fire breaking out after sunday services and then sends firefighters scrambling for safety as pieces of a historic century hill church collapse. holy cross church was a beloved san jose landmark. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. the fire sent smoke over downtown san jose. more than 100 firefighters responded but the age and wood construction was too much for them. debora villalon is live with the coverage after talking with detectives about where the fire

may have started. >> reporter: the church was empty. a mass in italian for about 50 people had entered about half an hour before. but behind the windows is a choir balcony and a possible electrical problem with a pipe organ. it took almost no time for fire to destroy a church that was open since 1919. some watched thinking of their many memories. >> we've been coming to this church our entire life and you know, it's like a second home to us. we come very often. at least almost every weekend. to see it go down like this. >> it's sad for the community. the community church. so it's very heart wrenching to see a church go down in flames and they couldn't stop it from burning. it's very sad. >> reporter: it couldn't be stopped because fire was already running the lenght of the attic when crews arrived.

they ran hose lines inside but the fire was raging over their head, the structure old wood. stairs and hallway narrow. crewed retreated to fight the fire from outside, listen as firefighters shout a warning moments after they pulled back. >> thank goodness we didn't have any firefighters underneath this. >> reporter: once the flames were knocked down danger remains. the church may collapse. >> and we poured a lot of water to try to extinguish it. it's absolutely a collapse risk. >> reporter: the fire seemed to start in a choir loft near a pipe organ. he hopes diocese although he knows it won't be the same anymore. >> it's a tremendous loss for us for the city and for the

community. they don't build churches like that anymore. >> reporter: the pastor living here on the property and hopes his apartment the still usable along with a pulpit in the back where he says masses can be held as the church sorts out its future. >> looks like a long road ahead, thanks debora. students are reacting to news of a proposed rate increase. the increase would be 5% each year. governor brown opposes the increase. but -- uc president napolitano says there's no deal. students say they're in a tough position. >> i'm cutting corners and living right now. so i am pretty sure that's going to make it more harder

than it already is. >> my parents will definitely not be happy. i would have to get a job. >> reporter: the proposed increase would raise tuition to almost $13,000 next year and to more than $15,000 by 2019. governor brown is expected to speak at that board meeting. investigators are looking into a mysterious death of a woman in wine country. they're trying to figure out if the woman was a victim or some other crime. crews had a stretch of the highway closed much of the day. ktvu's noelle walker was at the scene with what investigators said. >> reporter: all day. >> we make a left on deer park. >> reporter: wine country travelers were turned away. >> how long have you going to be? >> all day. >> reporter: a long drive from calistoga. >> we received multiple calls this morning from people who came up on it. >> reporter: just before 5:00 in the morning calls into 911 reported a woman laying on the

side of the road. the investigation had started early in the morning straight into the afternoon. while the highway patrol accident investigation team looked into the woman in her 50s was a victim of a hit-and- run. >> we're looking at it as a possible homicide. >> reporter: napa investigators are looking into other possibilities. >> she may have just been dumped there. >> reporter: a wine -- windy road with no sidewalk. not a place where you would just go for a walk. connecting bay county to the bay area, the twists and turns make it dangerous for walking or jogging. accident investigators are hoping someone driving here early this morning saw something. >> saw the woman walking in the area. may they thought it was

unusual. maybe they saw her with another vehicle prior to us getting there. i don't know. for a third year in a row, oakland ranked as the nation's robbery capital. a new fbi report shows that robberies in oakland shot up to a record high last year. but that so far this year they're dropping back to historical forms. the fbi tributes this reversal to good police work. back in 2013, oakland tallied the most robberies per capita at 4,922. that's about 14 robberies per day. that's compared to 4,202 robberies in san francisco. and a little more than 1,000 in san jose. both of those cities have twice the population as oakland. new at 10:00, federal drug agents conducted surprise inspections of nfl medical teams at stadiums across the country today including the san francisco 49ers. the inspections are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged prescription drug abuse

in the nfl. the probe grew out of a civil suit filed by former nfl players including former 49er jeremy newberry. this weekend marked the start of the open enrollment period for the 2015 health care coverage under the affordable care act. people interested in coverage had a chance today to find out more about a health insurance fair at the san francisco jewish community center. trained counselors were on hand to help people sign up, navigate the system and also explain coverage. >> everyone gets one free doctor visit a year, that's your annual physical, you can do your mammograms, your

prostate tests, your colonoscopies all of that is now free because that's considered preventative care. >> reporter: counselors suggest new enrollies by january 1st. we posted a link to covered california, that's the state's insurers campaign. a helicopter crew rescued a young hiker stuck on a cliff. the 20-year-old man tumbled down a steep cliff near the monticello dam. it's not clear if he was climbing up or down the cliff but they say he was stuck about 50 feet from the bottom and about 200 feet from the top. the helicopter crew hoisted him into the helicopter and took him to the hospital. he was treated for nonlife threatening injuries.

