a woman is dead and a man is wounded after an early- morning shooting in oakland. we'll tell you what we just learned from investigators about this case. a trip on a ferry turns into a trip to the hospital for ten people on the san francisco bay. a major crash on a frontage road in palo alto. it may be affecting highway 101. we'll tell you what happened and what's going on with highway 101. and the deadly ebola for the first time has been contracted by someone inside the united states. how president obama is responding. now. good morning. we're live in east oakland, where police are investigating a mysterious double shooting that killed a woman and injured a man early this morning. this is 69th avenue near san leandro street. ktvu's alex savidge has been out there since 4:30 this morning and he just got off the phone with police. coming up in two minutes, he will tell us why officers are investigating two different crime scenes. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve you got an evolving weather forecast. >> a lot going on. no doubt about it. after a hot sunday, in fact, temperatures off mild for some near the coast. there's already a few high clouds moving in. the fog is just roaring. i mean, it's come from san luis obispo. it's about to sake the turn to big sur, pebble. that's gonna cause a huge drop in the temperatures. ridge of high pressure is

moving. 40s, 50s to 60s. some areas have very warm. others are quite cool, yet the breeze waiting. it's finally starting. half moon bay has turned southeast. mountain view, san jose, also los gatos. there is a little south breeze. still easterly at hayward. sfo is trying to turn west. look for this fog. it makes for a tough forecast. the fog will move in and that will send some coastal temperatures down 10, 15 degrees in an hour. santa cruz, that fog will be flying in. we'll see temperatures fall off the table on tuesday. today is the transition day. fog moving up the coast. this will be the warmest day of the week by far. temperatures will be set on the high side by about noon. some of these could be tough inland. by tonight, breezy and much, much cooler. here's sal. we have a pretty serious problem in palo alto on bayshore boulevard near embarcadero. very serious crash, which is visible from parts of 101 and has closed bayshore boulevard.

and if i can pull back a little bit. if i pull back, you can see that 101 is so far not affected. it's a little bit lighter than usual on 101 which is good. and we'll keep an eye on that. but the crash has blocked lanes there and if you are driving on palo alto city streets, you should avoid it. let's move along and take a look at the san mateo bridge where traffic is moderately heavy heading out to the high rise and no major problems there or on the dumbarton bridge. at the bay bridge toll plaza, about a 25-minute drive -- now it's more like a 20-minute drive. we've adjusted our time into san francisco. let's go back to the desk. the investigation continues into a deadly shooting in oakland. it happened early this morning. one person was kill -- killed. another wounded in two violent crime scene. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: oakland police spokesperson confirms that a woman was killed and a man was

wounded in this early-morning shooting. those two victims were found blocks away from each other and there were initially two separate crime scenes. police have finished gathering evidence at both scenes. let me show you video from the first crime scene. 69th avenue off san leandro street. we understand this is where the woman was found shot to death just outside of a car that crashed on the side of the street. this discovery was made about 1:30 this morning, and at about the same time, police were called to 68th avenue, less than a mile from the first scene. that's where a man was found shot. that victim was rushed to the hospital. his injuries are not life- threatening according to the police spokesperson. these two scenes are related. police won't say if both victims were inside the car together when the shooting initially happened. neighbors were surprised to wake up and see this crime scene and one man told me he's freighted by the violence --

he's freighted by the -- he's frustrated by the violence. >> it's unfortunate. we have to work with the community and the police itself. >> reporter: the motive for the shooting is unclear. the spokesperson tells me there have not been arrests. investigators are actively following up on a number of leads. the spokesperson does say that investigators still have a lot to sort out here because it's very early on. they are trying to figure out what the relationship was between these two victims. the woman who was shot and killed and the man who was shot and wounded and is expected to survive. we're live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:05. now to our continuing coverage of the ebola crisis. president obama is ordering federal health officials to quickly find out how a nurse in dallas caught the deadly virus. she was somehow exposed to it by thomas duncan, the liberian man who died last week at the

hospital after returning from africa. doctors say the nurse stoeld them she does not know how it happened since she was wearing a gown, gloves, a mask and a shield as she took care of duncan. now about 50 people who may have had close contact with that nurse are being watched. the texas ebola situation is making bay area nurses very nervous. >> not one more patient, not one more healthcare worker or one more nurse should be infected. >> yesterday, nurses gathered outside kaiser hospital in oakland, sending a message that the cdc's safety guidelines are not enough. they want more training for healthcare workers in case ebola patients are found in the bay area. >> caregivers who are not being adequately trained are being blamed. >> a national nurses united poll of 2,000 nurses shows almost 85% said their hospitals have not properly trained the staff for even.

