tomorrow will either be the examples -- the champs or going on to a decisive game seven. either way the city says it'll be ready. the distance to giants fans made no difference. since it's a clenching game on the road major league baseball has given the go ahead to a public viewing yet again this year. >> these events are great. >> reporter: police will enforce an alcohol ban in the plaza. >> we had some clean up afterward sure. we always do but people really behaved and we expect that again. >> reporter: but people did not behave as the night went on. bonfires and smashed store fronts also left a giant mess in the mission. >> let's not do that. >> reporter: chief greg suhr a lifelong giant fan says many

start tomorrow. you know, you can't beat it. >> reporter: in known trouble spots the city will be proactive picking up trash early so cans aren't torched and swapping electric muni buses for gas so they're not easy targets. the fish concert though will get out after 11:00, long after the game is presumably over. reporting live in san francisco, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. the giants players got an enthusiastic send off today. that's hunter pence getting ready to head to kansas city and that's madison baumgartner who beat the royals last night when he pitched a complete game shut out. he was on fire. fans cheered the team buses as they rolled out and headed for sfo. the pitching match up for game six is a repeat of game two. it'll be veteran jake peavy for

the giants against urudano ventura for kansas city. peavy was banged up in game two. peavy says he is determined to make sure that doesn't happen again. the giants arrived in kansas city early and had a chance for practice. >> reporter: there's bruce bochy pushing all the right buttons and that magic, that aura that seems to envelope this team every year in october. they will put that aura on the field again. today a light warm up at kauffman stadium. the guy primarily responsible for the well being of this team hunter pence who happens to be

hitting .474. and there's plenty to going right for the team but if you ask any of his teammates, he will say hunter pence is in the middle of it all. >> he inspires and motivates. he goes out and works his tail off. to have him on our side has been incredible and inspirational. >> the guys look up to him. he is not only a ballplayer but on the field he does what he does. he backs it up. he backs up what he talks about. he is passionate on the clubhouse and the field. younger guys definitely look up to him. >> reporter: i asked pence hunter and he politely declined

the interview. saying it was not a game day. really understanding the magnitude of this situation. they won't admit it but they are very well aware that they're one game away from a slice of history. a third title in five years. >> the game is tomorrow at 5:07. where do you think the players are tonight? are they in their hotel and what are the plans for tomorrow. >> reporter: we hope that they're snug in their beds. the keyword is routine. the royals flew last night. but not the giants, they slept at home. got up comfortably and came in for practice. if we know one thing about baseball players they're superstitious. they love their routine, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

forecast looks great at kauffman stadium. temperature pet, -- temperatures are perfect. no cloud cover. perfect conditions for the game. but just know as the game goes on, temperatures will probably drop into the 50s. good news on the forecast front. hope we won't have to forecast for game seven. the giants success this postseason has brought in a lot of money as you might imagine. even with the giants back on the road they expect the sales to continue. amber lee is in san francisco after talking to a lot of merchants who say all of this orange and black has brought them a lot of green, amber. >> reporter: frank, baseball is a game of stats and some merchants say that the giants success has meant record setting sales and they're ready for more. >> we have the go giants one. they change from san francisco to go giants.

and we have pumpkin spice ones. >> reporter: the sweet smell of baked goods at the house of bagels plays into the superstition of baseball. the giants loss on friday brought in customers. >> a lot of people were coming in and they were grabbing like all our giants cookies and the bagels hoping that it would bring them some luck for the giants some where in the next game. >> reporter: it appears it worked with back to back wins this weekend. orange and black sweet treats are on their own winning treat. they're among the best sellers. and tomorrow. >> it's going to be crazy. i don't know if people are going to come here. but the day after, when you're hung over you're going to be here getting the bagels for sure. >> reporter: a novelty store in the tenderloin store, the team's success combined with halloween means a 20% increase. a wall of giants themed items now down to a stand. >> everybody comes in before the game, wants a bunch of

balloons or merchandise or hats to wear, very last minute. >> it's been electrifying every day in here. >> reporter: and record setting. balboa's general manager tell us there's been a number of patrons. to boost spirits it's offering its employees this baseball cap and its patrons rally rags to pay tributes to the giants. >> we thought we would be seeing numbers similar to the 2010 series and 2012 series, but we've been blowing them out of park. >> reporter: blowing them out of park is what they hope the giants will be doing tomorrow. this is such a senseless act. >> the specific piece of evidence police are working to track down. more than $100,000 found right in the street. >> what in the world, this

new information tonight about the death of a high school sophomore in the south bay. the 15-year-old was riding his bike to school this morning like he did most every day. when he was hit by the back wheels of a big rig.

