>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. >> this extra police officer standing by. businesses are closing early as oakland prepares for a possible third night of protests. good evening everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. we want to go to ktvu channel 2 news' john fowler. police are not taking any chances and trying out a new tactic. john? >> reporter: that's right. i spoke to oakland's chief of police who told me the chp cars you can see parked on broadway underneath highway 880 are part of a new strategy to use chp to protect the freeways so oakland's police officers can better protect the businesses. the chief acknowledged should have been better protected. about ten businesses suffered damage. this mobile store cleaned out

by looters. and protesters were misguided. >> it is not going to fix anything. it is not going to change anybody's decision and it happened somewhere else, not here. >> reporter: people who witnessed this said it is unbelievable that police let it get so far out of hand. >> their show of force was like a dollar short, a day late. >> we tried to make a mass arrest. we arrested 92 people last night. the arrest on the freeway took up a significant number of our resources. >> reporter: just a few yards from where looters ransacked the kelly moore paint store. >> there is a great community out here. we low a lot of the protesters helped us and looked out for us. >> reporter: shawn kennedy showed us inside the bike storement he said a handful of demonstrators broke the front doors and the security gate but others argued against looting.

none of the expensive bicycles or equipment were touched. >> you didn't lose anything? >> nothing wrong. >> reporter: we are back live now. you see one protest group tells us it plans to have a protest begins at 7:00 p.m. at frank ogawa plaza in downtown oakland. we have a crew there now and we will bring you updates as they are darned. >> and we will continue to watch throughout the night. thanks john fowler. now to missouri where police made more arrests today in saint louis after some protesters stormed city hall. >> some of the demonstrators made it inside the building. extra police were called in to clear them out and city hall was locked down. and in ferguson, community members are still cleaning up the damage following two days of protests there. >> i think a lot of people have been the rough parts and the destruction, but there have been a lot of people out here

the headlights headed north are very busy. now a live picture of highway 101. those are the lanes on the left. it has replained pretty much the same over the last hour. powerful storm on the east coast is causing significant flight delays at bayer airports. travelers who are headed to the east faced up to a three hour delay. it was an hour-and-a-half delay. the wait right now, travelers going to newark, new jersey are experiencing delays of nine hours, two minutes. the situation on the east coast much better. a beautiful day here. expected to be beautiful tomorrow for thanksgiving. rain is headed our way. that could impact weekend travel plans. >> we could get a lot of rain. chief meteorologist bill martin is here. maybe up to six inches? >> exactly. a lot of rain coming right through the weekend, but it doesn't really start until after thanksgiving so traveling around here not a problem.

traveling back east, not so great. you have a nor'easter. there are powerful storms delivering a lot of snow. they have seen a foot of snow in boston. newark, new jersey. boston is reporting delays over an hour-and-a-half. but they have the green up on there meaning it is getting better. newark has delays over an hour- and-a-half as well. you see atlanta, seattle, los angeles, chicago, good thing there is we are not seeing a ripple effect. if a big airport like boston gets messed around, that messes with chicago which messes with atlanta all the way down the line. so things on the travel, not as bad as we have seen on holiday week like this. when i come back, we are going to talk about our travel and get back from where you are going because the weather, the mountains, there will be snow. around here, there will be rain. see you back with all the specifics. all right, thank you bill. many people around the bay area

are already starting to cook their holiday feast as ktvu channel 2 news' john sasaki found out today. all of that cooking and prepping is getting people in the holiday spirit. >> reporter: in the east bay is young's market. it is like plenty of small town grocery stores. >> this is our second busiest day of the year. >> reporter: 150 families preordered their turkeys. >> it is exciting. it moves fast. so yeah. it is a great community. >> reporter: the community includes mimi who picked up a 22-pound bird. >> that is a very big bird. >> it is. and i will butter it up and put it in the oven and cook it tomorrow morning along with all the other things i'm cooking. >> reporter: 90% of the turkeys sold here were preordered. many of them brined for customers. >> i have never done that

among dozens of people there along with police forces in santa hats and young carolers. they are hoping to help the church reach the goal of 9,000 toys by december 20. well south by sports bay, it says it has had such a good year. it is wanting to do something to help others. people who work at the blue chip in san jose say the giants world series championship provided a big boost in business and now, as ktvu channel 2 news' ann reuben shows us, they are getting ready to host a thanksgiving meal for the homeless. >> reporter: they have been cook all day. hoping for a big turn out. a good year for the giants meant a great year for the blue chips sports bar in san jose. >> everybody knows they won the world series. and also brought a lot of more income to our facility. so, we wanted to give back this year. >> reporter: and so a place that

