heavy equipment gets to work tonight at the golden gate bridge. literally paving the way for an addition that's been decades in the making. good evening i'm gasia mikaelian in tonight for julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. weekend construction under way right now at the golden gate bridge. debora villalon live at the marin at the golden gate bridge for what people can expect now and into the future. >> reporter: it's a construction zone now at the marin side. one, sometimes two lanes will be closed in one direction to

give workers space. but the pay off comes later when a median barrier finally comes to the golden gate. it's always been one of the more unique and dangerous aspects of the bridge, oncoming cars whisk by with inches between them. no room for error. plastic pylons soon to be replaced by a movable barrier. a foot across each section over 1,000 pounds. production against a driver who drifts or is distracted. >> for people to look around. i think it's a good idea. >> reporter: flexibility for

commute. >> a tall and safer median. on the san francisco on the bridge also had a history of head on crashes. >> it should have been a long time ago. >> reporter: some drivers wonder why with almost 40 people killed in crashes, a barrier took so long. but the iconic bridge doesn't rush into change and it took time for the will, the money and engineering to merge. >> i'm always in the center lane. i want to get there. i want to get fast. >> reporter: some bridge commuters awaiting the barrier will stay in what's called the suicide lane. even seeing its risk. >> all they had to do is take a child or check something that fell off their seat and they would be lost. >> reporter: the district hasn 't said what forced the barrier will with stand but it will take about 45 minutes to make its way across shifting across the lane. >> you have to weigh the inconvenience to life or death.

so guess what, give me the inconvenience because the life is more valuable. >> reporter: we're back live now at the construction. expect possible delays on the wall this weekend. the golden gate bridge closes completely for the first time for construction. reporting live at vista point, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. more details on that now, concerning the installation phase of the barrier. the golden gate will be closed to all vehicles for two days. that's scheduled to happen on january 10 and january 11th. however the sidewalks on the bridge will remain open while that barrier is installed. b.a.r.t. has announced that its long awaited connector between the coliseum station and the oakland airport will be up and

running. trains arrive every 10 minutes and riders can use a b.a.r.t. ticket or ticker card to pay. he held out hope for three days but tonight kann conceded to honda. honda is headed back to washington now for an eighth term. honda declared victory this morning then at an event tonight, khaana congratulated honda and thanked his staff. he also thanked the district's voters, he called them fair. >> i think this is a place that i meet people who voted for me, who voted for mike honda and i want folks to come together. >> despite these developments, workers are still counting

votes. mike honda has 3,300 more votes than khanna. santa clara was slow to process ballots on election night in fact, it may have been the slowest county in the entire state. it also turns out that a long time it manager quit on november 3rd the day before the election. a spokeswoman at the registrar's office say -- there's new information tonight about robin williams suicide. there was no alcohol in his system when he committed suicide and no illegal drugs. but the corner's report does reenforce suggestions that robin williams was suffering from severe depression. ktvu's cristina rendon live in millvalely where cristina you spoke with a friend of williams.

>> reporter: yeah, well first though, this is a copy of that coroner's report. it talks about his behavior and said he only had typical amounts of prescribed drugs in his system. it's been three months since the world lost robin williams. but his memory lives on in the hearts of fans, friends and loved ones. comedian mark pitta knew robin well and hung out with him regularly. >> when people light a candle for robin, i say light one of those candles that blow out and come back because to me he's an eternal flame. >> reporter: there was no indication from cell phone records or e-mails that he was suicidal. williams died of asphyxiation he was also suffering from

anxiety, paranoia. his wife also saw him on his i pad and told authorities she thought that was a good sign because williams had not watched tv or read anything in about six months. before his body was removed from the house, williams wife asked to pray over his body. >> one of the things that seems to help people with depression is to talk to someone who will listen to them. >> reporter: myers the executive director of san francisco depression says pain caused from depression is crippling but there's help. >> someone who has gotten through this pain is a person who can save another person. and that is very invaluable. >> reporter: pitta hopes the foundation can be accomplished in williams name to help those struggling with depression. >> that would be a great way to keep things going and remind people that yeah we can talk about this, i know it's taboo,

get a breath of fresh air and we'll see him soon. >> he was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. we're learning more tonight about a government crack down on illegal drugs and other contraband. federal authorities say they shut down thousands of sites when they shut down silk road 2.0. he now faces the possibility of life in prison. a new version claiming to be silk road 3.0 has already surfaced. the california attorney general has gotten involved in the questionable relationship between regulators at the california public utilities

commission and pg & e. agents working for state attorney general camela harris served warrants. >> and as a top cop in the state of california takes this issue seriously. >> investigators are looking into whether any laws were broken when the cpuc assigned a judge to a rate set in case. e-mails already released by pg & e revealed back channel communication with regulators and suggest pg & e was judge shopping. the future of the oakland raiders is up for discussion. today representatives from san san antonio reportedly met with team management here in the bay area to try to convince them to move to texas. john sasaki talked to oakland's new mayor elect and gives us

