few minutes, how so many are able to serve all this food. steve, how is that holiday forecast? >> we don't have fad on our face, right? >> no. we do have a few high clouds out there. transition day is today. we are dry. we don't have to worry about any rain today. maybe not until saturday morning. high clouds. 40s mainly and 50s on the lows. there are a few 30s. also our forecast football, seahawks and 49ers, it will be in the 50s. high clouds. a puff of a breeze. not that strong. first system coming in, usually doesn't do anything after very strong high pressure. it was absolutely a mountain on wednesday. it's weaker now. we have to wait for a couple systems to get their act

together. probably not until late friday, early saturday. hazy on the skies. a little rain. that's lifting north of crescent city. a couple 30s. lots of 40s and 50s. they will give way to partly sunny skies, mostly cloudy to the north. upper 50s to near 60s. not the 30s that we saw a couple days ago. forecast for rain looks promising. not until probably late friday more likely i would say on saturday. this might be a little overdone, but it does look like we will get some rain on saturday. it's sunday and then next tuesday where there is absolutely no consensus. high clouds. hazy. patchy morning fog and 60s. sal is off this morning, but we do want to give you an important traffic update. all lanes have reopened on 880 in hayward following a deadly multi-car crash. this happened just before 2:30 this morning near the west a

street off-ramp. chp says five cars were involved. one person was killed. another has life-threatening injuries. not a great way to start a thanksgiving morning. a driver was taken into custody after trying to leave the scene of the crash. elsewhere, this is a live look at the ktvu traffic map and it's showing the area right now where that crash happened. while all lanes are open, there is a little bit of red there. but that should be gone soon as the chp is called off the sig alert because of that deadly crash at 2:30 this morning. another stretch of 880. moving very well. just a bit north in oakland traffic moving nicely near the coliseum. just a few headlights there. people getting an early start to their destination on this thanksgiving morning. a suspected side show busted in the east bay. dozens of people were cited or arrested overnight at the port of oakland. tara moriarty live this morning where hours later remnants of

that can be seen? >> reporter: there is lots of tread marks in the roadway. you know, when people tried to scatter they had nowhere to go because chp sealed off the roadway in front of the port and there are barbed-wire fences on either side. if we pan down, you can see this huge black circle and this is where they were doing doughnuts, obviously. normally, the marks are spread out a little bit more. so the fact that these tread marks are right on top of each other shows how active this side show was. we called the chp this morning. we didn't give us numbers, but they told us about 200 people were here. some were able to get away. at least 100 suspects were rounded up. the chp spent hours doling out citations, hauling some suspects off to jail, and towing cars. officers did have a plan to arrest as many people as they could. >> the special response teams were trained in certain tactics. one of the tactics is how to block this crowds. we were able to use our training in this instance to block

everyone in, prevent the escape routes. we lost a few people. some people were able to get out. we blocked in a majority of them. >> reporter: officers received a report of gunshots but they don't believe anyone was hurt. there was also a fire at the side show. we don't know how it started, but it might have come from a car trying to ep scape through a fence. police have been challenge bid these side shows which have shut down bridges and freeways over the years. >> i have been covering side shows in oakland for the last decade. it worked for officers last night. thank you for that report. 7:07. happening now volunteers getting ready to serve thousands of thanksgiving meals to the less fortunate. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge live in san francisco with a look at the preparations underway at the salvation army.

>> reporter: i am on gravy duty. i think they gave me the easiest job. all you got to do is scoop some gravy on there and make sure it doesn't get all over the place. there are hundreds of volunteers down here. hundreds of generous folks. did i get enough gravy on there? might need a little more. these are generous volunteers who have come down here this morning to give their time to prepare these meals. these are all to go meals, as you can see. they are putting them in boxes because they will be hand delivered to folks who are unable to leave their homes. and either because of illness or age they can't leave their home. they seal them up right here. this is the crew right here that does the sealing. lori kawasaki is one of the folks involved in the operation here. you are at the end of the assembly line this morning. you live in south san francisco. you have been here a long time?

