a raging fire at a historic century-old church sent firefighters scrambling for safety. dramatic scene there as the cross crashed to the ground. here is a live look at the church this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there all morning where firefighters have been putting out hot spots that continue to flare up. coming up in two minutes, what the pastor believes sparked the devastating fire and why parishers say rebuilding it won't be easy. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> it's emotional for a lot of people. >> it is. >> good morning. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, tori doesn't want it to get too cold. >> 39 degrees. >> a lot of 20s, 30s, mendocino down in the santa cruz mountains. take your pick. it's pretty cold. not crazy cold, not like the middle of the country. but it's cold for us. one of the coldest mornings so far. maybe the heater kicked on.

high clouds, mostly sunny to start. we're in between systems. we clear for a while and then higher clouds later on. maybe leading to rain on wednesday. plenty of time to tackle it. if we don't get anything out of it, it would not surprise me. 32 at the napa airport. 30 santa rosa. novato is in there. i'm sure near san jose there is a few as well. walnut creek, others are in the low 40s. 43 morgan hill, some upper 40s for a few depending upon if your higher elevations are running cool. the system wants to come in early wednesday morning. a couple of days to tackle it. 60s on the temperatures. all right, sal. i don't think i've heard anything bad yet. >> we've had a couple of minor things. we haven't had anything major. that's probably why you haven't heard anything. we're hoping to keep it that way. we certainly do have slowdowns. i want to show you the traffic on the bay bridge will be

backed up a little bit as you come up through the area. it will be slow as you -- about a 35-minute delay is what the sensors are saying. let's go to highway 101 in san francisco. you can see this traffic is moderately heavy. i'm looking at chp's list. wouldn't don't have anything reported on the -- we don't have anything reported on the peninsula or in san francisco. as a matter of fact, we've had a couple of things reported throughout this whole area. southbound 101 looks okay. let's go to san jose. 85. just after 87, slow to 17. but 280 and 101 are not that bad yet. it's rather early for the commute. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. a church in san jose is badly damaged by a fast-moving fire. it began yesterday afternoon at the holy cross catholic church on jackson street. more than 100 firefighters responded. tara moriarty is at the church where some people say rebuilding it just won't be the same. tara? >> reporter: that's for sure. this church has been here since

1919. you know, it has relic, it simply cannot be replaced. right now, it's just a shell of a building, as you can see right now. firefighters say it is in danger of collapsing. this fire broke out yesterday afternoon around 2:30 and more than 100 firefighters responded. but by the time, they arrived the fire reached the attic. it took two and a half hours to contain. people who live in the neighborhood were shocked to see their long-time church burning. >> it's sad for the community. the community church. it's very heartbreaking to see a church like this go up in flames and they couldn't stop it from burning. very sad. >> reporter: still no official cause for the fire. but the priest believes it started on the second floor because of an electrical problem with the pipe organ. the priest lives on the property and hopes his apartment is still useable along with the fellowship hall

where temporary services may be held. the church was empty when the fire broke out. a mass in italian just ended a half-hour earlier. firefighters have been spraying water on flareups. structural engineers will be out here since the bones of the building were leaning. the stucco is cracked. you can see where the jesus painting has separated from the stucco. the front of the building is leaning forward. the altar inside is completely intact as well as sphanned- glass windows -- stained-glass windows. live from san jose, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:05. we're also following developing news right now. crews are battling an early- morning house fire in berkeley. we received this video just a short time ago. the fire started after 5:00 a.m. on bonita near delaware street in north berkeley.

no reports of injuries. but the red cross is on its way to help the several people who have been forced out of their homes. we'll have a live report from the scene at 7:30. the legal battle over sunnyvale's new gun law heads back to court today. a group of sunnyvale gun owners will urge a federal appeals court to strike down the law banning gun magazines that can hold more than ten bullets. the nra and other groups have fought the law which was overwhelmingly approved by voters last yearert the stakes are high as other california cities have moved to adopt similar regulations. those cities include mountain view, san francisco, and los angeles. facebook has decided to unfriend political campaigns. two years ago, the obama campaign used facebook to help reach out to voters. it worked. facebook helped the obama campaign gain a following of 45 million users in 2012. list team also used facebook and other tools to register