the nurses -- even -- for ebola. nurses are expected to join a national discussion about hospital preparations about ebola and how the nurses are being trained. kaiser released this statement that says, we're confident in our preparedness plan, personal protective equipment and stringent attention to infection prevention measures which follow the national standards set by the centers for disease control. 7:07. airport health screenings for the ebola virus are happening now at j.f.k. international airport in new york. passengers arriving from the west african countries, they have their temperatures taken and are being checked for ebola like symptoms. the increased airport screenings are expected to expand on thursday to washington, newark, o'hare and hartsfield-jackson in atlanta. those five airports see 94% of the travelers from ebola-

infected countries. now, yesterday, at l.a.x. there was an ebola scare. a woman on this flight from new york had flu-like symptoms. once the plane landed, fire crews wearing special containment suits went on board the plane. doctors later determined she was not exposed to ebola probably just had airsickness. 7:07. bay area school districts are struggling with a teacher shortage. retirements, lack of new teachers and pressure to return to smaller class sizes is increasing demand. a state commission says the low number of people enrolled in teacher preparation programs means there's no fast solution. in the meantime, more people without full credentials are teaching classes. women are better at saving for retirement than men. but still end up with less in their 401(k) plans. that's according to a survey from van guard. the survey found women are 10% more likely to enroll in workplace saving mans compared

to men and contribute a higher percental of their paychecks. but the average woman has just $78,000 saved, well below the $121,000 which is the average for men. two of the reasons why, men in the survey earned an average of 40% more than women and women on average worked 12 hours less than men do over the course of their careers. a swarm of earthquakes rattled the mammoth lakes area. the biggest one was a magnitude 4. it hit around 5:00 p.m. yesterday 15 miles southeast of that mountain resort town. now, last month, the area saw hundreds of small quakes. the experts say it may have been triggered by water pressure from hot springs in the area. 7:09. cuts, bruises, even whiplash. coming up at 7:30, how a ride on a san francisco ferry ended with a trip to the hospital for ten people. plus, former olympic track

good morning. we have a serious crash in east palo alto, where there is a serious major injury crash. this is breaking news. embarcadero near east bayshore. the palo alto police said it's a very serious crash, and they've closed at least one block of the area.

this is visible from highway 101 and may cause some slow traffic in the area. we will continue to follow it. we do have a crew on the way. 7:12. back to the desk. you this this morning, former track star oscar pistorius is back in a croom for a hearing that -- in a courtroom for a hearing that will determine whether he will go to prison. the same judge that found him guilty for the negligent killing of his girlfriend last month is now determining his punishment. he was convicted of culpable homicide. that is unintentionally but unlawfully killing a person. a typical sentence is five to eight years. this hear something expected to last several -- this hearing is expected to last for several days. hundreds turned out for a rally after high school football players were arrested for hazing. they are accused of sexually harassing and inappropriately touching younger members of the team. all have been taken into

custody and suspended from school. they are not being named because they are juveniles. at yesterday's vigil, people said they wanted to show the victims that the community is behind them. >> support for those four young boys so brave to come out and say what it happened. >> hope and change and healing starts now. >> the football season has been canceled while the allegations are investigated. the mayor has also announced a community leadership group to help in the healing process. 7:14. investigators from the state department of justice called to stockton after five people were killed in several shootings that happened within four hours. now, stockton police say they don't have enough detectives and crime scene technicians to investigate three separate deadly shootings. now, one man was killed late saturday night after a family disturbance. a man was arrested. ten minutes later, police say a known gang member was killed. and then a few hours later,

three people were killed and a fourth was wounded in another shooting. investigators don't believe these shootings are related. well, election day is about three weeks away. one of the hotly debated ballot measures is prop 47. supporters say the measure would save california a lot of money because it would make nonviolent crimes like shoplifting and drug possession misdemeanors instead of felonies. but critics say prop 47 would put serious criminals back out onto the streets. they say crimes including possession of date rape drugs and stealing a gun would be downgraded. happening today, daly city council members are expected to approve a new law aimed at cutting down on teen drinking at parties. the ordinance would make parents or other party hosts liable for underaged drinking. violaters will face fines that start at $1500 and rise to $2500. the mayor says he's hoping to

