no peace. no justice. thousands gathered for an annual tradition in union square interrupted by dozens damaging property along the way. good evening i'm cristina rendon in tonight for julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. for the first time we're seeing some real damage that is outside of oakland. tonight protesters took their anger out on san francisco. ken pritchett is there. ken is all of this still going on? >> frank, as we understand it, there are some elements that police may be following in parts of the city but by in

large part this march has dissipated. we're at the foot of market around 6:00. businesses on this black friday were disrupted as well as a holiday tradition at union square. and that was the point. this destruction, the smashing of window, damaging property was the act of a few. among hundreds who gathered at the embarcadero to mark over the decision of the grand jury. >> the murder of all these children, all these kids, i'm here because i'm angered. >> reporter: the march stopped traffic, workers, shoppers, tourists. a peaceful march that turned after it left market and arrived at union square. police were pelted with bottles, this as hundreds of people gathered beyond the

police line to watch the christmas tree lightning. the protesters gathered around the block to powell. even as they chanted this was a peaceful protest they broke the sound with breaking glass. and more bottles were thrown at officers, minutes later, the crowd left and some within its smashed windows and other property along the way. it appears many shoppers remained sheltered inside businesses. at the mall the doors were locked with security on guard to protect customers inside from the protesters who had moved back on fifth where there was another stand off with police. >> reporter: after fifth and market, the group that was 300 or so split up. some went to the mission district where san francisco police tell us at 23rd and

hamilton there were more incidents of broken windows, a police car was vandalized and we're told a police officer was hit in the head with a brick. that officer taken to the hospital just as a precaution. he's expected to be okay. >> reporter: ken pritchett in san francisco tonight. thank you ken. all of this follows three nights of angry protests in oakland. protesters as you probably recall shut down freeways and damaged and looted stores. 170 people in all were arrested during those three nights of demonstrations on monday, tuesday and wednesday. >> a protest of a different kind in oakland today. 10 people chained themselves to each other and to two b.a.r.t. trains at the west oakland station stopping service between san francisco and oakland for 90 minutes. john sasaki was inside that station as the protest unfolded and protesters were arrested. >> tell the truth and stop the lies, mike brown didn't have to die. it took just 10 people to bring b.a.r.t.'s transbay service to a standstill.

on the eastbound and westbound platforms five people linked themselves together to stop trains on both sides from going any where. >> we're doing a protest on black friday to interact commerce and send a very strong message that black lives matter. >> reporter: one man stood in front of a train and linked with other protesters. >> the reason we chained ourselves it's symbolic. where they're physical or not we have mental chains in which we feel trapped. >> reporter: eventually police brought firefighters who helped disconnect the train to which the lead protester was tied. >> it does feel pretty targeted when the majority of people that the police kill are black and brown. >> i'm feeling good. >> reporter: as he was being led away, that man told us why

he did it. >> i didn't want to take this action but i felt someone needed to tell these cops that it's not okay to kill black lives as if they are less than human. >> reporter: to separate the other protesters, officers started to saw apart the tubes they linked to link themselves together. as soon as they saw that tool the protesters let go and surrendered. >> it was a peaceful demonstration they did have a spokesperson on both platforms. we liaisons with that spokesperson, we were able to come to a peaceful conclusion. >> reporter: this disruption was a huge headache for thousands of people gets to and from san francisco. >> we're not in ferguson. what's shutting down a b.a.r.t. station. what emphasis does that have to police brutality? nothing. >> reporter: police arrested 14 people. they're all facing charges of interfering with rail way.

