expansion joints along the upper deck of the bay bridge, but two metal plates meant to protect the work are actually causing big delays for drivers coming into francisco. new at 6:00, ktvu's david stevenson looked into how soon things are expected to get better. >> reporter: the bay bridge morning commute slowed to a crawl this morning, all the way back to the toll plaza, on a day when many drivers expected an easy ride. bay bridge commuters are complaining about a longer-- >> it was nasty and i came in early. >> reporter: -- bumpier ride. >> kind of like, bam! >> reporter: all thanks to these. two 1 1/2-inch thick steel plates at the west street exit. they were put in place wednesday night, part of a 60- day project to replace six expansion joints that allow the deck to move back and forth. >> we noticed some cracking in the bridge decks and that's usually an indication that the expansions are failing. >> reporter: the work's being done at night, but daytime

video shows how the giant metal band dades are slowing traffic and causing tie-ups. >> estimate is 55 minutes at the height of the commute. people are not used to encountering them. they go up there and they slow sometimes to a stop. >> i came across the bridge around 6:30 and it was backed up all the way through the maze. >> reporter: despite warning signs, cal trans says drivers can ride over the plates at up to 50 miles an hour, the current speed limit, without damaging their cars. >> it's a hazard. >> reporter: this man can't wait for the work to be done. he says he nearly rear-ended a car this morning. >> the car stopped over it and it was bumping. when i went over it, it shook my whole front end. >> reporter: cal trans says the commute should speed up, as drivers get used to the plates. the project is expected to be completed by late december. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2news.

. the giants win the pennant! >> with that, the giants headed to the world series against kansas city. maybe there is something lucky about even-numbered years. giants won the series in 2010 and 2012. now 2014, they are going back. or maybe it's just the giants come alive in october. whatever it is, the magic of the giants' post season is fantastic. that win last night in the bottom of the ninth was thrilling. giants fans immediately started gearing up for another trip to the world series. ktvu's alex savidge shows us how they are showing off their orange october pride. >> reporter: -- the crew at graphic sportswear in san francisco cranked up the printers and started cranking out the official giants shirts. >> most of the people here, they are giants fans, so they are excited. it's a little different than what we normally do. a lot more pride behind these shirts. >> reporter: 25,000 of these shirts were made here and shipped straight to giants dugout stores around the bay area. >> one for my son, one for my daughter, one for myself. >> we own the pennant paraphernalia was the hot seller at at&t park. fans are fired up about this scrappy squad that has that magic touch in the post season. >> pence, posey, panda, all the san francisco household names. they are superstars, but they don't see themselves as superstars. they see themselves as a team. >> travis ishikawa hits one into right! >> reporter: and this is the moment giants fans will never forget, the shot to right field by travis ishikawa. this is a team that over and over finds a way to win and fans feel confident as they

face-off against the kansas city royals. >> they are a great team, but this is i think our year again. >> kansas city's pretty tough, but these guys keep pulling through. adversity, adversity, and they just keep getting through. pretty amazing. >> reporter: every other october, this is the routine in san francisco. the ferry building and coit tower, glowing orange. fans in a frenzy. [ cheers & applause ] >> reporter: and the giants chasing a championship. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. >> and take a look at this picture. great shot, huh? that's travis ishikawa kissing the game-winning homerun ball that he hit. a life-long giants fan from oak dale caught it. the fan's name is frank burke. he says when he realized the ball was coming his way, he was saying, soft hands, soft hands! he then brought the ball back to the giants and asked him what he would like. he said, well, how about tickets to the world series? initially, they said no. we can give you tickets to a game next season.