send a clear message that party hosts need to maintain control of house parties and help control underaged drinking. 7:15. sal, you are busy. i know you are watching the golden gate bridge. you are watching several things. >> that's right. we're looking at the bridge crossings. you can see the golden gate bridge. beautiful picture, by the way. nice and clear. chamber of commerce day, as steve likes to say. traffic is moving along nicely, not only here but in marin county as we head down to the san francisco toll plaza. no major problems on the new doyle drive. this is a look at the bay bridge. westbound, about a 25, 30- minute drive into san francisco. if you are trying to catch a train, caltrain is reported on time. moving along to east bayshore near embarcadero there is an injury crash there. this may affect traffic on nearby highway 101. we're trying to get more information. it sounds like a major injury

accident. there is a little bit of slow traffic in hayward getting to it. westbound 92 from about industrial. 7:16. let's go to steve. all right, sal. thank you. a very good 345eu7bly clear morning. there's higher clouds from eekd north. most are -- from oakland north. most are -- you can see that little band of high clouds there. the fog says, i'm on my way. i'll say. it's charging right up there. there's two systems. well, the fog is part of that main system. we'll see a drop of about 20 degrees in our temperatures starting tomorrow. you can see the band of high clouds. get a closer look at it. mostly cloudy to the north. some of these filtered in over parts of the bay. generally clear to partly cloudy for some. 47 santa rosa, walnut creek now says 49 yet upper 60s for some. i think it's about 65 san francisco. half moon bay 50. it was 84 yesterday. sfo, 64. san jose, 58. hayward, 63. some are warm. some are cool.

higher elevations, los altos hills, 58. foster city, 52. belmont says 64. there's 15, 20-degree spread on some. temps. northwest santa rosa, north at napa, south at novato and concord. the peninsula and also along the coast. that's why the fog is getting closer. it's on its way. 57 monterey. i think they were 65 last hour. i think. so that's a sign that the fog is -- or at least the westerly breeze. there it is. it looks like it's knocking on the door at pg. it won't take long to turn into monterey bay and then santa cruz, cap -- capitola. this will be the warmest day of the week. yesterday was the hottest day. today will be the hottest day of the workweek. a lot of these high temperatures will be set by noon. much cooler as we go into tuesday. the fog forecast shows it will ramp up big time as it begins  to move in. 60s and 70s for temperatures

tomorrow. as far as rain goes, these don't look like rain producers. there will be a lot of drizzle and temperatures will drop off. so far, there's not a lot as far as rainfall projections go. this is drizzle. that's light rain santa rosa. even that's not too much. sunny and warm for the morning. then the fog comes in. that will cool temperatures down. a lot of the tides around noon, 1:00 and then the temperatures will drop 10, 15 by the kest. first pitch tomorrow looks mostly cloudy. it will be a big difference than the weekend and also today. temperatures will be in the 60s. maybe a few upper 50s. it looks pretty breezy and mostly cloudy for game 3. fog, cooler, there will be drizzle, light rain to the north bay and breezy and cool on wednesday. high temperatures inland in the 70s that will hold all the way -- one more system and then maybe a little bit of a rebound. back to ebola now, it's not just the healthcare that's

affected by ebola. ripple effects could extend to chocolate. the ivory coast in africa, it's the world's largest producer. cacao. the borders of the coast with liberia and guinea, they are closed now because of ebola fears. the producers of chocolate may not have enough workers for their harvest season. that could mean a chocolate shortage and higher prices. 7:20. kmart will provide free credit monitoring to customers while it investigates a cyber attack. the discount retailer discovered the breach last week. now it says customer payment card information was probably exposed. the offer will be extended to everyone who used a credit or debit card any time in september through october 9th. kmart still doesn't know how many customers would be affected. the big wall street selloff was the sharpest drop on the s&p 500 in two years. that had an effect on most

investors. the 400 richest people in the world lost a total of $70 billion in global equities, down 3.5 trillion in value since hitting a record high last month. so this morning, u.s. stocks, they are stabilizing a little bit. taking a live look at the big board right now, the dow is currently down, 45 at 16,498. it was 98. now it's 97. 7:21. it started as one man's idea of a little halloween fun. a little joke. well, the police say it's out of control. the extreme behavior in a california town that has people saying they are being terrorized by clowns. a potential setback in the fight against isis. a new development just in the past hour involving a key u.s. ally.

