those national guard the. attorneys for michael brown's family said the grand jury investigation was broken and unfair. >> we're going to hold out hope that at some point justice will be served. and then we're going to allow the chips to fall where they may. >> let the record be clear, you have broken our hearts. but you have not broken our backs. >> tonight officer darren wilson remains on administrative leave. >> reporter: but today he did speak publicly for the first time. officer wilson sat down with

george stephonopolis. he said michael brown hit him first. >> what i said is get back or i'm going to shoot you. his response he grabbed the top of my gun. when he grabbed he said you're too much of a [ bleep ] to shoot me. as he's doing that, i can feel him trying to get over my trigger guard and try to shoot me with my own gun. >> reporter: officer wilson says his conscious is clear and he knows he did his job right. officer wilson says the brown shooting was the first time he has ever used his weapon. demonstrators are gathering right now in oakland for a second night of protests. news chopper 2 is over the crowd right now bringing you live pictures. they started at frank ogawa plaza. as you can see from these live pictures, the crowd now marching toward the oakland police headquarters right near interstate 880. >> we have live team coverage there'ving. john fowler has been talking --

we have live coverage this evening, john fowler has been walking with those protesters. >> but we begin with noelle at a peaceful protest so far. >> reporter: they are. it's hard to tell where they are right now, they are two blocks last time i could tell it looked to me about 100 protesters it might be more than that now. we are now back on broadway. we've essentially made a full circle in about the last 15 or 20 minutes. these protests started at 5:00 tonight at frank ogawa plaza. and then at 6:00 pretty much sharp they started to move. it looked like police were anticipating this because the streets were closed ahead of them as they marched, there is a line kind of at the end of

this lock block where you can't see them. now it appears we're marching now back toward frank ogawa plaza. again this has been a very peaceful protest. now as it really kind of spread out over at least a couple of blocks of people, it's very difficult to tell how many people have joined in as this has gone through the streets but we have seen no trouble just people voicing their opinion. >> all right, noelle walker live there on broadway as those protesters march back up toward frank ogawa plaza as she said keep in mind if you're going to be in downtown oakland there could be delay there is on broadway because of that fluent situation. oakland police say they've learned some lessons from last night's demonstrations where some 1,500 protesters marched through the city. they blocked traffic on interstate 580 and they damaged several businesses including a

starbucks on broadway and also the smart and final. john fowler has talked to business owners and how they were impacted by this. what are people saying there. >> reporter: this is in the area where there was such severe damage to several businesses. about 10 businesses over all. right now you can see the police have blocked off broadway and are keeping the protesters from coming any farther this direction. but the business owners i talked with today were frustrated and they were hoping tonight that police are better prepared. behind boarded up broken water. workers were cleaning up. managers tell us looters monday night broke into the store and stole merchandise worth $40,000. >> for everybody who did this, you know shame to you. you know it's like, we're hard working people trying to make a

living for our families. >> reporter: he told me the looters left this flier behind. the starbucks coffee shop also on broadway so badly damaged, workers said they couldn't open at all. at the smart and final, crews stacking up pallets. they told us vandals broke into the store stealing liquor and other items. >> i am just sad that we can't come to an understanding. >> reporter: understanding is what city leaders say they want as well. >> i think last night it was very difficult. one of the longest demonstrations we've had in a long time. it also had more people that we've had to deal with in a long time. >> reporter: police say the crowd of 1,500 to 2,000 quickly grew. that mutual aid officers from the chp and contra costa county were called but could not prevent the lawlessness. in addition to the store front looting, at least one vehicle

was looted. they are preparing new tactics which they declined to specify. >> we will try to divert the protest where they're not allowed to march. >> reporter: right now police have set up some what of a scrimmage line. the other part of broadway is now open. the city officials have been urging the protesters all day to keep this peaceful. to be respectful of what the brown family back in ferguson has been asking for. that this protest be nonviolent. reporting live in oakland, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. and we will of course continue to monitor these protests throughout the night for you. oakland police say three of their officers suffered minor injuries during last night's protest. the chp oakland officer sweeted this picture. a chunk of concrete was thrown

at police. oakland police chief shawn wentz says officers also were hit with rocks and bottles. and we want to take you back to ferguson to show you where some of the buildings that were burned down are located. this is a map of ferguson. down here would be st. louis. over there would be the st. louis airport. this is where michael brown's body was found. this is the ferguson police station. we showed you those pictures with all of the national guard troops guarding the police station. that's where that is. all of the pink areas here that's where buildings were burned down. for example here. we have the wall greens, completely leveled. all together about 25 buildings were destroyed. down here we have another one a

