good evening. we begin with developing news. a are church in the heart of downtown san jose. it was severely damaged after a massive fire. part of the historic church collapse. the fire is out. the crews remain on the scene tonight. we will tell you more about this fire. it started this afternoon wind san jose fire department received several calls of smoke coming from the church attic. when firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor. the fire was quickly elevated to a four alarm blaze. meaning the majority of san jose fire resources -- more than 100 firefighters at one point, were called to the scene. the church is a large wooden building with several rooms upstairs and downstairs. firefighters had to fight the

fire in defensive mode, fighting from the outside. they initially tried to attack it from the inside. but it proved to be too difficult. >> the crews took quite a beating training -- trying to get up to the fire. they were unable to estimate wish it from the interior. it is a heavy timber old structure and it burned hot. >> it is a community church. it is very heartbreaking to see this church go up in flames. and they could not stop it from burning. >> the woman you just heard from grew up with this church. she lives next-door. and she was one who called 911. her neighbors alerted the priest who had no idea. according to her, it was founded in 1906. the damage is limited to just the church. there is an adjacent church building. based on the height of this building, san jose police are keeping neighbors away at a

safe distance. a firefighters planned be there at the scene of that devastating fire taking place at the church for several more hours. we have a crew there. we will bring you more later in the newscast. police in walnut creek released new details about a hit and run that left a pedestrian with severe injuries. this happened after 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of walnut and hutchinson trail. witnesses say the victim ran into the roadway moments before he was hit. initially, investigators said it was a dark-colored suv that had the pedestrian. we now know it was a dark sedan. police say the 40-year-old walnut creek resident suffered skull and facial injuries. he remains in critical condition tonight. now to the north bay, a serious death of a woman. investigators in napa county are trying to figure out whether the woman found in the middle of a rural highway was a victim of a hit and run or some other crime. crews reopened a stretch of highway 29 that was closed all day for the investigation.

we were at the scene earlier today. we're live now at the county sheriffs department. >> reporter: the location and the clothing is the reason this death is suspicious. it is not at a place where you would expect somebody to go for a walk or a job. the victim was wearing high heels. certainly not dressed for a walk in a rural mountain road. >> wine country travelers were turned away all day and blocks from driving highway 29 north of this area. >> we received multiple calls from people who came upon this. >> just before 5:00 in the morning, calls to 911 and reported a woman lying in the middle of the southbound rain -- lane. this investigation started early in the morning and stretched into the late afternoon. and the investigation team reconstructed the scene looking into whether the woman in her 50s was the victim of a hit and run. >> we're looking at a possible

homicide. >> sheriff investigators are looking into other possibilities. >> she could have been just dumped there in the roadway. >> one of the things that makes this suspicious is location. a winding mountain road with no shoulder to speak of. not exactly the place you would go for a walk. >> although it is a rural area, it is a well-traveled roadway. >> highway 29, connecting lake county to the bay area. it twists and turns and makes it dangerous for walking or jogging. investigators are hoping that someone driving here early this morning saw something. >> i saw a woman walking in the area. >> maybe they saw her associated with a vehicle. we don't know. >> if you saw anything unusual before 4:45 a.m. this morning on that stretch of highway 29 just north of calistoga, the sheriffs department wants to hear from you. they have tentatively identified this with -- this victim but

want to identify her family before releasing her name. homicide investigators in san francisco are searching for clues after a man was fatally stabbed last night. this happened at about 8:30 p.m. last night at the intersection of pharaoh and market street. when officers arrived, the victim was on the sidewalk suffering from at least one stab wound to the just. he was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead a short time later. police say they do not have any suspects. they are asking anyone with information to call them. >> numbers show that oakland is the nations -- capital for the third year in a row. robberies shut up to a record high last year. they are dropping back to historical norms. the fbi attributes the reversal to good police work and the use of cell phone kill switches. in 2013, oakland reported 4922 robberies. that is about 14 a day. that is compared to about 4202

