coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> and we come to mornings on two. we are on storm watch for you. there is rosemary right there on the side of your screen. rosemary, how is it looking? >> actually seeing some pretty good snow all the way down in to the valley for the sierra. about six thousand feet or so. still a rain/snow mix around blue canyon. if you are going to travel in that direction that is something to be aware of. you will need snow tires and or chains. giving you a live look into -- and over the oakland esta, ry where we have mostly cloud country sky -- cloudy skies. steady rain. you can see in the south bay. san jose reporting moderate to heavy rain. we have from san jose into campbell. you can see over the diablo range moderate to heavy rain. we have moderate to heavy

much rain we expect coming up. >> all right. as rosemary said the rain is here and it's not going away for a while. that has some people in the bay area already stocking up on sandbags. we did meet up with one woman picking up sandbag hats is it the i -- the city corporation yard. she said she wants to keep water away from the foundation. she knows the sandbags work better than the potting soil she was using. >> i live on a -- in a inclined lot. the water picks up a lot of steam as it runs down my drive way and sidewalk. >> there are several places around the bay area where you can find free sandbags. if you want to look at the list of locations just go to the website and check out the web links tab. just go to ktvu.com. >> and a lot of snow is expected in the sierra this weekend. want to give you a live look from up there in the lake tahoe area where the snow started to fall over night.

the higher elevations could see up to a foot of snow from all of these storms and the snow won't let up until sunday night and also we will see more later in the week. winds are also expected to be an issue. caltrans is working overtime to make sure that the roads are clear for drivers. last night they got the snow vehicles chained up and it's a good thing. you can see there is some snow already there on the roadways. skiers and snow boarders taking advantage with several ski resort open for business. >> for being november it was enjoyable. of course coming from new jersey. we don't really get a lot of great powder. >> businesses say that the fresh powder is welcome news and they hope to have more of it this year since last year was so dry. we will have a live interview with squaw valley about the new snow and tech knowledge guilty -- technology they are offering. if you are planning to head up

all right. happening today shoppers across the country are taking part in small business saturday. it's a national campaign that encourages holiday shopping at local, independent retailers on this day after black friday. allie is live here in studio to tell us about the event. hey. >> reporter: hey. earlier this week we got a

chance to meet up with some of the owners of local shops that were taking part in small business saturday. we talked to them about how important this day is to them. >> we are at town center books in pleasanton on main street. you can see holiday shopping and christmas is very much on the mind of the people here. this is one of 30 businesses in pleasant on that have signed up for small business saturday. it's a national event organized by american express to get people to shop at local independent retailers the day after black friday. judi wheeler is the owner of town center books. how important is a day like this for you? >> we love this day. it gets everybody in the holiday spirit, start ises the season off right and it's probably one of the five biggest days of our year. >> reporter: what do you do differently to encourage people to come here in stead of going to the mall? >> we have four author that will be here talking about their favorite books as well as their own. as always we have really friendly service. we can do special orders.

we can look up books for people and recommend all sorts of things for anyone on their list . >> reporter: we talked to someone from the downtown pleasant association who said there have been study that have broken down the benefit of shopping local. >> for every hundred dollars spent in your local independent businesses $68 is rene vested in in -- put back into those communities. it's really important to shop local. >> reporter: now surveys from the national federation of independent businesses and american express which hosts this campaign found that in 2012 consumers taking part in small business saturday spent 5.5 billion at local shops and retailers. in 2013 it went to 5.7 billion. small retailers report that more people are becoming aware of the campaign though they say it's still an uphill battle trying to compete with the marketing discounts offered by national chain stores. back to you.

>> thank you. the city of oakland is hoping free parking today is going to get more people to shop downtown. every saturday through new year's drivers can park for free at four city owned lots. the oakland mayor said that the downtown businesses could use the boost, especially in the wake of vandalism. city officials say in order to keep the flow of shoppers steady time limits will still be enforced at the meters, the lots and garages. >> several businesses are cleaning up a from protesters smashing -- who smashed windows during black friday. the protest came days after grand jury decision not to charge ferguson police officer for the shooting death of michael brown. that protest started a peaceful march but demonstrators be got

december construct -- destructive. employees were inside when they started to attack the store with rocks. >> it was a scary situation. it happened really quickly. you know -- it was overwhelming. >> reporter: they say some of the protesters stole electronics from inside the store. one officer had cuts on his face during the protest after a demonstrator threw a bottle at a police car. that incident follows three nights of protests in oakland. protesters shut down freeways, looted and damaged stores, 170 people were arrested during the three nights. on monday, tuesday and wednesday. >> several protesters are facing charges for a demonstration that shut down a bart station. ten people chained themselves to each other and to the inreceived two bart strains at the -- bart trains. that protest stopped service for 90 minutes. eventually police brought in firefighters who helped disconnect the bar that one of the protesters was attached to.

