of new york city where two workers have just been rescued from scaffolding dangling from the nation's tallest building. the window ush -- washers were 69 stories up on the new world trade center. the port authority which owns the building says it appears a cable broke on of scaffolding. the brokers were stuck and dangling for more than an hour. they were tethered and communeny kay kateing -- and communicating with rescuers. they had to cut a hole in the glass windows to pull the workers to safety. we're learning new details about the investigation into a hit-and-run crash that killed a 14-year-old in the east bay. it happened last night on east 14th and ashland in san leandro. and that's where we find ktvu's mike mibach who talked to friends of the teen and has news about an important new discovery by police. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, toeshry. good news, chp confirming with us that it has found the car,

although it did not say where it was located. the bad news, the driver has not been found. what we found here at the intersection of east 14th and ashland, a balloon, teddy bears and flowers, a small group of friends, mourning the loss of someone they call their brother. >> ivan, he was a good kid. >> reporter: friends say he's 14-year-old ivan cruz. >> ivan was like my best friend. he was a brother to me. >> reporter: she's in stares, her dear friend no longer by her side. >> he was really funny. he would make me laugh when i was down. we would skate everywhere. i miss him. >> reporter: deputies say the teenager was struck and killed by a car in unincorp rampted san leandro after 6:00 last night. about three minutes earlier, deputies spotted the car driving recklessley, attempted a traffic spot. the car sped away about 40, 50 miles an hour driving in the

wrong direction. >> the deputy canceled the pursuant when he went into oncoming traffic. >> reporter: moments later, the day was truck. the collision was witnessed he said bay a second deputy who he says was not involved in the initial pursuit but who started up a second pursuit after the suspect drove abe way from the crash scene -- away from the crash scene. >> the pursuit was reengaged who saw the child get hit and he chased that car and uflt maltly he lost -- all maltly he lost it. >> reporter: and now friends of ivan are holding each other tight. >> someone you would never expect this to to happen to it happened to. >> reporter: friends plan to hold a vigil at the crash site at 6:00 tonight. there are counselors located at two schools, ivan's middle scho where he garage baited last year and -- garage waited last year and -- graduated high school and the latest on the investigation and the hunt for the driver of the vehicle, that's tonight at 5:00. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, mike.

contra costa sheriff avenue detectives are investigating an early-morning shooting that left one man dead. he was shot around 12:45 a.m. in the area of row day yoon the 200 block of vallejo avenue -- rodeo, the 200 block of vallejo avenue. investigators are trying to determine a motive of the killing. tonight at 5:00, a peace rally is scheduled to call for an end to violence in richmond. this after the city recorded eight shootings in the past week including the deadly shooting of 16-year-old rodney frazier. he was a varsity player at richmond high school. he was shot multiple times on froip night in front of his home. police say five of the people injured in the recent shootings were teenagers. today's vigil is being held by richmond high's basketball team at civic center plaza. rain moving into the bay area. not here yet. mark tamayo is tracking the wet

weather. >> still a few hours away. in fact, fairly nice afternoon out there. live camera looking out towards san francisco. some haze, some high clouds with partly to mostly cloudy skies. those clouds will lower and thicken up especially by late afternoon and into the evening hours. right now, on live stormtracker2, you can see the scattered showers up above us. the main cold front here in the pacific. here is a closer look at the sweeps, not showing much in the way. rainfall. here is the system i'm watching over 300 miles offshore has it does approach the coastline, we'll bump up the rain chances, especially for late this evening. here is our forecast model at 4:00, still keeping it dry. so the commute is dry at 4:00. then at 6:00, you can see activity approaching the shoreline, maybe a chance of a sprinkle up in the north bay. it looks like the best chance of showers developing between 9:00 and 10:00. but the main action moves in late tonight after 10:00 into early tomorrow morning. we could have wet roadways for the thursday morning commute.

coming up, we'll cycle through the remainder of our thursday and we're tracking the series of storms that could play a role from the forecast for next week. >> we'll check in with you then. thank you. this morning we showed up "mornings on 2" history in the making after a decade of space cafl. the craft and probe successfully landed on a comet. brian flores saw it first hand from the chabot space center. a lot of excitement there. >> reporter: there certainly was, tori. simply amazing the feat conquered today. >> we're on the comet. >> reporter: that was the announcement and celebration from the european space agency. and this was the reaction from the chabot space and science

senter. >> wonderful. amazing. i was really nervous, which i didn't expect. >> a little bit of doubt going in but it looks like everything worked out well. >> reporter: just after 8:00 this morning our time, the probe signaled it had landed safely onto a comet that's more than 300 million miles from earth. scientists say the spacecraft gathered its speed to reach the speed by doing a gravitational slingshot around the sun, earth and mars. it took ten years to reach the comet. but what concerned officials was traveling all of this distance and calculating landing the 220-pound probe. once the lander comes down when it first makes contact, the intent was the thrusters on top of the lander would kind of push it down. well, the thrusters are not working. they will have to reef lie on the other two -- rely on the other two systems, some harpoons. >> reporter: now that it's landed safely, scientists say the probe will use several on

board instruments, including a drill that can dig 9 inches into the comet service. the information will give scientists a better understanding of a chemical nature of the comet but provide a picture of the earth's past. >> we've found out the gas is composed of things like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, the stuff that smells like a rotten egg. so it's a smell yil comet. >> i thought it was cool how it was launching and made it right on time. >> reporter: apparently the probe knows how to tweet as well. it tweeted out that it landed safely but that the harpoons which helped anchor it didn't fire properly. according to the european space agency, they are looking at options at retiring them but it remains unclear if it will affect the mission moving forward. hopefully it will not. to make this happen, the comet was traveling at an estimated 36,000 miles per hour.

