felon could carry a stigma that could last someone's life but today we met a man who may see that disappear because of proposition 47. >> long, hard struggle. very long. >> reporter: he was convicted in a felony drug possession back in 1989 when he was 18 years old. he served at san quentin prison but getting a job was impossible. >> when you have felonies on your record nobody trusts you. nobody wants anything to do with you. you are not a real human being. >> reporter: after 25 years that is about to disappear. under prop 47 californians convict offend drug possession and many other low level crimes can ask a judge to have the convictions reduced to misdemeanors. that is a big difference.

in two weeks and it could take years to process the thousands of other cases under proposition 47. >> especially for work purposes it could be a huge change. thank you. a 69-year-old man who was wrongfully convicted of murder is awaiting his release tonight. yesterday a judge over turned the conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison for a deadly shooting. the decision was made after dna tests and evidence came to light. he served 32 years in prison. that is the longest wrongful incarceration in state history. back now to breaking news from the east bay, a major accident happened this afternoon that involved 10 cars on the north bound lanes of 680. ktvu's john sasaki is not far from the scene of the accident. they got this cleared up quickly, didn't they?

>> they did. i talked to contra costa county fire and they cleared it in less than an hour. i will show you. we are at the intersection of 24 and 680. all the headlights heading towards the camera, heading north bound on 680. on the right, coming from 24, you can see how backed up that is, 24 eastbound on to 680. the left, from the danville area. yes, indeed there were multiple vehicles involved in the accident. it happened around 2:40 p.m. this afternoon. and then one of the vehicles that was involved was flipped on its side, caught on fire. by the time firefighters got here the fire was out but they had to get a person in the vehicle out. that person was not injured very seriously but there were about 5 people taken to the medical center. i talked to the folks there at

the hospital, they had one person who was probably serious condition, so it looks like we escaped real serious critical injuries. of course, this is quite likely an accident collision caused by bad weather. of course, chp will tell you, even in bad weather all accidents could be avoided. so this is one of those situations perhaps someone was driving too quickly given the conditions. it is all cleared up here. bad news is, the traffic eastbound on 24 and north on 680 very, very backed up. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. back to you guys. we are learning more today about the hit and run death of a woman in napa county.

the victim was 57-year-old maria cruz pascual bejar. authorities believe she is from spain and was working at a group home. they haven't been able to contact her family even with help from the consulate. she was hit by a car on sunday. anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's department. in oakland police are investigating a home invasion in the fruitvale neighborhood about 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at a home on the 3100 block of texas street. no one was injured. investigators have not yet told us what was taken and no arrests have been made. san jose police are looking for an armed man who they thought was hold up in a home with children. police received a report last night of an armed man in a house across from a high school. there were 7 children and 2 adults in the house.

systems. let's look at what is happening right now. if you are waiting for a family member to get home, things are slow on the local highways as you know. you can see the green areas representing where the rain is coming down. this interchange by concord, towards the 680, had a problem out there with a wreck. a big wreck. causing delays. now it is raining and so that is going to slow things down. current rainfall around the area tends to be in the north and east bay. hayward you have shower activity. listen, there is more to come. this is storm system number one. it is the weakest one. the one tomorrow will have more and the one on saturday will have more. there is more rain coming your way. one of the biggest problem spots was in walnut creek today. an accident involving 10

vehicles on 680. it happened this afternoon and it triggered massive traffic back ups that are stretching into the evening commute. >> the dependent happened at 2:45 p.m -- the accident happened at 2:45 p.m. this afternoon. one of the cars caught fire trapping someone inside. authorities say it injured five people and at one point shut down 4-5 lanes of traffic. >> i want to put up the live traffic map. we have all of that red. you see there in walnut creek. red means traffic is barely moving. and 80, by the bay bridge, traffic has been very slow in both directions. a lot of red all over. a lot of the issues stemming from the rain. always slowing down traffic. >> rain here at home but snow in areas of new york. 7 deaths are blamed on a

devastating storm that swept through upstate new york. >> more than 5 feet of snow fell in buffalo. in new york to tell us what the area will be facing next. >> reporter: a blast of winter that covered cars, and left a path of death and destruction in its wake. >> we found on an individual today, 46-year-old male, car was buried under 12-15 feet of snow. >> snowplows are hard at work trying to keep the roads clear. 100 people were stranded as the storm refused to let up. he says he was stuck on the freeway for more than 38 hours before he was finally rescued. >> i was going to pull off but they haven't plowed the exit so you couldn't get off the highway. >> reporter: she asking people to stay -- he is asking people

it is exciting news from the surface of a comet. scientists say the probe detected carbon in the atmosphere. that means comets may have delivered the building locks of -- blocks of life to our planet. it was set back before the battery went dead. they are hoping it will get more sun light and the battery will recharge. the daughter of one of the new york city firefighters who died on september 11 today officially became a new york city firefighter herself. she received her diploma today and was congratulated today by the mayor. her father was one of more than 300 firefighters killed trying to save others at the world trade center. she says her mantra was make him proud. >> waiting for this day my

a consumer group called on the c.p.u.c. to resend a decision that gave pg&e and four other utilities $68 million in rate payer money. 29million went to pg&e for energy efficiency. today they said it was the product of corruption. e-mails disclosed by pg&e shows c.p.u.c. president and pg&e made a secret deal. >> the president said he would give pg&e $26 million of rate