>> we are being murdered or -- maybe on purpose by the police. it feels targeted when the majority of people killed by the police are black. >> reporter: they are facing charges of trespassing and interfering railway operations. that disruption was a huge headache for thousands of people who were trying to get to and from san francisco. even with back up bus service hundreds did have to wait an hour or more at the station. some passengers said they do have sympathy for the protesters but felt shutting down the station wasn't the best way. >> it's not a way you can go about it. you can go another route. like you are putting all of these people at disadvantage. find another way. >> we aren't in ferguson. what is shutting down a bart station -- what relationship does that have to police brutality? nothing. >> reporter: bart said that the shut down caused lingering delays throughout the system. >> five people in sacramento were arrested after a group of

protesters blocked traffic near a mall. at one point they blocked the entrance to the mall forcing security to lock up doors. the protest started peacefully but got disruptive after 30 people blocked traffic. >> a plan to keep an old bay bridge eastern span pie, er in place is being considered. according to the san francisco chronicle the plan would go against the first permit for the bridge project which does require that all of the piers be removed down to the bay floor. the cost to remove all of the foundations is expected to be more than $107 million. >> black friday has come and gone and it appears that malls across the bay area were relatively calm. this is the line of vehicles waiting to get into valley fair mall. the black friday deals actually kind of started thursday. this year valley fair opened at

six on thanksgiving, the earliest it has. about 50% of those stores stayed open overnight. shoppers say they couldn't be happier. >> like oh black friday is crazy but it was pretty cool. >> valley fair said it did it's best to accommodate everybody. people called merry makers were hired to hand out treats and smile to the crowd. the mall even created a special resting room for shoppers who needed to take a break. wal-mart has turned to children to come up with their top 20 toy list. they traveled to dallas to meet with hundreds of children ages 18 months to 12. the young toy experts were allowed to play with the hottest new toys from suppliers like hasbro, spin master and more. >> it's really fun. it's just -- heart warming to watch the kids play with the toys and to see what they

>> chutes and ladders in my household. >> which? >> chutes and ladders. >> candy land. >> candy land. >> i'm good at that. >> got some weather. >> and we are going to start with a look at the bay bridge. already on the move this morning. take a look. it's a soggy one out there and if you look into san francisco you will notice you can't see the skyline. it's foggy as well. not a lot of rainfalling from the sky. at least over san francisco. i do think we have a little bit of drizzle i few light scattered showers. we will start in the american canyon where we are seeing light scattered showers. you may have some light rain. that stretches in to areas like vallejo and fairfield. over parts of the central bay, oakland, san francisco, reporting just a little bit of drizzle, not a lot going on at the moment. san jose you have a healthy dose coming your way. actually its been pouring for the last hour.

that's some great news. over the santa cruz mountains i talked about it at the top of the hour. some of these areas reporting eight tenths of an inch of rain in the last 12 hours. let's head to the sierra with snow falling over the sierra as well. the snow level right now right about yuba pass. we have flurries falling over the tahoe valley area and a mix of rain and snow getting down to about blue canyon. if you are going that direction be prepared. we are expecting travel delays and it'll be dangerous at times a winter weather advisory lasting from now into tomorrow night. you are looking at from six to 12-inches of snow at the higher elevations and snow level dropping to 5500 feet at times. giving you a look at what we can expect at home. we are again mostly cloudy, quite a bit of rain fell over the north bay and the overnight. from a quarter inch much to eye half inch reported to areas like santa rosa, mount saint

helena had almost an inch. into the afternoon we will be mostly cloudy and notice pop up showers. not a complete wash out. if you are going to be out maybe thinking about going for a run you will be okay. it'll be soggy but not to bad. it's not going to end. there to tonight and tomorrow notice more on the way. here is tomorrow morning. scattered showers in the forecast and most of sunday will be soggy as well. all said and done we are looking at from one to three inches of rain and our hills, especially the coastal range could pick up to six inches of rain. when i say all said and done i'm talking about into early next week. ly show you that in the extended forecast. let's talk about the numbers. not to bad a lot of 50s. 57 san francisco. 55 haywood. relatively mild when it comes to the number. it's cloudy and it's cool and it's soggy and it's a little breezy. bring along the jacket if you are getting out. 60 degrees in the afternoon. 58 san rafael. 61 mountain view. the temperatures didn't change a lot. we are starting in the mid to

