up in giant orange. it will remain that way for at least another week as the giants head back to the world series to face the kansas city royals. alex savidge has been out in the city as well sense 4:30 this morning. coming up in two minutes he will fan reaction. he will also show us all of the work that got under way and has been continuing throughout the night while most of uses finally got to sleep. they have been working. it's friday, october 17th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. you stayed up for the game; right? >> i did. i was happy they finished before 9:00. that worked well for me. >> steve, you were watching too. >> that is why i said 8:50 good timing. >> a lot of cloud cover you guys and not much rain yet. it is still well offshore. this system is moving toward the mendocino coast but it will take time. there is also a couple little wrinkles. two systems i think it will split. there is one up here and there is another one developing back here. and that will slow it down.

but also at the same time it will delay everything as far as rain goes for most of the bay area. but a lot of cloud cover. so a breezy, mild, mostly cloudy day. so nothing yet. morning commute will be fine. 40s and 50s on the temps. that breeze turning southerly yet. it is to the peninsula and south bay. starting to hit concord and a little bit at novato. still northerly and westerly. so getting closer. we are getting closer on the north coast. i would still say a couple hours away. for us we really have to wait for back here. that will not arrive until much later. cloudy with late rain. mild conditions. rain moves in later on. some of it could be a quarter to a half an inch. a lot of 60s and 70s. the voice is holding up i do believe mr. sal castaneda. >> all right. thank you very much. what you said very important with drivers not going to have to deal with rain for morning

commute. it may be later in the day as steve said. much later. if you are driving, you can put that in the back of your mind. this is 80 westbound. a little bit more than 60 miles an hour average speed and 18 minute drive time between those two points. when you get to the bay bridge, the metering lights have gone on. the approach everies are getting a little filled up. not too bad but it will be a little bit slow. if you are driving from novato top san rafael, southbound 101 looks good. let's go back to the desk. the giants are heading back to the world series. they earned their place in dramatic walk off fashion. >> super exciting way to finish. ishikawa was the unlikely hero. that gave the giants the 6-3

victory. it was vindication for him. they misjudged a fly ball early in the game. and vindication for early in the season when he was considering retirement. before the giants called him up in late july. >> best organization i have ever played for. for giving me the opportunity to play in the outfield. >>ish coo way normally a first baseman. he was only in the outfield because of an injury to michael moore who came off the bench in the eighth inning. all six of their runs came from the long ball. no doubt the giants fans would be showing off their bride at the office today. alex savidge is in san francisco with more of the

excitement. >> but certainly not routine for giants fans. a lot of excitement here in the city and of course giants pride is evident everywhere you look. there it is the beautiful ferry building glowing orange as you can see. also as we pan over here to the right hand side and you look at the downtown area you might be able to see the orange trim there. the top of one embarcadero center. this 21 is celebrating another trip to the fall classic. >> reporter: this is wham things looked like as after last nights win. giants fans flooded the street. drivers were honking their horns and flying their giant flags. there were of course a lot of police officers out to make sure the people celebrate the responsiblely. we understand for the most part people did. post game celebrations after

that win over the cardinals were peaceful with no major issues to report. while fans were out celebrating, the team over at graphic sportswear in san francisco was busy working. over night this was the scene. they were printing 25,000 of the official giants national league championship shirts. it says we own the pennant. the team at graphic sportswear they had to print some of these shirts before the giants clinch. . the players could have some. after that walk off homer and became official things really cranked up. there is so much preparation and ready to go. most of the people here are giants fans. it's a little different than we normally do. >> reporter: it's an exhausting job for those folks. they have been up there for a

the oakland a's -- [ inaudible ] >> who could forget this? 5:04 p.m. october 17th, 1989. the game was postponed and that series did not resume for ten days. now at the time of the earthquake, the fans of the worlds series game they didn't know about all the devastation happening outside of candle stick. 63 people were killed. more than 3,000 were hurt. most of the casualties happened in oakland when the cypress freeway collapsed. janine de la vega is in the newsroom. >> reporter: the deadliest single incident happened on the double decker freeway in oakland. it was a chaotic scene. we heard from a woman that was traveling on it during the

quake. >> we are flying over the structure right now. that section of highway that connects the bay bridge to 880. >> reporter: ktvu news crew flew over the scene just moments before the collapse of the structure. 42 people were killed when the freeway crumbled. one driver suffered serious injuries. and remember going in and out of consciousness. >> i could feel it in my hair and face and everywhere. and i can hear people screaming from the outside of the door. and it was like a fog because i was floating in and out of consciousness. i didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: disaster experts say the death toll would have been much higher had it not been for the 1989 world series. many people that nor hallly would have been on the freeway at the time were home watching the game between the a's and