frontage road near highway 101. this is at east bayshore near embarcadero. the actual cross street is pull -- pulvis avenue. a very violent crash. police have closed off city streets as they do an investigation. the coroner has not arrived on the scene. our reporter is there. we'll have more on this deadly crash coming up. but it's pretty violent. you see one of the poles -- the utility pole was taken out by this crash. at 7:24. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. new this morning, conflicting reports over whether turkey has agreed to allow the u.s. to use its bases to launch airstrikes against islamic state terrorists in syria and attack. an official told the associated press that there are talks underway about the base issue but no new agreement has been reached yet. over the weekend, u.s. defense officials said there was an

agreement. this comes as the battle for the syrian city of kobani on the border with turkey continues. this is video of kurdish fighters defending the city. turkey has been under pressure to take action but so far has refused to send any turkish ground troops into the battle. new this morning, full operations have resumed at an faa control center near chicago following a fire that was deliberately set by an employee. the fire at the faa facility in aurora, illinois caused thousands of flights to be canceled at o'hare and midway airports and snarled air travel nationwide a few weeks ago. the faa is reviewing security in the wake of the incident. the employee who set the fire is facing cil charges. homeowners who were evacuated by that wildfire in placer county, now they are getting their first look at the damage. evacuation orders have been lifted from the apple gate fire 40 miles northeast of sacramento.

now that fire destroyed six homes and burned more than 459 acres. >> doing a mopup phase at this point in time. we're looking for all of the hot spots within the fire perimeter itself. >> at this point, the fire is 80% contained. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. firefighters have also made a lot of progress containing that wildfire burning at the edge of yosemite national park. the dog rock fire has grown to 311 acres, bit 95% contained. mandatory evacuations for the town of forrester, they've been lifted now. highway 140 leading into the park has reopened. it's been closed since tuesday. you will rather. an air tanker pilot from san jose was killed last week. he was bad thing the -- battling the fire and his plane crashed into a canyon wall. the southern marin fire protection district is offering to rescue anyone who tries to jump off the golden gate bridge

after suicide nets are installed. the steel nets are expected to be in place by the end of 2018. the nets will hang 20 feet below and 20 feet from each side of the iconic bridge. that's expected to deter people from attempting to jump but if they do, the fire crews say they are equipped to rescue people just as they rescue people who get stuck in the marin headlands. ten people were hurt when a ferry crashed into a pier in san francisco. up next, ktvu's brian flores will give us a live report on the investigation into what went wrong on a blue and gold ferry boat. >> reporter: the 41st annual pumpkin weighoff in half moon bay has begun. we'll show you the biggest contenders and find out a secret from one of the pumpkin growers. one of the roads is blocked on east bayshore. we'll tell you more about it. a few high clouds drifting over.

you are looking at the remnants of a car there. ktvu's janine de la vega just arrived on the scene. wreckage has spread across the street. coming up in minutes we'll hear from janine and get an impact on how this is impacting traffic in the area. it's monday, october 13th. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic. steve, you are preparing us for changes. >> dave, have you stepped outside? >> just came back in. >> it's clear out there. mostly clear. there's a few high clouds. the fog is visiting pacific grove. month ray went from 65 at 6:00 a.m. to 57. that tells you the tricky forecast here with the coast. it looks like it's actually moved up right about there. this is about 15, 20 minutes old. it's on its way. santa cruz can be sunny and socked in and foggy. a few high clouds over us, leading edge of the front. 40s to 60s. some areas are very cool. others with are quite warm. with higher elevations continuing to be on the warm

side, 60s. they are coming down a little bit. with a southerly breeze. a lot of 50s, 60s for some. what about that breeze, it's turning southerly in san jose, mountain view and half moon bay. it's easterly at hayward. but it will turn south. here comes the fog. that's gonna give us two forecasts. a forecast in the morning and then a forecast in the afternoon. if there's any rain with this, next system tuesday, not a lot. it's the drizzle which we'll talk more about that coming up in 15 minutes. here's sal. we're following breaking news in palo alto where east bayshore road is closed due to a deadly accident. janine de la vega just arrived on the scene. janine, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, this accident happened at about 6:15 this morning. you can see this happened on a frontage road east of bayshore here right along 101. and in the distance there, you can see there is a car that was involved in this collision, and behind the car, there is a body. we know that somebody died. we don't know if it's a man or