another than a million voters online. but as the 2016 presidential campaign nears, the social media giant is rolling out a change that will prevent future campaigns from doing the same thing. it's due to privacy concerns over third-party apps. some nfl teams received a surprise visit from federal drug agents. the 49ers were one of those teams. it happened right after they played the new york giants in new jersey. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now from our san jose bureau. you have reaction to all of this. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this reportedly happened to three teams after they played their games yesterday. the 49ers were in new jersey and they had just finished playing their game with the new york giants when agents came into the stadium. now, the inspections are all part of an ongoing investigation into alleged prescription drug abuse in the nfl. the probe grew out of a civil

suit followed by more than 1300 former league players, including former 49er jeremy newberry, who claimed the team created a culture of drug misuse with wide distribution. handing out addictive narcotics to mask plain so players would not miss time on the field. a spokesman for the 49ers was approached by the media after the inspection. >> there were random checks. [inaudible] >> all of the information -- that's all of the information we have. >> you guys can carry controlled -- >> no. we have medicine used for our players and sports teams. the doctors take that. >> everything is registered in the state of new jersey? >> i couldn't tell you that. >> during the inspections with team doctors throughout the

country, agents from the drug enforcement administration did bag searches and questioned team doctors. the 49ers said their medical staff complied and the team was able to leave metlife stadium as scheduled. there there were no arrests. back to you. >> thank you. speaking of the 49ers, it wasn't pretty yesterday. but they won their second straight game. they beat the giants, 16-10. in fact, the 49ers only touchdown was this 48-yarder from colin kaepernick to michael crabtree in the third quarter. but the 9ers' defense again played well. eli manning was intercepted five times. his last interception was on fourth and goal late in the fourth quarter. good to see this man back, aldon smith was playing for the first time this season. he was suspended for nine games for violating the personal

conduct policy. his suspension ended last tuesday. he didn't start the game but smith came in during the second quarter and smith said it felt like the first day of school. today marks one year since the oakland raiders have won a regular season game. the offense struggled once again against san diego. check this out. the first play, derrick carr fumbled the snap. chargers recovered. scored a touchdown and then beat the raiders 13-6. the raiders did win two preseason games over the summer. the last time they won was november 17th, 2013 again the texans. as the california drought conditions, some people's efforts to get water are verging on criminal. water districts say they caught construction crews hooking up hoses to fire hydrants. one company ended up being fined moor than $200. some homeowners in modesto were fined $1500 for repeatedly -- or reportedly taking water from

welcome back. a family in east oakland getting help after their 9-year- old daughter was hit by a stray bullet. she's paralyzed from the neck down. last may, jackie was playing outside her home when she was shot. she spent months in the hospital. doctors told her she would never walk again. well, yesterday, janice alamea and peggy tubor visited the family and brought support and some surprises. tuby says her brother was paralyzed when he was only 15. when he died three years ago, tuby started a foundation in his honor to help children with spinal cord injuries. >> she needs help. that was our first impression was this is a person that my brother put in front of us that said, hey, this is who you need

to help. >> jackie is the first recipient of the foundation. look at that. a check for $5,000 given to her mom. the foundation will deliver an i-pap, a wheelchair accessible van and a ramp outside of the home. jackie's mom said she was shocked by the gift and the kindness of strangers. an investigation underway in southern california after more than 1en 0 people became infected with the norovirus on a cruise ship. the 28-day cruise of the crown princess to hawaii and ta hitty returned to san pedro near long beach over the weekend. federal officials went on board collecting samples. passengers say after the people started getting sick, the staff took extra precautions. >> there were so many people walking around with little buckets of sanitizers, wiping down the walls and every time somebody got near the table, they were wiping down the table and the chairs. >> the cdc says it's now ready

for its next voyage. this is the second time the crown princess has had an outbreak of the virus. as north america's oil production increases, so too does the number of trains carrying vol la actual crude oil to bay area refineries and -- vol la actual crude oil to the bay to -- volatile crude oil. 2 investigates tracked this delivery of crude oil to the richmond rail terminal where two, 100-car trains arrive every month. but the state receives little information about the schedule and when the trains are coming or going through bay area neighborhoods. >> just like you would know where an amtrak train is and

