happened. steel breaks caused drivers to hit the breaks. david stevenson has been following this story. and says caltrans has put that project on hold and find out what happens next -- christien kafton has been following this story. >> reporter: you see those steel plates that caused friday's commute are now gone. friday's commute over the bay bridge is a nightmare. traffic backed up into the maze. crossing the bridge took people more than an hour. >> i came across the bridge at 6:30 and it was backed up all the way through the maze. >> reporter: the problem, drivers slowing down as they approached these metal plates. >> the traffic back ups really were horrendous. we've been looking for a way to do this without causing the

back ups. >> reporter: the commute should be back to normal starting monday. crews will be meeting tomorrow to fill -- figure out how to get -- >> reporter: jamile west is one of the commuters that found a way to get around the commute. he drove around it. >> when i heard about the commute i went to the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: he's hoping for a smooth monday morning drive. >> i didn't feel the bump or anything i think they're up now. >> reporter: caltrans has used similar plates for repairs on the richmond san rafael bridge and here in the bay bridge. but say in the past they've gotten used to the plates much quicker. no word on when they will

resume. new details about a story we first brought you. police say 20-year-old jean luke la port of american canyon drove his pickup right into the two women as they walked in a parking lot as laurel street: one of the woman was run over right after she was struck. now police chased the truck and eventually arrested la port. he is scheduled to face a judge tuesday on attempted murder charges. police say the victims injuries do not appear to be life threatening. a man accused of groping two young girls in san leandro is due in court tomorrow. christopher german was arrested on thursday just days after those alleged crimes. a at a target store caught german walk in. he inappropriately groped a girl there just 15 minutes after doing the very same thing at a wal-mart store. most girls are under the age of

10. german is scheduled to enter a plea tomorrow. a special ebola team will be training tomorrow. this team will be on stand by ready to deploy. today marks the end of the quarantine period for the first man to die of ebola here in the united states. >> so far it appears the family of eric duncan was not infected with the potential deadly virus. >> reporter: thomas duncan fiance and her family do not seem to be sickened.

meanwhile nurses talk about what it's like to be in the front lines. >> on the way out you're like taking off the stuff that has been touched. you know 100% you dealt with a patient with ebola. that's pretty scary. >> now i can say from here that i'm going to die until my last drop of blood to defend her honor. >> when people leave the plane. we will take their temperature with a distance thermometer

without touching the body. >> reporter: a nurse has been taken off a cruise ship and ended up testing negative for ebola today. more details today thomas eric duncan's fiance issued a statement saying the family is grateful for their health and looking forward to getting out of quarantine. louise wrote in part. our heart goes out to the young women who have been infected with this disease as they were trying to help him. and the family of vinson released a statement saying they remain prayful and optimistic about her condition. the 21-year-old is in stable condition. mean while the first nurse to contract the virus nina pham is said to be doing very well.

bay area nurses held rallies and nurses last month calling for more hands on training on how to treat ebola patients. the california nursing association and national nurses united are asking state regulators to formally adopt what they call optimal safety standards. such standards include requirements for hazmat suits and accelerated hands on training programs. a national weather service has issued a hazard's alert for tonight through thursday evening for the california coast from sonoma county to monterey. tonight the coast guard announced the crews rescued someone off carmel. this system bringing big waves is also going to bring us a chance of rain. and you've been tracking these

waves. >> you can see the waves not too big today but they will be increasing as we head into the monday forecast. the storms that do generate the rainfall also generate the wind that produces the swell. that swell will be approaching in bay area. a lot of energy approaching our website. wave heights around 4 feet just offshore. look at what happens to our north and west. that energy will be approaching the bay area coastline. so just be extra careful for tomorrow. but especially for tuesday. as far as the rainfall, not much here as of yet. there you go with the live doppler sweeps and rain showers being detected to the north. for the most part just partly crowdty -- cloudy skies. we're dry right now. 63 in san jose. santa rosa in the upper 50s. but monday rainfall could be on the order of a few .1 to to a quarter of an inch.

look at what happens, the shower activity not widespread but it will be working its way closer to the bay area. we'll have more on that and possibly more rain chances in the five day. that's all coming up at around 10:35. ana is no longer a hurricane and people in hawaii are relieved. this afternoon ana was downgraded to a tropical storm. the storm continues to shed a lot of rain causing flooding and road closures. big swells have brought joy to surfers. but officials are asking people to stay out of the ocean. hawaii airlines cancelled a few interisland flights this morning. two people are hospitalized after a hit-and-run crash in the tenderloin section of san francisco. police say it happened around 6:30 this evening. a light colored bmw struck a 50- year-old woman and an 80-year- old man on mason and turk street. they were reportedly in the crosswalk.

their injuries are not considered life threatening and police are searching for the driver. a woman is in the hospital recovering tonight after an apartment fire in pleasant hill. firefighters responded to pleasant hill road. it appears this fire started in the kitchen and was caused by unattended cooking. that victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital with serious burns and smoke inhalation. the city struck a deal with pg & e on friday to install gunshot tracking devices on utility poles. those devices known as shot spotters are already installed in buildings. they will reduce this to $240,000. those with additional devices are said to be installed soon. investigators spent the day scouring the rural area in virginia where human remains thought to be those of a

a smashed car after a carjacking at a popular berkeley market. there was a high speed chase after a man car jacked a woman at gunpoint. that wasn't the first car police say 26-year-old benny williams stole tonight. new at -- new at 10 clock, katie utehs has the story. >> reporter: first of all she wasn't injure and she second she was able to provide a clear description to police. police officers caught the suspected carjacker after he slammed a vehicle. >> officers estimate 65 to 70 miles per hour. >> reporter: police then arrested benny williams of oakland after they say he ran from the wreckage. >> he tried to run from the

something to really watch for the forecast. we could have a changing weather pattern for today. tonight we have the fair skies out there. looking out toward the san francisco bay and bay bridge. high clouds on the increase right now. tonight showers and the extended forecast definitely rain to the north that could be drifting to the bay area. you can see that in the overcast models. first thing tomorrow mostly in the 50s. monday rainfall just maybe about .2 of an inch in the south bay to .25 of an inch. reaching the bay into the early morning of the afternoon. by 5:00 and 6:00 we're going to clear things out with partly crowd -- cloudy skies. this is not widespread significant rainfall but stale scattered showers out there. tuesday dry, wednesday dry.

but then the storm track takes camp offshore. definitely rainfall to the north. if this does move to the south. some of the forecast models have been increasing their probability. slight chance of the north bay. forecast highs for tomorrow in the 60s. warmest locations in the 70s. livermore 72 degrees. san jose 70. sunnyvale 68 degrees. partly crowd -- cloudy skies on tuesday. a chance of a shower in the north bay was we'll have to keep an eye on friday and possibly saturday. those rain clouds may want to pay a visit to at&t park. it could change but it's kind of on the horizon right now. oakland school kids headed out to the coliseum to watch
