the shooting death of the unarmed black teen, michael brown. snake, protesters are using this busy black friday to make a message heard. we have live coverage tonight. johnson is here with the demonstration this morning that shut down the service. we begin with paul, who is live at the union square. a new protest has taken shape. they are about to light the christmas tree. >> that is correct. within the hour, we will have protesters here. there are hundreds out here waiting for the kickoff to the holiday season, reading for the tree lighting there are people on the other side, a small group here with the purpose. >> black lives matter! like lives matter! >> reporter: there are 30 people out. they are not here to cause problems and as of now, it has been peaceful. but they say the word needs to be out. the demonstration needs to go on. they are very upset with what happened in ferguson. they continue to have the battle. they want people to know that people of color matter in these

situations. they are upset with the outcome of the situation. they will stay out here and do this all the time. i asked them why doing it the - - why do it during the saturn ceremony? >> we have to stand up now. >> it affects other people. they can say what they want. they can say what they feel about the protest. >> reporter: let me clarify, this has been a very peaceful protest. or have been no issues whatsoever, as of right now, and i will be coming back out live. there are hundreds of people out here. the majority are waiting for the tree lighting ceremony which could happen at any time. it was supposed to be at 6:40. they moved it up earlier just in case. once again, with protesters on the other side, there been no protests issues. there are still some people, and i can see signs out in the distance.

as of right now, there have been no issues. we will stay on top of this and be here for the latest. >> we will hope everything stays peaceful. as you said, so far it has been. >> earlier today, dozens of protesters shut down service at the busy west oakland station. their up on both sides of the bay causing major delays. john was there, as protesters were arrested. john? >> they did not damage anything. they were not vandals. but a couple of dozen protesters caused problems for dozens of people trying to get in or out of sentences go. >> count the truth and count the lies. michael brown did not have to die. >> it took 10 people to bring the service to stand still. on the east and westbound platforms at the station, five people linked together to stop trains on both sides from going anywhere. >> we are doing a protest on

black friday to interrupt commerce and send a strong message. like lives matter. >> a man chained himself to a handle inside of a train. he went on with the other testers. the last person in line was changed to a ranch. >> we chained ourselves, because it is symbolic of how we feel. we are chained. we feel trapped. >> eventually, police brought in firefighters to disconnect the bar and lead protesters. >> marginalized people are being murdered indiscriminately by the police. it makes us feel targeted when the majority of people that police have killed are black and brown. >> that man told us why he did it. >> i did not wants to take action, but i felt someone needed to tell the police that it is not okay to kill people as if they are less than human. >> officers started to saw the

chains that they linked together. but the protesters let go and surrenders as soon as they saw the tool. >> we had a spokesperson on both prop forms. we were able to come to peaceful conclusions. this disruption was a huge headache for thousands of people getting to and from sentences go. >> we are not in ferguson. shutting down the platform station, no relationship with that and police brutality. nothing at all. >> release arrested 14 people they are charged with interfering with two misdemeanors. >> and they were out for more than an hour. two the protesters plan to stay out longer? >> they plans to be out for 4.5 hours. that is how long they wanted to shut down the station because they said that is how long michael brown's body was in the street after he was killed. but of course, that was not

going to happen according to police. >> dozens of people marched outside and picketed outside walmart in oakland. news chopper to is overhead. the demonstration was part of blackout friday, part of the reaction to the decision in ferguson. there is no word of the disruption caused by demonstration. >> and the restrictions help in and around ferguson. the police record escorted people out of the parking lot. the national guard was brought in for a small illustration. some shoppers did not see the point of the arrests. >> they are not bringing any justice to them. it's this situation anyway, we have to come up with better ideas. >> one of the larger protests was that target in st. louis. demonstrators called on shoppers not to spend money in

emery if michael brown. on ktvu .com, you will find more on today's protests, updates on twitter and facebook. >> and now to weather. some folks stocked up on sandbags for the approaching rain. the storm system headed towards the california could dump several inches of rain. sandbags are welcome - - available at the sheriff department. standards are available at park and bay point, the west county jail, and the oakley senior center. and the meteorologist is with us now. he is tracking the latest conditions for us on the weather center. how is it looking? >> rainfall is moving already into the parts of the north bay. and its picking up covers right on time according to the forecast. the rich are is grandly- -gradually spinning self. this is the first of many events over the week. we have a lot to talk about, multiple systems.