tall and is decorated with more than 33,000 energy efficient led lights a 12-year-old singer known as the little man with a strong voice from america's got talent season nine headlined. singers weren't the only people making noise a group of demonstrators were also there protesting the ferguson decision. they gathered about an hour and a half before the tree lighting started. police and security guards hired by the event organizers spread out around them. the group chanted black friday doesn't matter, black lives matter as shoppers passed by. now a holiday tradition will come to life this weekend in san francisco. today the fairmont will reveal it's gingerbread house for more than a century. it's expected to be about the same size as last year and will span 22 feet high and 23 feet wide. it includes thousands of home baked bricks with 15,000 poundses of icing and candy.

business shows about seven out of ten are aware of the concept of small business saturday. earlier this week we met with the owner of a local shop in pleasanton who talked object -- about how he is trying to stand out. these are actually fancy dog colors that you can find at a store called murphy's paw. it's on main street in pleasanton. they are gearing up for the holiday shopping season. you can tell by some of the christmas themed pet toys they have out on display. this is one of 30 businesses that have signed up for an event called shop small saturday. it's organized by american express and the goal is to get shoppers to go to the locally owned, independent retailers day after black friday to get some of their business and dee is the owner. what do you do in order to get people to come into your store? >> reporter: we do a lot of raffles and drawings of gift starts to try to promote shopping here. so, if you make a purchase we enter new to a drawing .

small business, shop small, buy local and small business saturday. many of the store owners say they credit social media with helping them over the last few years get the message out. back to you. >> thank you. social media playing a role again the chp said more arrests could be made after the side show on wednesday night. yesterday they released new pictures of the ill gathering where more than 200 watched cars spinning around and doing other tricks. more than 20 were detained for charges like vandalism and driving on a suspended license. >> we will use our skills through the air craft video to determine charges at a later date. we want to make sure the appropriate people are charged with the appropriate crime. >> the chp said many of those who will face charges are from the bay area but it's not clear when they will be arrested. >> a teenager from danville is trying to raise money for friends she made in uga nda. she is a junior in high school

-- i was a little goofy. >> for about -- i would say -- eight days he thought he was president obama. it was 1994 which made no sense. >> reporter: considered a fall risk his hospital bed was alarmed and would alert nurse itself he tried to get out. one night he disarmed it. >> i saw where they pushed the button to turn them off. >> he is smart. >> reporter: he stepped over his sleeping wife, got to his walker and made a break down the hall think he was going to the bathroom. >> i got wobbly. i got wobbly and i went head first in to the wall. woke up everybody. she came running. >> was like an explosion. the entire hospital woke up. >> i said i wouldn't fall . >> reporter: at times he still using a cane and has a back brace to wear when he need it's. he isn't 100% and it'll be a while before he can get back to his golf game. >> it'll be about another

ski hers and snow boarders enjoying the weekend and nature is cooperating. north star said it opened a seventh lift and that has access to popular high mountain trails and a beginner's run. another resort that just opened this week is squaw valley and this season they are also oring new technology to skiers and snow boarders. joining us to talk about that and this new snow fall is melissa. thank you for joining me. >> thank you for having me. >> looks good. is it snow something

>> yes. yeah. winter weather has moved in. we have snow over night. four inches here on the upper mountain, two in the lower. it's-ing to snow on the upper mountain right now. lower has some mix the precipitation. we could see another three to five inches of snow today. you know looking at the forecast it's really looking fantastic all the way through wednesday. it's calling for snow a change in weather. >> i know a lot of people around here at the studios know that i love to ski. there was a lot of high fiving at my house. how are -- how is the snow condition though? obviously winter skiing you want to bundle up. is it okay. should people keep their expectations at a certain level because they should be glad neighborhood temperatures can get on -- glad they can get on the slope? >> it's a great early season storm. it's a bit of a warm storm sot snow is heavy. that's really great for early season because the snow sticks to the slopes like glue really

and so it sticks around. it stays and provides for a great base. >> great. i want to talk about the snow technology involving google glass. explain this to me and what people can do with this google glass app that you have. >> we are the first ski resort to offer the google glass app and it's another way to navigate the mountain better. it'll tell you the trails and lift that are open. the future of the app is cool. you will be able -- it'll have a find a friend feature to find friends on the slopes through navigation. also it'll punch out a -- a detailed list for you. you can input what kind of snow conditions you like. what ability level you are and it'll guide you around the mountain which is cool. this is cool. how many are using google glass that it would go up there and putting under their goggles, it's obviously such a new technology. >> i think our friends friends