>> 13 years. >> reporter: and you have the whole family. this whole side of the table is roy's family here. >> yeah. >> reporter: you have been coming here 13 years to give your time. tell me why you do this on thanksgiving. it's early in the morning. you could be sleeping right now. >> you got to give back. her mother worked here for like ten years or so. so she used to do the books. >> reporter: i am getting backed up here. >> it's good. and do you think about when you are here and preparing the meals, do you think about the people they are going to? >> yeah. >> reporter: what they mean to them? >> it means a lot to them. sometimes they don't get a hot meal. especially on thanksgiving. >> reporter: thank you very much, roy, for the hard work that you do on thanksgiving. your family and all these volunteers. really means a lot. 3500 meals preparing here. boxing them up. we have about a half hour or so from now folks will start arriving with their cars and they are going to put these

meals in their cars and then they have a whole list of people who are unable to leave their homes. again, they are going to hand deliver the meals. it's more than a meal. they get that back. that means a lot on thanksgiving. that's what the holiday is all about. back to you. >> glad to see you got your gloves on, too. you figured out how they week. good looking meal. nice job. thank you, alex. knew to our continuing coverage of the protests against ferguson grand jury digs. for the third straight night demonstrations in oakland erupted in violence. police say some protesters broke away from the main group and started vandalizing businesses. windows at an ampm vietnamese store -- convenience store were shattered. they also scrawled profanity, anti-laced graffiti. ktvu news cameras recorded oakland police handcuffing and arresting a number of people.

the police department announced early this morning they made 35 arrests last night. police say the arrests were for vand limb, resisting arrest and failing to disperse. 135 people were arrested on monday and tuesday nights. >> the main demonstration last night was largely peaceful. about 200 people first gathered. they then marched down broadway towards interstate 880. some demonstrators tell us they support the cause. not the violence. they say they stopped marching once they sensed trouble was brewing. >> for us to come together and to come united as people no matter what race and get stuff heard and us seen out there is really awesome. >> we march peacefully. and then when they started rioting, that's when we dispersed. >> some of the demonstrators say they came from as far away as

tracy. meanwhile, some businesses in oakland concerned they will get sandlized during the -- vandalized during the protests are defending their storesnd property. a ktvu photographer captured a couple of security guards fighting a group of protesters. in one incidents, a guard was on top of a man. a woman comes over and tries to hit the guard on the back. no one seemed to be seriously hut. we are told that one of the guards took away a baseball bat that the protesters used to smash store windows. >> and in ferguson, missouri, last night protesters turned out in smaller numbers as snow fell on the city. protesters gathered outside the ferguson police department. the building was surrounded by national guards men as business owners in ferguson start cleaning up after two days of violence protests. they are asking why the national guard wasn't sent in sooner. ferguson's mayor said he asked the governor for help but that help arrived too late.

many of us will gather around a thanksgiving table with many reasons to be grateful. one family in the north bay says they have a lot to be thankful for after a near tragedy on a

cliff. a little boy from santa rosa who recently fell more than 200 feet down a cliff. >> reporter: the sweeping views of the pacific ocean are dramatic and here in bodega bay is where the drama began for a santa rosa family. >> kind of devastating really. hard to sit by and watch my son suffer. >> reporter: jamie guglielmino has basically been living at ucf children's hospital in oakland since her son sebastian fell 200 feet to the beach below. rescue crews repelled down to him. >> he has a broken orbital socket and broken cheekbone. his left cheek had several fractures and his nose was fractured. >> reporter: he suffered a broken leg and broken arm. >> it was literally split in

two. >> reporter: he was in a coma for nine days. when he finally awoke. >> oh, he was such a relief. i felt like my heart was being put back together again. >> reporter: but the little boy who loves dressing up becca police officer and "teenage mutant ninja turtles" has yet to speak. jamie is hopeful words will return. meantime, she grateful for other things. just yesterday she took sebastian for his first walk around the hospital in his wheelchair. >> nobody drops that fall and lives. my son is a miracle. he is amazing. he is coming along faster than we expected to. >> reporter: jamie looks forward to the days when he doesn't need the wheelchair, the feeding tube or team of doctors and nurses. she is thankful they exist. >> it's special to be spending my thanksgiving with my son. we might not have had him. >> reporter: do you think about that? >> i do.

i think about how lucky we are. >> and thanks to heather holmes for that report. sebastian receives therapy four times a day. he is expected to remain in the hospital for another one to three months. 7:16. the east coast is digging out from a went are storm that snarled thanksgiving travel and left hundreds of thousands without power. maine, vermont and new hampshire could see snow today. new york should only get a dusting, which is good news for spectators at the thanksgiving macy's thanksgiving day parade. the winter storm did force airlines to cancel more than 740 flights on one of the busiest travel days of the year. more than 4700 flights were also delayed. this morning airlines are reporting 396 cancellations according to the website flight aware. there are currently two cancellations and 13 delays at

sfo. about 46 million people are expected to travel for the thanksgiving holiday, and that is the most since 2007. bay area freeways were packed with drivers traveling home for the thanksgiving holiday. a look at some of the big back-ups last night on interstate 880 in berkeley. traffic was also slow on highway 101 in san francisco. aaa says lower gas prices are contributing to the holiday rush. chp will have extra patrols through the road on sunday looking for drunk or speeding drivers. here is a live look at that same camera showing hospital curve on 101 in san francisco this morning. no major incidents to report there as traffic is great in both directions. one more look, too. it's the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza area. a dozen cars or so making their way into san francisco. you can see some of the high clouds out there, steve. rain staying away from us for the moment, at least. maybe not the weekend, but right now? >> that is correct.