in san francisco in a little more -- and a little more than 1000 san jose. >> another mountain lion touring and -- warning out tonight for people in san mateo county. they say a mountain lion was spotted last night near sylvan way. that is in the emerald lake hills neighborhood near edgewood park, a natural preserve. sheriff deputies say there is no further information on the siding. people who encounter a mountain lion should not run away. they should turn around and face the animal and make noise and rate -- and wave their arms. more than 170 passengers were stuck with a virus on a cruise ship. the centers for disease control say 172 passengers came down with the illness during a month-long cruise from tahiti. it is the same ship where 129 people contracted a virus during a weeklong cruise off of the telephone the coast. the cdc has sent an official to the bustle to investigate the

latest outbreak. tonight president obama confirms the death of an american aid worker. peter kassig, at the hands of islamic state militants. the president reads a statement saying that the killing of peter kassig was an act of pure evil. we have this report on the execution of the 26-year-old. >> he went to syria to help the refugees and the people suffering through the war. isis says they have killed him and released a video. it does not show his execution but it shows a man holding a severed and bloody had who they say was peter kassig. >> the former u.s. army ranger who served in iraq and -- in 2007 went to the middle east as an aid worker and was captured by isis while delivering medical supplies to syrians. peter kassig was known as they driven humanitarian with genuine desire is to help the war-torn region and the victims. >> there he was. this scrawny pale tattooed kid

speaking broken arabic. despite the language barrier, he was able to treat wounded syrians with such compassion. he was a kind of individual who didn't just believe in speaking about doing things. >> while the video is different than previous isis sums -- in that it doesn't show the actual execution, it shows many of the same bloody similarities as these other films. the video also appears to show the execution of several syrian soldiers. >> is believed that isis is holding other americans and westerners hostage in syria. they have threatened to kill them. given everything we have seen and heard from isis -- from isis, there are real we reasons to be spared further lives. >> you'd -- recovery crews started to collect debris from the crash site of malaysian airlines flight 17. that airline was shot down four months ago killing all 298 people on board. the recovered pieces will be taken to the nether blends --

netherlands. three ukrainian officials say the recovery is expected to take 10 days. it is a year since the tunnel open. 160,000 vehicles passed through the tunnel everyday. many drivers say the additional has helped cut down the commute time by about 15 minutes. the $417 million project was funded by federal stimulus funds during the recession. a reminder for drivers heading across the bay bridge this week. they continued project to limit traffic to just four lanes overnight. caltrans has resumed work that was canceled last month when the clunky metal plates that crews used caused traffic jams. caltrans installed these to repair expansion joints. this time crews are using quick setting concrete instead of those plates. crews will work monday through saturday night starting at 8:00. the project is expected to last about 10 weeks. there is no place like home for the holidays. not an option for many women

some customers of the popular airport shuttle service, super shuttle, had to find another way to get to and from bay area airports this morning. 75% of the drivers called in sick today affecting service at all three major bay area airports. ktvu news anchor tells us why shuttle drivers decided to stay home. >> the blue and yellow super shuttle buses were few and far between at san francisco international. service was limited the entire weekend because many drivers did not show up for work. >> are they on strike? >> yes they are on strike. yesterday and today. >> people were waiting at the

terminals. >> super shuttle drivers are not union. technically, they can't go on strike. but a company representative confirmed a group of drivers all called in sick yesterday and today in an apparent protest. the company believes the dispute has something to do with the franchise super settle charges. they say they would fiber -- rather pay what other companies pay. >> this customer showed up sooner then expected. >> drivers seemed to be unaware -- customers seem to be unaware of the problems. >> we had the other door-to-door company. we contacted them. they are providing us with the man's. >> drivers from other shuttle companies were happy to pick up the extra business. >> we can earn a little bit

more money. it is good for us. >> a company representative for super shuttle says they are hoping to resolve the dispute with the drivers quickly. but that it will take time to meet with all of the -- them and hear the demands. >> we did speak to a super shuttle vice president in the region. he says that he met with drivers in the bay area. he says that while drivers complain the fees are too high, competitors do not have the same cost as super shuttle. so it would be difficult to raise passenger fees without cutting costs. the president says there is a backup in place if this continues tomorrow. and there is a contract with a bus company. turkey farms produced of the lowest number of turkeys this year. turkey farms cut production this year due to hire cost for things like transportation and feet. but they say the low numbers do not indicate a shortage or higher consumer prices for