we're live here from the space and science center. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> pretty amazing stuff. thank you. a lake in san francisco's presidio is being filled with 50 gallons of poison today to get rid of invasive fish. it's happening at mountain lake. scientists say eliminating the fish will help restore the ecosystem there. the presidio trust group took photos of the fish that were dumped in the lake and then repopulate. they include catfish, carp, sturgeon, even goldfish. biologists have tried but failed to get rid of the fish without using poison. >> it's something that has to be done to eradicate the fish put in the lake that shouldn't be there, the little carp that were this big when they threw them in and are this big now and they are eating the vegetation. the ecology of the lake won't come back to where it should be. >> the biologists say a single carp can have 2 million eggs in

a seen son -- season. in the last hour, the incumbent mayor of alameda conceded to her opponent more than a week after voters went to polls. marie gilmore met with supporters and congratulated trish spencer who had a very slim lead in the race. >> this was an historically close race. probably about 100 vote difference. >> gilmore made history in 2010 when she became the first african-american to be elected mayor in alameda. traffic is flowing again in san ramon after an overturned big dig hauling frozen turkeys closed an offramp. the truck crashed around 2:30 when it failed to negotiate the turn on the alcosta boulevard offramp from southbound interstate 680. crews closed the exit so they could unload the turkeys. the exit reopened around 10:30 this morning, the driver of the truck had minor injuries.

this just in. new details on the search for a san francisco scoff mare engineer. family members issued a statement moments ago saying they believe a body found floating in the bay yesterday is that of dan ha. there's no official word yet from the coroner. but relatives say the clothes and the wallet look like ha's. they also say they do not think it was a suicide. he went missing on halloween night. he was a stanford graduate who worked at a startup called metro mile. in east san jose, a man -- a woman, rather, was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver. the woman was carrying clothes or laundry on south king road before 4:30 yesterday afternoon when she was hit. she died at the scene. the driver stopped and is now facing dui charges. this was the 21st pedestrian death in san jose this year. last year, 26 pedestrians or bicyclists died in san jose.

59-year-old jerry matheny. has been the man identified shot and killed by police in menlo park yesterday near middlefield and willow roads near the headquarters of sunset magazine. police found him burglarizing a building at an office park but when they tried to approach him, he ran. >> a foot pursuit ensued and one of the officers deployed his taser. at that time, an adult male suspect pulled a weapon. >> an officer then shot him. he was pronounced dead at the scene. still not clear if he ever fired his weapon. police in san mateo are warning about a dangerous e- mail falsely reporting a child predator in the neighborhood. investigators say if opened, the e-mail actually installs malway that steals user names, passwords and credit card information. according to police, the e-mail

claims to be announcing neighborhood safety information warning of a childhood predator that just moved your area. police say do not open the e- mail or click on any links related to it. for the second year in a row, the fbi is ranking oakland as the second most dangerous city in the country. this comes as the city managed to decrease the crime rate last year. the year-end stats show violent crime dropped 1%. the fbi says the decrease could be attributed to smaller districts in oakland. detroit dedetroit took the top spot. memphis, stm and cleveland round out the top five. no other city in california cracked the top ten. members of congress are returning to washington today for what's known as the lame- duck session. as doug luzader reports, if you thought the battle for control of congress wassing you -- was ugly just wait. >> reporter: congress has a

with partly to mostly cloudy skies. forecast headlines for today, continue to thicken ups high clouds, scattered rain showers likely first thing thursday morning and then the weekend probably partly cloudy skies. will have more clouds pushing into the region throughout the day on sunday. next system moving in, really the target time will be early thursday morning. rainfall expectations not the biggest storm. it's a disturbance about .10 to possibly .50. winds not too much of a factor, right around 25 miles an hour. a bit of a breeze. the sierra will pick up snoem, mainly up above 8,000 feet. pretty high up there with no winter storm warnings in place. more clouds for today. we will bring in the chance of scattered showers this evening especially up in the north bay and right near the immediate coastline. but the main dynamics move in overnight and we'll have wet roadways first thing in the morning as well. 4:00 showing you the clouds, 7:00, we do bring in the chance of a few scattered showers but the main action moves in mainly after 10:00 approaching the

regulators in the u.s. and europe fined five major banks more than $3 billion for manipulate foreign currency trading. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 12. nasdaq up 10 s&p down 2. most americans are putting more into savings these days except for one group that appears to be stuck in a career- holding pattern. accord doing a new study by moody's young adults have a savings rate of negative 2%. that's compared to a rate of positive 3% for older workers. researchers say older workers are delaying retirement which makes it tougher for younger workers to advance and earn enough to keep up with costs. many are accruing more debt or ditching into savings. it was inspired by the movie back to the future. one of my favorites. now a california startup has made it a reality. tonight at 5:00, a look at