when it's late to a station. we should be able to know about volatile shipments. >> 2 investigates this tonight. this morning there will be no supershuttle to bay area airports. the company spokesman says most of the drivers called in sick over the weekend as part of a protest. the company thinks the dispute is connected to franchise fees that supershuttle charges its drivers. drivers have asked for a better fee structure similar to what drivers for uber and lyft pay. other companies say they are picking up the other passengers while supershuttle is on hold. >> it's hard now. uber, they are killing us. this is great. usually it's a one-day thing. i will enjoy it while it lasts. >> as supershul of the vice president's says while drivers complained that the fees are too high. competitors like uber and lyft

don't have the same costs at supershuttle. he says the company hopes to settle this dispute quickly. 7:17. let's get everybody out the door. hey, sal, i know you are watching the east shore, everybody gave behaving for -- behaving for you? >> well, it's a little slow. i want you to look at the time. a 45-minute drive from the carquinez bridge out to the macarthur maze. you you will see it. there it is. that's kind of a long drive. on friday, it never reached more than 25 minutes. here it is 45 minutes. everyone is back to work and back to school. we haven't had any major collisions, we haven't had any of those things that we sometimes have, overturned trucks, that kind of thing. knock on wood, which is what my table is made of, we won't have any of that this morning. taking a look at the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up. the traffic will be okay as you drive into the city. but that's about a 35-minute drive on the nimitz freeway

southbound from 238 down to highway 92 and beyond that, into the hayward area, we have a lot of slow traffic there. the traffic will be okay after fremont into san jose. southbound 101 at highway 92, they are clearing up an injury accident. please, instead of using 101, why don't you use 280. 280 looks pretty good heading down from the burlingame or the crystal springs area down onto redwood city. now it's 7:19. let's go to steve in the weather center. we have mainly clear skies. it's cold out there. a lot of 30s or lower 40s. just heard from our observer tom in blossom hill. 41 degrees here. there are some 20s in lake county. clear skies, temperatures, well, they will rebound in the 60s to near 70. we'll get a few high clouds later on. a couple of people have been writing me, what do you mean?

a few high clouds later on. san francisco climate data, sunset is 4:57. it happens very quick. record low, 44, 1953. 82 back in 19 32. the record high, high clouds yesterday kind of coming down from the northwest. they've thinned out. they are close. but it's the system that came by yesterday, left in some cold air which is why it's cold. a frost advisory is out to the north. >> there it is from mendocino county to eureka and crescent city. it goes until 8:00. red flag warnings are out in san francisco for high fire danger. it's just amazing. 50, 70-mile-an-hour winds down there. the fire danger is very high all the way down to southern california. 17 in tahoe. 20 in reno. 36 ukiah. 27 was up in middletown in lake county. 8 in bismarck. 6 in billings.

minneapolis 9. reports of 50 inches of snow. chicago is 15. all the way to 28 down in dallas, 44 new orleans and now coming into new york city and washington up to boston, another system, this is the plunge of cold air. everything is kind of locked in. this is what we saw very similar back in jan, february, and march. there's one difference for us. 32 in napa, 30s for santa rosa, novato, fairfield, walnut creek, probably. 40s, 50s for most others. this observation is in the higher elevations. in town, i saw 32 in st. helena. it's probably closer to that. 30s for lakeport, healdsburg, sebastopol and petaluma. 30s, 40s up in the santa cruz mountains. the one difference from january, february, march, we did not have systems coming underneath the ridge of high pressure. january, february, march, we didn't have anything. this is a good sign if it holds. the problem is, or the challenge, i should say, there's so much cold air and so

much to the east of us , the systems stretch apart and split and the low holding all of the dynamics moves to the north. we just get the tail end and they weaken rapidly by the time they arrive. on wednesday, we'll probably get .10. we need inches. unfortunately, this isn't holding much promise. now, once you get to december, january, february, you can get a lot of energy coming across if this pattern holds. one system wednesday morning, not a lot. but i think we'll get a little bit out of it. maybe a stronger system by saturday. but until the pattern in the middle of the country, that deep system, i mean, that's just tremendous energy and you put snowpack on, it's tough to budge that. until that we get a lot of clouds and a little bit of rain wednesday morning. another system may come in thursday. i don't think that's much. but late friday into saturday, maybe. as you can see, there's not a lot of rain. there's a lot of clouds. cold morning, 30s for lows.

