pedestrian related crash, in the past 12 hours. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we're now learning more about a massive drug bust called "operation road trip" that investigators say disrupted a major mexican drug cartel. ktvu's alex savidge was there for the announcement and joins us live to let us now how much meth was confiscated and how many people were arrested. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: tories, good afternoon to you. this -- tori, good afternoon to you. this bust was a big bust. local police worked hand in hand with the state department of justice and in essence, they wiped out part of the cartel's shipping operation here in california. this takedown was dubbed "operation road trip." >> there's a reason it was called road trip. these drugs were being driven on the roads all the way up to richmond, the bay area and even farther beyond us to northern california. >> reporter: this lengthy

investigation led to the seizure of 500 pounds of methamphetamine, all of it we understand found inside one home in antioch. as you can see from the photos, it was stored and shipped in cans, disguised as food. 22 people were arrested here, and the accused traffickers were connected with the sinaloa cartel out of mexico. the meth was brought in across the border from mexico and shipped according to authorities from southern california up here in contra costa county and then some of it was even shipped beyond to other parts of the west coast. this was the largest drug seizure in contra costa county history. it's one that hole police believe will have a positive -- local police believe will have a positiveict pan on the the quality -- positive impact on the quality of life. >> this began in a far away place but they brought their crime, drugs and violence to our region, to our community and to our neighborhoods.

>> reporter: and this was the latest in a series of drug investigations carried out by the department of justice working with local police. in fact, this was the third of three operations, all told, this collaboration between local police and state authorities has taken more than $40 million worth of meth off the street. local police said this latest takedown certainly made a huge difference. we're live in richmond, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, alex. parts of the bay area received some rain this morning. ktvu camera caught some downpours around san francisco around 9:30 this morning. you can see the windshield wipers hard at work and a lot of puddles on the road. steve paulson is here with a look at how much we got. is more on the way? >> maybe friday, saturday. that's a long way off in terms of weather. very little rain. in the old days we would laugh at the system. ten months of dry weather we'll take it. cloudy skies, light rain, drizzle. most of it has been well to the

crashes involving pedestrians in the city. yesterday, around 6:30 in the evening, two people were hit while trying to cross the street in the city's tenderloin. officers are looking for a light-colored bmw seen speeding away. this morning, a man was critically injured after being hit by an suv in the richmond district at 10th and geary. that was around 6:00 a.m. and brian flores joins us live from the most recent incident that claimed the life of a man on sloat boulevard. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: we spoke to the family of the man who has lived in this neighborhood for more than 50 years. he was hit and killed by a driver this morning, crossing the street on 43rd and sloat right across the street from the san francisco zoo. now, the san francisco medical examiner's office has identified the man who was hit and killed at 87-year-old lewis van velden. his family said he was crossing the street trying to catch the bus like he's been doing for years. when before 7:00 this morning, he was hit by a driver. that driver stopped and is

cooperating with police. but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. police say it was not raining at the time. that was not a factor. but they are looking at other factors like how dark it may have been. >> we think she was probably doing the speed limit. we think the factor was the light. it was around dusk. it was just getting daylight and down by the beach, sometimes it can be a little darker just because of the fog and then also the fact that the gentleman didn't use the crosswalk. >> reporter: the man's family says they've lived at the home on sloat for 51 years. he leaves behind a wife and an adult daughter. we spoke with both of them this morning. they were brash shus enough to talk with -- gracious enough to talk with us and said lewis always complained about the speed drivers would go. they say lewis was healthy, always exercised and they are simply trying to move forward. >> life goes on.

>> good lord asked for him to come over and make room for him. that's the way it goes. life, we have to keep going. tough. >> reporter: police were out here this morning for a couple of hours blocking traffic in the westbound direction of sloat for their investigation. the westbound direction was the direction the driver was headed this morning. it remains unclear if that driver will be facing any charges but ktvu's noelle walker, she's here as well. she will have her story about this accident as well as other accidents that we've seen here in san francisco in the past 48 hours. we're live in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. a self-proclaimed prostitute accused of killing a google executive was back in court in santa cruz. the judge ordered alix tichelman to return to court december 5th for a preliminary hearing. santa cruz police say alix tichelman killed forest hayes by injecting him with a fatal dose of heroin. it happened last november while the two were on board his