they brought in big machines because they have to go 8'down to get to the pipeline. this was cause when a construction crew hit the line today. today a pg & e spokeswoman tells me they're inn -- investigating whether the construction company called before they started digging. >> the street has been closed the whole day. so a lot of people were being turned back and they weren't able to come to the restaurant. >> reporter: around the corner other restaurants had to shut down. pg & e shut off service to 50 businesses. a danger people could hear and smell. >> i began to smell gas. quite noticeably. i don't smell very well so i really smelled gas. >> reporter: pg & e says a

construction crew was digging releasing flammable gas into the downtown business district for about six hours. fire and police crews evacuated the area forcing about 2,500 people to leave. thousands more had to shelter in place. pg & e had to reach two under ground valves. >> we don't have any complaints of injuries or potential gas inhalation. >> reporter: as crews work to repair the damage tonight, businesses in the area are suffering on what is usually a busy friday night. >> if it was a monday or tuesday night for a restaurant it might be a different story. but friday, saturday night i'm sure it's affecting the heck of them. >> they depend on the sharks team, on the weekend to be able to pay their bills and stay open. so this gas leak is affecting everybody. >> reporter: tonight pg & e is telling us they hope to have the gas fully restored and the streets reopened by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. some of the businesses said to me off camera and told some of

our crews that they are so angry about this they want a full investigation and they are considering some possibility of legal action against the construction company to recoop some of the losses they're suffering tonight. reporting live in san jose, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. police officers were out patrolling 11 schools in novato today after a threatening message online. there were several police cars outside novato high school and we're told half of the students went home early. late last night a parent alerted police to the threatening poston the social media site yikyak it has since been removed. today we talked to a mom who sent her kids to school even though she got too calls warning about the threat. >> i didn't tell the girls before they left school because i knew that the police were involved. and there was a really heavy police presence and they contacted all the right people in order to take care of the

children. >> reporter: detectives in novato are working with the social media site now to try to identify the person who made that post. now the the fight over berkeley's historic postoffice. it's now off the market at least for the time being. the city of berkeley has gotten a restraining order that prohibits the postal service from selling the building. the ruling means the postal service cannot sell the building until a full meeting is conducted december 10th. thousands of troops will be deploying to iraq. their mission to train forces to fight in their mission. >> reporter: the president approved the defense department request to send up to 1,500 additional u.s. troops to iraq. nearly doubling the amount of u.s. troops on the ground there currently at approximately 1,400 troops. the authorization will expand

the mission to train and assist iraqi security forces. 870 troops will train iraqi forces at four new sites. the rest will serve as advisors and force protection at new bases north of baghdad. admiral kirby explained why new troops are needed now. >> it's being done quite frankly because the iraqis have demonstrated the willingness and the skill to go after isil. so they reached a point where they need additional help and guidance. particularly in areas like ambar. >> reporter: the white house will seek $5.6 billion for congress for the iraq advising mission. general lloyd austin and defense secretary chuck hagel were invited to the white house if for lunch to brief a

bipartisan congressional group. he hinted at more troops last week. >> that's why we need to expand the train and assist mission. but the precondition for that is that the government of iraq is willing to arm the tribe. >> reporter: the pentagon reiterated that the u.s. troops will not be engaged in combat. at the pentagon, jennifer griffin, fox news. the labor department released a new job report. it shows unemployment is lower but left wall street mostly flat. nasdaq fell by six points. the labor report shows employered added 214,000 jobs in october. that sent the unemployment down to 1.8%. by compareson one year ago -- comparison one year ago, the number of hours worked is up. the bay area weather today looked like a typical summer

day out there. this was the scene looking out toward sutro tower at noon. as a result we have reduced visibility coast side especially down to monterey bay. i suspect over the next few hours this will gradually reform near the golden gate and near the bay itself first thing tomorrow morning. as far as current numbers out there we'll take a look at those. san jose 57 degrees. santa rosa cooling off to 53. napa 50 and san francisco downtown in the upper 50s. right now looking out toward the bay bridge we are in the clear. just partly crowd -- cloudy skies out there. fair skies this evening. it'll be a warmer weekend and look what happens next week. we will be talking about rain chances on the long range model maps. first thing tomorrow morning we'll be starts out the day. low to mid-30s in napa.