ktvu's maureen naylor is in cupertino with a key question that investigators want answered. >> reporter: it's really hit this community hard. in the last hour and a half we've watched a good 70 people come gather around this growing memorial of candles and flowers. tonight we hear from several sources it appears the truck should never have been on this road. >> reporter: a grief stricken mother tonight buried her face in her hands as more than 50 people gathered for an impromptu memorial. >> we want to say thank you to all. >> reporter: the 15-year-old's father thanked the crowd. and students shed tears in their grief. >> we're all taking a moment to take in what happened. >> reporter: earlier today, the

father wept as they brought flowers. investigators say the big rig truck was stopped at a red light, the boy with his helmet on next to him when he somehow got entangled in the rear of the truck. this classmate says his friends saw it. >> he said it was scary. >> normally it feels pretty safe. but on wednesday. the garbage trucks got pretty close to the lanes. >> before today i felt safe. but now i'm probably very scared to do so. >> reporter: his father plans to drive him to school for the next few days. >> i don't know if it's really needed or necessary to have trucks go by on this road. >> reporter: sources tell ktvu based on its size this truck should not have been on this

road and a violation. requiring larger trucks to have a permit and only operate 9:30 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon. >> reporter: here live people are still lighting candles at this hour. they want to know did the teenager's bike veer into the big rig or did the truck veer into the bike lane. meanwhile the school tells us they plan to increase counseling on campus for both students and staff tomorrow. live tonightin cupertino, maureen naylor. a study out today show it is people killed on bikes increased by 15% between 2010 and 2012. california had the highest number with 338 deaths during that period. most of the deaths across the country involved adult males in urban environments. police in newark are trying to determine what happened to a man who was found dead inside a

busy road. passers by reported finding the man's body at around 1:30 around thornton avenue between gateway boulevard. homicide detectives were called to the scene and didn't reopen thornton road until about 6:00 tonight. police say they don't know how the man died and so far no word on his identity. the widow of one of the two sheriff's deputies shot and killed in northern california last friday is now speaking out about the loss of her husband. susan oliver says her husband was dedicated to his job at the department. susan oliver recalls that her husband never said that he was afraid of dying. >> you always have to have a

little fear otherwise you're not going to see the things that are around you. >>oliver had a nickname, teddy bear. it was actually given to him by the daughter of a drug suspect that he arrested. members of the san francisco sheriff's department. as ktvu's david stevenson reports, it comes at the wake of a woman's disappearance and death at the san francisco general hospital. >> reporter: a sheriffs department staffer has lost their job. two have been suspended and five others are facing disciplinary action. >> very difficult task. it was a very big investigation. >> reporter: spalding disappeared for 17 days after entering the hospital for treatment of an infection.

her death sparked multiple investigations. focusing on failures of communication between the hospital and sheriff's deputies providing security and the half hazard search for the woman. >> the san francisco's sheriff department seems to have just realized what every thinking person knew a year ago. they were imcompetent, they were callus and they were deceitful. >> reporter: ktvu has learned fired employee was a dispatcher who has chosen not to appeal. >> we have developed a six week training program. specifically for all staff assigned to the hospital. >> reporter: the sheriff's department says it's made significant reforms in the past year with new policies covering stairwell patrols, dispatch. a spokesman for the spalding

family says they're still trying to get over the death. five additional staffers are likely to face suspension as well rather than termination in their disciplinary hearings. spalding's family has filed a lawsuit against the county. san jose police are asking for the public's help in finding a missing woman. investigators say 39-year-old melly aguilar santoyo hernandez was last seen at the metro pcs store at about 7:00. her park was found in the parking lot. she is described as 5'5" tall, 175 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. recycling workers were walking a picket line today in san leandro. dozens of workers were up early this morning chanting and carrying picket signs to protest what they claim is

retaliation by a manager. 130 union workers went on strike last friday. the union says it's filed a complaint with the labors relation board. they're asking management to sit down and get the differences resolved. we're tracking weather headed our way but not right away. as we go through the week this weather system is going to push in over the top of us. already bringing the rain up to the portland area. outside we basically got a few clouds out there now. the clouds are kind of moving out of the area. there's going to be cool temperatures overnight. and those temperatures are really going to start to drop down. we're going to see overnight lows tonight getting down into the upper 30s in the coolest spots. up in santa rosa we're going to easily see temperatures up in the 37 degrees. redwood city we could see temperatures in the 40s. a very cold overnight. as this system drops down, it's going to show up thursday night into friday. it's going to move in and