a woman. police are so busy, they haven't been able to tell us if anyone else was in the car. we were originally told this involved two weeks. but when i just got here on scene, another officer did tell us it was just one vehicle involved. here is aerial look from newschopper2 of what the accident here looks like. they have closed east bayshore road in both directions from embarcadero all the way to pulgas in east palo alto. we're there on the city border between palo alto and east palo alto. you know, this is also causing a slowdown on 101 because since this is a frontage road, people are looking to see this accident, we see a fire truck here responding but i don't believe it's for this. i also want to mention in the distance, there is a light pole that's actually fallen down. we believe this was involved in the accident. one of the light poles here on

the street. so there are people, work crews who are dealing with that as well. impacting traffic here on 101 as people approach university and for more on that, we go back back to sal. >> all right, the sirens you are hearing, there is a crash on the highway, southbound 101 at embarcadero. there's a new crash on highway 101. that's what the fire crews and chp are responding to, so very near where janine is standing, we have a new accident. this time oits be the highway -- it's on the highway. we'll talk about that in a minute. the bay bridge toll plaza, 30- minute delay. right now there are no major problems on the bridge but traffic will be busy as you drive true. traffic continues to look okay once up make it to san francisco. but again, 30-minute drive time. this is not turning into a holiday for most people, as you can tell. everyone is pretty slow. we had an earlier stalled vehicle up there on the bridge. that slowed things down even

more. let's go to 880 northbound where traffic is moderately heavy driving from this point to downtown oakland. a new accident, a brand-new one, southbound 101 near embarcadero, the medics are still responding. traffic is backing up out of menlo park heading down to palo alto. this will affect southbound 101 but northbound may be slow in the area. 7:35. let's go back to the desk. well, the coast guard is still investigating a weekend ferry bhoet accident where ten people were hurt at san francisco's fisherman's wharf. brian flores joins us live to tell us what they think caused that accident. good morning, brian. >> reporter: we're along pier 39 here in san francisco's fisherman's wharf. next to me is the blue and gold fleet. they are getting ready to take passengers automatic along the bay. yesterday, an accident involving one of these boats injured about ten people. the accident involved a boat called the peralta. it was about to take passengers from here to across the bay

when while backing out of the dock, the captain of the boat hit some pie lings -- pie lings. about ten people were taken to the hospital for whiplash, cuts and bruises. as for the boat, no structural damage. minor paint damage. we understand there was some damage to the pylons. they operate 19 vessels, eight which is owns, the remainder are owned by the water transit agency. the pell ral da was taken -- perahta was taken out of information. we're live in san francisco, brian flores, san francisco san francisco. 7:36. a fisherman was swept to his death yesterday by wig waves at

a marin county beach. it happened when two men were swept off the rocks at rodeo beach. the firefighters pulled one man out of the water. he was suffering from hypothermia but is expected to be recovered. second man could not be revived. firefighters say the ocean is very unpredictable and those large sneaker waves can hit you without warning. >> if it's known death to walk up to the line, you will stay away from the line. people don't realize and have the respect for the ocean. >> now, the man who survived, he says they were trying to get down off the rocks when that big wave hit. so far we've no word about the man who died. it could be another day of perfect wave conditions for surfers off the senate county coast. the surfer and photographer eric nelson sent us this video shot near pillar point

yesterday. incredible. nelson estimated the waves were about 20, 25 feet. of course only the best season the surfers dare get into these waters and ride a wave like that. 7:37. people living in portolo valley are on alert after a mountain lion was spotted in a neighborhood. it was seen about 9:00 saturday night near minoka. wildlife experts say hikers and joggers in areas where mountain lions live should avoid being outside at dawn, dusk and nights when the big cats are most active. happening now, some of the biggest pumpkins in the world are heading to the scales in half moon bay. ktvu's tara moriarty is there talking to growers who are hoping their prized possession is heavy enough to earn them extra cash. >> reporter: the weighoff has begun. most are lined up.

