on the cool side but not very cold. there is absolutely nothing heading in our direction that will say rain. it's all high pressure. i think we will get a little offshore breeze as well. it's mainly a friday event. 60s a little closer to the beaches. now sal, we've been watching this fog dance around. any reports? things are improving this some areas and getting worse in others. we are all getting tweets about it. obviously we will be watching for it. just remember you might encounter fog. let's take a look at carquinez bridge. it's much better fog wise. it's taking 18 minutes. if you are driving out to the mccarthur maze.

if you are driving on the marin county commute, it looks good. no slow traffic to speak of. let's go back to the desk. >> all right, thank you sal. concerns over plans to expand the landfill. the smell is already overwhelming. they can't imagine it getting worse. it's that odor that has them so angry. last night at a meeting announced plans to expand. the company wants to increase the height of the landfill from 150 to 245 feet and increase cubic capacity by 15 million cubic yards.

>> it's unfortunate we've been singled out. there are multiple sources around here. >> republic services which operates the landfill says it is in full compliance with the daily cover and odor misting systems. it says that there is no correlation between smell and vertical expansion but neighbors say that is not true. and they'd like to see the fill gone all together because they say it is hurting their quality of life. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. how close are you? can you smell it? >> reporter: yeah. it's easier around the nose because the fog is keeping it down. it is just really dark outside. it's over where those lights are. we drove about a half a mile, a

mile down the road. it happened at 5:30 on northbound 680. the chp says the van and another car may have collided and the driver of the van tried to swerve but hit the chp officer who was in the car pool lane. the crash shut down lanes for several hours. at one point traffic was backed up all the way to the 580 interchange. >> i had to get off the freeway. wanted to get food. hopefully would die down. >> the chp officer was air lifted to a trauma center. he is expected to survive. happening right now needy south bay families are waiting in line. they are camped out ready to sign up for special help for

this holiday season. the demand for help this year keeps growing. good morning, dave. we have been talking to these people. these are mothers and fathers. each of them have their own stories. and they are struggling. some of them have jobs but it's still not enough. they are waiting to register for holiday food boxes. the first person lined up at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the charity is helping 4,000 families for thanksgiving 2100 for christmas. but they have to register to receive those items. that is why they are outside in the cold. we have seen many children out here waiting. their parents say it's a sacrifice but receiving the help is worth it. we spoke to one father that has a wife and six children

including a newborn. >> i have faith in god it's worth it. it's worth it because i know there is precious hearts at home. >> reporter: sacred heart needs thousands of turkeys and only have one right how. they need food and toy donation. but they are also accepting money as well. they have been helping families for 50 years. workers say even though the economy has improved, there is such an economic divide in the bay area and those low wage earners are not able to keep up with the bills ape every day needs. if you'd like to help, you can come down here on south first street. san jose city councilman

sam liccardo is moving close to victory. his opponent supervisor dave cortese could concede today. the latest election numbers show liccardo has 51.5% of the vote. cortese has 48.5%. liccardo's lead has grown slightly over the two-point lead he's held since the first results were released on election night. his come back chances continue to dwindle with fewer and fewer ballots left to count. time is 6:08. the head of information technology for santa claire ram county elections office abruptly resigned the day before election day. the mercury news reports it's still not clear whether it chief joseph's surprise resignation had any impact on the vote counting. santa clara county was one of the slowest in the whole state in posting election returns. there is no word why he decided

to quit. a soccer mom is staging a sit in at an athletic field. she wants to stop or slow down the renovation of the athletic fields. san francisco voters cast their ballots on a measure that includes replacing grass fields with artificial turf but mccow and other opponents say all of the votes have not been counted yet. >> the contractors have jumped the gun. they have already fell 12 mature trees and ripping out the turf. >> the latest election totals show the athletic field measure has a 10% lead. san francisco's reck and park department went ahead and started the renovations because it is confident the measure will pass. police in vallejo arrested a man and woman suspected of 19 commercial burglaries around the bay area.

down. an investigation continues today at that crash site. a terrifying emergency landing at an airport in canada and it was captured on camera. take a look. you can see sparks flying. this is an air canada jet touching down on the runway last night. 75 people were on board. the flight was going from calgary and had to make this emergency landing. three passengers were treated for minor injuries. the pilot reported some kind of mechanical problem moments before that emergency landing. a san diego man is facing charges for stealing life vests from a southwest airlines plane. according to police, a rue member noticed benjamin taking life vests from under his seat and stuffing them in his bag. he told them this is not the first time he has taken the flotation devices. >> he admitted he took them as a prank or prank gifts.

east. it does creep around for a little bit. some areas clear. a little haze around the edges. some locations are really socked in. thick fog out there. it's a shallow fog bank. so it's coast bay and inland. it will burn off. 50s on the temps or 40s. even menlo park is at 50. on monday we had 30s and 40s. those are long gone. after today's fog and that is really all we have to talk about it will be warmer weekend. thick morning fog. cooler by the coast. a lot of 70s inland. 60s around the bay. sal, getting some great pictures on twitter and information coming in on that fog. from half hour to half hour it moves around.

and bailey road has reopened. a lot of people were stuck in traffic because it was closed. they were fixing a power pole in that area. but this morning bailey road has resoaped in the -- has reopened in the area. we have a crash reported southbound 880. an overturned jeep on its roof. oakland fire department are responding. southbound 880. witness said the person in the jeep managed to get himself out of the vehicle. but again it's right here. southbound 880. we will watch a backup build for this commute because the emergency vehicles are on the way. this is a look at the toll plaza. traffic is backing up for a 25 minute delay. if you are driving in contra costa county, so far slow traffic. let's go back to the desk. all right, sal. in the south bay people are complaining this morning about a smell they call unbearable.