on ktvu.com. look on our home page. in vallejo, a 76-year-old woman, struck by a hit and run driver, recovering from serious injuries tonight, while her family is asking how something like that could happen right in the middle of a crosswalk. ktvu's katie utehs learned the intersection is notorious for speeding. >> oh, god. >> reporter: people living along vallejo's redwood street say a prayer for those trying to cross. this lighted crosswalk is where a 76-year-old woman made her attempt. >> she pushed the button, was about to cross. she was already almost to the middle, if you can see how fast the cars are driving. she was already almost to the middle. two cars were coming and one just hit her. >> reporter: witnesses, still shaken, more than a week after the october 8th collision, didn't want their faces shown. >> hit her probably on the side and just throw her over. she went up in the air and came down. the car didn't even slow at

all. >> reporter: the woman is a seamstress who lived at one of the two nearby senior living facilities, is still in the hospital. >> no one has the heart to break the news to her, because there's a possibility she may lose her left arm. >> reporter: i tried to cross the street here, but a driver looked me in the eye and refused to stop at the crosswalk. cars speed by here. it's a dangerous combination, with elderly pedestrians. as the hit and run driver sped off, others tried to go around the scene before police arrived. >> she was trying to get up, but she couldn't. some people stopped the traffic, because people were still trying to go by. >> reporter: investigators say they plan to interview the woman in the hospital now that she's conscious, because so far, they have little to work with. >> she was kind of like mid -- a small car, more sporty looking, i think, but i'm not so sure. >> reporter: meanwhile, her family is offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. >> just please come forward. please come forward. we just want answers. >> reporter: in vallejo, katie

utehs, ktvu channel 2news. today, uc berkeley student facing charges of sexual assaulting another student was cleared of any wrongdoing. >> he was found factually innocent. we hope and will move quickly to get him back into school. >> this morning, the alameda county district attorney moved to dismiss charges against 20- year-old eugene quillen. charges stem from an incident that allegedly happened september 27th at the delta epsilon frat house. prosecutors made clear in court and to ktvu, after reviewing all evidence and talking to the alleged victim, they say no crime occurred. they also said there was no evidence, contrary to reports, that any drugs were involved. 25 years ago right now, many parts of the bay area were in flames and people were being pulled from rubble. at 5:04, october 17, 1989, the loma prieta quake.

it measured 6.9. 63 people were killed. the quake caused billions of dollars in damage. john fowler joins us live, with stories of heroism from the fateful day, and a warning about the future. john? >> reporter: that's right, julie. if you take a look at the bay bridge now, it serves as reminder for many people of earthquakes in the bay area. no reason to be reminded, for many people we talked with today, who risked their lives the last time the earth shook violently. at this oakland quake preparedness event today, some, too young to remember what older ones can't forget. >> all i could feel was the rolling. it was just really carrying, really frightening. didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: a ceremony to remember the dead and the heroes of the collapsed cyprus freeway. >> they were pulling people out, doing anything they can. it was, it was pretty horrific. >> look at that, dj! >> it's moving! >> reporter: clarissa flippen

lived just a block away. >> everybody wanted to get into recovery mode to try to help out. >> reporter: almost a mile of oakland freeway had collapsed on cars and the people in them. police were ordering rescuers out, because of aftershocks, when doctors found a 6-year-old boy pinned in a car. >> we all discussed it and we decided, no matter what, as long as he was alive, we were going to stay there. >> reporter: children's hospital oakland surgeon james betz told me to free the boy, he to amputate his leg. to get to him, dr. betz had to cut through the boy's dead mother. >> we used one of the fire department's chainsaws. gruesome, horrific when one thinks about it. we had to do that to save his life. >> reporter: dr. betz says healthcare roirs providers and the rest of us need to be prepared for hard choices of survival. >> it will happen again. it will happen again. >> reporter: scientists are quick to point out just that, that it's not a matter of if,

but when a much stronger earthquake hits the bay area. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2news. >> john, i know you were here at the studios the day the earthquake hit. we're not far from the cyprus structure. you were one of the first reporters to arrive at the cyprus structure. what was that like? >> reporter: frank, it was a very sobering experience. first, it was eriely quiet. many people up on the second floor on that collapsed cyprus structure were in fact dead. lots of people were swarming to the area to help. i saw a man climb up the crumbled concrete to try to get in to help. firefighters were bringing ladders and climbing in. at the same time, there were aftershocks. we could all feel them, yet people were still risking their lives to do that. and that part of this day will

