a passing driver is being credited with saving a life after spotting this burning car off the road with its driver still inside. >> it happened all so quick that i just, once i saw the smoke i had to get him out. >> good evening i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm gasia mikaelian. drivers could see the billowing smoke, but they could not see is how a driver unconscious was saved by a stranger.

a hunch made a driver a hero. >> reporter: right above people whizzing by on a freeway. today one stopped when it mattered. >> reporter: when police and fire crews got on the scene about 9:00 this morning, they had a roaring car fire but no one to rescue, that had already been done. >> i went down there and smelled smoke, i had to get him out of car by the time i hopeed the door i was choking. >> reporter: he yelled at driver but he was gone. the unconscious man had careened across the lot and through a fence but altero didn't know anything of that.

the car wasn't even smoking when he spotted it from the freeway. he thought maybe abandoned, maybe not. >> i was a heartbeat away from going to work. i thought i have to go check it out. >> the driver's seat, the liner, the dash were all borned massively. >> reporter: altero's hunch made the difference. >> if the driver had been there for a length of time he would have been killed. >> i just could not get a grip of him. >> reporter: after slipping and sliding on the slope, altero managed to drag the man for a couple of feet then other bystanders helped drag him to the side of the road. altero has two children. six and 10 no doubt eager to hear their dad's story. >> i hope they're proud.

i hope they realize if someone is in trouble, they help out. i'm glad i was there. >> so is he, so are we, glad you were there. >> reporter: altero was late to his job at guide downs to the blind. but no problem, kudos all day for him all day long. the driver is okay, he's home from the hospital and gasia after that black out experience, he doesn't remember a thing. >> wow, debora villalon, live for us tonight, thank you. an alaska airline flight out of oakland had to return to the airport after it apparently hit a bird after it took off. alaska flight 589 was headed to san francisco, within minutes the pilot today passengers they had go back to oakland. it was carrying 152 people. >> there were lots of emergency

vehicles just waiting in case they had trouble landing because they didn't have the instruments and weren't willing to go to seattle because the instruments weren't working. i'm sure they had a different kind of landing but it seemed quite smooth. >> reporter: alaska airlines was arranging to put passengers on another flight before 11:00 tonight. it happened at the busy intersection of church and market just after 7:30, you can see the damage there caused to the back of this silver suv. the trollly rear ended the car and that set off a chain reaction involving two more cars. a fire department dispatcher told us five or six people were injured but none of those injuries are believed to be critical. here's a live look at that work right now near fremont street in san francisco. the crews plan to work through the night. wrapping up around 5:00 a.m. now remember last month, crews

try to cover their work with steel plates but the lip on the plate sent people hitting their brakes. lane closures could slow down the commute to work. as you can see from this map it extends both south and north of the bridge. a san mateo county sheriff deputy and two corrections officers are facing charges tonight for allegedly smuggling cell phones and drugs into the county jail in redwood city and putting them into the hands of a gang member behind bars. the three men are veteran employees each with 10 years of service.

as mike mibach tells us, one of those men ran for sheriff earlier this year. >> reporter: inside courtroom 4a downtown. making an appearance ishmael. >>ishmael is facing charges for bringing in oxycotin. >> reporter: juan lopez accused of smuggling two cell phones for cash to the same gang member housed in the main county jail. >> for the purposes of communication on the outside and that they allowed that to continue knowing it was there. the deputy sheriff had been employed in one of the pods knew it was there and allowed that to occur. >> it's a rough day. >> reporter: deputy rebecca rosenblack says. >> if in fact, these

allegations are true then we absolutely, we absolutely want the district attorney's office to prosecute these individuals. to the fullest extent. >> reporter: all three men are on leave. this past summer deputy lopez ran for sheriff as a right in candidate. >> that they were searching or fishing to try to find crimes or and or misconduct to punish him for running for sheriff. >> we prosecuted 18,000 cases a year. i think the best word to describe that is nonsense. >> reporter: he also says that this investigation remains open. meaning that others could

possibly still be arrested. in redwood city, mike mibach. the california highway patrol officer accused of stealing explicit pictures from female dui suspects pled guilty of copying computer data. hairington's attorney says today's not guilty plea does not mean he's denying the charges. his attorney says hairington has actually victimized more women than he has been charged with. earlier this month, hairington resigned from the chp after he admitted to forwarding nude pictures from the phones of victim. two top board members have resigned.

