i know i did. rain continues to fall throughout the bay area. it's a much needed storm but also causing flooding and spinouts out there on bay area roadways. good morning. >> good morning to you. let's start you off with a look at the weather. when you decided to leave the house since you saw this was a big storm. >> for many of us most of day was dry. of course, when i get to union square, it decide television going rain. that's why i had my rain jacket handy. we'll need is once again for today. the rain continues to fall. heavier in some part but a beautiful view there. pointing to the east coast. the sun is rising. not a lot of sun to see at this hour. we're looking at plenty of light scattered showers and i want to point you off the santa

cruz coastline. thunderstorms all this lightning firing off. hasn't reached ashore just yet. we're going have this for this morning. weave light rain falling over the peninsula. slick roads. 101. we go to the east bay where we have scattered showers in the forecast. oakland, hayward, fremont and into the east bay areas. let's stop -- right here as we get into the north bank. you've got light rain falling and it stretches into areas like napa and farther east into areas like fairfield. so the rain moving through. i think it'll be heaviest this morning as we get intoed afternoon. going see some breaks. we have more rain in the extended forecast. the futurecast model -- coming up. >> all right. thanks. we're going to start off

talking about travel. it doesn't matter what the weather is. people have to get home from the holidays and today is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of year. very, very nice out there. pretty clear during the thanksgiving holiday. holiday season through tomorrow. that airport is predicting that 1.3 million travelers will pass through. it is a nearly 3% increase. now let's take over to -- also looking good out there. officials are estimating that 350,000 travelers will pass through. over in oakland 350,000 people expected. that's up from last year. a 6% from the thanksgiving flying period in 2013. now, even more californians will be on the road today. 5.6million people are traveling 60 mys or more.

tuesday at a park trail. they heard gunshots and saw two men running away. they've released -- >> so much pain for people. they don't know the pain they've created for families and friends. just the confidence of going on a hike. >> nay believe robbery -- they believe robbery was the motive. he taught english and journalism at danville. a memorial is being planned for next month. darren wilson has been on administrative leave since the august 9th shooting. he hopes it'll allow the community to heal, it follows the grand jury decision not to pursue criminal charges for the

mailbox here in santa's workshop. she's one of the creators. tell us how much planning is involved >> . we start the process back in august. when everyone else is hanging out, we're -- we have several meetings between the culinary department, the hotel management and the engineer department. we might have big ideas. >> we want to point out this is this made a gingerbread but there's a wood structure. we can show this is a wooden beam. we face it with masonite so we can attach all of our edible product to it. >> what's the edible product? >> we have about 8 ,000 gingerbread bricks. they're attached with royal icing. 2,000 pounds of royal icing to

attach the bricks. then we atash about a thousand pounds of candy. >> all homemade gingerbread. we make the icing in giant batches. then we put a lot of time and effort into it. >> if we walk through to the other side of the gingerbread house. we have the splices to make our own ginger bread house obviously on a much, much smaller scale. some tips about the best way to construct a gingerbread house. >> we could use some tips. >> i'll pay for the cab ride if she wants to come over. we've been looking at this and -- no directions we're a little lost but it's always exciting to try new adventures. at home it's a mother-son tradition in my family. i don't get too involved in it.

shopper track. americans spent $9.1 billion. that's a 7% drop compared to last year. in store sales on thanksgiving however increased by 24% to $3.2 billion. they expect sales for the last two months of year to hit nearly $617 billion. the amazon distribution center is gearing up for a pretty busy day tomorrow. they're expected to take full advantage of the cyber monday sales. last year they ordered nearly 37 million items worldwide. that breaks down to 346 items per second. cyber monday is the busiest day of the day of the year. it takes thousands of employees. yesterday was small

business saturday. and tomorrow that holiday shopping weekend craziness continues with cyber monday. it's this time of year that security becomes a big issue. we talked to internet security expert who has some tips for people hitting online shores. >> that's right. it's the busiest shopping days of the year. over half of americans are going to be spending most of their money online versus going into stores. what can we do to keep you safe? >> let's say i'm shopping for something my wife would like for christmas. so i placed it in my shopping cart and i want to complete my transaction. when i go to check out, one thing is they ask you for a password or to set up a password. there's some good things you can do. like pick a password that's going it be 8 characters or longer. mix upper and lower case. if you can, on different sites use different passwords.

so if somebody gets your password on one site, they don't have password on other sites. let me log in quickly. when we sign in, there's some things you want to look for that are hallmarks of keeping you safe. trust indicators. first thing is here on the address bar look to the left of the www or whatever the address and instead of looking for ht ttp look for https. it's encrypted. nobody else can see what's going on. you can assume s means safe. this site in particular shows this green element which means that not only is everything encrypted but also that site

especially if you're going to be near the coastline along highway 1 or the peninsula. let's zoom in and get a closer look. we have isolated thunder and lightning reported and very moderate to even heavy rain at times. if we squeeze into santa cruz heavy to moderate rain. twin lakes, it's coming down for you as well. sliding a little bit north up to areas like pacifica. light to moderate rain falling here as well. the peninsula seeing light rain for the most part. the bridge getting -- going be wet, don barrton into the east bay. from the east bay shoreline into areas like antidock. the light rain comets to failing. we've seen pretty good amounts. i'll show you that -- i'll update those numbers coming up.

i'll have a look at our temperatures. back to you. >> thanks. we've been building a gingerbread house this morning. you do need a lot of flour, sugar, seasoning and that's just the start of it. there are many other ingredients. major if you're bidding the taj mahal -- live at the san francisco fairmont hotel. >> this is a gingerbread house. it's the largest one in the state of california. we're in the lobby of fairmont hotel. this is a two-storial gingerbread house. it takes the people months. they start planning to build this back in august and they start constructing it at a wear house. part of novelty is you can walk right through it. if you look inside you can see a -- santa's workshop that they got set up here. the entire frame of this

gingerbread is made from wood. they bring engineers and carpenters in to construct the frame and then they bake the bricks themselves and they start tiling. there it is. this is actual gingerbread. don't want to try to eat it or lick t. they purposely keep the bread out and use it as bricks and tiles for this house. they've got about a thousand pounds of candy. if we come through to the other side the house, you'll see -- we've got some supplies set up. kimberly is the executive pastry chef. she's helping us make our own. so what's the secret to -- we want to talk about the icing here. that's one of the secrets. >> the main secret would be the icing and you always want to use royal icing. >> what's royal icing?

