a major injury accident on the eastbound lanes of the bay bridge. i'm can wayne. >> hello, i am heather holmes. emergency vehicles and police are on the bridge right now. at nine dak 15, all eastbound lane shutdown temporarily to allow vehicles to get to the victims. according to the highway patrol, a car was going the wrong way without lights on. officers were responding to those calls, those reports when that car collided head-on with other vehicles. officials say at least seven people are injured. object three of them critically.

we have officer hill from the highway patrol. what can you tell us about the traffic situation and when the lanes might be reopened? >> we currently have the number one and number two lane's close. the three, for, and five lanes are open. unfortunately, there was a lot of debris, and we're still waiting for a sweeper truck to clear the lanes so that is safe for people to travel. we hope to get those lanes open within half an hour. at about 8:27, we had multiple reports of the wrong way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lane, interstate 80, on the bay bridge. we got several reports of multiple collisions as a result of that. we don't have information on injuries. several parties were transported to local trauma hospitals, including the suspect that was driving the wrong way. we're still developing that information, but we're getting the roadway open as soon as we can. >> officer hill, a question people want to know is how to does some one go the wrong way on the bridge?

>> there are several points where the on ramps and off ramps to interstate 80 are side- by-side where it's easy to get confused especially if you're under the influence. it is more common than you think for having wrong way driver's. the good thing about it is the majority of them pull over and stop when they realize their mistake. it is rare that they continue driving and cause this kind of situation. >> daniel hill give us -- giving us the latest condition on the bay bridge. hopefully all the lanes will be open within a half an hour. you can see some of the headlights are getting through heading from san francisco and oakland. it is getting through, but it is still very slow going for traffic in both directions on the bay bridge. will follow this throughout the newscasts and we will get updates as they come in.

back now with breaking news happening on the bay bridge. these are live pictures. it appears traffic in both directions is moving little bit better now. this follows a multivehicle crash involving a wrong way driver. eastbound traffic is moving little bit better as they had across into oakland. as you see, westbound traffic heading into the city. an awful lot of brake lights here. the chp telling us a few minutes ago that a driver was going the wrong way in the eastbound direction, slammed into several vehicles. at least seven people injured. we don't know the extent of their injuries. we will be following the situation, updating on facebook and twitter and right here on the air. the midterm election