noel walker at the starting line where some of the more serious races are. >> reporter: we just got the two-minute warning for the elite men to start running. they are lining up and running back there right now. they are getting ready it cross. we are at the start line right now. about two seconds ago the elite women took off. if you blink you miss them because they run by so quickly. these are women who run five-minute miles. there is also a costume contest associated with the silicno valley turkey trot. that's the really fun part of this event. i was told 400 people registered for costumes. there were a couple dozen people there to judge. some of the more interesting ones we saw, a panda suit. he said he was going to run in the panda suit. in fact, one of the judges make him test it to see he if he could run in it. he said he bought the costume

to halloween, he wanted to wear it to the giant game. so he decided to wear it to the turkey trot. we are getting ready for the elite men to start and cross this finish line. not finish line. start line. they will be at the finish line, too, in a blink of an eye. then at 8:30, what i call the normal people will start running their race. that's a 5k and there is also a 10k race associated this. if you have kids who want to run this, by the way, they can still register for the kids fun run and that starts at 10:00. >> we saw the video of that little baby in the turkey costume. very, very cute. >> oh, my gosh. that cracked me up. the mom is a chef and the kid is a 10-pound 9-ounce turkey. >> so fun. great race. great group of people down there for a great cause. thank you, noel. time is 7:34. happening today you can also get

some exercise while supporting a good cause at the hayward plunge this morning. in fact, it's the 13th annual karen gordon thanksgiving day turkey swim. and this is a very special event for us here at ktvu because karen was an intern at ktvu and also a swim coach and lifeguard at the hayward plunge. she was a very special young lady. sadly, she was killed in a car accident on her 19th birthday heading to work. swimmers are asked to donate $4 to swim. the money goes towards two $1,000 scholarships awarded annually by the hayward recreation and park district. it started at six this morning and continues to 11:00 a.m. also happening right now, a special indigenous people's sunrise gathering on alcatraz island. this is video of people boarding the ferries in francisco this morning. hundreds people gather every thanksgiving morning. it's a commeration of the

19-month native american occupation of alcatraz that began in 1969. organizers say they also want to draw attention to what they call the true story of thanksgiving. that would be the massacre of indians by european settlers. well, the generosity of strangers, many of them ktvu viewers who we know are totally awesome, well, they are giving a youth football team from richmond an awful lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving. this week we told you about the richmond steelers cadets. they won the state championship, but they needed at least $20,000 to make a trip to the national tournament in orlando, florida. they didn't have much money and their manager set up a gofundme account but only raised $1,900. well, after we featured the story on our ktvu newscast donations started pouring in. and look at this. the team surpassed its goal of $29,000. the manager is so grateful for the community's support.

49ers hoping to exact revenge against the seattle seahawks tonight. fans may be stinging from that loss in the nfc championship game. both teams have a record of seven wins and four losses right now. so they really both need a win tonight to improve their playoff chances. a lot at stake here. remember that? should have been a touchdown. i just checked. 9ers one and a half point favorites tonight. that's kind of close. kickoff is at 5:30 at levi stadium. if you are tempted to head to the game, need something to do, a lot of tickets are still available at levi stadium and even below face value. >> good to know. i may have to call home and tell them i will be a little late for dinner. starting tomorrow ktvu is proud to support one warm coat. our annual coat drive. this is the 12th year ktvu is involved. in that time, we have gathered an estimated 55,000 coats for people in need. ktvu's claudine wong took a look at those who the one warm coat

drive hopes to help. >> reporter: every day people line up outside st. anthony's dining room, one after the other waiting patiently for a warm meal. for kayla and her 2-year-old daughter. >> it's a big help. it cuts your food cost by a third. >> reporter: which means a lot. >> my husband and i separated and he kicked us out, myself and the baby. >> reporter: and as the weather drops, concerns rise. >> a coat definitely doesn't factor into the budget. >> reporter: and she is not alone. last week's rain was a reminder that winter is coming. >> we received a lot of requests from guests that are on the streets and they are soaking wet and needed coats. >> reporter: those are the people the one warm coat drive hopes to help. the organization started in 1992 with one goal. collect coats to give to those in need free of charge. >> there is a big need.