misdemeanors. even with back up service, hundreds had to wait for an hour or more. passengers who talked to us said they sympathized with the protesters but felt that shutting down b.a.r.t. was not the right way. >> i understand that they're trying to stop it from going to san francisco and black friday and the whole cause but i just want to get home. >> i don't think this is a way you can go about it another rout. like you're putting all these people at a disadvantage. find some other way. >> reporter: train service from san francisco to oakland resumed about 1:30 this afternoon. b.a.r.t. says the shut down caused lingering delays. they marched and chanted outside the mall then went

inside. some staged die-ins and asked shoppers not to spend their money today. their action briefly led some of the stores to close. while some shoppers joined in others weren't convinced that the action will have any effect. >> this shopping on black friday is not going to bring any justice to the whole situation any way. so i think we have to come up with some better ideas. >> a similar scene played out in other cities including new york. protesters converged on macy's flag ship store. there was a heavy police presence and in the end no one was arrested. it is raining right now in the bay area. we just received this video of rain in san rafael. it's also raining in oakland. we're expecting a good soaking throughout the weekend and days of rain just beginning tonight. some light rain already falling in the north bay. >> let's bring in mark tamayo tracking this band of rain. how much do you think we're going to get here. >> we could be measuring rainfall in the inches.

this could be one of several rainfall events. you see the numbers as i mention this is just the very beginning and most of the rainfall toward the bay bridge. this is basically ordinary for this time of year with the cold front moving across the bay area. here you can't pick out the scattered rain showers out there. as we zoom into parts of the north bay. kind of beginning to fall apart. earlier this evening we had more organized rainfall but still scattered rainfall throughout solano. we are expecting more enhancement overnight. 5:00 tomorrow morning, mainly focused in the southern half of the region. then you will note throughout the day. it's not a wash out. it's not persistent rainfall all day long.

as i mentioned this is just the very beginning of what will be a very wet weather episode over the next few days. more rain clouds to talk about. we'll do just that in just about 10 minutes. some parts of the bay area are preparing for all that rain on the way by offering sandbags. we found one woman picking up sandbags at oakland's city corporation yard at oak port today. she says she wants to keep all the rainwater away from her foundation. and the sandbags will probably work better than the potting soil that she's been using. >> i live on a inclined lot, so the water picks up a lot of steam as it runs down my driveway and sidewalk. >> reporter: contra costa county is also providing sandbags and sand. if you want to find a list of locations check out web links on our website ktvu.com. well black friday was relatively calm at malls across the bay area today. in concord a steady stream of shoppers were out taking advantage of deals. but the crowds seemed smaller

than yeared past. that's because more people are deciding to do all their shopping online. and in south bay, shoppers started black friday yesterday on thanksgiving and doors there just closed minutes ago. ktvu's ann rubin shows us the shopping and the set up for those who needed to recharge. >> we made our own parking space because we couldn't find parking. >> reporter: this is black friday. for the third year straight it started thursday here. in fact, valley fair opened at 6:00 p.m. on thanksgiving the earliest they ever have. >> we had an enthusiastic response from our shoppers opening early. so we showed the 49ers game, the terrace people started arriving at 4:30, 5:45, we've been going since then. >> reporter: about 60% of stores stayed open all night. >> lots of coffee. i think we're doing okay right

now. >> for shoppers too, this is hard work. >> i'm tired. >> reporter: the mall has a special room for resting and people called merry makers handing out treats and smiles to keep you going. >> can you name all of santa's reindeer. >> reporter: these shoppers say black friday is still a good effort. >> if you have a good item for the price, i don't mind even though it's tiring. >> reporter: an increase in traffic in sales already has been seen. >> everybody else is saying black friday is crazy. but to me i think everything was pretty cool. >> reporter: the store. >> jim: remain open until 10:00 p.m. at the valley fair mall. ann rubin, ktvu news. in livermore a lot of people also took advantage of black friday deals. the livermore premium outlets

were crowded with people looking for a bargain today. many of those businesses were offering deals like 70% off items or 60% off stores. fighting the crowds is worth it if you can get that good deal said shoppers we talked to. and local shopping is designed to encourage people to skip all the big box stores and shop at local independent stores instead. oakland mayor elect libby schaff says it is important. >> a large part of that money gets reinvested to fill in the potholes and get the much needed police in your street. support libraries and parks and rec programs all the things we care about. >> reporter: it was particularly important to shop in oakland to help offset the

a marin county woman is wanted in a domestic county case after police say she plunged a knife into her boy friend's head. the man survived and has been able to talk to detectives. debora villalon has the story. >> reporter: cristina it happened in this building on mission avenue and where police returned tonight for more investigation. people on this block heard screams wednesday morning and found a horrific sight. >> he was running down the street and he had this knife stuck in the top of his head. >> reporter: domestic calls aren't often like this. >> when you see somebody running down the middle of the street with a knife sticking out of their head, that makes this case pretty unusual. very violent. >> reporter: the 40-year-old