giants on tv. the game was called off and played ten days later. and i remember i was a freshman in high school at the time. and i remember i was walking up the stairs of a two story house and the shaking started. and it seemed like it went on forever. very long. pam, dave. >> yeah janine. see, you have your personal stories. we will be hearing from others as well. it reshaped the bay area. pam, you were talking about that. an interesting look here at the dramatic change in the view from justin hermanen plaza looking at the iconic ferry building. this earthquake significantly damaged the double decker freeway you are looking at. city leaders decides to tear it down and look, they replaced it with what you see today. the palm tree line, the

embarcadero boulevard that we enjoy today. we have much more on the earthquake anniversary on our ktvu channel 2 website including a lot of photos and archived video from 1989. it's all under today's hot topics at ktvu.com. an investigation is under way into a report that five people were sexually assaulted at a fraternity house in berkeley. the alleged victims say they were drugged. it took place between last friday and sunday. the report from uc berkeley campus police was then handed over to berkeley police since the fra terribility house is in the city's jurisdiction and not recognized by the school. >> time is 6:11. how about good news? golden gate transit buses are rolling this morning because of a last minute breakthrough in contract talks. bus workers had planned to walk picket lines today as part of a contract dispute. but late yesterday the bridge

district announced a tentative agreement with union workers. that averted the plan's one-day strike. it would have effected more than 20,000 bus lines. oakland boy charged with setting a teenager's skirt on fire is taking a plea deal. coming up at 6:30, how much time he is expected to serve and how the victim's family is reacting. >> a nurse who was infected with ebola thanking her coworkers for their support. the very tearful message she recorded before her overnight trip to the east coast to try to save her life. >> right now we are looking at a commute where traffic is getting much slower here on highway 4 coming up through the grade. we will update the east bay commute when we come back. >> from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. everyone says cloudy. the rain is getting close to

they are not saying why or if adrian or his uncle may have been the intended target. police have arrested man that is accused of -- earlier this week police released this store surveillance video. someone who saw that video spotted the man and they called the police. the 20-year-old suspect was arrested at a peninsula parking garage where he worked. he was wearing the same distinctive black shirt and red tie seen in that video. now to our continuing coverage of the ebola epidemic. the first texas nurse tested positive is thanking her coworkers.

>> pham flew to a maryland airport late last night. workers in biohazard suits escorted her from the plane to a waiting ambulance which then took her to the national institute of health facility. she will be treated there by a staff of specialists. now there is concern that the other infected nurse amber vincent may have been sick earlier than originally believed. before seeking treatment, she took a frontier flight from dallas to cleveland. some flew on her initial flight to cleveland last friday. other people did not share flights with her but they flew on the same plane days later.

our time is 6:16. hundreds of people at san diego state university may possibly been exposed to meningitis. an 18-year-old student that had it died this week. she belonged to a sorority and went to a couple of parties just last week. doctors are pointing out this bacteria is not easily transmitted through the air but you can spread it through close contact. like drinking from the same glass, kissing someone, or living in close quarters. san francisco's reck and parks department is changing its policy after a big argument between tech workers and a group of teen anallers over using soccer fields. the fields are at the mission park playground on 19th and linda in the heart of the mission district. a video shows a confrontation between neighborhood soccer players and employees of drop box and air b & b who pay a fee to reserve the field. protestors went to city hall demanding the reck and parks department stop renting playing fields.

yesterday city leaders agreed to keep the fields open to everyone. time is 6:18. let's get you out the door on a friday morning. sal, is it feeling like friday light? i know you are still on the giants. >> no, it is feeling a little friday light. make no mistake fridays are a little lighter. we are going to see some evidence of that. especially later in the morning. if you are driving to the bay bridge, it is a 15-20 minute drive into the city. and around from 5:30 until about 8:30 it's about the same. and then you see tail off on what we call friday light late for the morning commute. moving along and taking a look on westbound 580 traffic is moderately heavy. there are no major problems driving through. that is already looking better than it nor hallly does. if you are driving in the south bay, northbound 280 still looks good from san jose into the valley. at 6:19. steve, we don't have to worry

