the hash tag, taking pictures with us. >> san francisco mayor ed lee is scheduled to speak at today's commissioning of the u.s.s. america. the ship will transport aircraft and ground troops for the marine corps.

its eventual home port will be in san diego. >> i stopped and shook every soldier's hand thanking them for their service. that's what this brings for me. >> heavy traffic is expected in san francisco this weekend because of fleet week so people headed to the festivities are being asked to take public transportation. more details now about the scheduled events for fleet week. precision air shows are going to be held from 12:30 until 4:00 today and tomorrow. the blue angels will perform between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. a sonomo county man has been arrested on suspicion of harassing and filming a child. 62-year-old david olson used a small camera to record up the dress of a 4-year-old girl at a wal-mart store in roanoke park. he's a registered sex offender for a previous conviction involving a child. his bail has been set at $300,000. a man accused of exposing himself to women in belmont may be tied to similar incidents in palo alto. belmont police say they're looking for this manual. they say he is the person

depicted in a sketch released by palo alto police yesterday afternoon. the belmont incident happened yesterday morning just outside peach coffee shop on el camino. two women saw the man touching himself inappropriately inside a vehicle. >> there was a man parked in a white bmw in front of the business and he was exposing himself. >> the most recent palo alto incident happened thursday when a man in a white bmw exposed himself to a woman on her bicycle there on miller avenue. san jose police are searching for whoever burglarized a home and severely injured a family dog. it happened just after 11:00 yesterday morning on culpeper drive. police say the homeowner had been out but then found the injured dog in the home when he returned. the dog is being treated. the two suspects are described as in their late teens or 20s. boat were wearing baseball caps and hooded jackets. police say a bank robber may have hit two banks in san francisco's chinatown just ten minutes apart. police say a man believed to be

in his 50s entered a bank on washington street at 1:30 thursday afternoon. he handed the teller a note demanding money. the teller complied and the robber left. nine minutes later two blocks away a man matching the same description walked into another bank, handed that teller a note and also made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. police also searching for a bank robber releasing this photo of suspect. on thursday he robbed a u.s. bank branch located inside the safeway store on south mcdowell boulevard. surveillance footage shows him walking up to the counter at about 4:00 p.m. he then demanded money from the clerk and said he had a gun although no weapon was ever seen. police say he is armed and dangerous. a company in washington is reprinting 8,000 vote by mail ballots for people who live in san francisco. some postal equipment damaged more than 80 boxes of envelopes as they were being processed. the department of elections says the new ballots should reach voters within a week so

they can vote by mail for the november 4 general election. >> turn around is really quick on the reprints, the ones that we received yesterday are actually already in the mail, first class mail coming out washington. and then these ballots here will be in the mail by tuesday. >> the san francisco director of elections says post office has offered to reimburse the city for the cost of reprinting and mailing out those ballots. cal trans is in the process of installing high-tech tracking devices on its own vehicles. not only can those devices track the vehicle, but it can tell how fast an employee has been driving. they can also detect and flag minor mechanical irregularities before the vehicles break down. caltrans expects to finish installing the units by the end of the month. the san francisco giants are chasing their third championship in five years. today the giants take on the st. louis cardinals in game one of the national league championship series. that game is being played in st. louis but here at home, fans are going to be glued to their televisions and they say they are stocking up on all

because of high fire danger. temperatures are expected to hit the 80s and the 90s. gusty winds could also take down power lines and tree branches. the red flag warning will be in effect from 11:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. monday morning in napa, her run and son -- her run and sonomo counties. a warning also in effect starting tomorrow morning at 3:00 a.m. for the east bay hills and santa cruz mountains. firefighters are continuing to make progress on a wildfire burning northeast of sacramento in placer county. the fire is now 55% contained and has burned 459 acres. the fire along interstate 80 has burned six homes and four other buildings and still threatens about a thousand more. but all lanes of interstate 80 in the apple gate area are back open to traffic after they were shut down earlier in the week because of the fire. calfire has cleared its tankers to get back in the air following a deadly crash in use sell tip. all 22 of calfire's tankers

