bay as well and east bay, you can pick out rain showers closer to 580, livermore, pleasanton as well. not as much coverage in the north bay but spotty scattered showers in sonoma county, santa rosa, and cloverdale. in terms of totals over the past 24 hours impressive. the numbers adding up. san francisco 5 inches of rain -- 2 inches. the 5 inches towards the santa cruz mountains. san jose an inch. livermore an inch of rain. these numbers are not a fraction of an inch but whole numbers out there. tracking the shower chances for thursday and another storm, system to talk about, how strong that will be coming up. flooding closed a number of roads in the north bay today and backed up the commute there. >> paul chambers is in sonoma county where two roads were

shut down and just now reopened. >> reporter: that is correct. it was closed for 6 hours here. all this water was out to the double yellow line. what happened was they used a snowplowed. they plowed the water out into the sidewalk. that took 45 minutes for them to do that. all the water caused major headaches for a lot of people earlier today. >> the rain is putting a damper on businesses in the bay area. high waters flooded the roadway. caltrans closed 121 at route 12 because of standing water. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: getting home wasn't the issue for some. it was getting their morning started. the rain caused lots of flooding across the north bay. >> 3:00 we got a cell pass through that dumped a lot of water on us in a short period

water was down there. crash on interstate 280 in san jose is causing a traffic back up right now. the accident happened near highway 101 interchange an hour ago. the accident involved 4-5 cars. initially it had three lanes brocked. this video shows the wrecked cars. there were only minor injuries reported. traffic on 280 is backed up for several miles in both directions. new video inside a cafe that proceeded a life or death struggle between a police officer and a robber. it happened this morning in san francisco. police say the suspect robbed and assaulted two people before confronting the off-duty officer. ktvu's david stevenson has been following had story. the surveillance video of the

confrontation happened minutes before the fight with the police officer? >> reporter: that's right. police say the surveillance video we are about to show you shows some of the mayhem the suspect committed before he was shot by the officer. surveillance video filmed this morning in san francisco shows a man wrapped in a blanket approaching a female customer. >> a guy came into the cafe and kind of tried to attack some lady. >> reporter: another customer steps between the two. the first man picked up the woman's hot coffee and throws it on her and charges the woman and chase her around -- chases her around a table. he is chased out by a man wheeling a baseball -- wielding a baseball bat. the man entered this apartment building. armed with a chair leg he attempted to rob an off-duty officer leaving his apartment.

>> the officer draws his weapon. identifies himself as a police officer. the suspect tells the officer you are going to have to shoot me. >> reporter: police chief says the officer a 15 year veteran holstered his weapon. >> the suspect goes towards the weapon. >> reporter: the officer was bitten. the gun went off and the suspect was shot once in the upper body. investigators haven't released the suspect's name but he robbed and beaten a man require it the -- prior to the shooting and the confrontation. >> i watched the video. you know, nobody i recognized. >> reporter: the chief says in the struggle for the gun it is not clear whether the suspect

or the officer pulled the trigger. >> thank you. police are looking for more possible victims of an elementary school teacher accused of molesting students. the 52-year-old john lloyd was arrested in october after police received reports he molested a student. he also taught in the past at several law enforcement officers. 4 victims have been -- several elementary school. four victims have also been identified. the sheriff's office added two new tools. these additions come with controversy. ktvu's john sasaki tells us while it sheriff is thrilled the aclu is crying foul over the drones. >> reporter: this was show and

frank ogawa plaza. you can see what they are doing, they are marching down broadway. this is a live picture from news chopper 2. we are estimating there are several dozen protesters, there are also police on hand keeping an eye on them. we have ground pictures as well. you get a sense of how many protesters there are. there is a line of police. stopping them from continuing their march down broadway. keep in mind, this is the height of the evening commute. broadway a key street in oakland. stay away from that area. we don't know how long the protest will last. it just started and organized protest are expected in san francisco tonight as well. we are going to keep an eye on the situation but again developing news here, protesters right now in oakland and police just stopped them from matching down -- marching down broadway in downtown oakland. yeah. that is the situation right now. we will bring you new information as we get it.

started as a pot hole but it grew into a sink hole that is 10 feet deep. it grew throughout the day and it won't be repaired till tomorrow. it is on lake street and 6th avenue in san francisco. ktvu's noelle walker has been there all day. do they know what caused this? >> reporter: they have a guess. they think it is broken pipes but the sink hole despite all the work going on today is very much there right now. they have set up generator lights. this is one of those things that will get worse before it gets better. they cut all of the litter holes and made sure the gas pipes are in tact, which they are, so now the repairs can begin. >> reporter: there is a river
