it is partly cloudiy this morning opinion we have quite a bit of fog out there. visibility is down to a quarter mile. temperatures for this afternoon on the cool side. upper 50s to low 60s. this rain will move into the bay area and bring us wet weather for not only saturday but sunday as well. once i fix this computer,ly come back and give you your current conditions. i will show you what to expect for the afternoon and tracking this rain coming up. good morning, sal. rosemary good morning. right now traffic is doing very well. it's not really a commute day for most people but people are on the road early. you can see the bay bridge there are cars there. i bet you am good percentage of these people are going to the mall. you might have to worry about visibility. it's pretty foggy in some areas. this is a look at 880. that commute looks pretty good. if you are driving in the south bay, the freeways are looking

you want to burn off that thanksgiving turkey, there are plenty of deals. everyone is in a great mood. the deals still approve to be strong this year. even though stores are opening earlier than in years past. thousands packed into great mall as it opened up at 6:00 last night. many stores any further closed rolling black thursday into black friday. we're seeing lots of sleepy people with loads of shopping bags to show for their over night efforts. one man said it was easier to fit in a massage chair to guard his wifes bags. while she shops around. >> i'm happy and she's happy too. >> reporter: the marketing director called this the calm before the storm. really the second storm she says when people return to shop today after getting in sleep following the black friday shopping sprees.

while the mall is packed, home depot is also hopping. i still have to go in and price mike's leaf blowers but we will get to that. in our next live report we talked to some of the people that are working this black friday. pulling double shifts. we'll have more on why they say it's actually fun for them. mike and claudine. >> look for that leaf blower and something for my wife. after i listened to that one interview. >> reporter: there are jewelry sales. >> oh i forgot to tell you rosemary said lights that run on batteries. are you writing it down? >> reporter: it's all up here. we've got it for you. the city of oakland is putting its own twist on black friday. libby schaaf will kick off plaid friday by visiting stores in the old oakland historic district. this is video from last years event which encourages them to

shop local. celebrating independently owned stores. but some stores in oakland hit hard by the vandalism could stay closed today. it will be a tough blow for merchants on their busiest and most profitable days of the year. ferguson protestors crashed public buildings. >> it outrages me because as a citizen of oakland, we are way more progressive. >> churches are reaching out to protestors. reverend tells demonstrators

that -- oakland hopes free park willing encourage people to shop downtown. downtown businesses could use the boost this year. especially in the wake of the recent vandalism. in order to keep the flow of shoppers ready. time limits will be -- police say they have shot and killed a man suspected of firing on several buildings including police headquarters. gunfire also targeted the federal courthouse and the mexican consulate and closed interstate 35 which runs through downtown austin. a robot is now examing one device that was found near police headquarters. a backpack containing

$100,000 was left at a burger king. according to the san jose mercury news the owner called police after finding that backpack on wednesday. when officers got there, they say they found $100,000 in cash inside along with marijuana, a list of phone numbers, and a bank withdrawal slip. just a few days fire season will officially end in three north bay counties. they have announced there is no longer a big threat of fire. the fire season will officially end on monday. more rain is expected to ball in the north bay in the coming days as rosemary has mentioned. it will continue to monitor conditions. cal fire is gearing up for next years season. cal fire is taking applications through the end of january for men and women who think they

have what it takes to be a seasonal firefighter. you must be at least 18 years old and in good physical health. firefighters must be able to carry 75 extra pounds through tough terrain. special thanksgiving home coming a few hours from now. crew might bees on the coast guard -- crew members on the coast guard cutter have been on a 140 day deployment. they seized 6-point six o'clock tons of ill -- 6.6 tons of illegal drugs. they are expected to arrive at 8:30 this morning. it's 6:08 this morning. it has been a big debate across the nation. should employees have to work on thanksgiving. coming up at 6:30 there is a new push by state lawmakers.