you look really, really hard you can see the golden gate bridge in the distance. in addition to the soggy conditions it's a little foggy out there this morning. santa rosa with visibility down to about a half mile in some spots a broad view first of all as mike said over the santa cruz mountains across the south bay. the rain has been coming down this morning. around the central bay we have mostly cloudy skies, little bit of drizzle at times and over the north bay in a bit of break. the sierra seeing snow. let's start why the south bay. light to moderate rain. into san jose. ran jose has reported more than a half inch of rain. i will show you some of these numbers coming up in just a moment. again we know we need the rain. we are excited to see it but it's slick out there. if you are getting outside be prepared for those slick roads, take it easy. bring the um -- umbrella.

twitter and facebook. >> now let's talk at black friday . it's over but it's known as the day that holiday shoppers hit the malls and big box stores looking for the big deep discounts. small business owners are working to claim today. they want -- this is a shopping day focused on them and allie is live in our studio to show us how businesses are prepping for what they hope will be a busy small business saturday. >> reporter: we met up with small business owners planning to take part in this campaign called small business saturday. they said they would offer something different in their stores to attract customers on a day like this. >> we are in downtown pleasanton on main street where the holiday shopping season is in full swing a lot of retailers have the holiday decorations and inventory on display and about 30 businesses are taking part in an event called shop small saturday. it's organized by american express and along about some of

damage after some protesters smashed windows during black friday. >> it came days after a grained jury decision not to charge a police officer for the shooting death of michael brown. this protest started with a peaceful march but a small group be calm destructive a group of employees say they were inside when the protesters smashed the windows with rocks. >> it was just -- it was scary. it was very scary. just because it happened really quickly. it was overwhelming. >> the radio shack employees say some of the protesters stole electronics inside the store one officer suffered cuts on his face during the protest after a demonstrator threw a bottle at a police car. that incident follows three nights of protests in oakland. protesters shut down freeways, damaged and looted stores, 170 people were arrested during those nights of demonstrations on monday, tuesday and

wednesday. >> several protesters facing charges for a demonstration that shut down a bart station. ten people chained themselves to each other and to the inside of two bart trains at the west oakland station. protests stopped service between san francisco and oakland for 90 minutes. eventually police brought in firefighters and you can see they were able to disconnect the bar that one of the protester was attached to. >> marginalized people are being murdered discriminately by the police. it does feel pretty targeted when the majority of people that the police kill are black and brown. >> the protesters facing charges of tess practicing and interfering rail way operations. that disruption created a huge headache for the thousands trying to get to and from san francisco. even with back up service from buses, hundreds of people had to wait an hour or two at the station. some passengers say they did have sympathy but felt that

demolition costs and create a memorial for the structure. but the plan would go again the original permit for the bridge project that requires that all of those piers be removed down to the bay floor. the cost to remove them is expected to be more than $107 million. police are looking for a man who walked in to ia check cashing business and shot a contractor while wearing a werewolt mask. it happened yesterday morning. video shows the man entering the building through that back door. witnesses say that he didn't say anything when he walked up to the contractor and shot him. the 58-year-old contractor was installing a security barrier in the building. he was treated at the hospital and released. >> black friday has come and gone and it appears that malls across the bay area were relatively calm. this is the line up of vehicles yesterday waiting to get into

billion. so smaller retailers tell us that anecdotally it seems like small business saturday is gaining momentum and the numbers from that survey seem to corroborate that. live in the newsroom, allie rasmus ktvu news. the city of oakland also hoping that free parking today is going to get more people to shop in downtown oakland. every saturday through new year's day drivers can park for free at the four city owned lots and at street meters. oakland mayor elect says the downtown businesses could use the boost this year, especially in the wake of recent vandalism. city officials say they still have the to keep the flow of shoppers steady. time limits are still going to be enforced at the meters lots and garages. several businesses in san francisco are cleaning up damage after protesters smashed windows during black friday. the protests came days after a grand jury decision not to charge a ferguson police officer for the shooting death