we have godzilla behind us. he's pretty big. we have the top four contenders. over there is elsa. she's mighty big. that's no name, the owner didn't want to give his pumpkin a name. he didn't want to get too attached. >> but over here, to our left, we have gary miller, the proud owner of betty. how much do you think she weighs? >> 15 or 16. >> reporter: hundred pounds? >> yes. >> reporter: yes. what's the secret to growing her? i know you got a lot of things going on with the soil. you have to keep it really rich. >> little good stuff in there. all kinds of things that makes the soil alive and exciting, you know, for the root systems to go down through. >> reporter: we know the record was broken to the tune of 2300 pounds. to we think anyone -- do we

a jeep was hauling the trailer and it failed to stop at a careen down a steep hill. that trailer was carrying about two dozen people and flipped over. everyone inside was injured. 17 people were taken to the hospital. six of them are still in the hospital this morning. one is listed in critical condition. two small children were hurt, one of them critically when a bouncehouse went airborne. this happened at a farm in new hampshire. the farm owner says he just purchased the inflatable house to raise money for a fund- raiser next weekend. he said he set it up because it was wet and he wanted to dry it out. but he did not tie it down properly. two little boys, ages 2 and 3, hopped inside, not knowing it wasn't ready. while they were in there, a gust of wind picked up the bouncehouse into the air, it came down hard, more than 50 feet away. >> it's so unfortunate. it wasn't meant to be used. i just hope that the kids are

mile. right here, close to this frontage road, you can see 101, so these people have been looking at this accident as well as another accident that happened there in the southbound lanes. so it is a mess out here. i do want to go to video that we shot earlier of this deadly accident on east bayshore that occurred at 6:15 this morning. somehow, a driver here lost control. it appears that the vehicle hit a light pole because it is down in the road. we know emergency crews responded but the driver did not survive. it's unknown at this point if it's a man or a woman or where that person was from. we do know that palo alto utilities have been contacted. it's unknown if this is a --  how many customers this is affecting as far as power in the area. but again, this frontage road, east bayshore is closed and we're told that it will be that bay for a couple of hours. again, there's still a lot of

use 280 instead as you can see, these vehicles are being taken off the freeway right now. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's improved a little bit. it's about a 20-minute delay. we had an earlier stalled vehicle on that upper deck. no problems getting into the city. b.a.r.t. reports trains on time getting in. westbound 580 livermore valley, some stop-and-go traffic. it's a little bit better today as you drive into dublin. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. oakland police have just given us new information about an early-morning shooting that left a young woman dead and a young man injured. ktvu's alex savidge is live now with what investigators say led up to this shooting. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. both victims we understand were riding in a car together early this morning when someone in another car pulled alongside and opened fire on them. police say at this point, they aren't sure what prompted this shooting. a 22-year-old woman was killed. her 20-year-old friend was left wounded, although his injuries are not life-threatening

according to police. after their car was hit by gunfire, it crashed into a parked car along 69th avenue near san leandro street. that's where police found the young woman's body. that was at about 1:30. the man injured in the shooting was actually found about a mile or so away. a little less than a mile away on 68th avenue. officers found him in that area. he was rushed to the hospital. we're told he is expected to survive. neighbors said they were surprised to wake up and see this crime scene outside of their doors. one man said he's freighted by the violence -- frustrated by the violence. >> it's unfortunate things are happening in our community. we need to work with not only the community but the police itself. >> reporter: investigators are searching for the shooter or shooters they believe were inside that second car that, again, pulled up alongside the victim's car and started firing shots. police do tell me that both

victims, the young man and young woman, are from oakland. investigators -- audio difficulties] >> we lost our signal with alex. onto our continuing coverage of the ebola crisis. president obama is ordering federal health officials to quickly find out how a nurse in dallas caught the deadly virus. she was somehow exposed to it by thomas duncan. a liberian man who died at the hospital after returning from africa. doctors say the nurse told them she did does not know how it happened, since she was wearing a gown, gloves, mask and a shield as she took care of duncan. now about 50 people who may may had close contact with that nurse are being watched. >> the texas ebola situation is making bay area nurses very nervous. >> not one more patient, not one more healthcare worker or one more nurse should be

infected. >> yesterday nurses gathered out side of kaiser hospital in oakland. they sent a message that the cdc safety guidelines are not enough. they want more training in case ebola patients are found here in the bay area. >> care givers not being adequately trained are being blamed. >> a new poll of about 2,000 nurses shows almost 85% said their hospitals have not properly trained the staff for ebola. this coming wednesday hundred of nurses are expected to join a national discussion about hospital preparations for ebola and how the nurses are being trained. in the meantime, kaiser released this statement, it says, we are confident in our preparedness plan, personal protective equipment and stringent attention to infection preventive measures which followed the national standards set by the centers for disease control. airport health screenings for the virus are happening now at j.f.k.