ginner has been under fire for saying latinos didn't have what it takes to succeed. she denied it but resigned today. the school has been under fire for its handling of racial issues and admits more work needs to be done to make the university inclusive. two maintenance workers were injure. one seriously after a natural gas explosion at vallejo high school. gas lines were turned off after the napa earthquake and the service was not restored until last night. maintenance workers were checking a heater in an unused classroom and that's when the explosion happened. no students were hurt but the school was evacuated. inspite of assurances, there was no danger. some parents still rushed to school. >> i heard they were just going to put them back in class. so i was like no, that doesn't make any sense. aisle going to get you guys. >> reporter: they said it was stay for you to go back in, but

you're leaving. >> yeah, because my head hurts, and i'm on my way to the hospital. new at 10:00, a moving memorial in san francisco for tech worker dan ha. hundreds of people turned out to say goodbye to the 267-year- old. ha went missing on halloween night. there was no sign of him until this week when a ferry captain spotted a body in the bay. an official identification could take weeks. ha's family believes it's him based on the clothing and wallet. cara liu live in san francisco and cara there was an overwhelming turn out. >> reporter: that's right, and one of his roommates said it's a show of the individual that

ha was. >> reporter: friends and family gathered to say goodbye to dan ha. >> we're quite overwhelmed by the outpouring of your support. >> reporter: several hundred filled in the hall of the lutheran in the mission. many of them colleagues from the local tech community and former classmates at stanford. his parents who traveled from canada shared heartfelt thanks to those who helped search for dan. >> and many friends, many people working so hard. >> reporter: his brothers described him as a hard worker and someone who never outgrew his childhood. >> i remember watching him play soccer and developing our love for video gamed together. we both loved computers so

two investigates an unfinished roof and missing contractor. a man reached out to us after

he paid thousands and was left in limbo. in fact, this week's rain just made the problem even worse. >> ktvu's jana katsuyama here with the homeowner's story and what happened when we tried to track down that contractor? >> reporter: there's quite a bit gasia, the family lives in san leandro. they said at one point the contractor stopped answered his phone. restarted to investigate and we found out the contractor is operating on a stolen license. >> reporter: it's the fact that his family's house is covered with a tarp. he say it is contractor he hired to replace the roof started the job two months ago. galaviz has not seen a single shingle yet. instead debris is piled in his front yard. >> see that little crack right there. that's where it started to drip. >> reporter: when it rained

wednesday, water was leaking over his daughter's bed. >> we have no roof and it's raining and we're expecting rain next week. and so you know it's very frustrating and it's kind of heartbreaking too that people you know have no heart. >> reporter: galaviz showed two investigates a contract that he signed with an apolonio morales. he paid the contractor $500 up front to cover the materials. >> when they tore off everything, then he come up and said we agree that if the roof need plywood, you give me the extra money. >> reporter: he said he paid the contractor four times for the total of $9,000. >> after he did the gutters he took off and left. i tried to get in contact with him two weeks ago and nothing. >> reporter: when was that? >> that happened in the

beginning of october. >> reporter: the contract names morales with a state license number in the corner. but when 2 investigates called the licensing board, they told us that the number was tied to alex lopez. we contacted lopez and he told us that he had worked with him months ago. >> i have nothing to do with this person. i continue to not have nothing to do with him in the future. i just want to make sure is this homeowner gets taken care of. >> reporter: i called apolonio

morales but his messages were full. so many people go with contractors, one of the things they did say is it's very important not to give the contractor money. they're entitled to 10% of the money but don't give them more. make sure you call the state and double check on that license number and make sure it matches the name. >> $9,000 right now and no roof. let's hope he shows up on tuesday. >> we'll be watching. >> thanks, jana. a warning about men lurking around schools trying to lure away young girls. an undercover operation led to today's arrest of 36-year-old gary fong of san francisco. he is facing charges for approaching minors. police say they believe a different suspect is involved in a similar incident. a 19-year-old woman there told us that just last night a man approached her with a strange

request. >> he just goes, come with me, come get my car and we'll talk about you making some money. and i was just like, i'm not interested in anything you have to say to me. >> the woman is helping police create a sketch of the man, he's described as filipino weighing about 165 pounds. he had spike -- spikey hair. gilroy police responded after getting called about a strong gas odor. they tracked the smell to a home where they say thigh found this. an active hash oil lab. police arrested 31-year-old rene vargas for making the hash oil and for position of

marijuana. a stiff sentence of up to seven years behind bars for an oakland teenager who set another teenager on fire. it's a case that received a lot of attention last year. the victim was sleeping on a bus coming home from school and sustained serious burn injuries. but as ktvu john sasaki told us no one including the victim's parents is happy with the sentence. >> people poured out of an oakland courtroom after richard thomas was sentenced. >> the thing that just struck me when he walked in was my god, he's just a kid. >> reporter: the 17-year-old thomas seen in this sketch with his attorney set sasha's skirt on fire. thomas was sentenced to 5-1/2 years. >> 5-1/2 years he will have to