san jose 52 degrees. here's our forecast model, trying to generate some clouds. i think more fog hanging out near the golden gate bridge. partly cloudy skies at the coast. tomorrow will be warmer than today. coming up at 10:45, we will take a look at the forecast highs in your neighborhood. and we will highlight the one day we could be seeing rain chances here in the bay area. there's not a lot of real snow, but thanks to manmade snow ski lifts are open. this year marks a special anniversary for the donner pass ski area. this is its 50th season that it's been in operation. boreal marked the occasion by painting every 50th chair gold. they hope to stay open seven days a week right on through the end of the season. she says her heart has always been in oakland. >> i remember my mother

so it's supposed to be a safe place for kids to gather and have fun. a skate park in marin county is now padlocked just days after it opened and ktvu's rob roth tells us why. >> most residents seem to agree there isn't much to do in marin city and unincorporated community in sausalito especially for kids. >> most of the times it's boring because you can't really do anything. >> reporter: that's why many folks were excited about this new skate park in town. built by volunteers with almost

all the material donated. >> the skate park was really a good idea. bring some different type of culture of sports for them to do in the community. >> reporter: lovely day. >> reporter: the park had its grand opening last weekend. this is cell phone video of teenagers testing it out. but that was then, this is now. the skate park has been padlocked ever since. the park sits on marin housing authority land but will be run by the marin community city district. >> right now it's closed because liability hasn 't been worked out. sometimes it takes longer than we expect. >> reporter: that leaves young skate boarders caught in the middle. >> i think they should unlock it and let the skaters skate. do our own thing. >> reporter: those involved with the park say they expect to have the insurance issue resolved perhaps within a week. until then though, the skate park will remains closed. in marin city, rob roth, ktvu

channel 2 news. a motorcycle officer from its dublin office remains hospitalized. a car changing lanes hit car around 10:30. the veteran chp officer was not able to stop his motorcycle on time and slammed into the van. the officer suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover. union city police say they need your help finding an at risk man missing since yesterday morning. he's 18-year-old john alam. he was last seen in the parking lot of union city's city hall around 10:00 a.m. thursday. he is 5'10" tall, black hair, brown eyes and police says he suffers from down syndrome and does not communicate verbally. an unexpected downside to the 49ers move to santa clara. the reason why that move now has a local toy drive thousands of dollars short. up first, a candid

diamond district neighborhood. as a native of oakland, schaaf says she's ready to tackle the problems of oakland. >> there's more crime than it is now. but even back then, oakland had the reputation of being dangerous that's something i want to change. >> reporter: one thing schaaf wants, a safer city for all of the people of oakland. her and husband have two daughters , both of them attend the same schools she did. she was a cheer leader at skyline high then attended law school in northern california. but says her heart was always in oakland. she was district assistant to mayor brown. now she is met with hope for

officers up. she is hoping to focus on community solving policing. >> thank you amber. republicans typically don't win many elections in the bay area. a g.o.p. candidate won her race in the east bay. republican katherine baker has defeated democrat tim sbranti in their district. baker won by more than 4,000 votes. and the win is significant for another reason it means that republicans pick up an assembly seat and block the democrats from having a so called super majority. the gop also blocked a super majority in the state senate. >> the world changed 25 years ago this sunday on november 9, 1989 the berlin wall fell. to mark the anniversary white balloons now line the path where the wall stood.

is caused by people looking for parking. in a city that's remarkable that so much energy is, is wasted. streetline has looked at the problem of parking, which has not been looked at for the last 30, 40 years. we wanted to rethink that whole industry, so we go and put out these sensors in each parking spot and then there's a mesh network that takes this information, sends it over the internet so you can go find exactly where those open parking spots are.

all right take a close look at this, a bizarre site up on top of the tribune tower in downtown oakland today. that speck that you saw, that's a man who's job it is to replace the broken cable on the tower's flag pole. what we've done here is sped up the video a bit so you can see his movement. his name is steve gulick. he travels all over the country climbing towers and bridges. like father like son, he's now training his 14-year-old son to follow in the family trade. the dallas hospital that had the first ebola patient in the united states has ended its 21 day monitoring period without any further cases. he met amber vinson one of two nurses at the hospital who

contracted ebola. the former president gave her a peck on the cheek, a hug and then posed for pictures. the hospital has been monitoring 177 people and today they were all but declared ebola free. the white house says president obama will introduce her choice to replace attorney general eric holder tomorrow. lynch is known for prosecuting organized crime, terrorism, public corruption and police brutality cases. if confirmed she would be the first african american woman to be attorney general. holder is the first african american man in that post. lynch works for holder and the justice department but is not a member of the president's inner circle. an arrest has been made in connection with a mysterious case in los gatos that we've been following you for you today. it all started when an injured man showed up at drakes bay. the man was 34 years old and was takento the hospital. but exactly what happened is

still unclear. a resident called 911 to say that the injured man showed at his doorstep. but police have arrested the man who called police. they say 50-year-old mark laplant is being charged with several felonies including possession of a firearm and possession of marijuana for sale. a service dog is recovering at home in san francisco tonight after being found injureed in a dumpster. >> oh look at him. my baby. >> reporter: the little dog's named kaley was reunited with her owner. lucielle coleman williams had not seen her dog since october. she says that's when someone stole it out of her car. they reunited her with williams through her microchip. >> i was really happy. my baby was coming home.