years. this sentencing hearing may  last several days. boy, a volatile scene in hong kong. several hundred people gathered in front of barricades set up by prodemocracy protesters demanding the barricades be taken down and the roads reopened. police had to form a line separating the protesters and the counterprotesters. the people who want to take down the barricades say the protests are hurting their businesses. 8:14. hundreds of people turned out for an anti-bullying rally in new jersey after seven high school football players were arrested for sex-related hazing. the high school students are accused of sexually harassing and inappropriately touching younger members of the team. all of them have been taken into custody and suspended from school. they are not being named because they are juveniles. at yesterday's vigil, people said they wanted to show the victims that the community is behind them. >> support for those four young boys who were so brave to come out and say what had happened.

scheduled for 2017. boeing announced the nearly $5 billion deal but it waited until today to say. the airline is named after a giant mythical bird. alaska just became the 30th state for same-sex marriage is legal. a federal judge ruled yesterday, the state's gay marriage ban violates the constitutional guarantee of due process and equal protection. now, alaska could appeal to the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco. however, that court just ruled against idaho and nevada. there is a new report out that says women are better at saving for retirement than men. but they still end up with less in their 401(k) plans. that's according to a survey from van guard. now, the survey found women are 10% more likely to enroll in workplace savings plans compared to men and they contribute a bigger percental of their paychecks. but the average woman has about

turkish ground troops into the battle. homeowners evacuated by a wildfire in placer county are getting a look at the damage. all evacuations have been lifted. the fire destroyed six homes and burned more than 459 acres. >> we're doing a mopup phase. weefrt's looking for all of the hot spots within the fire perimeter itself. >> the fire is 80% contained. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. firefighters have also made significant progress containing a wildfire burning at the edge of yosemite national park. the dog rock fire is 95% contained. mandatory evacuations have been lifted and highway 140 leading into the park has reopened. the highway had been closed since tuesday. an air tanker pilot from san jose was killed last week while battling this fire after

it may take a while. some 60s, 40s. take your pick. 20-degree spread on some of the current temperatures. higher elevations are rather warm but they will begin to cool off. some areas in the 50s. some in the 60. hayward, san jose. we're waiting for the south wind. the fog is on its way. by this time tomorrow we'll be about 20 degrees cooler the sunny and warm for most but the fog is moving up the coast. warmest day of the week by a country mile. 80s for some. 70s for others. but a lot of these highs will be set by 1:00, 2:00. here's sal. right now, we still have a lot of slow traffic out there. things are beginning to get better in some areas. first of all, we'll start with the toll plaza. right now traffic is lightening up a little bit. if you are driving in from 880 and you have a transponder, it's much easier. 880 northbound and southbound,

that doesn't look as it typically does. northbound 880 is usually slower. some people may actually have today. northbound traffic is moderately heavy. i want to mention the peninsula. southbound 101 still a mess because of an earlier crash. we still have the crash on the frontage road. i just got off the phone with b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. has resored service in san leandro because -- well, they had some service shutdowns because of a fire near 238. service has been rae stored. there's general delays of 20 minutes on the fremont line to all locations . this is just in from b.a.r.t. the coast guard is investigating a ferry boat crash. brian flores joining us live now to tell us what they think caused that accident. good morning, brian. >> reporter: hi, dave. good morning. i just got off the phone with the coast guard. they say the both involved called the pe ral da was

cleared -- peralta was cleared. we're long pier 39 where a lot of the ferry boats, getting ready to use the boat. but yesterday, the accident involving the boat nailed the peralta injured people. the boat was to take passengers from here at pier 41 in san francisco to alameda when while backing out of the dock, the captain of the boat hit pylons. the boat shook. several people lost their footing. some people were taken to the hospital. as for the boat itself, there wasn't any structural damage, minor paint damage. we understand there was damage to the pie ling that the boat hit. they operate 19 vessels.