jeff daniels and jim carey, topped the weekend box office. dumb and dumber 2 earned $38 million. big hero ranked second, interstellar and gone girl round on the the top five. bo in. o badly injured his arm in a cycling accident in a new york park. this injury has forced the cancellation of what was supposed to be a week-long stint on "the tonight show." it seems the sicker is suffering a run of bad luck lately. just last week, a rare door flew off of his private jet as he was flying from ireland to berlin. 7:26. a bay area group is making sure thousands of u.s. troops will

have something special this holiday season. today, the group "operation care and comfort" they are sending hundreds of boxes to troops overseas. yesterday, they were at the san jose giants' stadium packing up hundreds of boxes with food, magazines, games and hygiene kits. michael parks is with the u.s. army, he's based out of moffett field. he's home now but received six packages in the last 18 years. >> i was in iraq and to receive the packages, it just brightens your day. >> now, julie me marie founded the operation 11 years ago in her garage. her dad served this three years. he missed a lot of holidays at home. she says everybody had something to contribute to make the holiday season brighter for u.s. troops all over the world. 7:27. mystery surrounding a gravely injured woman and a rural road. up next, pam cook will tell us

will see traffic backed up as you drive through. about a 35 to 40-minute drive if you count the drive on the bridge into san francisco. also looking at a commute on the san mateo bridge, it's pretty busy now. not all the way across but as you get on and a little bit of sluggish traffic continuing over to the peninsula. by the way, southbound 101, when you get there at highway 92, a motorcycle accident is on the shoulder. but traffic is backing up out of san bruno and millbrae into burlingame. it's all the way down to san mateo. 280 is slow passing crystal springs. i would still use 280 instead of 101. back to the desk. we're following developing news in berkeley. very tense moments this morning for people who escaped a burning home. it started shortly after 5:00 this morning on bonita avenue near delaware street in north berkeley. alex savidge is there with the

latest. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. it was a chilly morning. there's the possibility a wall heater started this large fire this morning. the good news, no one was hurt. seven people were forced out of this three-story victorian home as the place caught fire. flames were tearing through the place. we were told by the people who live here, there are seven people that live here. some of them are graduate students at cal nearby. here's some video from earlier. the fire started around 5:00. thisen is on the 1800 block of bonita avenue right near first avenue. it started on the second floor of the building and then quickly spread into the walls and up into the attic. that made it a difficult firefight. because of the size of the fire, the first crews who got here had to call for extra resources. we understand extra oakland resources were in while crews were battling the flame. this is a three-story home. it's broken up into seven

units. there are a lot of areas that are difficult to navigate for fire crews. everyone who lives here very grateful they got out. >> i woke up to banging. i don't know if it was neighbors. started creaming -- screaming fire! i looked outside of the window and i saw smoke. after that, i woke up everybody, there's a fire. we should leave. >> reporter: again, a total of seven people left without a place to stay this morning. they are being helped out by the red cross. we saw the red cross getting information from people this morning and trying to get them set up with a place to stay. everybody okay. no one hurt. all of the people who live here got out okay. no firefighters were injured. the investigation just beginning into how this large fire got started. the chief told me they are focusing in on a wall heater on the second floor of this building here. they believe that may have been

how this fire started. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:35. investigators in napa county still searching for answers in the mysterious death of a woman found on a remote highway. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom now with more on the strange circumstances, pam, surrounding the discovery of her body. >> this is a real mystery. the initial reports came in as a likely hit hit-and-run accident. but now deputies are considering that something more sinister may have happened. the woman was found lying in the middle of the road near calistoga earlier yesterday morning. it's a country road where you don't often see people walking. investigators say they did not find any signs that a vehicle was involved in a crash. officers say the woman who was in her 50s scuferred major head injuries. accords to the press democrat, she was airlifted to the hospital but died on the way. investigators are looking into several different scenarios. >> she was walking in a hit and

run. the other possibility, she could have been dumped in the roadway. we're looking at any possibility. >> according to the press democrat, deputies say the woman was only wearing a jacket and undergarments. highway 29 is a heavily traveled link between lake county and the bay area. so the napa county sheriff's department is hoping that someone has more information and will contact them. now, we have put in a call into the napa county sheriff's department for an update on the investigation and in we do get any new information this morning we're gonna bring that to you. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:37. new details about a hit-and-run accident that critically injured a man in walnut creek saturday night. it happened on walnut avenue and hutchinson trail. police say the man was not in a crosswalk and he ran into the street moments before he was hit. at first, police thought the car that hit the man was a dark-