man who burst out of this apartment around 2:30 a.m. was running on panic and shock. police say during an argument his girlfriend stabbed him with a 12-inch knife. >> like if i took a knife and stuck it in here and held on to it, it would just be solid in this desk right now that's how it was in his head. >> reporter: people who heard his crews came out to help the man and called paramedics. the suspect 47-year-old glenda bernardini drove off. her car was found the next day, abandoned several miles away. taking no chances, investigators returned to the apartment friday night. no one inside. they will collect evidence, take photos and recreate the crime scene with bernardini still on the run. >> it does not surprise me that she did that. >> reporter: this neighbor say it is couples fights have spilled into the street before. >> they've had like a few

domestic issues and i've gotten into the middle of the arguments. like arguments and i've seen him chase him down. >> reporter: the knife was removed from his skull in the hospital. police were able to hold an interview friday. he's in serious condition with his future unknown. people in the neighborhood were asked not to approach bernardini, but to contact police. police say until they find her, they won't have the full picture. >> there's two sides of each story. so we need to get her side of the story. >> reporter: glenda bernardini also goes by the last name fleming. she's from marin and police believe she is probably still in the area. they are encouraging her to turn herself in. the likely charges would be

assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. >> all right, thank you so much debora. police in austin texas say they're still trying to figure out the motive for that gunman that fired more than 100 shots at buildings in the down downtown area last night. he hit the federal courthouse, the mexican consulate and the police department. the man is identified as larry mcwilliams. he died either by committing suicide or by an officer that was putting two horses away. >> as he held two horses with one hand he discharged one round at least one round with a single handed shot. and so, that would be one heck of a shot. >> reporter: the austin police chief said the suspect also tried to set the mexican consulate on fire but it was quickly put out. and they're looking into whether immigration policies may have been a motive here given the targets.

the threat of the ebola virus has come to the west. the 32-year-old man visited sierra leone one of the countries affected by the outbreak. early today he called 911 when his symptoms became severe. >> he was appropriately screened by customs and border and cdc and we were notified that he was going to return here before he actually did return here. so all of the public health processes in place worked. >> reporter: preliminary tests showed the man does not have the virus. doctors though will keep him under observation for 21 days. former baltimore ravens running back ray rice has won the appeal of his indefinite suspension from the nfl. rice was initially suspended for two games for knocking out his girlfriend with one punch inside an elevator. but then after a video tape surfaced that actually showed the hit, the nfl commissioner suspended rice indefinitely. rice appealed, arguing that he

was being punished twice and a judge agreed. rice has said he would like to play again but at this point it's not clear whether any team will offer him a contract. >> one of the players who we've always seen on that video hitting his then fiance coming back to play in the national football league this season, it's a difficult prospect to see that maybe happening. >> i hope he gets a second chance. we live in a country where you are truly supposed to get second chances. >> reporter: rice issued a statement thanking the judge and everyone who supported him. he said he made an inexcusable mistake and that he accepts full responsibility about that. the woman he hit is now his wife and is speaking to espn. she says she remembers nothing about that incident because they had been drinking heavily. she says he cried and apologized afterward. since then both of them have also gone to couples counseling

and are working on their relationship. as we said they're now married and they have a daughter. skiers and borders in the sierra are enjoying their thanksgiving weekend. there's plenty of snow on the slopes. north star resorts says it opened a seventh list with access to popular high mountain trails including a beginners run. more snow is coming with a storm that begins tonight. a foot or more is expected to fall by sunday morning. this is just the beginning of a stormy weather pattern for northern california including the sierra. we have been tracking rain showers moving up from the north coast down to the north bay. right now you can see the latest on our live storm tracker 2. scattered rain showers out there. this activity beginning to back off. i'll step out of the way as it comes to the south of marin county. and scattered rain showers right around san rafael as well. out toward solano county not as much coverage for vallejo and fairfield.