yacht. police say surveillance video shows alix tichelman did nothing while hayes laid dying. they say she even finished a glass of wine before leaving the boat. her lawyer tells us the video will show that hayes's death was accidental. >> it will indicate to all of you that this is an accident and panic, not in any way a malicious or intentional act. >> reporter: alix tichelman is facing several charge, including manslaughter. if convicted, she could get up to 15 years in prison. a man accused of groping two young girls inside target and wul mart stores in san leandro is due in court. christopher german of san leandro was arrested on thursday just days after the reported incidents. investigators say he inappropriately touched a girl inside a target store just 15 minutes after doing the same thing at a nearby walmart store. both girls are under the age of

10. german is expected to enter a plea today. another victim has come forward in palo alto in the case of a man exposing himself to children. after seeing tv news reports, palo alto police say a couple reported that their 13-year-old daughter was also flashed by a man with a similar description in early august. earlier this month, a man exposed himself to a 10-year- old and 14-year-old girl in separate incidents. the suspect's description is similar for all three cases. so far no arrests have been made. but police patrols are increased in the areas where the incident occurred. the fight against ebola continues with 43 people now released from isolation in dallas. as john roberts reports, this comes as the cdc updates its procedures for healthcare workers. >> reporter: the u.s. military now being called on to tackle ebola in america. defense secretary chuck hagel ordering a quick strike team to handle the deadly disease. it's a 30-person team of

doctors, nurses and trainers who will be able to deploy anywhere in the u.s. within 72 hours. >> we have unique capabilities in the united states military. our medical health profersals, we wanted to be able to lend this capability to the government if needed. >> reporter: meanwhile here at the cdc, officials are expected to announce a strict new series of protocols for healthcare workers dealing with ebola patientses requiring full bodysuits and hoods at all times. the change is coming after two nurses who took care of a patient in dallas contracted the virus. 43 other people who also had ksht with the patient were cleared -- contact with the patient were cleared for monitoring on monday. >> they do not have ebola. they are people who have been through an incredible ordeal and people who need our compassion, our respect and our love. >> reporter: meanwhile, in west africa, nigeria has been declared ebola-free but the situation continues to deteriorate in liberia, guinea and sierra leone. the window to contain the

outbreak is closing quickly. >> if we want to limit the amount of cases to an amount which is controllable, we need to keep it down. other ways it escapes from control. >> reporter: more than 4300 people have died from ebola with more than 79,000 infected. john roberts, fox news. police in indiana are now investigating a possible serial killer after a confession and a gruesome discovery. plus, pet owners know the huge challenge of trying to rent a home in the bay area. how one city is trying to make it easier for this group to find housing.

a suspected serial killer is under arrest in indiana after police say he confessed to killing a woman and then led officers to the bodies of six other women. police say 43-year-old darren van is taking responsibility for the killings. the case began to unfold friday, when the body of a strainled 19-year-old was found in a motel 6 in hammond, indiana. van, who is a convicted sex offender, was arrested and then began to confess to other killings, he directed investigators to three abandoned homes in gary, indiana over the weekend where the other bodies were found. some were badly decomposed.

>> during a subsequent interrogation of him, he admitted the criminal activity he was involved with. >> ask van is expected to be charged later today shoo today is the last day to he register to vote in the elections. ktvu's janine de la vega talked to people in santa clara county to see if they are motivated to if to the polls. >> reporter: outside the santa clara county registrar's office it's quiet. election officers have a booth set up. but in a matter of two hours, just tree people have come by to register. the deadline to cast a vote is 11:59. for some -- >> i guess i never got around to it in all of these years. it's not something i evwears interested -- i ever was interested in.

>> just get your vote out there. >> reporter: inside the county office there were a couple of people trickling in. in san jose, one of the races will be for mayor. a survey found that dave cortese is favored by 34% of the voters, while sam liccardo is supported by 26%. 40% are still undecided. public safety and managing finances in the city are key issues. >> is i'm voting for dave cortese because i believes he represents the lack of services that we've had in the late eight years under mayor reed. >> i'm voting for sam for mayor because i like the way he thinks. he's not gonna ask for a ton of money. >> reporter: besides pushing people to register, the county needs help at the poll. more than 800 election workers are needed especially those who speak spanish and chinese. the pay ranges to $95 to $180.