coast guard investigator inspected the boat shortly after the accident. it was cleared last night to be used today. it is unclear, however, whether that same captain will be on board as well today. we're live in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 8:33. happening today, the daily city city council expected to approve a new law aimed at reducing teenaged drinking at parties. now, the ordinance would make parents other other party hosts liable for underaged drinking. violaters would get fines that would start at $1500 and then go up to $2500. the mayor says he's hoping to send a clear message that party hosts have to maintain control of house parties and help control underaged drinking. 8:34. two fishermen were swept out to sea by large waves at a marin county beach. one of them did not survive. it happened yesterday when two men were on the rocks at rodeo beef. the southern marin fire department and coast guard were

both called in. firefighters pulled one man from the water. he was suffering from hypothermia but is expected to recover. the second man could not be revived. the coast guard said his fishing weighters filled with water weighing him down. firefighters say the ocean is unpredictable and large sneaker waves can hit without warning. >> if it's known death to walk up to this line, you are gonna stay away from the line. people don't realize and have respect for the ocean. the man said they were trying to get down from the rocks when the waves hit. so far, no information has been released about the man who died. it could be another day of perfect conditions for big wave surfers off the san mateo county coast. surfer and photographer eric nelson sent us this video shot near pillar point. nelson estimated the waves were 20, 25 feet. of course, only season surfers dare get in these waters to ride these waves. 8:35. the giants and the cardinal they are heading back to san

that's the liberian man who died last week in the hospital after coming back from africa. and developing news in the south bay we're following fill. a pedestrian was hit and killed on east bayshore road in palo alto. janine de la vega is there now with more on what we're finding out about the driver and the charges he may now face. janine snm. >> reporter: we're -- janine? >> reporter: this is closed at pulgas. there's this terrible accident. the body is still there laying in the middle of east bayshore. in the last 20 minutes we hearned that's a pedestrian. the driver of that makeled car you see -- mangled car you see survived and was uninjured. police say around 6:15, the driver of the nissan lost control, hit a power pole and flipped over in the road. in the process, a male pedestrian in the area was

struck and died at the scene. the driver we're told is an adult in his late teens. he stayed at the scene cooperated but was arrested by police for suspicion of driving under the innubs. the driver -- influence. the driver is at the police department being it viewed. we're told he's from the interview. the identity is not being released. this is affecting traffic because the frontage road here east bayshore along 101 is closed. it was causing -- or is still is causing a little bit of a slowdown near embarcadero on highway 101 but back out here live on the scene, east bayshore is gonna be closed for a couple of hours. because the investigation here is still going on they need to collect evidence and again the coroner still needs to get here to examine the body and take it

monterey bay. looks like it pulled off. but it's on its way. it's on the way. it's going to run -- it always runs into a little bit of resistance around santa cruz. it will make a huge impact later tonight into tomorrow. the ridge of high pressure which gave us the hot, hot temperatures on sunday is moving. a little band of higher cloud ahead of it. the system will be slow to arrive. it won't arrive until tuesday, wednesday. 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s. if you get an east wind, it's very mild. if you don't it's on the cooler side. 31 in tahoe. ukiah at 50. 62 in monterey. they went from 65 to 67 to 62. it just depends on the wind direction. if you get an easterly breeze, it's will probably still warm. 10, 15, 20 degrees cooler. we topped out on sunday.

today will still be warm for half maybe three quarters of the day. but then everything will start to work its way toward a westerly wind. the fog and low clouds will play into a drizzle forecast. proent is probably going to hold up. the first front to come through a ridge of high pressure. that usually takes its time. but by tuesday night, late tuesday into early, early wednesday, i think we will get rain. some of the projections for rainfall, not that heavy. but there will be another system coming in on friday. .25 up to ukiah. 13/100ths santa rosa. after that it will probably be more drizzle than anything else. we'll see big changes on the temperatures. won't see 90-degree temperatures for a while. 80s. some areas right now are very warm. again, a lot of these highs will be set by noon or 1:00. the fog continues to work its way up. mostly cloudy for game three. it looks like a lot of low cloud. temperatures a good breeze.