together. this morning a man who was shot by san francisco police is in the hospital in critical condition. just before 8:00 last night, three officers patrolling the potrero hill neighborhood say they saw five men. four of the men ran away. police say the one man who remained pulled out a gun. and police say he refused an order to drop his weapon forcing the police to shoot. >> fordered the suspect to drop his firearm and he has now come plied. striking that suspect at one time in the upper body. >> police say the man who was shot had been involved in a drug related case just last month and he had drugs on him last night. the four other men were detained and questioned by police. police chief greg suhr will hold a community meeting about that shooting on monday night. also happening today, city

leaders from san antonio are here in the bay area. they will make a sales pitch to try to lure the silver and black to texas. alex savidge is at raiders headquarters in alameda with more on today's critical meeting. alex. >> reporter: as these talks heat up, fans are hoping the raiders will stay put here in the east bay. we do know civic leaders from san antonio will be sitting down to meet face to face with the raiders owner later on today here in the bay area and the discussion about possibly moving the team to texas is getting more and more serious with the raiders lease at the coliseum set to expire after this year. now this will be the second such meeting between the two sides. back in july raiders owner mark davis visited san antonio and met with city official there is. according to the san antonio express news, the raiders have determined the alamo dome is an

nfl ready facility. but the group save oakland sports wants the raiders owner to remember with all of this talk about relocation, they want the team to remember the dedicated fan base here in the east bay. >> i think the raiders probably have the great estefan base in all of sports. the raiders haven't had a winning season in 11 years. there has been right or wrong, almost constant uncertainly about the team's future. despite that we are still selling out. >> reporter: there is an important connection that could come into play here. the raiders owner is friends with former san antonio mayor henry cisneros. and he is the man spear heading this effort to lure the raiders away from oakland. according to one report, cyst anywhere row -- cisneros

happening right now parents hoping to bring some joy to their children this holiday season are camped outside a south bay charity. they are waiting in line many since yesterday to sign up for an annual holiday giveaway. janine de la vega is out there with them in san jose where the registration line continues to grow. janine. >> reporter: yeah now it's up to about 200 people. and the first person lined up at 4:00 yesterday afternoon here outside sacred heart community service in san jose. that is the earliest anyone has lined up. take a look at everybody here. most of them camped out over night. you can see everybody is now awake. there were kids here with sleeping bags so workers here that this all just speaks to the need. the charity is helping 4,000

families for thanksgiving and 3200 for christmas. they have to register to receive those items. that is why they were outside here until the cold huddled together in blankets. sacred heart showed us their refrigerator. it's pretty empty. >> we need 7,000 turkeys and pop top cans. we need nonperishable food. we need toys for the kids. we need 16,000 toys. we need all kinds of things and will there are a lot of ways to help. >> my younger ones are easier to shop for. it makes it hard. anything helps right now. >> many of the people lined up have a member.

welcome back to the morning news. today president obama meets at the white house with congressional leaders from both parties. this after republicans won control of the senate in tuesday's election. now president obama has said he wants to find areas where they can compromise but yesterday house speaker john boehner warned the president he could burn himself with republicans if he takes executive action on immigration reform bypassing congress. a member of the navy seal team 6 is going public saying he's the person that shot and killed osama bin laden. the washington post identifies him as 38-year-old now retired from the navy. this is video showing o'niell at a charity dinner. now he tells the post that he decided to go public because he thought others were about to reveal his identity. his actions don't sit well with other navy seals. >> there was a day in age where the silent professional was the person who did the job and

didn't look for the glory. now what you have is classified information being used for power by politicians and money by some of the guys that have gone and done this. >> the head of the seal command recently reminded seals if they break their code of silence, there could be legal consequences. foxes news channel is planning a two-part interview with o'niell next week. a woman accused of stealing highway patrol car while she was handcuffed. she was handcuffed, put into a chp suv and while the officer went back to check the stolen car, the woman slipped the handcuffs to the front of her body, hopped over the seat, and drove off in the chp car. other officers in san diego police chased the woman from the freeway to city streets where she crashed into several cars and was arrested. pedestrian and bike safety

advocates will hold a rally in san francisco remembering people who have been killed on city streets. the most recent death happened yesterday morning. on lombard and vanness avenues. today the coalition will ask city leaders to speed up the pace of street safety improvements. and part will be paid for from funds from propositions a and b which voters passed this week. if you drive across the golden gate bridge this weekend, expect delays. starting tonight there will be rotating lane closures in both directions just north of the bridge. the closures are expected on and off until sunday morning. the crews are closing the lanes as they get ready to install removable median barrier on the bridge. it's scheduled to be installed in january. and happening today are you ready? the first tahoe ski resort is

opening for the season. they will open from 9:00 this morning until 9:00 tonight. the mountain will only have one run open but the resort says the new snow over the halloween weekend and their snow making operations made it possible for them to be the first to open this season. but the way steve is talking about the weather, i don't know if they will be able to stay open. we'll see. coming up on mornings on 2 some out of towners are here in the bay area for a meeting and this may determine the future of the oakland raiders. >> oakland's mayor elect is vow to keep the pro team sport here in town. it's estimated that 30% of the traffic in a city is caused by people looking for parking. that's remarkable that so much energy is, is wasted.