serve in jail. >> reporter: sasha's mother spoke. >> it's horrible what you did. but we don't hate you. we think hate creates more hate. we want you to come out of prison not being hateful. >> reporter: tomas wanted to give a statement but wasn't feeling well. his cousin told us what he would have said. >> he just wants him to forgive him for what happened. it was a big misunderstanding. he apologizing. i know i could see it in his eyes that he was genuinely sorry for what he's done. >> reporter: the good thing is sasha is now in college. sasha's family wanted thomas to be tried in juvenile court. >> to treat that decision that choice that he made on that day as, the choice of a grown person doesn't seem fair. >> reporter: in fremont the

judge will evaluate thomas educational and rehabilitation process and will do so again next summer. if everything goes good, his sentence will be reduced. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. clouds moving into the area from this ridge of high pressure. it's not a wet weather pattern anymore. it's just a ridge here. and this is the fog carrying the moisture over the top. we will see partly cloudy skies through saturday and sunday. saturday will be a lot like today and sunday will have a few more clouds. currently outside we have a little bit of fog right along the coast. a few more clouds over head. there's the coastal fog and a little bit of coastal fog moving in the san anselmo, sausalito area. i do see the fog happening

again. if you had it this morning, it'll probably be there in some form tomorrow morning just not as extensive. or expansive as it was this morning. overnight lows mid-40s. the recent rain, the ground is wet. overnight lows are in the 40s. and that's basically when it's clear in the winter months starting about now. valley fog happens a lot because typically we have a moist ground. the forecast for the next couple of days more of the same as high pressure sets us up. clouds coming over the ridge. fog showing up in the valley. if you have travel plans in the central valley tomorrow or sunday morning. do so at mid-morning when the fog has a chance to lift. we'll forecast next weekend and then we'll talk about the rain we expect to get next week. we expect to get next week. and two wind ♪

new at 10:00, two basketball coaching teaming up to get at risk teens off the streets. it's called operation athletics. and it comes two weeks after a young basketball player was shot and killed. amber has the story of how the love of the game has already saved lives. >> reporter: that's right, we're at the richmond police station. and on tuesday, the teams want to meet with police, they want to help save lives. >> reporter: friday night practice at richmond high. one week from the season's

first game. a season without team leader rodney fraizer. >> when i do play i feel like ambition. like i want to play harder for rodney. >> reporter: 16-year-old rodney fraizer was shot and killed in front of his home one week ago tonight. >> that's what he loved, up top. >> reporter: now his coach wants to build on what he calls his wall of success. photos and newspaper clippings about former students including gang members who have turned their lives around with guidance from coaches and teachers. >> we want this opportunity, now is it going to work? i don't know. what we had been doing wasn't working good enough. rodney is dead. and i think we're going to give something a shot and see what happens. >> reporter: the idea of teaming up with law enforcement came from berkeley high's basketball coach mark deluca. he says the plan involves the police helping them identify at risk youth they can target. >> it's not going to be easy.

some of these kids are addicted to drugs. they're addicted to the life, they're addicted to the streets but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. >> reporter: the day before rodney died he left his basketball shoes with his teacher for safekeeping. something many inner city students do to safeguard their valuables. now their coach is trying to safeguard their lives with basketball and mentoring. >> i know it helps me stay out of a lot of trouble because it's so much stuff that you can get into into the neighborhood that i'm from. >> some of the warrior players will be here at the game and some of the executive that is run the team will talk to you to make sure we're still feeling good about what we're doing. >> reporter: coach collins received a phone call from the golden state warriors this evening he says members of the warriors plan to attend a game and these players are invited to attend a warriors game. their plan include teaching these teens there is a world of

opportunities beyond their neighborhood. >> what a program. thank you, amber. the two window washers in new york city who were stranded outside the 68th floor of the new world trade center on wednesday are now talking about what happened. the nation watched as juan lozano and juan lopez dangled 827 feet in the air. a cable on the scaffolding snappedded and left the man hanging at that sharp angle right on the side of the building. the two men say they were scared at first but then their safety training kicked in. >> i got four years in the union, 24 years experience window cleaning. and i know this job safety number one. >> we've been prepared before the incident for any incident like that so, it was a calmness. we knew everything, everybody was safe around us, beneath us. >> the two juans as some are now calling them say they do