>> it's basically just powdered sugar and egg whites. it's like a glue and it'll be soft when you put it on but it'll dry hard so it'll hold everything together. >> we initially bought this and she told it's not going to get harden. >> it'll probably just fall apart. >> if you use the royal icing you can change the consistency? >> you can make it thinner or thicker depending on how hard you want it to dry. you can use a much thicker to do something like that where you can cement something together. >> we used really, really thick royal icing to attach the bricks. you go ahead and take a trowel and use the spacer and space it out just like real brick and real tile. >> when you come and watch the introduction of it they get confused. >> we're using cement or something like that because of the manner in which we're putting it on but it's the most

efficient way of doing it and we're going to come back with a little bit thinner icing that we for in between the bricks. >> so for the base and the frame, definitely want royal icing. what else do you have to keep in mind? anything special at gingerbread. >> it works better when it's kind of stale. it's actually a good idea to hep it up and let your gingerbread sit off. it'll bend and you can break it a little bit easier but the glue attaches better, the royal icing attaches better. >> we're going to continue to working o this and i think we -- she's doing the brunt of work. but we're going to check back with you in about half an hour. but i'm -- >> that royal icing. >> i don't think the secret -- >> we'll see. >> you do have the secret ingredient and we have nonsecret experience. >> we don't have that.

here in just a moment. off the coastline. slowly work its way in to areas like santa cruz and stretching up. a lot of thunderer thunder and lightening. but nothing like what we were seeing off the coastline. santa cruz, twin lakes, highway 1 is getting a drenching this morning and at this hour -- half of the bay into -- it stretches into the peninsula. and it moves all the way to the east bay. but notice most of the pay area seeing just light rain. it's a light rain over the north bay as well as the east bay. walnut creek seeing some light showers. we had spinouts earlier this morning and spinouts along highway 1. this rain is going to work its way across the bay

pacific. earlier this morning and we'll check in on that. we'll get to that right now. let's turn it over to storm tracker two and show you whation happening this morning. this is what we were looking at and this is what it's going to continue to move ashore. so in the last hour or so, we have watched it move into the santa cruz mowkses. we've watched it move into areas of pacifica. light to moderate rain falling. it continues to move toward the east. this is going to be sweeping across the east bay. it's going weaken as it does. it's already weakened some coming on shore but south san francisco and into san francisco we've got some pretty good rain reported. it's generally light along the peninsula. maybe a steady drizzle. maybe just a light rain. over the north bay we have several with light showers at times. i think with this wave this is right now. the heaviest and the steady

rain. in the second half of your afternoon, it's going to begin to break up. i'm going to show you that coming up. >> all right. so holiday traditions all over and tomorrow is the first day of december. we are getting into the spirit here at ktvu. >> we've been working hard on our own gingerbread house and we're not the only ones. experts who have created a gingerbread house way too big for us to handle here. >> this ginger bread house doesn't you you in spirit, i don't know what will. it's a two-story gingerbread house. it's baked right here. this is the lobby of the fairmont hotel. santa's workshop here and the toy train going around it.

the novelty is you can walk through this gingerbread house and take you through the archway here and give you a closer look at the construction. this is actually a compostable -- they lay the tile on top of it. this is not something you want to eat. you can see from the sign there. the candy here and the gingerbread is actually a few months old. they start baking it baa in september. they purposely leave out for a while so it hardens so it's easy to put on the gingerbread house. now as we come through here to the other side, we've been showing you all morning our attempt on a much smaller scale. execkive pastry chef is helping us with it. this is it. we've been working on it quite a bit. what did we do here? tell us about the frotsing. that's a secret. >> use royal icing. as your frosting.

and that's basically powder sugar and egg whites. you want to use a thicker frosting. >> that's exactly what you guys used to put your house? >> everything is attach ready royal icing t. will dry very hard so your house won't fall apart. >> it's as good as glue or cement. >> i'm going to try to add some of the finishing touches on this gingerbread house. we're going to put some of these on there. >> these are nerd ropes. they're only available at christmas time. it's a special-order product. and it's basically like a jelly roll center. it's a very hot item this time of year. >> how much icing should i put on this? >> that's just about right. >> okay. so not too much. >> just leave -- like a tube of tooth paste. a nice little -- go ahead. stick those right on. >> this is about as involved

that i've been in the gingerbread house i have to admit. kimberly is taking the reigns here. then we do it on the other side here and this is royal icing. it's made with powdered sugar and egg whites. that's what gives us that thick, pasty consistency. you were telling me if you're doing this you got do be careful. >> wipe it up. you want to wipe it up right away before it dries. if you dent to it quick enough and it does dry really hard, you can soften it up again with waters with very hotels and then clean it up. >> this ginger bread house is on the display until january 2nd. what happens after that? >> so we have a really strong commitment to sustain bility. the entire facade comes off and