beauty world. it was destroyed. most of it, they were boarding up some of it today. the owner of the building next door came out and was crying because she was concerned that her building next to this beauty world might be next. we have another building right over here. this was an o'reily auto parts again burned to the ground. finally up here a delwood conoco gas station burned to the ground. a lot of violence. some of the worse violence in ferguson last night since michael brown was killed but as we've been saying, 2,200 national guard troops have now been deployed that's up from 700 last night. you might be wondering why didn't they have 2,200 out there last night. apparently they were saying they thought 700 would be enough. but now they have upped that, tripled that and they have a lot of national guard troops deployed along with all of the police and the mutual aid and so far at least in ferguson tonight from what we've been

gathering it has remained calmed. a lot of buildings still smoldering today from that fire that was set. here is a look at helicopters flying over ferguson surveying the damage. a man who says he shares a unique bond with the parents of michael brown is on the way to ferguson missouri to show his support. johnson is the uncle of oscar grant who was killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer. we spoke to johnson and talked about why he is frustrated with the brown case and what he plans to say to the brown family. >> you said you found him guilty. >> reporter: sharing his personal experience in the classroom, bobby johnson spoke to this ethnics study class. >> how many of you know the story of oscar grant. >> reporter: grant was shot by mehserle on new year's day.

mehserle was convicted of manslaughter. and similar to the way protesters hit the streets in oakland after the ferguson decision last night, protesters hit the streets. the common theme here is frustration. >> every time it goes to the grand jury, comes back and you know the officer is not held accountable. no indictment that causes us to become outraged, angled, mistrustful. >> reporter: after johnson leaves this class he is getting on a plane and heading to missouri. >> i'm going to meet mike and sharing with him you know he's not alone. >> reporter: he's talking about michael brown sr. >> telling him we've been through that before. >> reporter: this is not the first time johnson has met with brown. he joined in the peaceful protests. johnson says he was not surprised by the grand jury's decision last night. >> of course it reopens the wound and sometimes i have to

work on catching my emotions because it is painful. i mean oscar didn't have to die. nor did michael brown. >> reporter: since his nephews death, johnson has made it his personal mission to share his perspective with others who like him wants to see changes in how the justice system handles these officer involved shooting cases. the evidents of the last 24 hours made today's panel discussion even more timely. allie rasmus. it's not just the cost of cleaning it up. >> these huge insulation that hogged up two lanes was rolling toward me. >> the impact and efforts to ensure driver safety. after the break tracking more rain into the area as we head toward the holiday weekend.

underwear today. the spanish clothing check kicked off the holiday shopping season with an undie party at their store on powell street. the first 100 folks in line in their underwear got a free outfit. after a few hours in the cold, the folks told us the thought of free clothes was pretty appealing. >> probably a jacket and a skirt. anything to keep me warm. >> yes, a coat i think definitely. >> it's cold, i'm shaking. >> reporter: some folks actually started waiting in line at 11:00 last night but they say that the give away -- look at all those people. >> a lot of people are just in their underwear. >> they say the give away was worth it. >> and imagine for people who are visiting california and they say, i've heard about california. it's going to stay cool in the mornings but daytime highs

have been warm. into the 70s in some places that gets you the spare the air day tomorrow. that's fair weather pattern that will get you the lesser air quality. so the bay area quality district is asking us to car pool if you can and do our best. because tomorrow's air quality won't be the greatest. that's going to change the wind to an off shore and that's what's going to take the chance of rain away. the temperatures are mild out there now. with east winds, that's the east wind going from the east to west. southeast wind in santa rosa. temperatures right now are in the low 60s and upper 50s. this high pressure center has been with us. will stay with us through thanksgiving. so it's going to be nice. what we had today is what we're going to see tomorrow. what we're going to see on

thursday then on friday it starts to deteriorate. into the weekend, the high winds move in. not just one storm system but a couple. we're going to see showers friday night and they linger into monday. maybe a little bit into tuesday morning. here's just a broad brush further out. here we are on saturday. you see where the jet stream is. i just wanted to give you the idea. that far off the models can't get real specific. dry, wet, windy, cold. whatever. anything big they can pick up. the timing on that we're going to have to dial it in as we get closer. just note between now and thanksgiving steady as she goes. the five day forecast with the bay area weekend, clearly in view. and there it is. plenty of sunshine. and rain develops as we head into your bay area thursday. >> i like that little bird there. >> that's the turkey. hard to see.

mark is here now. they're getting a two-fer. they're getting sandoval and they're getting the panda. >> they're a little tougher back there in the east. pablo goes into a slump he'll be hearing about it. but today nothing but roses for pablo as he tries on that new jersey and all giant fans, it's going to take them a while to get used to that sight there. sandoval is a boston red sox and we won't be seeing him wear san francisco on the front of his jersey. as you well know by now, it's a brand new deal. the red sox spending some money. they spent close to 1 million on pablo and henley ramirez. and pablo talked about joining the former giant ramirez.