of 18-year-old michael brown. this protest started with a peaceful march. a small group of demonstrators became destructive. a group of employees at a radio shack say they were inside when protesters started to smash the windows with rocks. >> it was scary. it was a very scary situation just because it happened really quickly. it was overwhelming. >> the radio shack employees say some of the protesters stole electronics inside the store. one officer suffered cuts on his face during the protests. now after a demonstrator threw a bottle at the police car. san francisco mayor ed lee issued a statement. it says in part i respect the rights of those who peacefully protest to have their voices heard about the serious events unfolding in ferguson, missouri. meaningful demonstrations for the purpose of vandalism, looting, and harming police officers disrespect the memory of michael brown and diminish

the voices we need to hear right now. this behavior will not be tolerated and those responsible will be held accountable and prosecuted. that incident follows three nights of protests in oakland. protesters there shut down freeways, damaged and looted stores. several protesters are also facing misdemeanor charges for a demonstration that shut down a b.a.r.t. station. ten people chained themselves to each other and to the inside of two b.a.r.t. trains at the west oakland station. the protest stopped service between san francisco and oakland for 90 minutes. eventually police brought in firefighters who helped to disconnect the bar that one of the protesters was attached to. >> marginnize peel. it does feel pretty targeted when the majority of people that the police kill are black and brown. >> protesters are facing

charges of trespassing and interfering with railway operations. the disruption was a huge headache for some of the thousands of people trying to get to and from san francisco. there was back up bus service, but even with that backup, hundreds had to wait an hour or more at the embarcadero station. some passengers did sympathize with the protesters but felt that shutting down a b.a.r.t. system was not the best way to get their point across. >> i don't think this is a way. you could go about it another route. you're putting all these people at a disadvantage, you know. find some other way. >> we're not in ferguson. shutting down a b.a.r.t. station, what relationship does that have to police brutality. nothing. >> b.a.r.t. says the shutdown did cause lingering delays throughout the system. 9:10. we want to show you a picture, a really powerful picture that's gone viral. check it out. this is a picture of a police officer in a portland oregon. it was taken november 25th. >> by a freelance photographer. he says he saw the boy with tears in his eyes right there,

across the bay area were relatively calm.. this is the lineup of vehicles yesterday waiting to get into valley fair mall. the black friday deals actually started on thursday. this year valley fair opened at 6 in the evening on thanksgiving. the earliest it ever has, and about 50% of those stores stayed open overnight. shoppers say they could not be happier. >> everyone else is like, oh, black friday's crazy, but to me i think everything was pretty cool. >> valley fair says it did its best to accommodate the holiday shoppers. people called merry makers were hired to hand out treats and just smile at everyone. the mall even created a special resting room for shoppers who need today give their feet a break. with black friday over, many shoppers are looking ahead to cyber monday. there are some great deals out there if you're looking to travel. earlier this morning, travel zoo's senior editor gabe joined us live to talk about what people should look for. >> look for a lot of drivable market destinations.

good morning, and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. here are the top stories, several businesses in san francisco are cleaning up after protesters smashed windows during a busy black friday. that protest came days after a grand jury decision not to charge a ferguson police officer for the shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown. and it is one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. this time around it started earlier than ever. today is small business saturday and local shop owners

in the bay area are preparing for some big crowds. ktvu's allie rasmus checked in with some business owners, and coming up in just about a minute we'll have more on the deals you can find around the bay area. really the big story is the weather. rain expected across the bay area today and tomorrow. for more on that let's head over to rosemary who has that weekend forecast. >> you said people in the south bay, i heard the rain last night. then i walked out. i'm like, oh, not so bad. >> right! just breaks here and there right? >> yes. and getting out this morning, not bad at all. you can get out for a run, maybe you're going to do holiday shopping. we've got a nice break in the pattern at this point. giving you a live look there over across oakland into alameda and the east bay hills where we have mostly cloudy skies, a few breaks in the sky with sunshine pulling through for the afternoon. storm tracker still working but not too hard. it has led up quite a bit.

in the overnight hours we had the rain falling over the north bay. we woke up this morning with rain falling quite heavy at times over parts of the south bay, and right here the central bay didn't see a whole lot of rain with this first wave. now we do have more to come. we've got some more rain. it will be just spotty for today, so i think it will be still a good day to be outdoors, just keep that umbrella handy. as we get into the overnight hours, the second round is going to move in. the second half of your weekend will be soggy as well. we have a few scattered showers as you can see in and around novato. napa has reported anywhere from a third of an inch to a half inch. fairfield we've got a little bit of rain in your neighborhood as well. along i-80 it was a little slick. we also have fog this morning. be prepared if you are hitting the roads early. i've got rain falling, talked about it just a short time ago that over the santa cruz mountains we had more than an inch fall so far. so that's some great news. and as we get into the second half of the day, i think we'll