about rain for the morning commute. >> that is absolutely correct. evening commute can be a little different there. thankfully for the morning everything is good to go. it is getting closer to the mendocino coast. a couple parts of the system. there is one going north and one that will split over us. if it splits over us, that is okay. i think it will hold. there is plenty out here but it has a ways to go. travel storm anna -- tropical storm anna very close. very close to being hurricane strength. it looks like it will probably reach hurricane strength probably about 70 harp. accelerating now west, northwest at 14 miles an hour. the track continues to say it will go to the south. again it's a big system. it will impact the bigger island. it will weaken a little bit. and stays south of maui. but it is going to be it looks like hurricane strength. so far the track stays to the south. we have a lot of clouds overeats and they are just in

advance of this system i'm standing right in front of. and there it is. the rain getting closer to the mendocino coast. but nothing yet. this one is in the developing area of low pressure. that will weaken it. it looks like it will break off from that but probably not until later tonight into tomorrow. it looks like a piece will dive toward southern california. 40s and 50s. sfo is at 60 degrees. temps should come up here with a southerly breeze. san roe moan is still at 49. mid 50s pittsburgh. 40 in tahoe. truckee is 28. no breeze yet. that will pick up a little bit later tonight. 49 ukiah. 50 in sacramento. it's our system. it's getting there. for us we have a lot of cloud cover in the morning but that is it. mostly cloudy today. dry morning commute. this afternoon and evening system gets a little closer and this will then drive in giving us rain over night friday into saturday morning. and then it will clear out. this next system does have i think for the north half inch

held a demonstration yesterday at the hall of justice. they pointed to recent examples of violent encounters on the job. one officer ended up on the hood of a woman's car. you might remember that photo after he issued a ticket. a spokesman for the district attorney says the office takes these incidents seriously. it is prosecuting the case. the agency that handles parking control will meet with workers union about their concerns and find some solutions. republican candidate for governor neil kashkari's campaigning here in the bay area in his uphill battle to unseat incumbent jeremy brown. gave a pep talk and also helped out with the phone bank in getting out the vote. the latest field poll shows governor brown with 50% support compared to 34% for kashkari. still kashkari says it's not over until it's over. >> every vote matters. and we have to fight hard and work hard to earn every vote

and get as many people to turn out and vote as possible. >> kashkari did some attention. a lot of it was negative about this tv show. it shows him saving a drowning little boy and accused brown of not rescuing kids from poor performing schools. the head of the administration school will update congress today. that canceled 5,000 flights. faa director michael will tell lawmakers the fire highlights the performance of upgrading equipment at the country's air traffic control facilities. now the fire on september 26th is believed to have been set by a contract worker. the faa is pushing for new technology focused on guiding plane by satellite rather than radar. it's now 6:27. a new round in the battle over pot clubs in san jose. coming up in 25 minutes the reason some of the businesses could be closing up shop today.

will split part of the system. another one right there. we have two of that system that will weaken it and split it. it looks like a lot of cloud cover over us. temperatures starting off in the 40s and 50s but it's starting to come up. and we are getting a sourly breeze. sfo at 50 degrees. petaluma is in there. also healds burg and lake port. there is a little chill in the morning air. the cloud cover not moving in yet. that will trap some of the cool air which means it will be a cool day with 60s for some. cloudy to mostly cloudy here. 70s on the temps. sal, all quiet on the roads? it's getting a little bit more crowded, steve. we've had a couple incidents pop up recently in the last few minutes. westbound 580 at 80 they are reporting a motorcycle crash. we have been looking for it. joe our camera operator and me we have been looking here. i don't see anything but they

are saying it is there somewhere in that mess there is a crash. traffic is backing up on 580 from 24. this 19 mccarthur maze as you come around the traffic is going to be just a little bit busy coming through. there are no major problems here. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, westbound traffic is going to be slow as you come up. there was something on the bridge that was slowing things down. it could have been a slow moving vehicle and now the metering lights have been switched on extra slow. we have slow traffic on the altamont pass. it does get better by the time you reach the dublin grade. 4:33 let's go back to the desk. the giants are going to the world series again in case you didn't hear. they earned the spot very dramatically in walk off fashion. >> ishikawa hits one into right. the giants win the pennant. >> the bottom of the ninth

ridiculous. travis ishikawa was the unexpected hero with that three run tie breaking home run in the bottom of the ninth. the giants won 6-3 beating the cardinals. it was vindication for ishikawa who earlier in the game missed a fly ball. after these celebrations on the field, the party moved into the giants clubhouse. [ cheering ] . a lot of spraying going on. the players and coaches had their goggles on. the champagne and beer was sprayed everywhere. this is the fourth time the giants have celebrated like this in the last month. when they beat pittsburgh in the wild card game and beat the washington nationals in the division series and now they beat the cardinals in the national league championship series. you will see a lot of orange and black around your job today. that is because giants fans are