an emotional farewell, tears, prayers and hugs of solidarity in remembrance of a teenager who's life was killed. he was struck right outside his fraternity house. ktvu's christien kafton is telling us what friends are doing to try to cope and what police are saying about the alleged drunk driver. >> reporter: lam a san jose state senior was set to graduate this spring with a degree in computer science. friends say he was the victim of a hit-and-run collision. the victim was hit at 1:00 sunday morning by an alleged drunk driver who sped away at the scene. pam tiari was asleep in her car just a couple of feet away. >> we heard a thump. i said open the door and see if somebody got hit. he goes, there's someone on the ground i said please just go check. >> reporter: liam suffered

serious head injuries. the suspect took off only to crash again a few blocks away. when police arrived at the scene of that second ambulance. the driver walked out of his apartment and turned himself in. witnesses say they can't believe anyone would leave the scene. >> i don't understand it. why would you drive off if you know you hurt someone. >> reporter: on campus, members of lam's fraternity have channeled their emergency to sell ribbons and set up a go fund me page online. the money will go to lam's family. while they will have a daily reminder of the accident outside of their door they prefer to think of lam for how he embraced life. >> tonight it's just having a prayer. and just always remembering him for who he was. for what he did. >> reporter: late this afternoon, san jose police

identified the driver they say was involved at 22-year-old solomon freese. they say he has been arrested on felony charges. investigators said they learned that a 15-year-old boy texted classmates to meet them before he opened fire. jaylin fry eburg texted 10 other students to meet him in the class cafeteria including two of his cousins. fryeburg then shot them with a 40 caliber shotgun which he somehow got from a relative. >> this is confirm had the the five sre -- five victims were at the table. >> reporter: two of his victims both 14-year-old girls have died. the three others remain in the hospital including both cousins. the motive isn't clear all those some students said he had

a fight with one of the cousins over one of the girls. fryeburg had been a popular student, even being named homecoming prince. police are now asking people to be vigilant as the holiday season approaches and to make sure that valuables are kept out of sight. a plea for information after a mother of four young children is shot and killed in what police say is a case of road rage. the increased reward that's now being offered. >> this is about making our community safer. >> this initiative is not offender based. it is offense based. >> dualing views on california's prop 47. why some say it's time to rewrite the state's sentencing rules. >> and a reminder you can get

there are new developments tonight regarding the handling of the ebola virus in the united states. the cdc has announced new guidelines that fall short of imposing mandatory quarantines on people returning from west africa. but several governors say the federal guidelines don't go far enough. and they're now taking their own action. ktvu -- ktvu's jana katsuyama here

with the different measures. >> reporter: casey hicocks was allowed to go maine today for quarantine at her home. she had returned from sierra leone just as chris christie declared mandatory quarantines for health department workers deemed high risk because of contact with ebola patients. >> i'm not going to step away for a minute from protecting my residents. >> i feel like my basic human rights have been violated. >> reporter: new guidelines would require people being high risk to have an inperson check up and avoid -- avoidance of public transportation. adding to the confusion, the u.s. army has ordered mandatory quarantines for soldiers returning from ebola fighting missions in west

africa. the joints chiefs of staff requested the defense secretary expand monitoring to all u.s. troops returning home. >> i don't think there's any correct way to do this. this is not surprising that you have all these different agencies coming up with different recommendations. everyone should recognize that we're still learning a lot about this disease and how it's transmitted. >> reporter: dr. riley says the cdc can only issue guidelines and does not have the authority to impose quarantines. that falls to each state's political leaders until there's more clarity on how to prevent ebola transmissions, you could see more governors taking action in the next few days. >> how about california? any quarantines here. >> reporter: governor brown says he will instruct state officials to follow those cdc guidelines. >>jana, thank you. now to election 2014 and

the race for governor. voters will cast their ballots next tuesday. the latest poll shows jerry brown holding a 16 point lead over his republican challenger neil kashkari. brown is spending his campaign cash on ads for propositions one and two. the $7.5 million water bond and state rainy day fund rather than his reelection bid. he joked that after three terms he's still figuring out sacramento. >> actually you know, i still think there's a lot to learn. any way -- >> that's why we're sending you back. >> all right, thank you. >> republican neil kashkari reportedly has about $1 million left. and he plans to roll out an ad before next week's election. two well known media mines

spoke out today. ktvu's cara liu is in san francisco with arguments both for and against, cara. >> reporter: it was an inconventional backdrop tonight here at a local bar. a few dozen in attendance here on a monday night. carington's bar and grill was chosen as the location for a bill. jeff adachi supports it. >> we're spending more money on corrections than we are higher education in california. >> reporter: steve wagstaffe argued against it. >> one of the other big problems for me is this initiative is not offender based. it is offense based. >> reporter: known as the safe neighborhoods and schools act, prop 47 would make certain drug and property crimes such as drug possession, shoplifting and check forgery misdemeanors.