especially with the winter months coming up, like the coats go off our racks very quickly. >> reporter: ktvu has once again partnered up with one warm coat and collections will go to st. vincent de paul in walnut creek. city team ministries of san jose and st. anthony's in san francisco. the response to this holiday tradition has been nothing short of overwhelming. piles of coats quickly grow bigger than the girl scouts who help collect them. for st. anthony's the year is already spent distributing free clothes. but they call that coat drive. >> total game changer. last year we received around a thousand coats. >> reporter: kayla is planning to get in line. a welcome certainty in an uncertain time. >> we will be happy to have that. >> reporter: there is a lot on her plate. more than we realized when we first sat down to talk to her. >> yeah. one more person and due to have my next in about seven weeks.

adventures? >> oh, yeah. i love taking my dogs with me everywhere that i possibly can. i travel a lot. thankfulfully, i got to bring my dogs, too. they love to be active. and because i have always had them by my side from the very beginning, they have learned how to travel well and to do all those activities right alongside with me, alongside me. so this thanksgiving i am so blessed to be able to talk about them and talk about all the other rescues that we have on our show that we need to find forever homes for. to just get those statistics out there that there are 8 milan -- million animals in shelters across the year. sadly, approximately 4 million don't make it out. if people want to bring a four-legged family member in their home, please adopt and rescue and see how it ask change the path of a soul. >> i think it's interesting hearing people talk about their

today a lot of high clouds and temperatures 30s, 40s, 50s. most of the lows up due to that cloud cover. alamosa 39. a lot of 40s. and we have some fog up into mendocino county. you are like, what sunrise? i can't see it because of the fog. rainfall projections are okay as we go into saturday. my concern is they will cut back some of these amounts. it does look like saturday morning will be a rain day. after that, though, we may have to wait a couple days. high clouds. hazy skies. patchy morning fog. 60s and a few couple little low 70s. the days are very short. it is 8:02. as we mentioned, sal is sleeping in this morning but we are keeping an eye on traffic. there was a really serious incident overnight on interstate 880 in hayward. all lanes are back open now. at one time all northbound lanes at 880 and hayward at the west off ramp were closed because of

a deadly multi-vehicle crash. as you can see, really no traffic at all now. wide open. normally you would see some congestion but the road is clear right now. over to the macarthur maze, once again smooth sailing for people driving this holiday morning. we do want to remind you the chp as well as local police departments across the bay area have started maximum enforcement throughout this holiday from today through sunday night. they are going to be looking for speeding and drunk drivers. so drive carefully. and now some folks may be flying out today or heading to one of the local airports to pick up a loved one who is flying in. this is a live picture of sfo. the skies are quite clear. as for the roads nearby, highway 101, 380 and 880 looking good. traffic to the oakland and san jose airports are doing well. >> dozens of people were cited or arrested at the port of

oakland. tara moriarty joining us live there. remnants of the side show still can be seen? >> reporter: there are tread marks and speed bumps. that has greatly deterred the drag racing but hasn't stopped the side shows from happening as evidenced behind me. you see this huge black circle. a compilation of the tread marks from the drivers doing doughnuts. we called the chp this morning and they could not provide exact numbers, but we're told that about 200 people were here. some were able to get away. at least 100 suspects were rounded up. officers sealed off each end of middle harbor road to trap the drivers and onlookers. >> once we blocked tem in, we were able to slowly identify everybody. right now we are in the process of identifying everyone that was involved. we will have to taken force. action on most of those parties. that can range from citing them out to taking them to jail to towing their cars. >> reporter: officers received a report of gunshots, but they don't believe that anyone was hurt. there is also a fire at this

side show. we don't know how it started. we are told it might have come from a car that tried to escape by ramming through a fence. police have been challenged by these side shows through the bay area which have shut down bridges and free freeways. oakland police were tied up with the ferguson protesters. >> tara, thank you for that report. 8:05. volunteers getting ready to serve thousands of thanksgiving meals to the less fortunate. ktvu reporter alex savidge live in san francisco with a look at the preparations at glide memorial church. that is such a special place, alex. >> reporter: it really is. especially on thanksgiving and around the holiday. a lot of volunteers donating their time to come down and help those less fortunate in this community. here you go. this is the hard work that has to be done. someone has to carve up these hams. they have to carve up the turkeys. you can see the whole operation