colored suv. well well, -- well, now they say it was a dark-colored sedidn't. if you have any information, call police. a new report is bringing up cameras being approved. the american civil liberties union looked at data for cities already using license plate and body cameras and whether there was any public debate before the cameras were purchased. the cameras are becoming more widely used by law enforcement agencies. last week, the belvedere city council voted to add four cameras to read the plates of cars going in and out of the city. and they want to add two more. it may soon costing you to cross the border into mexico. there is a new pilot program underway. it would charge people here in the u.s. about $28 for a permit if you enter mexican territory for more than seven days. immigration officials say it's

designed to keep track of people in mexico including those who cross the border for work. but others are concerned this could affect mexico's economy. >> we have enough things going south, going down in mexico. you know, security and what have you to add another barrier or another excuse for not going into mexico. >> right now, the pilot program only applies to people crossing the border on foot but it may be extended to people crossing by car. the state department says no classified computer systems were affected by a cyber attack recently detected. the government did shut down the state department's entire network for unclassified e- mail. a senior official said technicians are fixing possible damage. there have been similar cyber attacks on the white house, the u.s. postal service and the national weather service in recent months. 7:39. the rnt as of an american aide worker killed by islamic state militants say they are

heartbroken but incredibly proud of their son's humanitarian work. isis released a video over the weekend showing the beheaded he remains of 26-year-old peter kassig. he was a former ranger from indiana who served in iraq and later returned to the middle east to help syrian refugees. >> he risked his life every day to, you know,ive sa the lives of people -- to save the lives of people that he didn't have any relation to we will forever be grateful for that. >> kassig was captured on october 2013 while delivering supplies to syria. he converted to islam while in captivity. chuck hagel says the u.s. military is fast tracking efforts to fight islamic state militants. he visited soldiers in fort irwin. he said troops in iraq have already started to train iraqi troops. the u.s. plans to train nine

7:43. the jack london square ferry terminal is back open after a two-day closure. crews spent the weekend installing a new gangway, repairing a security gate and replacing pilings. the work is part of an ongoing refurbishment project. new york city police hope surveillance video helps them capture a man they say deliberately pushed a man off a subway platform to his death. authorities are looking for this person. authorities say he pushed a 61- year-old man onto the tracks yesterday morning as the victim's wife stood next to him. >> it was a big commotion with the train. everybody was nervous and

charge december 8th. speaking of driving and parking, let's check in with sal, see how things are moving on the roads this monday morning. a little chilly but still clear. >> i'm looking at stuff here and i don't see anything out of the ordinary. as a matter of fact, we see just things that are ordinary here. as you look at 880 northbound, it does slow and the traffic continues to be just okay here. it's not something that we're not used to. so when i say things are okay. i would say, they are just okay. southbound 101 when you get over to the area here after the san mateo bridge, slow traffic because of an earlier motorcycle accident that's now out of the lanes in san mateo. now, if we can go to the maps -- osh to the toll plaza, first of all, the traffic is backed up for a 30-minute delay. we're seeing some improvement here. traffic on the peninsula, san mateo is slow in case you haven't heard me before. the crash is gone but if you are driving down to bayshore, it will be slow. 280 is getting into the act here.

the doctor being treated at a nebraska hospital for ebola has died. dr. salia was transferred to omaha on saturday and put in a biocontainment unit. he was at the same hospital where two other ebola patients were successfully treated. but dr. salia was in critical condition when he arrived. he was a native of sierra leone and a u.s. resident.

national guardsmen from the bay area may soon be headed to west arfry cau too help with the fight against ebola. the national guard announced yesterday a troop based in san francisco is among six national guard troops ordered for a possible deployment. the soldiers would not provide direct medical care to the ebola patients but would provide training for ebola and malaria prevention. the national guard said the soldiers would undergo i a 21- damon terring period when they return to ensure they've not contracted ebola. pope francis confirmed today that he will be making his first trip to the u.s. as poem the he will attend the world meeting of families in philadelphia in september of next year. the event focuses on strengthening family bonds. the vat -- vatican has not announced detailed plan but he's expected to conduct an out door mass that exwro would attract 1 million people. he's expected to speak at the u.n. in new york and go to washington to address congress.