thanksgiving. a usda error culture economist says there is no correlation -- in northern california company is recalling two kinds of brown rice flour. that there is a possible salmonella contamination. lindbergh family far as issued a voluntary recall for the organic brown rice flour. it is sold in bulk. and in 25-pound bags. it was between november 4 and november 12. there have been no reports of serious illness. this is the second recall in the last two months. . new details surrounding the bill cosby controversy. the actor is maintaining his silence about sexual assault allegations. but his lawyer posted a statement on his website. if that impart that that but -- decades old discredited allegations against mr. cosby have resurfaced. that does not make them true. bill cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with

any common. the cosby settled a civil suit with a woman in 2006 without admitting guilt. new accusations surfaced when bill cosby was called a rapist. violet -- pilots are being word and -- being warned not to fly near the alaskan volcano. it started spewing ash on wednesday. pilots reported seeing ash as high as 30,000 feet above sea level. the volcano observatory says it is possible for the eruption to last for weeks and even months. eruption has not had much effect on people on the ground. the closest community is about 40 miles away. in the meantime, in hawaii, the lava flow from the kilauea volcano on the big island made its way this weekend to the island trash transfer station. island officials say several break outflows continue to progress. but they say they are sluggish and are not posing any immediate threat to residents. the lineage of the flow has not advanced where it's -- from

a heartbreaking youtube video of a recently widowed southern california father, singing to his premature baby boy, has now hit 13 million views. [ singing ] he is singing the beatles song, blackbird to his son. his son was born at 24 weeks after his mother died in her sleep. tragically, the baby died shortly after this video was taken just four days old. a memorial service for both the mother and son took place. >> the university of california has reportedly failed to comply with a spending disclosure law according to the san francisco chronicle. the university system was

supposed to submit a report by october 1 on how it spends money. but so far, university officials have only submitted a seven page report. the data is required by state officials to determine how much tuition you see -- uc should charge. this comes days after the president opposed raising tuition as much as 5% per year for the next five years. it is a trend reversal for younger workers who are now seeing faster increases in pay than older employees. payroll processors say wages for workers earning less than $20,000 a year or jumped almost 5.5% from a year ago. those earning 20 up to $50,000 a year saw less than a 5% change. they say it may be due to companies playing catch-up with overdue races and higher minimum wages in many states. a dog in texas provided plenty of prove he really is man's best friend. paramedics and mason, texas

last month took this picture of the 4-year-old beagle mix named buddy. his 85-year-old owner called paramedics because of breathing problems, not wanting to be separated. and buddy hitched a ride on the outside of the ambulance. ambulance says they were flagged down by another driver that said the body was sitting on a small step on the outside of the vehicle. he was all messed up for about 20 miles. the paramedics finally stopped and let him ride inside. but he and his owner are back home doing fine. the internet favorite. cats will be in the bay area. robbie will be kicking off san francisco's adoption pop-up. the event will be held at macy's at union square on november 21. the same time as the seasons annual adopt a pet window unveiling. you will have a chance to meet grumpy in person and make a new addition to your family possibly just in time for the holiday season. not grumpy but another pet.

summer. now strangers are stepping up to help the little girl. we're live in the newsroom with more on why that family was chosen by a new organization. >> that little girl is the first ever recipient for a newly formed -- organization aimed at children with spinal cord injuries. it is a personal experience for the group, that had the organizers wanting to assist her. >> strangers from alma walked into her home. a little girl paralyzed from the neck down. janice has waited for this day. the 9-year-old was playing outside of her oakland home in may when she was hit by a stray bullet. jackie spent months in the hospital and doctors told her she would never walk again. but her mother says her daughter is determined to not use a wheelchair.