here. they have about 500 people who come down and volunteer their time here on thanksgiving to prepare meals for 5,000 people. that's the undertaking here this morning. there is a line already outside. in fact, what they are doing right now is they are serving breakfast to folks who come down to glide right now. and then the meal service, the thanksgiving meal service is going to get started in, let's see, in a couple of hours. right about 10:00 is when they are going to start serving the thanksgiving meals. a lot of work. a lot of activity here this morning as they get all that turkey ready for folks who may not otherwise have a meal on thanksgiving. that's why these meals are so important. i want to bring in reverend cecil williams. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. >> reporter: thank you very much for having us down here this morning. let me ask you, first of all, about the hard work here. what do you think about the folks who come down and give their time on thanksgiving? >> you see, i think it's important for us to focus on

the volunteers because many times we don't let people know that what they have done and what they are doing and what they will do is they lift us up. keep us going. and we become a tremendous resource and a tremendous service to a non-profit group like glide. >> reporter: you can't do what you are doing here on thanksgiving or any other day of the year without them? >> always. always. and people need to know that. very much so. so all of you out there, let me just say to you right now, keep coming. keep coming. just don't come on thanksgiving or on christmas. come every day because we are open every day. and we are serving people every day. >> reporter: very good point. they need to not stop? >> that's right. >> reporter: when thanksgiving is over or christmas is over, you need folks here? >> always. >> reporter: you have a very big crowd. there is a line outside. >> yeah. >> reporter: it helps a lot. happy thanksgiving. and i appreciate you taking the

salvation army's harbor lights center on 9th and harrison streets in san francisco. many of the volunteers are graduates of the salvation army's drug and alcohol recovery program, helping to give back. and people camping out at stores to get holiday bargains, they are in the homestretch. there been people lined out outside the best buy store in emeryville since last week. we wanted to know why they spent days outside on the sidewalk. jeff and tanya taylor are not doing this for themselves. jeff is the principal of a middle school and one of his former students is fighting leukemia. he is doing this for 16-year- old darrell aikens. >> we raise money. we walk and we raise money. so the money is going towards buying him whatever he wanted. he wanted a playstation 4. we are going to give him a playstation 4. >> best buy is not the only big store open on thanksgiving. big lots stores around the bay

area opened at 7 this morning. local kmarts opened at 8 a.m. many other stores, including toys 'r us, macy's, and target opened this evening. you can see a full list of stores and their thanksgiving day hours, that's at ktvu.com. tonight at 8:00 ktvu is airing a very special show called fox's cause for paws. it's an all-star spectacular hosted by hillary swank, aimed to help rescued dogs find loving homes. this tireless work is carried out every day around the bay area including the silicno valley humane society. a special program starting tomorrow to find homes for older dogs. >> reporter: there we go. in typical silicno valley fashion. humane society is a state-of-the-art facility where the animals have private suites while they wait for a forever home. >> it's about that special magic that happens when animals and people come together and we want to celebrate that magic. this is a happy place.

>> reporter: it's no wonder. the dogs have an amazing quality of life while they are here. there is a dog park for running and playing. volunteers to give a lot of tender loving care and music. >> we have piped in music, too. and that helps them become and we want to make sure that they are as relaxed and comfortable as possible while they wait to find their new home. >> the they arery is. >> reporter: the theory is a happy dog makes a great pet. a special promotion starting friday until the end of december. all animals over the age of 6 months are $12. there are thousands to choose from. >> this is tiger lily. >> reporter: volunteers say tiger lily is a love bug and quite a character. there is figaro, who was rescued from another shelter and needed surgery for a very painful hernia, but he is now healthy, loves kids and is ready for a

all-star dog spectacular airing tonight at 8:00 on ktvu channel 2. a new feature that will track which other apps you have installed on your phone. the feature is called app graph. the company says it will be a way for twitter to deliver more relevant content to its users. twitter says it is not collecting any information from those apps, but it is already raising privacy concerns. especially since users have to opt out of the app graph rather than sign up for it on their own. the 49ers, i think they will be thankful for a victory over the seahawks today. also, a youth football team from the east bay has a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving. the generous donations that will allow the team to play in a national clipper tournament. but first, many have wondered where did darren wilson go after the michael brown shooting? the police officer from ferguson, missouri was able to hide in plain sight.

