sox. a ninth of unrest as protesters took to the streets in ferguson, missouri and here in oakland after learning a white police officer will not be indicted in the deadly shooting of unarmed black 18- year-old michael brown. the protests in missouri turned violent with cars and buildings being set on fire, while in oakland on the right side of the screen, hundreds of protesters blocked traffic on the freeway for hours. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell the cleanup has begun in the area as business owners deal with the destruction. the family of michael brown, the unarmed 18-year-old shot and killed by officer darren wilson, is still calling for peace and justice. >> everybody not just the entire st. louis community, but

all of america join us in demanding change. making a difference for the lives of our children and for the sake of our communities, especially for michael brown, junior, who is crying out from the grave with so many thousands of other people of color who have been killed by police say, you all have to change this system. >> this was the scene in ferguson, missouri last night after it was announced that officer wilson was not being indiptsed by a grand jimp. indicted by a grand jury. there were 80 arrests. about 300 people marched during the lunch hour today outside of the courthouse and more demonstrations are expected to happen tonight. >> there are organized events planned, marches. we will make sure those individuals have the right to

their voices heard but criminal activity will not be tolerated. >> stores and vehicles were set on fire. in some cases, the fires were left to burn themselves out because firefighters said it was too dangerous to enter the area. and ktvu's sal castanedo is now live in oakland where a number of stores were vandalize -- vandalize -- vandalized. >> reporter: you can still see damage. this starbucks had all of the windows busted out. it was a free for all for a bit. it's closed as work erks are repairing damages. last night several businesses had windows broken or spray painted. this is a block from the oakland police station. business owners say some of the vandalism occurred when officers were present. san francisco had protests. damage was not as bad, nowhere

near as destructish as ferguson, missouri. >> obviously it's very sad. i know the family's wishes were for peaceful demonstrations. i think everybody wishes that's been the case. >> reporter: in oakland, protesters marched from downtown oakland all the way to the grand lake district and head id toward the freeway. oakland police and chp formed a barrier. people managed to get by them. >> the freeway is shut down between 14th avenue and lakeshore. 500 people on the freeway. about a half-mile of cars on the freeway. >> reporter: the chp says the crowd grew to about 2,000 before it could be taken off the freeway. >> justice for michael brown! >> reporter: in all, most people we spoke with say they sympathize with the anger but notes with des are destruction. >> you want people to have the opportunity to voice their opinions but it's sad that violence has to be a result of that and that broken windows

who chose not to wear seat belts. two of those crashes happened on 680 just last week. >> their vehicles overturned and because they are not wearing their seat belts, they die. >> reporter: the chp says there will be an increased presence trying to discourage distracted driving. >> there is a chance for people to celebrate too hard. we want to make sure we're out there enforcing dui laws. we also want to keep speeds down. >> reporter: the maximum enforcement period starts tomorrow and goes until november 30th. in pleasant hill, cara lui, ktvu channel 2 news. major storm back east could make thanksgiving travel a mess for millions all over the country. a nor'easter is expected to dump heavy snow or rain. airport delays are preict -- prior dicted in new york, philadelphia, boston and washington, d.c. rosemary is

tracking the storm. it is going to be treacherous for some. let's look at what's happening right now. we'll go to the north edge of the country where we have rain and snow from washington across the northern plains. it dips down into colorado as well as utah. now to the east coast where this is the storm that will be intensifying in the next day or so. right now, florida and atlanta are seeing active weather. a mix of rain and thunderstorms. but this is going to be moving up the eastern seaboard as we get into the busiest travel day or one of them of the entire year. let's pick it up for you tomorrow morning. notice rain is pretty widespread at this point. and as we get into the second half of the day, it continues to move to the north but a mivtion of rain, snow and wind -- mix of rain, snow and wind expected on this busy day when folks will be out and about and taking their travels. also for the ohio valley and areas in this section also going to see some very active weather. as we get into the second half of the afternoon on wednesday

san francisco police are investigating a suspicious death that's been ruled a homicide. police say the victim is a 63- year-old man who was found dead yesterday afternoon around 2:30 on essex avenue. they say they have no suspects yet and are trying to determine what kind of weapon was used. the san francisco teachers union is announcing a contract agreement that it says will help keep teachers in the city. united educators in san francisco issued a statement saying the tentative agreement includes a 12% raise over three years and that will help make the city more affordable for teachers. the agreement also includes

more prep time for elementary schoolteachers and more hours for high school counselors that helped get students into college. teachers must vote on the agreement by december 11th. it is official. the panda has a new habitat. pablo sandoval is now a member of the boston red sox. he's back in bean town today picking up his new gear. the red sox introduced their new third baseman a couple of hours ago at fenway park. he was their primary offseason target. he signed a five-year contract with boston reportedly worth $95 million. >> take me a long time to be sure that i'm gonna make the right decision. you know, the giants give me the opportunity to be in the big leagues. the giants' fans one of the

best. >> he's bound to be a fan favorite in boston. he said even though he appreciated his seven season and world series everyone in san francisco he wanted a new challenge. santa clara tax payers could be on the whatting for part of the ex -- could be on the hook for part of super bowl l for a dozen events leading up to the super bowl at levi stadium in early 2016. the city is launching a campaign to raise private funds to pay for the events which include a parade and a big fireworks show. but tax payers could have to pay part of that bill if that fund-raising drive falls short. sheriff's deputies in santa cruz have opened an arson investigation after more than a dozen cars were damaged or destroyed over the weekend. it happened yesterday morning in aptos. sheriff's deputies say they initially found two cars on fire on townsend drive and then another on fire on aptso beach drive. cars with broken windshields

and dented hoods were discovered. in all, three cars were destroyed. 20 others were damaged. sheriff's deputies say vandals left behind gas cans, burnt road flares and a broken baseball bat. so far, no arrests. oakland is considering an ordinance that could keep the circus from coming to town. a city councilman introduced the measure that would ban the use of bull hooks by elephant trainers. he says the sharp points on the device cause the elephants pain. >> the only way the circus can be in oakland is by causing animal and suffering, then we shouldn't have the circus in oakland. >> an executive said bull hooks are not inhumane and are the only approved tools for working with elephants.

two state lawmakers from the bay area are announcing legislation to charge pedestrians and bicyclists a toll to go across the golden gate bridge. phil ting and mark levine are unveiling a bill that they say will protect public accession to the world-famous bridge. last month, they agreed to consider the toll because of growing budget problems. the government announced new rules for calorie information at restaurants and takeout counters. the fda says menus must now list calories from cat, saturated fat, sodium, sugar and protein. the rules apply to chain restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, grocery store takeout counters, most movie cheaters, amusement parks and even vending machines. businesses have until november of next year to comply.