really showing their pride after that big victory last night. ktvu alex savidge is live in san francisco now with more on the excitement leading up to the world series. good morning, alex. >> reporter: it will be quite a bit of fun in san francisco leading up to the world series next week. if it's october, then it's probably a good bet you will see a lot of orange around downtown san francisco and take a look behind us here. the beautiful ferry building all it will up this morning. glowing orange in honor of the giants. national league champions and heading back to the world series after that thrilling walk off win and this city is celebrating. after the victory last night, giants fans flooded the streets of san francisco from south of market over into the mission. there were drivers honking their horns and flying their giants flags. and there were quite a few police officers that were out and about trying to make sure

people celebrated that win responsiblely. police tell us for the most part all of the celebrations were peaceful with no major issues to report. while fans were celebrating, there was a whole team of people at graphic sportswear in san francisco. they got to work printing 25,000 giants national league championship series shirts. the team there at graphic sportswear had to print some of the shirts before the giants actually clinched the pennant yesterday. so that players would have them and there would be some available in the store at at & t park after the game. right after the walk off homer the operation that really kicked into high gear so they could get more ready for today. employees tell us it is exhausting and exciting all at the same time. >> it's a combination of both. i'm on my 30th hour. we are just trying to get through it. most of the people here are giants fans. they are pretty excited. it's a little different than we

normally do. >> reporter: and all of those shirts were being boxed up when we left the warehouse there this morning. they will be put on trucks and immediately shipped out. and you can bet giants fans will be scooping up the shirts throughout the day today. the shirts say we own the pennant. given the track record it might have been a good idea for the shirts to say every other year. >> don't know. i will rely on you i just want them to win. i i.e. with you. >> maybe we don't want to count our chickens before they hatch. >> that is right. let's keep our hopes up. the tickets to world series won't be cheap. tickets for game one and two until kansas they range from $683 to $13,000. the game three in san francisco

right now the tickets range from $537 for standing room only to $110,000 for a view reserved outfield. they play game one of the world series tuesday in kansas city. you can see it right hoar on ktvu channel 2. the first pitch just after 5:00. game two next wednesday also here on ktvu. the two teams come back to san francisco for games three next friday. san francisco police are busy this morning. they are asking anyone with information about an assault near at & t park last night to call the police. it happened about 10:00 in the area of third and channel street. police say a group of people were fighting when a shot was fired. now police don't believe anyone was hit by the bullet, but one victim from the fight remained at the scene. that person had a fractured nose and was taken to the hospital. it's not clear yet if this fight had anything to do with the giants game.

>> the bay area is remembering the loma prieta earthquake as well. the quake caused 63 deaths, more than 3,000 injuries and billions of dollars in damage. the deadliest single incident happened on the double decker freeway in oakland. coming up in just seven minutes, we will hear from a first responder to the collapse of the cypress structure. now a number of events are planned to mark the anniversary today. in oakland there will be a community preparedness event and memorial service. san francisco will also hold an earthquake preparedness event along with a commemoration to honor firefighters and first responders. in other news this morning. a very scary story. a mountain lion setting. it has many people on edge. the mountain lion was spotted at 7:45 tuesday morning at the soccer fields at williams

elementary school. the school has since issued an e-mail telling people to be cautious. >> this has never happened before. i have lived here ten years and we have never had mountain lion sightings. >> the sighting was just blocks from where another mountain lion was spotted last week. you may remember this incredible video. huge cat capturing a neighboring surveillance camera. capturing this young mountain lion on the roof of his car. a 17-year-old boy pleaded no contest to last years brutal attack on an a-gender teenager. richard so many mast was charged with setting sasha fleischman's shirt on fire. it was an attack partly motivated by homophobia. thomas agreed to a plea deal.

he will serve seven years at a state juvenile facility. fleischman's mother had sympathy for thomas. >> we really feel for richard and his family because of what seems to have been a childish, impulsive, tragic lack of judgment. >> it was a prank. he didn't realize he didn't appreciate the potential for a grave injury. >> now as for sasha flashman, he is now a freshman at massachusetts institute of technology. the student from berkeley has physically recovered from those severe leg burns he suffered in that bus attack last november. 6:41 is the time. reports of sexual assault at a fra tenty house in berkeley. coming up in 20 minutes the disturbing link in all the reports and the reason berkeley campus police happened the investigation over into the city. >> but first 25 years after the loma prieta earthquake. what san francisco was doing now to make sure people will