his is all from a florida police department using the pint size flairs that cut crime and followed a season car break in. those are big problems in florida and everywhere really. people leave those valuables in plain sight in their cars and police are trying to get you not to do that. to get the word out, members came up with the idea of using kids in their police safety video. >> a lot of times we put things out that a lot of people don't listen to what we are saying. good thing to do it is let's have kids talk to it. >> the police department also uses the same approach with the video created by kids by halloween. the videos have been a big hit on social media. bart is also trying to keep all the holiday shoppers safe

this season. the transit agently will provide police escorts or security experts at several of its stations this holiday season. shoppers who pay at the bay fair station can request an escort and the escorts will be added to other stations next month. this year bart has also added a new free bart watch app that allows customers to report crimes. bart is also adding longer trains to accommodate the holiday shopping crowd. >> and while many are shopping at those big box stores, tomorrow you can give back to the local stores. tomorrow is small business saturday. it was created by american express back in 2010 to help get shoppers spend their money locally. many are offering up deals and items you can't find anywhere else. organizers in pleasanton say the event is very important for their stores. >> shopping small all the time is very important. for every $100 spent in your local independent businesses, $68 is reinvested into the

local hunt. for jobs and higher incomes for those employees. >> according to american express, people spend about $5.7 billion during small business saturday last year. time is 6:13. want to head out to sal castaneda. i know we have done black fridays in the past where we have seen droves of people swarming to get to places. not really so much. >> i think when they started doing it yesterday, it took some of the steam out today. we do see some people out there. let's take a look at 280 northbound. lots of times after you know, you don't see anyone on holidays like this, it's a holiday for some. but there are people already out there doing their christmas shopping no doubt. some of them. this is a look at the entire south bay. in the a lot of red there. i don't see very much red at all on 101 and 85.

story we reported on the morning news yesterday. the chp plans to hold a news conference to discuss its crack down on a large side show. officers say they boxed in hundreds of vehicles at the event. several of which were involved in reckless and dangerous side show stunts. the chp says we should get more details on exactly how many people were arrested, cited, and how many vehicles were impounded. he had the proud distinction of being the oldest on the job and now after 45 years a bay area national park ranger is enjoying retirement. noel walker spent a day with rangers fan eddy. >> reporter: at an hour when the distant fog horns, the sound track of sweet dreams. it is sam eddy's alarm clock. the national park ranger is at

two young boys recovering after spending six hours trapped in a snow bank in new york state. police say the two cousins were playing outside wednesday night in newburg when a snowplow operator failed to see them and pushed a wall of snow right on top of them. police searched for the boys for six hours before someone finally heard their cries for help. police say the boys were gasping for air when they were found but they were not seriously hurt. airports getting ready for a busy weekend. we put a call into san

let's hit rosemary first. >> rosemary and i were talking shopping. >> i wish i could be there right now. if you are going to be shopping this weekend, you are going to need your umbrella. i will get to that in a moment. let's take a look at the clouds and the fog. the fog a little thick in some areas. mike said driving in areas along the east bay and the richmond, san rafael bridge he caught up with some fog. visibility down to a quarter mile. it's really thick through the delta as well. so much so the sacramento national weather service has issued a dense fog advisory if you do have an early morning drive, be prepared for that. this is going to slide through the bay area. but not for today. at least not for most of us. by the evening hours over the north bay you will have scattered showers in the

>> we had all of our stores open. many decided to remain open all night long. we had all the doors open and over 50 stores that said they were going to stay open throughout the night. >> before you buy make sure you check your local store for restrictions. limited supplies. cut off times and comparison shopping. there was woman that said have you been able to find some good deals? some of the items are on sale, some of the items aren't so it's a little tricky there. it's better when the whole store is half off because we know we are good. she's already spent about $150 but she doesn't think she will be here much longer. it's definitely getting more crowded as the morning goes on and a lot more folks waking up. live until concord i'm tara

who want more hours. state lawmaker is taking on black friday by introducing a bill that will require workers to get double play on thanksgiving and christmas. >> we have more and more workers in the state being forced out of their homes on thanksgiving to go in and work. >> walmart is responding to the proposed bill. many employees choose to work holidays to pick up extra hours. >> oakland walmart will be the site of a demonstration today. campaign organizers want to