returned to service yesterday. they were grounded following a  tanker crash on tuesday that killed 62-year-old pilot jeffrey craig. it does not appear mechanical failure played a role in the crash. >> our state's mission is to keep all fires 95 -- 95% all fires ten acres or less. we do a pretty good job of that statewide. >> a calfire tanker helped contain a wildfire that broke out near the sonomo-morin county line yesterday. protests are expected to continue through the weekend in ferg s.o.p., missouri over a police -- ferguson, missouri over a police shooting that killed an unarmed teenager. last night hundreds of people marched to the st. louis county prosecutor's office and called for the officer who shot and killed michael brown to be charged. another protest is planned today at the site of the shooting. a grand jury is reviewing

evidence in the case and could announce a decision next month. a 3-year-old boy remains in critical condition this morning after surviving a fall into a jaguar exhibit at the little rock zoo in arkansas. it happened yesterday morning just about 10:45. police say according to a witness, two animals in the enclosure got to the child giving him some minor puncture wounds. the boy also had a fractured skull. a zoo keeper lowered a ladder into the exhibit and rescued that toddler while other staff members used fire extinguishers to keep the animals away. a full investigation has been launched. your time now is 7:17. let's head on to rosemary. the sunset -- sunset? sunrise is still going strong. and it is gorgeous out there. >> you're right. the sun now up and shining. some of us not seeing the sun just yet. we're also waking up with low clouds and fog. in fact, sfo reporting delays for some arriving flights up to about an hour those delays there. so something to be aware of. meanwhile here's a look at the

beautiful sunrise that claudine mention add moment ago. we will have plenty of sunshine for the afternoon. we have clearing skies for the second half of the day as our pattern begins to switch and dry, warm weather moves in for your bay area weekend. tracking just a little bit of activity here to the north of us but right behind this, we have a ridge of high pressure that will be building in along the west coast and as it does again it's going to clear us out. it's going to warm us up. i think temperatures anywhere 5 to 10 degrees warmer today than we were yesterday. so you'll notice that. by the second half of the weekend, the off shore winds are going to begin to pick up. claudine mentioned this a few moments ago. again, a red flag warning in place for the overnight hours and as we get into sunday, will last all through sunday. won't expire till early monday morning. here are a few details for you that claudine mention add moment ago. wind gus could reach 40 miles per hour. it's -- gusts could reach 40 miles per hour. it's primarily the hills and above a thousand feet.

scattered showers in the forecast. back to the desk. the. k-mart is now the latest retailer to be hit by data theft on thursday. k-mart's informational technology team detected the breach. the cybertech -- cyber' tack started in september. they were able to remove the malware but some debit and credit card numbers were compromised. the the breach did not affect the sears department store chain. those of photos that were hacked from the messaging app snap chat could soon be released. hackers are threatening to expose as many as 2,000 snaps online tomorrow. according to business insider, some of those snaps include nude photos of minors. snap chat photos disappear after a few seconds but some third-party apps allow users to save those pictures and snap chat said in a statement its users were victimized bihacers getting into those apps. getting the green light from the fda, the pill that

southeasterly media is -- social media is buzzing over the controversial remarks made by the crea of microsoft about women and raises. software executive satya nadella was speaking at a women's conference in phoenix when questioned about how they should ask for a raise glit' not really about asking for a raise but knowing faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along. that's good karma. it will come back. >> critics called the remarks shameful and highlighted a lack of gender diversity in tech companies, including microsoft. people have gone on twitter demanding that nadella resign

or get fired. he has since back peddled from his initial comments. he wrote on his blog, quote, if you think you deserve a raise, shoe just ask. newly released documents are showing the inner work actions of former president bill clinton's administration. nearly 10,000 pages of material were made public yesterday by the national archives and the clinton presidential library. those papers cover some of the biggest controversies of the clinton presidency, including whitewater and the monika lewinsky scondal. the clip -- scandal. the clinton library started releasing some of those documents starting in february. the package that will conduct an independent -- the panel that will conduct an end review of the secret service has been named, after some incidents were raised. the panel is expected to suggest potential candidates to lead the agency following the resignation of the secret service's director. the panel will also investigate a prostitution scandal