couple hugs. >> from strangers? >> random people, yeah. >> reporter: sure enough, when i hit the streets, giant high- fives were there, and all because of this giant highlight. >> travis ishikawa hits one into right! the giants win the pennant! >> reporter: in 2010, i was working, covering the giants at a pub in san francisco when they took down the phillies in the nlcs. in 2012, i was right here at the ballpark as a fan, left field bleachers, in the rain when they won against the cardinals in game 7. and then in 2014, i was at home in the living room with the family, high-fiving. when there are big moments, people tend to remember. walking around san francisco today, we found just that. >> on the couch, heart pounding. >> living room, sitting. then i immediately stood up and freaked out. >> unbelievable, just made my night. >> i was in class that night. >> last night? >> yeah, last night. >> we were in the stadium and we couldn't believe it. [ cheers & applause ] >> the crowd just went crazy,

ashbury made famous in the 1960s. and in kansas city, there's 18th & vine, home to blues and bbq's since the 1920s. i have a feeling we'll be learning a lot about kansas city in the next days. >> no offense to kansas city, but i'll take san francisco. >> that's a no-brainer. >> exactly. let's bring in mark tamayo and talk about the weather for game 1, next tuesday, a little after 5:00 our time. how's it looking? >> this time of year, typically there's a few storms that can get in the way, but game 1 looks great, with mostly clear skies, no rain threat. same forecast for game 2 as well. here is the forecast, if we take a look at the maps, from the bay area closer to kansas city. here's the plan for next week. game 1, world series at kauffman stadium, 59 degrees, mostly clear skies. temperatures dropping back down into the upper 50s and winds out of the southeast at 7 miles an hour. as i mentioned for game 2, looking pretty good as well. we'll keep an eye on the

conditions out toward kansas city over the next few days. right now, we have the clouds, a few rain showers as well approaching cape mendocino, toward eureka, parts of mendocino county as well. not all of this is reaching the ground just yet, but coverage is on the increase. looking at a few spotty showers popping up in parts of the north bay. that's where we are expecting the bulk of the coverage. this is the radar image, kind of exaggerated a bit. showing you all the moisture, not all of this reaching the ground just yet, but gives you an idea. things are changing right now. that will be the case over the next few hours, especially near the coast, especially up in parts of the north bay. current numbers, santa rosa right now at 69 degrees. san jose at 70. walnut creek, 71 degrees. here is our live camera moving around a bit, showing you scattered high clouds out there, looking toward the golden gate bridge, just beautiful. the chance of a few showers for tonight, in fact this is perfect framing, put a pause on that and look at the clouds and a few breaks in the clouds. nice light there as well. partly cloudy skies for saturday afternoon. next system moves into the

region on monday. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning will be in the 50s. lots of clouds, the chance of a few scattered showers first thing saturday morning. the best chance will be later on this evening into early saturday morning, the bulk of the action up in the north bay. then skies becoming partly cloudy for the remainder of the day on saturday and sunday, dry. for tonight, mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers, the chance of a shower tomorrow morning. then on monday, we're tracking another round, at least of potential rainfall that could be moving in from the north. so at least in the short-term, that activity does slide to the south and then this cold front, that will be the source of a few showers for tonight. then that sun/cloud mix for tomorrow afternoon. sunday, still a few clouds out there. forecast highs for tomorrow, 60s and 70s. oakland, 73 degrees. san jose, 76. sunnyvale, 75. san francisco will go with 70. half moon bay, the art and pumpkin festival looks pretty good. clouds to start out the day, temperatures in the 60s. a look ahead at your five-day

. well, how's it going, everybody? lots going on with the giants, of course the world series, but it is friday night, time to talk high school football. our game of the week, petaluma high school against el molino, big division battle. rick crist, the head coach of the pete luma trojans, and my alma mater, so a special night for me, rick. first, we'll talk football in a second, but i'm real proud of the trojans and your program there. you have done a lot of charity work. i live in napa. you guys were there and helped us out with the earthquake. talk a little bit about what your guys decided to do to help people suffering after the earthquake in napa. >> well, definitely in our community we have some great people. our parents and the coaching staff and the players got