happening today, the board of governors for california's community colleges will review a timetable for returning san francisco's city college to full local control. city college trustees would have to wait until july 2016 before getting full authority under a new plan from the chancellor of the state's community colleges. now, last year, the state tripped the elected trustees of their power as a result of the huge financial problems and the accreditation crisis at city college. this week, uc regents will consider the latest tuition hike plan for the university of california. the proposed increase would raise tuition 5% every year for five years. uc president janet napolitano said the regents are being forced to raise tuitions because state lawmakers are short changing the uc system. many students say they are caught right in the middle of this money battle. >> i'm cutting corners and

traffic here from about 238 down to fremont. we've had a couple of minor things. but pretty much this is the standard morning commute. you know it if you drive it every day. there are no breaks today. it will be just as heavy as it normally is. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. parishioners in san jose are wondering about the future of their nearly century-old church after it was badly damaged by a large fire. it began yesterday afternoon at holery cross catholic church in -- holy cross catholic church in san jose. we have reaction from the new pastor. >> reporter: we spoke to the pastor. he had a of you are night. he spent the night at a neighbor's house of one of the parishioner's. his voice broke a couple of times. was very emotional. we told him the altar was spare and the cross with jesus on it had not been touched.

he kind of broke down. behind me, you can see the sun is shining through the stained glass that's clouded with block soot. firefighters say this building is now in danger of collapsing. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon around 2:30. more than 100 firefighters responded but by the time they arrived, the flames ripped through the attic. crews had to hold back when the fire raged over their head. it took two and a half hours to contain. there's no official cause but the pastor believed it started on the second floor because of an electrical problem with the pipe organ. >> just closed the building. and five minutes after or seven minutes after, we saw the smoke around. i ran to the church and i saw in the balcony.

a senior official said the department recently detected what it calls activity of concern. unclassified e-mail systems were affected. over the weekend, the department shut down the e-mail system to upgrade security. so far, no word on who is behind the hacking but the state department says it's related to last month's hacking of computers at the white house. science fiction has become reality. the u.s. military has deployed the first laser weapon capable of destroying a target. it's on a u.s. ship patrolling

a family in east oakland getting help after their 9-year- old daughter was hit by a stray bullet and paralyzed from the neck down. the girl spent months in the hospital. doctors told her she would never talk again. well, janice alameo and peggy tuby visited and brought surprises. tuby said her brother was paralyzed when he was only 15. when he died three years ago, she started a foundation in his memory to help children with spinal cord injuries. and little jackie is their first recipient. >> she needs help. that was our first impression was that this is the person that my brother put in front of us to say hey, this is who you need to help right now. >> look at this. tuby gave jackie's mom a $5,000 check. also planned to donate an ipad, wheelchair accessible van and they will help build a better wheelchair ramp outside of the family home.

make the holiday brighter for the troops. not so great this morning. there will be no supershuttle service to bay area airports. the company spokesman says most of the drivers, they called in sick soeferrer the weekend. it's part of a protest. the company thinks the dispute is connected to franchise fees that supershuttle charges its drivers. the supershuttle case drivers have asked for a better fee structure, similar to what drivers for uner and lyft are paying. other shuttle companies and cabdrivers say they are picking up the extra passengers while supershuttle is on hold. >> it's hard now. uber, they are killing us. this is really great. usually it's a one-day thing. i will enjoy it while it lasts. >> now supershuttle's vice president said while drivers are complaining the fees are too high, competitors like uber and lyft don't have the same costs at supershuttle. he says the company is hoping to settle this dispute quickly. one of the south bay's most

liking what i see. it's taking almost an hour to drive between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. it hope -- i hope it doesn't become an everyday thing. no major problems. a couple of minor things. if you are driving that stretch be aware. that applies to you. let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's been a 350, 35-minute drive coming into san francisco. i also want to mention the east bay is kind of bad on the nimitz freeway. it's backed up from 238 heading down to fremont. we have they a couple of fender- benders there. taking a little over 30 minutes from 238 to highway 8 4. back to the desk. we are still following developing news from berkeley, several people escaped a burning home, just hours ago. this is where it happened about 5:00 this morning on bonita avenue near delaware in north berkeley. alex savidge has more on the many questions surrounding this

investigation. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, investigators are looking at the possibility a wall heater started this early-morning fire. the goods news out here, though, no one was hurt. a total of seven people sleeping inside this three- store victorian home when fire began to tear through the place. everyone was able to make it out safely. we're told there are graduate students who go to cal who live here. the fire started after 5:00 this morning here on the 1800 block of bonita avenue and it started on the second floor. according to firefighters, it quickly spread through the walls and up in the attic and became very difficult for crews to control. this home is broken up into seven separate units. that made it difficult for crews to navigate as well. one of the people who lives here said he woke up when a neighbor came banging on his door. >> i'm very thankful.