normally does cheese steak will do turkey. >> we are going through a couple of homeless shelter ins need letting them know about it. we went through a couple of churches. >> reporter: he is expecting 150 to 200 people. since they have never made thanksgiving for this many people before, he recuted his father, a chef of 40 years to prepare a meal. >> thousands of people everyday. 200 is nothing for me. >> reporter: there hay be more mouths to feed. the blue chip will be open to sports fans all day too. >> we will have the cowboys and the 49ers. >> reporter: staff has been asked to work double shifts but most don't seem to mind. >> i am really hoping they pack in here. >> reporter: deanda says he has a lot to be thankful for this year. >> i want to thank the giants for the great season they gave us around the opportunity to give back to the community. >> reporter: the blue chip

and stole a maintenance truck on sunday morning. surveillance video then shows him in terminal b after he parked the truck outside. it is unclear why he was headed to that terminal or how he managed to get into the secure area. a judge released him on a promise he will return to his next court appearance. new at 6:00, they have give us some of the most compelling images when they happen. such as this video from the napa quake. the donees are a new frontier. the faa will release proposed rules related to the use of drones an other unmanned aircraft. tom vacar takes a look. >> reporter: he is a farmer who oversees his crops with a drone. about to ruenzel afoul run afoul with the law?

drones are a cutting edge new technology. >> we are in an unregulated environment. >> reporter: tom zimmer is an expert in the industry. it looks like the faa proposes to fire anyone who uses a drone commercially to get themselves a pilot's license. but, what kind of pilot's license? >> we don't know. the only type of pilot license you can get is for manned operations. >> reporter: whether it is $60 or $600 or $6,000. they are all under faa jurisdiction because they fly. a drone will have to be registered with the faa in case the drone is lost or harms someone. even pure amateurs not affiliated with anybody could find themselves in trouble or

in need of a license. with so many drones out there. federal requirements may be ignored and fall to the wayside like cb radio licenses failed in the 1980s. >> if you have rules that proit will what a lot of people will be going and they will be doing it any way and you have to means to enforce it, it is still a question. >> reporter: this is far from settled. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. we are learning more information about the man killed in oakland hills last night. police have identified the man as 60-year-old david ruenzel. he was a prominent oakland writer and teach nor antioch. he has done writing for the bill and melinda gates foundation. he was an avid hiker.

shot and killed in the huckleberry preserve. witnesses reported hearing three gunshots at 3:45 yesterday afternoon. on the trail, investigators found shell casings and a bullet. they are trying to track down his killer. police are increasing patrols in union square after a pair of smash and grab robberies. at 3:00 this morning, someone drove a car into the chanel boutique on maiden lane. it is a narrow street closed to vehicles during the day, but open to cars at night. there is surveillance video showing two people involved. >> there is one driver and for the passenger that took the items, you cannot tell if it is male or female, but it is a suspect wearing a hoody. he has a mask over his face. >> police say the prada store just around the corner was also hit by drive-in burglars about three weeks ago. let's talk more about the weather now. we have realwet tore talk

about. bring in chief meteorologist rain on the way. >> not just one, but a series of events that will bring us a lot of rain after thanksgiving. so as we move into the holiday weekend, saturday, sunday, monday, into tuesday, we are going to be looking at a lot of rain. day after day of it which is good. hard to say how much right now. but estimates are coming in at three to five inches and the heavy locations, maybe seven to eight inches. that's a lot of rain. remember, that is over the course of four days. so it is not undoable, but it is a lot of rain. more than we have seen in a while. tomorrow, a nice die. thanksgiving, a perfect day traveling around here. the valley fog not a big issue. there's been a little bit of it in the central valley. it shouldn't slow you down. no worries. the niners playing down at levi stadium, the weather is perfect. that will be a fun game to watch. temperatures will be in the low 60s . that's an evening game. 5:30. so take a jacket. you saw the moisture plume

extending out into the pacific by the date line. that moisture plume is going to slide in on this low pressure center and it will stay put. usually the lows translate through. this one is not going to. it is going to sit and spin and take the moisture and some of the energy impulses with it and slide them right through. one after the other. so that will go on right through tuesday. maybe a little bit into wednesday morning. so we will track that for you. the forecast highs tomorrow, mid 60s . 69 in concord. 70 in antioch. just a nice looking day. san jose, 69. 70 livermore. 69 redwood city. friday, looks pretty good, too. friday afternoon, the clouds are really increasing. and then it is game over. it will basically be wet and you need umbrellas, but tomorrow, and friday, not bad. then it goes south from there. we will see snow. we will see all sorts of advisories as we get into the monday period a after we see a

>> a thanksgiving tradition in san francisco today brought out the mayor and the police and fire chief. it is the annual turkey carving for the harbor light center. they got things started and volunteers took over and all together, 4,000 pounds of turkey were carved up today. the salvation army served 3500 meals to the people home bound this thanksgiving. good for them. mark is here with sports. parriers just finished. and they are really one of the teams to beat this year. >> it is getting ridiculous. they are toying with other teams an off to the best start ever in franchise history and their best start ever on the