boycott black friday. they are encouraging consumers to turn to economic activism and not spend money on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. a chp motorcycle officer suffered major injuries after getting hit by a car suspected of running red light in sunnyvale. they were going from highway 101 to lawrence expressway. highway patrol says the driver was traveling northbound on the expressway when a driver ran a red light and struck the motorcycle officer. the officer was transported to the hospital with major but nonlife threatening injuries. >> it is always tragic when there is collisions. it's more tragic when one of us

into those outlets. the stores will stay open until 10:00 tonight. police are warning drivers for those that expect heavy delays on 580 really through the weekend. shoppers could have a harder time finding a parking spot this year because of construction in the area. police are also warning shoppers to not leave valuables in those parked vehicles and to keep shopping bags out of site or just keep them in the trunk. the holiday shopping rush is also under way in milpitas. shoppers are seeing and i know you've had a lot of requests from studio a. are you picking anything up for us? >> reporter: we did. i want to show you claudine's ornaments. she requested christmas ornament and i found this lovely purple glitter ornament the. and mike i don't think you can be trusted with a leaf blower so i picked you up this. >> i've got two rakes but i could use another one. >> reporter: it's good exercise.

we are not hurting the environment with a gas powered leaf blower. we are all manpowerred. i caught up with interesting characters. let me show you video from inside the parking lot. these guys made a haul this morning. we talked to a couple international students from germany. what we are seeing here is instead of catching people going into the mall, we see a lot more people wrapping up their shopping because the mall opened up at 6:00 p.m.. the international students like i said they're from germany. they got a taste of this american tradition called black friday. let's just say they indulged. >> you're lying on the ground with a bunch of stuff behind you. what is up with that? >> we are trying to figure out how much we bought. >> reporter: we are seeing a lot of people really with just bags upon bags. not everyone bothered with the thanksgiving meal before

shopping. i'm told many people went to the 49ers game last night and after the loss unfortunately they came here for retail therapy and holiday deals. we saw big lines last night. it's been kind of quiet this morning. people are coming back for round two of shopping. there are still many black friday deals even though the stores opened a day early. rosemary i did not forget about you. i will go back and try to look for the battery operated lights. and i also i haven't heard from sal yet. >> he already weighed in. he wants power tools. >> power tools. >> he didn't get specific. he just get me power tools. >> a chain saw. >> that's who i want to have a chain saw. easier as the sun comes up. but you can tell it's foggy out there. let's take a look at interstate 880 north and southbound. traffic is doing well. we have been looking at the airport delays. we don't see any major delays right now. the delays will start appearing over the weekend as people struggle to get back. and if you are driving on 580 which is one of the busiest commutes, this morning it's just not that way. traffic is looking good on 580. you have 49 let's go to rosemary. good morning to you. we have gray skies out there. if you plan on stepping out, fog can be an issue. we are going to have partly cloudy skies for the afternoon today. at least over the central and south bay. if you are over the north bay if you are along the coastline, i think you will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy for today. and i've given you a look at

the satellite view. taking a wide shot so we can talk about what is happening over there. ridge of high pressure locked in over the bay area. it's beginning to be pushed aside. it's breaking down. and on the backside of it. i think by sunset the possibility will be increasing. for most of us it will be a dry day. i will show you the rainfall forecast. it also helps to time it out for us. 5:00 this afternoon notice a few sprinkles now developing over the north edge of sonoma county as we get into 5:00. areas of i-80 through the delta we've got it now into san francisco south of the golden

gate bridge. notice most of the central bay going to be dry. mainly dry for today. but tomorrow morning we wake up and now it has filled in. we have scattered showers in the forecast for saturday as well as sunday. we will get a bit of a break on monday. more rain on tuesday. all good news. as far as rainfall totals into sunday night. anywhere from half an inch to an inch for the central and south bay. over north bay 1-2 inches and sol of our coastal hills and our north bay hills could pick up about 2.5 inches. so again some good news coming our way and snow for the sierra. up to apholate of snow. giving you a look at your temperatures this morning, if you are getting outdoors. it's a chilly one in napa. 48 in redwood city and 39 in livermore. walnut creek cold there as well. as we get into the afternoon, upper 50s to low 60s. generally a cool day. could feel a little mild for