>> if you don't have time to come to the registrar's office, you can download one of these forms online, fill it out and mail it. just make sure it's postmarked today. reporting from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 2 investigates uncovers english-speaking school children being mislabeled and placed in a program for kids who need help learning english. a frustrated mother contacted ktvu saying her kids were automatically forced to take a test from the contra costa school district after she checked the box on the survey saying spanish was also spoken in her home. she said her kids barely understand spanish. but the test determined her kids were not proficient in english and were put in a program for extra help. 2 investigates discovered more than 93% of students tested in the district last year had the exact same outcome. >> i felt like a hostage to the system because you really don't have an out once they are

labeled, they are labeled. >> the disturbing thing we found, once a student gets triggered to take the test, it's unlikely that that student will be found to be english proficient. >> tonight at 2 evacuate, how much funding the school district is getting for each student placed in the program. we also brought these concerns to a district representative to get their reaction to parents' concerns. that's tonight at 10:00. the berkeley city council may soon make it easier for renters with pets to find a home. the city council is set to meet tomorrow to discuss a proposal requiring all landlords in the city to allow pets. under the plan, a landlord would have to accept the pet as long as it can be reasonably accommodated and the tenant accepts responsibility for damage. supporters say it would cut down on animals abandoned at shelters because owners could not find pet-friendly housing of the but critics say pets can cause more damage than a pet

deposit can cover, leaving landlords to foot the bill. a warning if you plan to head to the beach. the coastline is under a hazard advisory right now. the national weather service says large swells from a storm in the gulf of alaska are heading toward the california coast. they would generate dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves. last month, in fact, a father and son died at ocean beach when they were swept away by rip currents. the advisory stretches down to monterey county and will last through tomorrow. after a weekend of sunshine and warm temperatures, we had 80s yesterday. sk has been replaced by clouds and cooler temperatures and some drizzle. this is kind of a ho-hum system. it's not doing much. in fact, even some of the wettest locations are barely reporting anything. it will be cloudy and cooler. cazadero 17/100ths. mount st. helena 1600.

after it tails off. .04 in mill valley. ben lomond, .01. we still have a little bit of shower activity going on. sonoma looks like up to glen ellen, yountville, napa and right back over to novato. maybe drift or drizzle. mill valley back down to muir beach and tiburon over to richmond. around daly city, pacifica had rain. san francisco picked up a little bit. this is a very weak system. 60s on the temperatures. temperatures have come down. some of the lows are in the 60s. so we're not traveling very far. even though we had a little bit of sun. you can see our weak front right there. there is a stronger component of this system but that's swinging into the north. if you are up to mendocino county, there's things lighting up. mendocino county up to crescent city about .25 to an inch plus. this is cooler air coming in.

once our front goes through, we might get late clearing. i think you will notice the temperatures coming in, cooler temperatures coming in. most 15, gusts to 22. that's a cooler direction. so the temperatures have come way down from sunday. water temperatures are warm. monterey, 65. san francisco buoy, 62. bodega bay buoy, 63. these have gone up since this morning. 72 reno and 61 in tahoe. they are getting a south breeze. ukiah, 63. our system will give us a lot of cloud cover and not much else. then we'll get clearing late behind that if you are far enough north you might get shower activity. it will be a misty drizzly day around the bay. the key we'll get a break on tuesday wednesday and probably most of thursday. cloudy, cooler. there are signs of a stronger system coming in friday. right now, it looks like it will come in friday night. game three will be here. we're doing our best to hold this off. there is a lot of energy coming off the pacific. drizzle or light rain.

it's a relatively quiet trading day on wall street after last week's wild ride that saw the dow swing. investors still remain concerned about the economic weakness in europe that could spread to the u.s. ibm, though, is the biggest drag on the dow down 7.4% after reportings earnings that missed expectations, also selling their chip division. the dow is down 13. the nasdaq, though, is up as well as the s&p. government safety officials a nounsed a major recall of almost 5 million vehicles due