to be charged as a misdemeanor. >> reporter: both debaters say they took part in hopes of better educating voters when they head to the poll one week from tomorrow. cara liu, ktvu news. we're getting a progress return on new marijuana laws that went into effect saturday night. just two have received the necessary certificate to continue operating. 14 more collectives have one of the two certificates and 36 others are still in the process of getting them. san jose is now requiring each collective to grow its own marijuana off sight. the deadline for applications has passed. after a couple of weeks of volatilely we saw a relatively quiet day on wall street. the dow edged up 12 points. the nasdaq added two. global economic weakness and a drop in oil prices held the marks in check. the federal reserve by the way begins a two day meeting tomorrow. shares of san francisco

propaganda video of a british journalist they're holding hostage. the video portraying him as a reporter and describes how isis is now in control of the city of kobani. a flight from los angeles to london was practiced last month after a wifi triggered a scare at l.a.x. passengers had already boarded the plane when they found a device signed in as al-qaida terror with misspellings. >> they first reported it as

engine trouble. consumer reports has released its annual report on which car should go the distance and which may not. the magazine says this year its noticing a lot of trouble with electronics as auto makers are loading their cars with touch screens and blue tooth communications. the most reliable brands are all japanese. lexus came in first for the second year in a row followed by toyota, it's parent company. mazda was third and honda first. the number one most reliable car is the zion xb. zion is owned by toyota. today mayor lee signed a legislation that allows house sharing known as air bnb. and protesters showed up and

family and friends say it was a senseless act.

a young mother of four shot and killed in oakland while she and her husband were driving home from the grocery store to watch the raiders game with their family yesterday. tonight her family is absolutely devastated and asking for the public's help to find the shooter. allie rasmus tells us the reward in the case has just been increased. >> reporter: through their inconsolable grief, the parents of perla asked for help. if they know the person who did this her mother says please turn him in. turn him into police, please, please help us she said. they know nothing will bring their beloved daughter back but they are desperate for justice after the mother of four was killedded in a -- killed in a road rage incident. police won't explain exactly what happened on the road but some kind of confrontation occurred as the couple was driving on 90. someone in another car pulled

up alongside her black camry and fired several shots into the car, perla was killed. >> this is such a senseless act. this is a mother of four. shining spirit, she was always positive. always had a smile on her face. >> reporter: while she loved her work, her colleagues say avina's favorite job was being a degrees voted mom to her four kids. the oldest is 14. the youngest 2-1/2 years old. >> one of her savings was the most precious jewels you will ever have around your neck are your children. >> reporter: police are asking businesses on the street to check their surveillance video. >> your surveillance video may have caught the before, during or after that may show the

deposit bags that were filled with cash. the money was then returned to the rightful owner who says the money was his life savings. a lava flow is picking up speed on the big island of hawaii. that is the sound of lava burning grass and brush as it moves closer to homes in a small town. there's no stopping it and officials are making arrangements now to make homeowners watch the destruction of their homes to give them a sense of closure. this lava flow from the volcano opened in june. it's moving at about 10 yards an hour. california's fifth largest reservoir is so dried up, new melones lake is revealing its past. some ruins of old melones are now visible. thanks to the drought it's now at 20% capacity. the lowest its been in two

decades. a little bit of rain in the five day forecast. that might help out in the reservoirs but for now we're staying dry. certainly tomorrow. these were the highs from today. your high temperatures today were not bad. but they're going to be warmer tomorrow and the next couple of days. instead of low 70s like these we're going to be looking at temperatures in the mid-70s and upper 70s as we heard toward the middle of the week here. so here's some moisture. this is the hurricane ana which is falling apart. but that moisture streaming into the pacific northwest and should by the end of the week bring us a slight chance for a few showers. we're not seeing any fog along the coast here that's good. typical for october isn't it. . this is the time of year when the wind die down. -- when the winds die down. when the winds die down

temperatures really drop off. upper 30s and low 40s. that's not freezing but 38 degrees in napa you get out toward san helena you're going to dig up a 36-degree reading maybe. that's pretty cold and that may get you a little frost. these north bay valleys and inland bay valleys, concord 37. but you get over here in voraba and you get 42. high pressure staying with us tuesday, wednesday and thursday. the pattern we had today. the weather pattern, cool mornings, mild afternoons. and this advertised system moves in. not up like what we saw last weekend. just a few days ago as that system moves in. we're looking for rain into friday afternoon. could have an impact on trick or treaters as it stands now looks like it's going to be very light which is unfortunate for us. we need for rain. but the timing like this is going to change. here comes the system.