and now she says jackie likes therapy. she is able to move her right hand and feel her legs. seeing jackie brings back memories for this woman whose brother was paralyzed when he was 15. he passed away at age 40 and 2011. she started a foundation in his name to help children with spinal cord injuries. and she knew jackie should be the first recipient. >> she needs help. that was our first impression. that this is a person that my brother put in front of us to say, this is who you need to help right now. >> they provided jackie's mom with a $5000 check. they plan to donate an ipad along with a wheelchair accessible van and helped to build a ramp outside of the home. >> any youth with a spinal cord injury in northern california -- deserves to have the best chance. >> mom could not be more happy for the help. she says that she feels like the donors have good hearts. and to her, they are no longer strangers but like members of her own family who all want the best care for jackie. >> and jackie is going to

ktvu.com. we posted a link to the, cover california, site. you can look at paid -- you can look for this under web links. the sheriff's office says a resident security camera helped officers catch two burglary suspects. authorities say a man and woman were caught on video friday afternoon breaking into a home near foxhound lane. officers arrested 54-year-old mark hagan and brandy ray. both of them from santa rosa. one was on parole for a previous burglary. some neighborhoods in napa have limited access to water tonight. crews in napa say it took -- it could be a week before water services back to normal after two water main breaks. the latest happened on friday near the intersection of highway 12 and 29. this happened is repairs were being made on a break that happened last week and on the same line. water officials say they hope both breaks will be fully repaired by next friday.

in the meantime, the city is asking residents to avoid unnecessary water consumption, especially during peak demand times from 6:00 until 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. an unusual problem is holding a plans to tear down the span of the eastern bay bridge. we're told that seabirds are causing the delay. >> they are double-breasted seabirds. not in danger but federally protected seabirds ignoring the pricey decoys, audio recordings and bird condos installed on the new bridge to lure them next-door. costs are soaring higher. because when the bird start laying eggs, demolitions must stop. taxpayers are shelling out another $12 million for this problem. one price estimate for this bird load -- bird relocation is $30 million. >> what is your recommendation? >> put a sign on the new

bridge, free healthcare. free fish. free transportation. they will move over there [ laughter ] >> fran -- a san francisco radio talkshow hosts says the bird relocation laws written in 1918 don't make sense today. but likely won't be revised. >> because there are so many environmentalists and ecologists that one that set in stone. because i believe, they see us as the invasive species. >> crowd hands -- caltrans argues it is saving taxpayer money. if we don't do this, the penalties could far exceed the cost. we are in a balancing act. >> but this demolition work will not be done until at least 2018. so this balancing act for the birds is going to be hovering around for many years. and san francisco, fox news. the jack london square very terminal in oakland is set to reopen after repairs. crews installed a new security gate and other parts. the newest ferry terminal is across the estuary.

it is part of a refurbishing project. the ferry district says the oakland terminal will reopen in time for monday morning commute services. we want to update you now on our developing story that we brought you at the top of the newscast. holy cross church at the heart of downtown san jose was severely damaged after a massive fire. we're live at the scene where luckily church -- church services were not going on at the time. we have new information regarding the fire. >> reporter: right now, the fire is out. but dozens of firefighters still remain on the scene here to take care of the hotspots. you can see the truck dousing water on top of the roof. this happened four hours ago. they are still here. the church was founded in 1906. so a lot of churchgoers and neighbors, are in disbelief. most of the roof is gone. i'm told the priest tried to salvage what he could including statues. the fire started at 2:00, just

after the italian mass. so luckily nobody was inside at the time. they alerted police about the fire. when firefighters got here, it it was heavily involved -- engulfed in flames. the fire could have started in an attic area. neighbors reported seeing smoke their first. there is also talk among neighbors and churchgoers that possibly the wiring near the piano on the second floor may have sparked the flames. that is under investigation. i just spoke with the fire department on that. that is not confirmed. but they are looking into that. also, they tell me that because the building is so old, there may not have been sprinklers inside. right now they are trying to determine the cause. and as you mentioned, services are impacted. there was a 6:00 max that was supposed to be going on. but that has been canceled. stargazers getting ready for a meteor shower.