still that line will gradually move to the south. and reports of wet roadways out toward san francisco and out toward oakland some light mist and showers. the rainfall rates will be increasing as we head into the overnight hours primarily south of the golden gate bridge. this weekend periods of rain. we're going to have lots of breaks out there. it's not persistent rainfall all week long. this has the potential to produce some more excessive rainfall rates at least some heavier downpours. this is the key headline no longer a dry weather pattern out there. we're tracking a storm series over the next few days. periods of rain this weekend. more rain next week. and the expected totals right on through wednesday one to 2- inches in most areas. but we may have areas that see 3-inches. this is 5:00 a.m. some breaks in the afternoon. scattered rain showers.

the spirit of giving was on display tonight in the east bay. a teenager from danville is trying to make a real difference by helping those in a desperate situation in a country half a world away that she's visited several times. amber lee talked to that teenager on why she's trying to raise tens of thousands of dollars for friends she's made in uganda, amber. >> reporter: frank, we're at the old oak tree here in danville. the town officially kicked off the holiday season tonight with a tree lighting ceremony and the teen says this is the perfect setting for her to gather support for her cause. the sounds of the holiday

season to accompany danville's tree lighting ceremony. >> three, two, one. >> to a crowd of 10,000. it provided the backdrop to kaira's fundraiser. the teen is selling handmade jewelry to women in uganda. >> every one of them is unique. none of them are the same. when they told us about their stories in the past it's absolutely heartbreaking. just having visited them and been with them so much that we're friends with all of the women. >> reporter: kaira made many trips to uganda as part of fund a field a nonprofit started by her two older brother, avid soccer fan, to help students in impoverished countries.

she became friends with the women who make the paper jewelry. she learned that 200 children and women are about to lose their home a refugee camp because the land has been sold for development. kaira started home for the holiday a project to raise money for these families so they can relocate and survive. she sells the jewelry at events and online. >> we have interacted so much with them that we could not not help them. >> reporter: the teen says these women have already suffered enough. she hopes the spirit of giving during the holidays will encourage people to help and what better way than to buy the paper bead jewelry the women hand crafted themselves. >> by making this they have a better life. their children have a better life. >> reporter: kiara has already raised $18,000 toward her goal of $43,000 by december 14th

trip that went to south america. those on board say they're glad to be home including the ship's captain. >> it's always good to do what we're supposed to do out there but it's always better coming to our family. >> the crews seized more than 600-pound of narcotics. a detective was disciplined for improper texting. the unknown officer text a picture of a cladly dressed woman being arrested. the chp says more arrests are likely for a large illegal side show that happened near the port of oakland on wednesday night. more than 20 people have already been sited and a number of cars have been inpounded.

it sounds and looks a lot like christmas in washington, d.c. a horse drawn wagon pulled up to the white house today to deliver the official christmas tree. the first lady, daughters malia and sasha and the family dogs came out to see the delivery. two young kids managed to survive for hours overnight buried under several feet of heavy wet snow. that was actually dumped on them accidentally by a snowplow. it all started last night in an

upper burrough of new york. the boys were playing in a snow fort and a snowplow came out and covered them. >> reporter: police say they were buried incredibly under about 5 feet of snow. the boys were safe when they were recovered. here at ktvu we are taking doe -- donations as part of our coat drive. our own bill martin was at the drop off spot taking in gently used coats. those coats will be used to keep people warm this winter. over 2,000 coats were donated today at that site. the driver ends through the end of the year. san francisco's ferry building,

live camera looking out toward the oakland, lots of clouds and drizzle. more storms a little more impressive as we head into next week for monday and tuesday. our forecast model shows us the amounts adding up. especially out toward san jose at .76. so first system moving in for tonight. we're talking about a series of storms over the next week or so. the next one that will be cueing up for next week. at least for tonight rainfall will be heading toward the south. bulk of the activity for tomorrow will be for the morning hours. lots of breaks into the afternoon. scattered rain showers. sundays periods of rain, tuesday, wednesday we could be tracking more rain. we're going to have more development here for the sunday system that cold front develops from the south and west. tomorrow morning the focus of