. 8:16. in ferguson, missouri last night protesters turned out in smaller numbers as snow fell on the city. protesters gathered outside the ferguson police department last night. the building was surrounded by national guards men as business owners start cleaning up after two days of violent protests. they are having why the national guard was not sent in sooner. two men are facing charges accused of plot to go -- plotting to kill the chief of police in ferguson, missouri,

and the prosecuting attorney for st. louis county. according to reports, the two men were indicted last week after they tried to buy pipe bombs from undercover officers. the men were arrested three days before this announcement that ferguson police officer darren wilson will not face any charges for killing michael brown. authorities say the two men were also planning to bomb the gateway arch in st. louis. meanwhile, attorneys for darren wilson are speaking out about his life in hiding. wilson went into seclusion after his home address was posted online ten days after michael brown's shooting death. he stayed with family and moved from house to house. he also used techniques he learned as an officer to disguise himself if he had to go out in public. wilson was also advised by his attorneys not to speak publicly ahead of the grand jury decision. winter storms forced airlines to cancel more than 740 flights on one of the busiest

travel days of the year and more than 4700 flights were delayed. well, this morning airlines are reporting more than 400 cancellations according to flight aware. there are currently two cancellations, 13 delays at sfo. about 46 million people are expected to travel this thanksgiving holiday. that is the most since 2007. >> i travel every other year. so it's kind of nice to be home for the holidays. >> especially with the weather back east. >> exactly. the weather here not too bad today. rain is heading our direction. >> saturday had a nice tweet from sal casteneda. >> he is awake? >> he watches. he tweets. by the way, it started snowing just at the macy's parade. just started snowing. >> really? >> yeah. a lot of high clouds here and a very happy thanksgiving. congress messages this morning. thank you. facebook. twitter. whatever. e-mail. send them in. i am in a writing back mood this morning. a lot of hazy skies.

northwest from seattle to portland to medford. it's lifting just north of crescent city as well. 40s on the temps or 50s. these will rebound into the 60s to near 70 degrees. some of the higher elevations are very warm. 50s to almost 60 degrees in part of the santa cruz mountains. 30s to 60s depending on the elevation. 51 loss aloe hills. 41 san mateo. 41 ukiah. 45 fresno. even sacramento everyone is in there pretty close. it is weakening the ridge of high pressure. the rain won't be in until late friday for some to the north. more likely saturday for us. the key will be if we can get this system to ton punch in on sunday. if we do, wet get some rain into monday. my concern is it will be delayed a little bit as it digs offshore and puts on the air brakes, if you will. 60s. also 70s on these temps. the only concern really for the sierra nevada to saturday would

more than 200 feet down a cliff. >> reporter: the sweeping views of the pacific ocean are dramatic and here in bodega bay is where the drama began for a santa rosa family. >> kind of devastating really. hard to sit by and watch my son suffer. >> reporter: jamie guglielmino is has been living at ucf hospital in oakland since her son sebastian was rushed here november 10. the four-year-old suffered critical injuries when he fell from this steep rocky cliff more than 200 feet to the beach below. also cue crews rappeled down to sebastian and hauled him off the cliff. >> he has a broken orbital socket and broken cheekbone. his left cheek had several fractures and his nose was fractured. >> reporter: he also suffered a broken leg and broken arm. >> it was literally split in two. >> reporter: sebastian was if a coma for nine days and when he

finally awoke. >> oh, huge sense of relief. i felt like my heart was being put back together again. >> reporter: but the little boy, who loves dressing up like a police officer and "teenage mutant ninja turtles," his casts are turtle green, has yet to speak. jamie is hopeful words will return. meantime, she is grateful for other things. just yesterday she took sebastian for his first walk around the hospital in his wheelchair. >> nobody drops from that far and lives. so my son is a miracle. he is amazing. >> reporter: jamie looks forward to the days when he doesn't need the wheelchair, feeding tube, or team of doctors and nurses. she is thankful they exist and deeply thankful her son survived. >> it's really special to be spending me thanksgiving with my son. we might not have had him. >> reporter: do you think about that? >> i do. i think about how lucky we are. >> again, heather holmes

valley turkey trot. the most popular race category is the 5k walk and run. it's for people who don't have all that time or energy to train tore a longer race -- for a longer race or want to enjoy it with friends or older or younger family members. noel walker has been down on the streets for us. a lot of creative costumes out there. looks like a big crowd, as well? >> reporter: a lot of turkey hats running by. they started the gun -- i was going to say an hour ago -- about a minute ago. and this is what a wall of people looks like running. i am told it's going to take them probably 15 minutes to get all these people through, and that's because this is the largest time to turkey trot anywhere in the u.s. more than 26,000 people registered for this turkey trot this year. that's about 2,000 more than were registered last year. the elite runners took off about an hour ago. so they have long since finished. that's part of the race. you have a lot of people still