telling me we can't offer 50, 60, 70 percent off discounts, so they've gotten creative and they're focusing on different things they can offer their customers. take a look. >> these aren't necklaces or bracelets, these are actually fancy dog collars you can find at murphy's paw. it's on main street in pleasanton. they are gearing up for the holiday shopping season. you can tell by some of the christmas themed pet toys they have out on display. this is one of 30 businesses in pleasanton that have signed up for an event called shop small saturday. it's organized by american express and the goal is to get shoppers to go to these locally owned independent retailers to give them some business. dean is the owner of murphy's paw. what do you do differently to get people to come into your stores? >> we do a lot of raffles and drawings of gift cards to try to promote shopping here. so if you make a purchase, we enter you into a drawing. >> a way to say thank you to people for coming to shop here.

recommendations for them on how you sort of dove into actually putting your dessert out there and having somebody judge it? >> and i'm really not even all about desserts. i'm all over the boards sweet, savory. my neighbors kind of pushed me into it by sharing my food with others and i've started entering competitions about four years ago, didn't tell a soul. i ended up winning and i say the rest is history. >> there you go. >> where do people get your creations now? >> the good news is i have a cook book coming out which features sweet, savory, pasta, soup side dishes everything under the sun. included with the recipes are going to be videos. >> tell us a little bit what's in this. you talked about the mint. we don't have the power to turn on. >> this is like kind of my magical layer here. >> is this part of the rum too? >> no. this layer has the lime. >> oh, the lime layer. this gets blended together. i add a few more eggs to this

and then. >> how many eggs usually? >> right here mike, four duck eggs, 6-tablespoons of fresh lime juice. >> you got my recipe. >> fresh lime zest. >> if you smell this that's where you get the wow of the lime. now when i presented this dish in vegas, i put a little sliver of fresh meyer lemon on the top because that citrus just goes bam in your mouth. >> how do you present this? you got your plates out here. >> you know, when i was there, i cut them in pretty little circles b if i'm serving a crowd like i am right here with hungry people. >> little bars. >> so my secret is to align my baking pan with foil. you can lift it right out. put it on your cutting board. it makes serving so much easier. >> how long do you have to let it sit? >> when i was in vegas these actually were presented warm and they were a huge hit. normally i chill them for two

hours in the refrigerator. now i found warm or cold they're delicious. >> so who taught you how to cook? >> you know, i followed my grandmother and my mom around the kitchen, and i've always been an adventurer in the kitchen. >> especially when it comes to baking? >> no, everything. >> everything. so my hardest thing is i don't like to follow recipes. >> oh, i follow recipes badly so. >> i have to tell you about the dessert i created for the new orleans round. >> what's that? i took king cake, meets banana foster, meets pecan pray line. i grilled banana wrapped it in cinnamon dough, serve it had warm on a bed of coconut rum custard. then i drizzled it with hot fudge sauce and my pecan praline rum sauce and then some toasted crumbled coconut. >> blowing my mind. >> where do you come up with these? >> i don't know. people and me that all the

animal shelters in santa clara county are encouraging people to considering adopting a pet. the shelters are offering a discount on adult animals as part of its home for the holidays pet adoption promotion. the cost is just $12 through the end of the year. adoptions normally range from 90 to $120. >> we also provide pre and post adoption counseling to help ease the transition into the new home and make it a smooth transition for everybody. >> officials at the shelter says the holidays are a popular time to adopt a pet. many people have time off work and are able to spend time with the newly adopted pets which they say is ideal for welcoming one into their home. san francisco's muttville senior dog rescue is getting help in its effort to help care for older pets. the group received a $20,000 grant from big heart pets brand.

it will be used to buy an ultrasound machine that can help save more dogs. the o rescues -- the organization rescues dogs seven years or older. we are taking donations as part of our annual coat drive called one warm coat. last night our very own bill martin was at a dropoff location in walnut creek taking in those gently used winter coats. those coats are going to be given to people in need to help them stay warm this winter. more than 2,000 coats were collected at that walnut creek site. the drive runs through the the end of the year. there's still time to make a donation. you can do that at four different spots, walnut creek on ice, and down in san jose you can drop off those coats at santana row. it is time for ticket saturday give away. one lucky winner is going to get two tickets to the cabinets of curiosities on thursday january 8th at at&t park. to enter go to the contest page on ktvu.com and fill out the