the first is an ordinary cold front. but on the left portion of your screen, you will see a lot more activity, and significant rain for four week. here is the live storm tracker. some rainfall, the most recent observation is up towards 6:00. here is the focus of the rainfall. santa rosa, cloverdale, and a shift to the south as well. you can see right on the border of petaluma nevada is seeing some clouds and activities expected over the next few hours. we are looking at current numbers in the 50s right now. and increasing rainfall on the order of 225 inches for the period, possibly more over the coming days. we will have more on that. the timing of this rain is coming over the weekend. they will be picking up snow over the sierras as well. more coming up in 10 minutes. >> and the rest of our urologists are posting weather

update online. you can follow them anytime on twitter and facebook. >> today marks the start of ktvu view - - ktvu warm coat drive. we have crews all over the bay area to collect gently used coats. our reporter bill martin is joining us live at the creek. how are you guys doing? it does not seem like you need a coat today. the temperatures are in the 70s. you will for the next couple of days. we are at the ice rink. channel two has been doing this for about 14 years. ring your coat down. you can bring it down even after tonight, until the end of december. a nice coat, nothing worn out. over 2000 coats have been dropped off today. they are all pretty nice. i talked to the girl scouts, they have been hoping all day. it is nice stuff, it's a nice way to start the holidays and contribute to the committee. you can bring one down anytime you want.

this is a great group of people. people are dropping off jackets before they go skating. others are dropping them off throughout the bay area. everybody got one. there was one in san francisco as well. one warm coat, a great organization. 49 other states are doing this. actually 48, we make it 49 in the bay area. it is a great cause. i remember the first time i did this. it was probably 13 years ago. we have been doing it for up while. you get a chance to get out here, bring a coat. >> thank you so much. it is all for a good cause. thank you so much. >> and dave foundation in san francisco says volunteer help is great, but the need is here all year. some 3000 dinners were served yesterday, and about the same number today. anthony says a lot of volunteers came out. they will welcome them again as well as anyone else who wants to help at any time. >> we have a hard time

a crash injures injured a motorcycle officer. it's considered an accident. investigators say around 9:30, a driver hit the officer after running a red light. the driver was not found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. but he was cited for running the red light. the officer was taken to the hospital with major, but non- life-threatening injuries. and a detective was accused up improper texting. he text a picture to his supervisor of a scantily clad be male. female. there was no legitimate reason for the texting. a burglary suspect later reported the texting. the officer was held accountable for what was called bad judgment. >> and more arrests for the massive sideshow. pictures of the legal

gathering, where more than 200 people watched a hundred cars spend donuts and do tricks. more than 100 people were detained. more arrests are expected. >> we are going to use investigative skills from the aircraft video to determine charges. we want to make sure appropriate people are charged with the appropriate crimes. still many of those who face charges are from the bay area. it is not clear when they will be arrested. in san francisco, police have arrested a man accused of attacking a taxi driver. this happened before 2:00 a.m. on sunday. the driver was dropping off a meal passenger near 18th avenue. the driver reportedly was attacked. he is being treated at a hospital for facial injuries. and suspect is being detained for the assault.

and the black friday frenzy. it was packed as shoppers looked to take advantage of the deals. many retailers are offering deals up to 70% off and 50% off. many shoppers were fighting the crowds. they say it is worth it. >> it was a little more tame. some say the crowds were not as big as in past years. but that may be because many people opted to shop online. >> in the south bay, shoppers are going strong. now at the mall, we will find some shoppers who started around dinnertime yesterday. >> the mall was open over night and all day. it is still crowded. parking lots and stores are full. like friday bargains are in effect for a few more hours. as advertised, black friday brought deals. it also brought crowds and

chaos. >> is a great shopping day. everything is on sale, 50% off. >> at the mall, shopping started early. like friday actually began on thursday at 6:00 p.m. the earlier start than last year, the malls are starting to see more business than last year. >> i'm not sure if it was going to spread out the sales and traffic over a longer period of time. we are seeing both. >> about half of the stores stayed open all night. >> it is special. we still have thanksgiving. okay, christmas, instead of it has artie been christmas and it is october. >> this is a shopping marathon. >> i'm doing okay right now. weekend, keep umbrellas handy. it's the first in a series of storms moving through the bay area. right now, the rainfall is being tracked northbound towards eureka. the activity has been sliding into part of sonoma county. at 5:00, there was light to moderate rain. right now you can see a closer look at santa rosa and winter park. there are moderate downpours in the region. moving south, you can see on the outskirts of petaluma, scattered rain showers that we'll drift to the south of the next few hours. san francisco and oakland right now have some clouds. i suspect by 8:29 tonight, it will be a different story. here is a live camera. mostly cloudy skies for tonight. rainfall will be developing. we are tracking off and on rain. first thing tomorrow morning, more storms tomorrow. you can see multiple rain clouds

showing up on the forecast. rain expectations right on through wednesday. we are expecting amounts to look for inches. it could be for -7 inches. and multiple systems are lighting up right now. that will be for next week. rainfall is developing overnight. you can have some heavy rain first thing saturday morning south of the bridge. and another friend is developing on sunday. the first round for tomorrow, and rain and gusty wind. more systems are lighting up on tuesday. we are approaching the coastline and areas of low pressure. here's the forecast for tomorrow morning. it could be heavier times for the southern southern bay area. activity begins to back off during the southern hours. it increases into sunday morning. we are talking about more rainfall moving into the