hanging around here either waiting for the fun run that starts in about two hours, or they are just here to watch the fun and be a part of the whole event. part of this event is the costumes. and there was a costume contest a little bit earlier this morning. we saw some really interesting ones. there were people who went as thanksgiving dinner. the guy who went as the turkey. he probably drew the short straw on that one. a kid dressed as a panda. he said he got that suit for halloween and wanted to be able to wear it to the giants game. now that the panda is gone, he decided he would wear it for the turkey trot every year. he wants to wear that costume someplace else. the best one i saw, i have to say, was a mother and child, the mother was a chef, pushing a crib -- not a crib -- a stroller that was made into an oven with a ten pound nine ounce turkey named jack. very, very cute. coming back here live, we have got another wave of people that are getting ready to come

through here. 26,000 people again signed up for this race. just a huge event. it's also a charity event. they have raised more than $4 million in the years they have been doing this. and this year they are hoping to raise another $1 million for five local charities. this event is going to be going on for the next couple of hours. the streets of san jose will be closed as they come around to the finish line. but a great way to start your thanksgiving because then you can eat guilt free. you have already burned all those calories you are going to eat later on. >> noelle, a valid point. burn the calories and dive in when you are ready to go with family and friends. >> i like the hat. i. speaking of the weather, steve, we are in good shape today? >> fine today. >> okay. >> pro bely most of friday. >> good. >> saturday. a lot of high clouds.

hazy skies. patchy fog. some of that fog very thick but not widespread. just a few reports. so overall just a little haze and high clouds today, but dry. temperatures a little warmer on the lows. they will be about the same on the highs. maybe down a degree or two. probably not the mid 70s for downtown oakland because we are loseing that easterly breeze. for the 49ers today about the same. high clouds. 64 at kickoff. 50s into the second half. the first system running into a mountain of high pressure, which is about 30.50 inches of mercury on wednesday. if you have been having headaches this week, that might have been the reason. just really strong high pressure. well, this system is not doing much, but it is weakening that high pressure system and there we are going to wait, hopefully everything swings in underneath. sunday the system may kind of clowe down a little bit and take its time getting here. there is no consensus on the forecast models yet. a lot of high clouds. temperatures will continue to struggle a little bit on these

highs due to the cloud cover to the north. to the south should be upper 60s to near 70s. a lot of 40s. had a few 30s. those look like they are gone now. not much of a breeze. out of east, that's relaxing a little bit. 40s on the temps. petaluma, lake port, everyone is really close. a lot of rain in the pacific northwest. not for us. hopefully it will swang in here. this is the rainfall projection. nothing today. friday this is a little quick but late friday night into saturday. saturday it looks like a rain day. so far they have not cut back on the totals yet. we will see. sunday could be a cloudy, windy day or more rain. approximate if it slows down or stalls, it will be more cloudy than windy. high clouds today. 60s and 70s on the temps. probably the last day on any 70s because by tomorrow a lot more cloudiness. rain late friday. saturday morning into saturday about noon and then we will ease into sunday, monday, tuesday.

francisco. wide open there. again, don't go over the speed limit. now some folks may be flying out or heading to one of the local airports to pick up a loved one flying in. nationwide, there are still some canceled or delayed flights from the weather back east. this is a live look at sfo. highways 101, 280, and 380 on the peninsula looking good. and traffic to oakland and to the san jose airports are doing well. a reminder, though. there is no golden gate ferry service today and many public transit agencies are on a holiday or weekend schedule. mike. a 12-year-old girl has set her sights high. very high. she wants to climb a 22,000- foot mountain in south america. 12-year-old angel moore has already climbed mount kilimanjaro. the highest point in africa. she did that two years ago, reportedly the youngest girl ever to reach the peak. next month she is planning a 19 day expedition and hopes to be

the youngest girl ever to reach a peak in argentina. her father will join her on that climb. she hopes to raise $100,000 for a non-profit organization called children international. today you can get some exercise while supporting a good cause at hayward plunge this morning. it's the 13th annual karen gordon turkey day swim. karen was an intern at weather watcher and a swim coach and lifeguard at the hayward plunge. she was killed in a car accident on her 19th birthday as she was heading to work. swimmers are asked to dough the nate $4 to swim -- donate $4 to swim. the money goes to two $1,000 scholarships awarded by the park district. the swim started at 6:00 this morning and will run until 11. it is 8:38. pretty crazy story out of boston where a naked man was arrested after he fell through a bathroom ceiling and ran through the airport. this happened saturday during the busy holiday travel rush at