local history. >> reporter: the carlos club neon sign tonight is dark. now that bothers some residents but even worse some of those residents fear that under new ownership this landmark sign here in san carlos will be changed forever. >> reporter: why would this old sign be so dear to so many. in part because of how it shined, a nice neon welcome to visitors. the carlos club sign has been here since 1947. >> it's the name of our town. it's such a beacon for the city. people remember that. it's a community memory. >> reporter: sandra alhouse is concerned this piece of history could be gone. the new business draped a

temporary sign over the neon sign. that's when it all started. >> it's a historic sign. cool sign, it makes sense that people are concerned about it. i just wish they would talk to us about it instead of each other. >> reporter: joe pomeron spoke on behalf of the owner. he says there's no rumors that the sign will be taken down. >> it's been completely refurbished. it is in better working order than it was when we bought the space. >> reporter: the sign is altered with a new name and carlos nowhere to be seen. an alteration that hundreds of residents hope to never see. >> it's the carlos part of the sign that you know, the whole thing is beautiful, but it's the carlos portion that really means something to people. >> reporter: this battle will be brought up in an upcoming meeting of the city council. as this is a historic building,

the city may have some concern. but the owner may have a right to alter the name. >> reporter: ken pritchett live tonight in san carlos, thank you ken. facebook is making a change that advertisers may not like. outside companies want to reach customers they'll have to start buying ads. facebook will limit the numbers of free promotional posts you see in the newsroom. it surveyed users and they're tired of promotional ads. the company promises that users will not see more ads in the news feed. next week the police chief of horindez is going to go before the council to talk about putting in new cameras to see people comeing in and come -- people coming in and out of the city. >> reporter: in the small town

of orinda the conversation is just getting started. >> it could be something good to have. >> reporter: but we're just starting to hear more. >> it could be a hot spot for more communities. >> reporter: it's a question of cameras. cameras that would watch who comes and who goes. >> i think it's also an invasion of privacy. >> reporter: the $10,000 cameras would scan the license plate of every car. >> it's a camera that takes a picture of a license plate. >> this technology allows the officer to be advised immediately if the car is stolen or the license plate is wanted. >> reporter: the hope is twofold, if the bad guys know there are cameras they will choose to stay away or if they do come to town officers get a little help solving or preventing the crime. the question with cameras, where do you put them. highway24 cuts right through the middle of orinda. that seems to be a hot spot.

a coast guard helicopter stuck own a cliff above bodega bay has been flown back to its base. the helicopter crew responded after a 4-year-old boy fell down a cliff. but the helicopter landed on a 10-degree slope and the coast guard worried it would roll over if they tried to take off. coast guard personnel used ropes and a pick up truck to pull the helicopter to level ground and flew it back to its base station at sfo. three passengers died and more than 180 others were injured. now the south korean governor

has ordered a ban for asiana at sfo. the congress approved the keystone pipeline. the pipeline would move oil from canada all the way to the gulf of mexico. the state department has had the project under review for six years now president obama says the pipeline still faces challenges. the bill now goes to the senate where it's future is uncertain. a vote there is set for next week. the royal family will be making a trip to the united states next month. prince william and his wife kate are scheduled to visit new york city where they will make a stop at the national september 11th memorial and museum. prince william will also make a trip to a conference. it won't also be work they're also planning to attend an nba game. thousands turned out for a

state, prisoners are being released because of a proposition that was approved. dozens of prisoners went before a judge. each hearing lasts about 15 minutes, one after the other the prisoners rarely speak. the judge granted 11 inmates their releases. >> her charges were dropped down to misdemeanors designated misdemeanors and she'll be released today. >> reporter: the california department of corrections and rehabilitation estimates 5,000 inmates may be possible for reduced sentences. and thousands more from jails. a thousand alone from san mateo. but steve wagstaffe has concerns. >> misdemeanors don't get

some valley fog again tonight. i think we will as a matter of fact. especially in the north bay and east bay. the story the next few days will be these clouds coming up over the ridge. fair weather cloud. fog in the valley and sunday a few more clouds over head high. so what we had today is what we're going to see tomorrow and very similar on sunday with just a few more cloud. pretend as we get into tuesday. here tuesday night into wednesday, here comes this weather system. it's very similar to the system we saw a few days ago. so it's not a big deal. not a lot of rain. but it's a weather system. and there's more up behind here. that are going to move in toward the holiday week. toward thanksgiving. this is sort of the long range model this is into wednesday now. i want to show you the jet stream is drifting a little further south. this weather timing is not even close but it gives you an idea that the weather system is now going to be here. there's more storms that are going to be able to slide in.