a report says two victims are warning the public about a scam. the department released this public service announcement in cantonese. the scammers claim to provide relief from a curse and convince the target that cash and valuables must be offered in exchange. new details now on a hit- and-run in walnut creek last night that left a pedestrian severely injured. witnesses say the victim ran into the roadway moments before he was hit. initially police said the vehicle description was a dark colored suv that hit the pedestrian. we now know it was a dark sedan. police say the 48-year-old walnut creek resident suffered skull and facial injuries. he remains in critical condition tonight. the state department has taken the unprecedented step of shutting down its entire

unclassified e-mail system in the wake of a suspected hacker attack. officials say no classified information appears to have been accessed. the suspicious activity was detected around the same time of a previously reported incident. it's believed that hackers infiltrated the white house system. there's no indication that the state department had also been affected. a number of agencies including the postal service and national weather service reported their systems were also compromised. month after month you see the old bay bridge disappearing. the problem facing caltrans now that's costing the states millions of the dollars and could stop demolition this winter. travelers left waiting. the reason a large group of bay area shovel drivers called in sick, plus. >> if you think back in your own life what happened in the last year, they have gone through a lot. the bay area comes together

will take time to meet with each drivers and hear their demands. >> they met with drivers in the bay area, he says while drivers complain their fees are too high competitors like uber and lyft don't have the same costs. so it would be difficult to cut costs. the vp is not sure if the sick out will continue tomorrow but if it does he says there is a back up plan in place and the company has a contract with a bus company to transport travelers. new daily parking fees are set to go into effect tomorrow. it will cost you $1 to park at the oakland coliseum b.a.r.t. station. come december 8 you will be charged a dollar daily fee at the hayward b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. says the money from these new parks fees will go to a special account for station access.

going up the number of fiery accidents. in canada last july, a 74 car train carrying crude oil derailed killing 32 people. back and crude is known to be more volatile. it's increasingly being transported by rail. two investigates tracks its delivery of crude to the richmond rail terminal where two 100 car trains arrive every month. but the state receives very little information about the schedules and when they will use crude oil trains or coming and going through bay area neighborhoods. >> just like you would know where an amtrak train is and whether it's layed to a station or not. we should be able to know that about volatile rail trains coming through our area. >> two investigates uncovers safety concerns about the railcars carrying back and

okay. >> reporter: caltrans argues it's saving taxpayers money. >> if we don't do this, our penalties could far exceed costs. so we're in a balancing act. >> reporter: but the demolition work won't be done until at least 2018. so this balancing act for the birds is going to be long. and the closures are set to begin in two hours at midnight at the davis street exit. the closure is to finish work at the overpass there. all lanes are set to reopen tomorrow by 4:00 a.m. it was one year ago today that caltrans opened the long awaited fourth bore of the tunnel in the east bay. 160,000 vehicles passed through that tunnel every day. many passengers say the additional bore has helped cut down their commute time by 10 to 15 minute.

never walk again. but mom silvia says her daughter is determined not to use a wheelchair. and now she says jackie likes therapy. she's able to move her right hand and feel her legs. seeing jackie brings memories for tuvie who's brother was paralyzed at 18. he passed away in 2011. tuvie started a foundation and knew jackie should be the first recipient. >> she needs help. this is the person that my brother put in front of us to say hey this is who you guys need to help right now. >> we know the challenges that exist for the family and the small ways we can help them. >> reporter: toovey provided jackie's mother with a check and they plan to donate an i pad, an accessible van and plan to build a ramp outside her home. >> anyone who has a stem injury

a storm that began in the northwest last week hit the midwest in central states today with several inches of snow. that's created slick hazardous driving conditions throughout the region. dozens of accidents have been recorded including some fatalities all because of the weather. someone's dash cam captured the video of a crash. that driver we're told was not seriously hurt. >> that looks scary. in tahoe they're getting ready. trying to get ready for ski season. even though there's not a lot

of snow up there now they're trying to make snow as long as it is cold out. >> reporter: they have the conditions to help make that snow. it would be nice to add the real stuff as well. that could be happening over the next few days as the weather pattern you see behind me is developing offshore. this is what i'm watching for later in the week. this will not be a major storm but this will change the weather pattern up enough that we're talking about rain showers and possibly more snow showers up near the sierra. out near the live doppler sweep, trying to detect a little bit of shower activity. a completely different story to our south. we're still talking about fire season in southern california. a red flag warning in place right now until 8:00 monday evening for los angeles down toward san diego. we had gusty offshore wind approaching 45 to 50 miles per hour so fire season continues for southern california. back here in the bay area right now we do have partly cloudy

skies. temperatures cooling rapidly. right now it's 42 degrees in fairfield. tonight right now cooler than yesterday at this time. santa rosa mid-40s and san francisco 56 degrees. as far as the frost advisory we do have a frost advisory to our north up toward parts of mendecino county approaching parts of the north coast. right now we do have this taking a live look outside. more clouds for tonight. a cold start monday morning with partly cloudy skies and rain. does make a come back over the next few days. first thing tomorrow morning look at these 30s showing up in santa rosa, napa, fairfield in the upper 30s. so you will definitely want to bundle up. a noticeable change first thing tomorrow morning. san francisco 47 and san jose 43 degrees. so here we go with the clouds over the portions of the bay area right now. tomorrow partly sunny skies for your monday it'll be a mild afternoon after that cool start. and then here we go with the changes developing offshore.

first system that moves in late tuesday especially after 5:00 p.m. up in the north bay. that rain line gradually spreading to the south. possibly another system. this could move into the region on thursday especially by thursday afternoon and into the evening hours. looking way ahead into the upcoming weekend we could have another shot of rainfall. dense fog in the central valley tomorrow morning. scattered high clouds throughout the day. here we go with the timing the first system tuesday evening. 6:00, 7:00, 8:00. still rain showers for the wednesday morning commute. plan on that. then wednesday afternoon probably just partly cloudy skies that could be a rain producer. partly cloudy skies, remember that cold start in the morning. but temperatures recover nicely into the afternoon hours. san jose we go 71. morgan hill 27 degrees and san francisco 68. pacifica 62 degrees. the five day forecast with chance of showers by tuesday