logan international airport. police say the man was in the women's bathroom when he took off his clothes and climbed into a ceiling crawl space and then fell. he has been accused of running through the jetblue terminal naked, biting another man on his ear. family members say he is not mentally ill. he is a financial manager who has been taking extension classes at harvard. he is facing a long list of charges, including assault. the generosity of strangers, many of you, ktvu viewers, has given a youth football team from richmond a lot to be thankful for. we told you about the richmond steel erika debts. they won the state championship but needed $20,000 to make the national tournament in orlando. their manager set up a gofundme account but only raised $1,900. after we featured the story in our newscast donations started pouring in. the team has surpassed its goal. the manager says he is very grateful for the community's

support. and the 49ers hope to exact revenge tonight against the super bowl champions the seattle seahawks. fans may be singing from that -- sting interesting that heartbreaking loss in the nfc championship game. both teams have a record of 7-4 on the season. they need a victory to improve their playoff chances. the 9ers are one and a half point favorites. kickoff set for 5:30 at levi stadium. a lot of tickets are still available even below face value. 8:40. an important case with far reaching implications on social media goes before the u.s. supreme court next monday. justices will consider whether language posted on social media sites such as facebook is covered by the first amendment's protection of free speech. the issue before the court is whether a facebook message can be considered a true threat by a reasonable person. a pennsylvania man was sentenced to four years in federal prison for several facebook posts

threatening his has estranged wife. once again, starting tomorrow ktvu is proud to support one warm coat with our annual coat drive. this is the 12th year ktvu has been involved, and in that time we have gathered an estimated 55,000 coats for people in need. ktvu's clawedea wrong took a look at those who the one warm coat drive hopes to help. >> reporter: every day people line up outside st. anthony's dining room, one after the other waiting patiently for a warm meal. for kayla and her 2-year-old daughter. >> it's a big help. it cuts your food costsly a third. but which means a lot. >> my husband and i separated and he kicked us out, myself and the baby. >> reporter: as the weather drops, concerns rise. >> well, a coat definitely doesn't factor into the budget. >> reporter: and she not alone. last week's rain was a reminder

that winter is coming. >> we received a lot of requests from guests that are on the streets and they are soaking wet and needed coats. >> reporter: the organization started in 1992 with one goal. collect coats to give to those in need free of charge. >> theres a big need. especially with the winter months coming up. like the coats go off our racks very quickly. >> reporter: ktvu has once again partnered up with one warm coat and collections will go to st. vincent depaul in walnut creek, city team ministries in san jose, and st. anthony's in san francisco. the response to this holiday tradition has been nothing short of other whelming. piles of coats quickly grow bigger than the girl scouts who help collect them. for st. anthony's the year is already spent distributing free clothes bucks they call that coat drive. >> total game changer. you know, last year i believe we received around a thousand coats. >> reporter: kayla is already planning to get in line.

lady. in addition to acting and running a production company, you recently launched your own charity called the hilaru foundation. tell us about that. >> the foundation is my name and my late dog caru put together to make hilaru. essentially, what it is, is it brings kids who have been given up on and animals who have been abandoned to help heal each other. so i'm super excited about it. and this show, fox's cause for paws, kind of leads right into it because it's about animal rescue. it's kind of the first step in my mission, in my goal. so it was gun to be able to executive produce this and that fox gave us the platform to really celebrate dogs and the joy that they bring to our lives. >> yeah. and i read a quote from you. you said ef day when i look at my pets i know they are thankful that i have adopted them, and i am just as thankful they have adopted me. what do pets bring to your

life? >> well, i feel like all pets, but for me because i specifically have dogs, they have pure love. they just look at you with pure love. they are in the moment. they refriend you to be in the moment. they are resilient. they are just joyful. and i just feel like they see us for who we really are. and they really have changed my life. i say who rescued who. >> yeah, i am sure a lot of people feel that way. now, i know that you are quite an outdoor aficionado you like to do anything that is involved outside doors like skydiving and river rafting and skiing. do you take your dogs out on some of these adventures shh. >> others, yeah. i love taking my dogs with me everywhere i can. i travel a lot and tankfully i bring my dogs with me.

they have learned how to travel well and do those activities alongside of me. i am so blessed to be able to talk about them and talk about the other rescues that we have on the show that we need to find forever homes for and to just get those statistics out there that there are 8 milan malls in shelters across the united states ef year and sadly approximately 4 million don't make it out. if people do want to bring a four-legged family member in their home, please adopt and rescue and see how it can change the path of a soul. >> it's interesting to hear people talk about their pets because they are the big equalizer. no matter what your status is people are pet lovers and they bring so much joy to our lives. i think it should be a wonderful show. >> that's a great way to say it. an equalizer. i think ultimately the show is going to be funny. we have a lot of funny segments. a lot of -- we have a cutest
