people to go shopping tonight, amber. >> reporter: we're inside the best buy here in emoryville and the gm tells me 2,000 people lined up to get inside the store when the doors opened at 5:00 p.m. the line started back on sunday. the idea black friday starts on thanksgiving thursday. judging by the lines and the size of the crowd, the appetite for a thanksgiving meal is matched by a thanksgiving deal. consumers are looking for more than just a discount, they're looking for special officers. >> this is the ticket you get. so if you get a tv this is the ticket you get. >> reporter: these people were camped outside so that they would be among the exclusives to get a flat screen tv. >> it's such a great deal. >> would you do it again? >> no, not probably on

thanksgiving day but definitely black friday. >> reporter: opening on thanksgiving day doesn't necessarily mean people are buying more. in many cases it motivates some consumers to shop today instead of tomorrow. best buy's gm says there's a shift in how the store is operating on thanksgiving and black friday. instead of staying open through tomorrow, the store will close its doors at 1:00 a.m. and will reopen at 8:00 tomorrow morning. and best buy will be offering different deals on black friday to entize customers to come back and encourage others to come line up outside. >> i don't think it'll be as long, but i hope it is. it'll be great. >> reporter: old navy is among the retailers deploys a different strategy. it was among the first to open its doors today at 4:00 p.m. and plans to stay open until midnight tomorrow. half off of everything and the deals will stay the same through black friday. >> we have jeans, we have some

starting out tomorrow morning. by late in the afternoon until friday night we're talking about the chance of scattered rain showers here in the bay area. especially up in the north bay. this is just the beginning of a very unsettled weather pattern. look at that multiple rain clouds. we're talking about significant rainfall. heavy rainfall. we'll break down the timing of the first round of rainfall heading into the bay area as we head into the weekend in just a few minutes. berkeley police are looking for three men who kidnap and robbed a couple at a popular scenic overlook. a man and woman were parked on grizzly creek boulevard when they were approached by the three men. two robbers were armed with guns and the other with a baseball bat. one suspect got into their car and forced a couple to drive to the atm and withdraw cash. the robbers are described as three white males driving a red four door car. authorities are hoping for a calm and peaceful night in oakland following three straight nights of protests that damaged businesses and

impacted traffic. 35 people were arrested last night bringing the three day total to 170. ktvu's john sasaki tell us how tempers flaired outside at least one business. >> reporter: our ktvu camera was rolling as protesters allegedly vandalizing businesses ended up on the wrong stop on broadway. but in most cases no such protection of property existed. dozens of businesses had broken windows or graffiti or both. >> it outrages me because as a citizen of oakland we're way more progressive than this. >> reporter: outside the foot locker, anthony wilson said one of his friends was mistakingly arrested while watching the protest. >> they actually separated him from his sewn. >> reporter: wilson says he agrees with the protesters

the greater faith missionary church is at the edge of the protests. reverend lawson spoke directly to the protesters. >> i know you're upset. but let's find a way to make a positive difference. >> reporter: a sentiment shared by many oakland residents. in oakland i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. and the chp says it recovered multiple firearms after it shut down a large side show near the port of oakland last night. the chp says as many as 200 people were involved in this side show around midnight. officers say they closed off each end of middle harbor road. officers say they detained those inside the perimeter and tried to identify them and determine if they had broken

on this thanksgiving day when ferguson missouri bakery owner says she's thankful for those who helped her shop after it was vandalized in the protest. fund raising sites raised $150,000 and today against all odds she was able to deliver her thanksgiving orders. she is one of the many residents of city touch by kindness that arose out of

violence. >> reporter: protests dying down in ferguson ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. two days after a grand jury decided not to indict officer darren wilson for the shooting of unarmed teenager michael brown. the next step for residents is cleaning up the damage by the day's long chaos. business owners returning to cover up their store fronts and protect whatever they have left from looters but some people say ferguson is more than what's seen on the news. >> this is my ferguson. the stuff that happens at night and the thing that people are watching on the national news. that's just such a small bit of what's happening here. there's so much donation and charity going on. >> reporter: despite the destruction, community members say they're sticking together. >> there's been a lot of people out here really centered on love and peace and community. i know we're all out here yesterday cleaning, everybody

has come together. >> reporter: meanwhile outrage over the grand jury's decision is spreading nationwide. troops remained station in and around the city. in ferguson missouri, dominique dometali. supreme court justice, ruth bader ginsburg is recovering at home. ginsburg had a stent inserted into her artery. ginsburg should be at work on monday. six people were arrested today for trying to disrupt the macy's thanksgiving parade in new york city. the group was protesting the

grand jury decision in ferguson, missouri. parade organizers say the demonstrator didn't have any effect on the parade going on about a block away. hundreds of thousands of people turned out to enjoy the 88th edition of the parade despite temperatures in the 30s. at san francisco's glide memorial church, parishioners like to say the spirit is everywhere. and today that love mixed nicely with the scent of a nice turkey dinner. alex sadvige was at glide as many gave back. >> reporter: a tradition at glide's in san francisco. for a warm meal served up with a great smile. >> look at what life is doing for everybody out there. now there's a lot of people out there that need help. >> reporter: glide dished out turkey and sides for needy people. and that turkey was served up

by these volunteers. they spent all day carving that turkey. >> someone is always less fortunate than the next one. i just feel like by coming here and helping i know someone out there will at least be appreciative of it. >> reporter: also at the carving table this morning, mayor ed lee, proud to see san francisco's generous spirit shine through on thanksgiving. >> this city is all about people connecting up with each other. if we can find ways in which our compassion for each other is demonstrated over and over again. >> reporter: it was also a busy morning across town at the salvation army where a team of volunteers were up early making thanksgiving meals to go. and they even let me hop into the assembly line. >> we're getting some more turkey in here. >> reporter: the salvation army is delivering 3,500 of these sealed meals to people who can't leave their homes either because of age or illness.

>> it's amazing how many people in our area don't have food and the fact that all this food and so many volunteers are here, that was amazing. >> a rewarding day of service. >> reporter: preparing meals that make a huge difference for so many. >> this is a special thanksgiving for st. anthony's foundation in san francisco. it served turkey dinner in its new multi million dollars facility to about 4,000 guests today. for more 50 years, st. anthony's diner room operated out of an old cramped building. last month a new, larger and better equipped diner room opened. the executive director says he has already seen a difference. >> before people would be eating their food with their head down looking at the tray. today they could be looking up

holiday pet adoption the shelter is offering an adoption for shelter animals. the cost is just $12 through the end of the year. >> they also provide preand postadoption counseling to help ease the transition into the new home and make it a smooth transition for everybody. >> officials at the shelter say the holidays are a popular time to adopt a pet. many peel have time off of work and are able to spend time with a newly adopted pet which they say is ideal for welcoming one to a new home. they play for the love of the game and they're also one out. plus emergency vehicles used to respond to another kind of emergency on this holiday. and they were bringing lots of smiles.

lanes at about 2:00 this morning. the man who died is identified at 44-year-old juan zamora. the individual arrested for dui in that same crash was not named. nearly three hours later, two cars collided also in the northbound lanes and at least one person suffered minor injuries. a series of earthquakes shook up parts of napa. one measured 2.1, the other 2.5. two miles south of yontville and 6 miles northwest of napa. there have been no reports though of any damage or injuries from those quakes. this snowstorm has passed on the east coast but the traffic delays are still being felt. the next good thing is people were traveling yesterday to get to the destination by today. some flights were delayed or cancelled. but many travelers took it in