was wearing. now, the press democrat reports that several people called 911 early yesterday morning after seeing a woman lying in the road on highway 29 near calistoga. the paper said she was airlifted to the hospital but died on the way. now, it was originally thought to be a hit and run. but investigators now say it's a country road where you do not often see people walking. investigators did not find any signs that a vehicle was involved in the crash and there are still a lot of questions. >> there's a vehicle accident which in and of itself will be a hit and run. will be a major crime by itself. but we are looking at it as a potential homicide, yes. >> the other big clue investigators say they told the press democrat the deputies say the woman was only wearing a jacket and underwear. this is a heavily traveled lane between lake county and the bay area. so the napa county sheriff's department is hoping that

someone has more information and will contact them. we have calls into the napa county sheriff's office and hope to get updates throughout the day. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:35. new details about a hit and run that critically injured a man in walnut creek. it happened on walnut creek and hutchison trail. police say the man was not in a crosswalk and that he ran into the street just moments before he was hit. at first, police thought the car that hit the man was a dark- colored suv. now they say it was a dark- colored sedan. if you have any information on this, you are asked to call the walnut creek police. a hiker was rescued after he got stuck on a cliff at lake berryessa. the chp says the 20-year-old man was climbing when he fell several people and got stuck about 50 to 100 feet from the bottom of the cliff. a chp helicopter crew rescued the hiker and he was treated

for minor injuries. there is a new report raising concern, days after people in a marin county community gave their approval to cameras to monitor cars going in and out of their city. the american civil liberties union looked for dare da already using license pla plate and body cam -- data already used license plate and body cameras to see if the cameras were being purchased. last week, the bell ivy dear city council voted to add four cameras read plates going in and out of their city and want to add two more. water districts say they've captured and caught concuction crews hooking up hoses to fire hydrants. one company was fined more than $2,000. some homeowners in modesto were fined $1500 for reportedly taking water out of the canal.

a san jose congregation suffering after fire badly damaged its 100-year-old church. it started at jackson street at the holy cross parish. rebuilding is on the mind already of many people. tara? >> reporter: well, yes, the church pastor actually witnessed the fire. it greatly affected him. you could tell when he was talking with us. he said they will decide when and if to rebuild. this morning, you could see the sun shining through the stained- glass windows, clouded with black soot. firefighters say the building is now in danger of collapsing. yesterday afternoon, the pastor said he saw smoke after he locked up the church after mass and they flames broke out in

mayor ed lee will announce the big development plans for the current site of candlestick park. brian floor press is live -- brian flores is live with the economic impact plan for the city. >> reporter: we're out at union square talking with people out and about, perhaps window shopping before the stores open. we're talking to them about the candlestick area to go shopping there or to live there perhaps. as of noontime, mayor lee expected to announce what it will look like. we got a heads up from developer lenar corporation. these are artist renderings provided to us by them. mayor lee is expected to announce plans for the former home of the niners and giants and is expected to announce that it will turn into a $1 million pedestrian-friendly urban outlet shopping center. the area is expected to have 6,000 homes as well as a movie theater and hotel. along with the shipyard project also under construction, north

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 8:54. pope francis confirmed it today. he will be making his first trip here in the u.s. he's coming to philadelphia next september for the world meeting of families. the vatican hasn't given any details for his visit. but he's expected to conduct an outdoor mass, which may attract more than a million people. happening today, the board of governors for california's community colleges will review a timetable for returning san francisco's city college to full local control. city college trustees would have to wait until july 2016

before regaining full authority under a new plan from the chancellor of the state's community colleges. last year, of the state stripped the elected trustees of their power as a result of huge money problems and the accreditation crisis at city college. uc regents this week will consider the latest tuition hike plan for the university of california. the proposed increase would raise tuition 5% every year for five years. uc president janet napolitano says the regents are being forced to raise tuition because state lawmakers are short- changing the uc system but many students say they are caught in the middle of this money battle. >> i'm cutting corners and living right now. so i am pretty sure that will make it more harder than it already is. >> my parents won't be happy. i would have to get a job. >> uc regents will consider the plan during their meeting in san francisco on wednesday. governor brown, who opposes the