involving secret service agents during a presidential trip to columbia. thousands of same-sex couples are rushed to get married this weekend after same- sex marriage became legal in several more states. gay marriage is now legal in 27 states and the district of columbia. on monday the supreme court refused to hear appeals regarding same-sex marriage in indiana, oklahoma, you out, virginia, and -- utah, virginia and wisconsin. the decision not to hear those appeals means gay marriage is legal in those states. >> i never thought it would happen in my lifetime. i'm just so excited, probably the happiest day of my life. >> a federal appeals court found bans on gay marriage in idaho and nevada to be unconstitutional. another ban was struck down in north carolina. a new study reveals drinking coffee may be good for your liver. researchers from the national cancer institute in maryland say people who drink three or more cups of coffee a day including those who drink decaf have better liver health than people who don't drink coffee. researchers say drinking coffee

tomorrow. that red flag warming coming today and tomorrow morning. i'll have that in the extended forecast coming up. firefighters are investigating an early morning fire that killed one person and injured two others. that fire started about 3:00 this morning at a home in fuller street. a woman who lived inside was able to escape but her uncle, an elderly father were still trapped inside. a neighbor and his son were able to rescue the uncle, but struggled to get her father to that front door. >> firefighters are now looking into the cause of that fire. coming up in 30 minutes,'ll have a live report from hayward to provide us with any updates on this investigation. the chp is recommending charges be filed against a driver of a fatal accident in petaluma.

this man was killed had a oven broke loose from his car. the chp said the hitch wasn't strong enough for the trailer's weight and safety chains weren't used or secured properly. >> it was an almost 4,000 pound missile going down the road at 60 miles per hour. the chp says trailers heavier than 3,000 pounds are required to have appointed braking system as a backup to stop them. the brick oven did not have one. they're reviewing the case. a former walnut creek police officer has been sentenced to one year electronic home detention for beating a woman with a baseball bat. he attacked a woman in a vacant home that belonged to his father. he said he thought the woman was break nothing the home. she was in the area because she

had run out of gas. >> this is not spur of the moment behavior. this was premeditated, the use of a mask to commit the crime. thompson retired from the police force after his arrest. if he shows good behavior he could serve six months of home detention. a middle school was arrested after bringing a loaded semi-automatic to school. it was reported something suspicious in the back pack. the student was arrested and booked into juvenile hall. it was stolen from a house in arkansas back in 2012 but the student has yet to reveal how he got it. a high school football player is being remembered after he was shot and killed from vacaville. he was killed on monday,

dimitrius ward -- demetri us ward was killed. they wore 21, the number of his jersey. many people were at the game where he was honored. >> we want to say thank you to the high school. there's a lot of love here. >> no arrests have been made in ward's killing. they've identified the mother and new born baby girl who was abandoned in a dumpster. this 13-year-old gave birth, they're looking into the circumstances of her pregnancy and they're looking into child care protective services. they found the baby outside of an apartment complex earlier this week. >> i reached in and grabbed it, i gave it it my wife. i gave her my t-shirt, she brought her inside, massaged her. the baby is healthy and is

being cared for at a local hospital. the incident is a reminder of the california safe haven law, which allows a baby to be surrendered at a fire station with no questions asked. a woman who spent 1 years in prison for a murder she did not commit was released. susan mellen was released from a courthouse last night. a los angeles county judge overturned the conviction. he said the justice system failed her. she heard her confess to the killing and she has a long history of giving false information to the police. >> i think -- i'm numb, it hasn't hit me. i haven't had my break down