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's 6:44. we are talking about what happened 25 years ago today. the loma prieta earthquake forever changed the bay area. the look of it as well. for those of us here remember that. shows a then and now look. this is the ferry building. look at that. the difference when they put that freeway down in front of the ferry building has completely changed the look of the embarcadero. much of the marina also was rebuilt after the earthquake. that has certainly changed as well. the deadliest single incident happened on the double decker freeway in oakland. this is the cypress structure. brian flores is joining us now. talking to one of the first respondsers that went to that

-- responders that went to the collapse. >> reporter: good morning. just hearing the stories from everyone who was here at that time. even yourself. you were living in the marina at the time. just amazing. i can't believe it's 25 years after the earthquake. so many memories. will gorman is here. you were working as a paramedic at the time? >> no i was working as an emt. based in west oakland. nine or ten blocks away from here. >> reporter: give us your memories. take us back. 5:03 p.m. a minute before the earthquake struck. what were you doing? >> we were doing a rig change and aparticipantly my rig -- apparently my rig change didn't happen because they put me along with another person. made two ambulances out of one. they told me to go out into the neighborhood and see what we could help with. until we got the call. >> reporter: we are look at video of the cypress structure.

obviously very dramatic video. what was it like for you to see this? was it something out of a movie? >> yeah. we had training on treage and how to assess patients. but it was just like out of a movie. people were coming to me with injuries and bleeding and head injuries. and all we could do is assess them, put them on back boards and get them to the hospital. >> reporter: how long did you work the scene and how long did you work in terms of a period a lept of time? was it for a week? >> no. we were private we just assisted the emt agency. then we did a back up 911. 911 calls were stacked and we had to respond to those for the county to clean them up basically. to get their backlog taken care of. did that until 7:00 in the morning. >> reporter: obviously you are very pivotal in treating the patients. we were talking earlier about how citizens of oakland at the time were just helping as well.

can you describe that? >> definitely. we had citizens coming out with their ladders and forklifts and were helping along with everyone else. they were very crucial. >> reporter: 25 years later first off can you believe it's 25 years later? what memory do you take from that knowing that you helped so many people? >> just that i was doing my job that day. and the thing is you've got to worry about your job and stuff like that. my family knew i was working so they knew what i was. but i didn't think about that until i got off in the morning. >> reporter: and really quickly we only have 20 seconds or so. talk about the differences and how it's changed 25 years later. obviously we have a new bay bridge. we have other things as well. >> i think they are positive changes in having things retro fitted as well. i think it's safer for everybody. >> reporter: thank you for sharing your memories with us. a lot of people have memory us this morning 25 years after the

earthquake. we are here at station 3 in oakland where there will be a ceremony. one of several that are taking place later on today. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. >> also one of the lasting images of the earthquake is this terrifying scene. the upper deck of the bay bridge collapsing on to the lower deck. killing one person, closing the bridge for an entire month. the quake disaster led to the construction of the new eastern span of the bay bridge which opened to traffic last year. time is 6:49. san francisco pretty close to completing a $4 billion sizic upgrade of the water system. sutro reservoir is the city's third largest and last to but graded. 15% of san francisco's water comes from right there. a two year, 30 million seismic upgrade is almost done. the improvements include large new square posts made out of concrete and rebar.

i have better news about that motorcycle crash. it seemsth injuries were not that serious. however, westbound 80 as you come up to the bottom of the toll plaza bay bridge. i one of the lanes is taken away by that crash. they are trying to get it out of the way. you can see more tow trucks are coming through. at the toll plaza itself, you can see is traffic slowing. there was something on the bridge that was minor but the metering lights have slowed down. if you are driving on bart, cal train, or muni they are doing well. let's go to steve. i say that too, sal. what am i doing here? thank you, sir. mostly cloudy skies. a little cool for some on the mild side. you can see that system is inching closer along the coast. there is a lot back here. but the key is it's back here and it has to get over here.

and that will take awhile. we do have tropical storm almost, almost a hurricane and it looks like it's moving toward the hawaiian islands. it's almost close to the island and hurricane strength. to them it's westerly. just to the west. it will reach hurricane strength tonight. 75 miles an hour. hold that as it goes closer toward maui and oh wahoo. if it stays a little farther to the west. it looks like tonight into the weekend that is where they are dealing with it. and even though it's not stronger, it's still a hurricane. we have a mostly cloudy sky condition and some of that rain is getting closer. getting closer but still a ways away. we are waiting for back here. the problem is there is another low forming on this system and that will slow it down.