. happening today, new york city's jfk airport is going to screen passengers from west africa for symptoms of ebola. people traveling from sierra leone guinea are going to be checked for fever. and other airports will begin screening soon. >> the 30 years that i've been involved in in public health anything like this has been aids. we have to work hard to make sure this is not another aids. 90% of west africa pass through the airports that are conducting the screenings. the death toll has topped 4,000. more than 8,000 cases have been

was killed in an early-morning house fire. as ail little rasmus reports -- allie rasmus reports, neighbors tried to save him but the flames were too big. >> reporter: at least three neighbors tried to help the man. two rushed into the home as flames were coming out of the front door and the windows. right now, you can see what's left of the living room, what's left of the house. fire investigators are still inside. they are trying to look for clues to figure out how this fire started. now, we do know when it started. it was around 3:00 this morning when neighbors woke up to hear a woman screaming from help. the next door neighbor and his son rushed to their aid. they actually went into the house to try to help rescue the man. they were able to help the brother escape. when they went back in to help the elderly man, they say the flames were too intense. >> we get inside, we try to pull him out. impossible, there was stuff blocking the door. >> right now, feeling kind of

well, if you are heading to the beach this weekend, be careful if you plan on going into the ocean. a big storm in the gulf of alaska is generating large waves that are now headed to the california coast. 10 to 11-foot waves today, to get up to 13 feet by tomorrow. officials are also warning beachgoers to be wary of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. the national weather service has issued a red flag warning for the hills in the north bay and the east bay due to high fire danger. temperatures expected to hit the 80s and 90s. strong, gusty winds to brick down some power lines and tree branches. that red flag warning goes into affect at 11:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. monday morning. name, marin and sonoma counties for areas above 1,000 feet in elevation. a warning will be in effect starting tomorrow morning at

3:00 a.m. for the east bay hills and santa cruz mountains. firefighters are continuing to make progress on a wildfire burning northeast of sacramento in placer county. the apple gate fire is now -- is now 55% contained. that fire has burned six homes and four other buildings, still threatens about a thousand more. all lanes on interstate 880 in the'sle gate area are open to -- in apple gate are open. calfire has cleared anchors to get back in the air. all tankers returned to service yesterday. they were grounded following a tanker crash on tuesday that killed 62-year-old pilot jeffrey craig hunt of san jose. investigators say it does not appear mechanical failure played a role in the crash and say fire crews need the tankers to help battle several wildfires burning across the state. >> our state's mission is to keep all fires -- 95% of fires

been reported in seven countries. most of those cases are centered in the west african countries of liberia, sierra leone and new guinea, one american has died after contracting ebola in liberia. a sick passenger who was escorted off a plane in las vegas does not have the ebola virus. six ambulances surrounded that plane as it landed yesterday at mccarren international after reports a passenger who recently traveled to africa became nauseous during the flight. the plane was quarantined on the tarmac for two hours while the passenger was examined. enterovirus cases doubled. 32 cases have been reported statewide, including 12 cases here in the bay area. five of those cases are in alameda county. the cases have been reported, though, in san francisco, berkeley, contra costa corks santa clara and sola -- county, santa clara and solano.

a company in foster city has just received approval from the fda for a new hepatitis c pill. the drug is called harvoni. according to the chronicle, in clinical studies, it clurred 94% -- it cured 94% of patients. scientists will be selling the drug for $1,125 per pill. a major security shakeup for the 49ers that's connected to the ray mcdonald domestic violence case, san jose's police chief announced that his officers are no longer gonna be allowed to moonlight as security for the team. police responded to a domestic violence disturbance call at his home in august. when officers arrived, a police sergeant not working the case was already there. mcdonald had called in shawn pritchard who works for the 49ers when off duty.

season. experts say here in california gas prices are expected to fall as much as 30 cents a gallon before christmas. some stations are seeing their prices drop about a nickel a day. right now, the state average is $3.64 a gallon but don't expect the lower prices to stick around too long. a new carbon tax on fuel kicks in next year and is expected to send prices back up. here is a look at where those prices stand here in the bay area. in san francisco, the average price 3.78. in oakland, it's costing drivers about 3.66 and in san jose, drivers are paying on average 3.64. but some gas stations across the bay area are reporting prices as low as 2.99 a gallon. 2.5 earthquake shook parts of southern santa clara. that quake hit about 4:40. it was centered five miles northeast of san martin. had a depth of five miles. the usgs said it struck east of
