now at noon, the search is on for a suspect who allegedly rammed a police officer with a stolen car. we'll tell you what brought police to the scene in the first place. san jose leaders make their push to clear out the jungle homeless encampment for good. the reason homeless advocates say is sim blip won't work. and a lingering problems in san francisco where this sinkhole is slowly consuming an intersection. police are calling on the community to help them catch a

suspected thief who rammed an officer with a stolen car, prompting the officer to open fire. good afternoon i'm noelle walker. tori campbell has the day off. the san leandro police officer was hurt around 7:30 this morning. it happened on broadmoore boulevard. sal castanedo is live there now where he's been talking to police about the search for one of the suspects who got away. sal? >> reporter: all right, knoll. you can see this is the block where it happened on broadmoore which is a quiet street here, away from ban cost. not far from 580. it's a nice quiet neighborhood. but at 7:30 this morning, it turned into a crime scene. >> we could hear the sirens and then we heard several gunshots. and then more sirens. >> reporter: the incident began with a phone call. witnesses say a man was relieving himself outside a parked car and someone called police. police say two arriving officers attempted to speak to

the people inside the car and one of them started running away but that was quickly caught. the driver accelerated and ran over a police officer. >> to accelerate your vehicle to run a person owner whether it's a police officer or anybody, we know what kind of a damage a car can do to somebody. today it landed a police officer in the hospital. >> reporter: investigators say officers fired several shots at the vehicle. police say the officer run over should survive his injuries. police are looking for a 1995 white nissan max ma sedan with 3 nda 870 license plate. the car was reported stolen out of oakland on november 29th. officers won't give any information about the man in custody. they also say the white maxima should have front-end damage and bullet holes. people who live here call is a safe neighborhood without a lot of crime. >> i think all of this happened because we have a really good neighborhood crime watch. a lot of us actually call if we see anything suspicious or

different and that's actually how i guess this started. i guess someone was using the restroom on the street. someone called and then that -- and it blew up to what happened. >> reporter: some of the neighbors are amazed that at 7:30 this morning nobody was hurt. a lot of people are out here walking dogs, walking to school. you can see some of the neighbors here are now walking back into the i'm zone. one of the things that we've learned about the officer, 20- year veteran. he's also a member of the crime scene unit and they are not -- police are not releasing his name. he's expected to survive his injuries. back to you. >> thank you, sal. there are new developments this noontime in the deadly police shooting of a san francisco security guard. 28-year-old alexander nieto was shot at least ten times by officers. it happened on bernal hill last march. that shooting followed 911 calls about a man toting a

handgun in the park. police say nieto turned -- pointed what turned out to be a taser at responding officers. ktvu has learned a federal magistrate on wednesday ruled that the city must disclose the names of the officers involved and give the initial police reports to attorneys for the family. that family has filed a civil lawsuit. lawyers with the city attorney's office have said the names should remain confidential because ofs called in against the -- of threats called in against the officers. a former south carolina police chief is being charged with murder in the 2011 shooting death of an unarmed man. richard combs was the police chief in utahville. that's about 55 miles from charleston. he killed 54-year-old bernard bailey of a an argument about a broken taillight ticket. the police chief shot bailey twice in the chest. the chief is white. bailey was black. comb's lawyer said the former chief feared for his life. prosecutors say the police

chief was the aggressor. this comes just one day after a grand jury in new york decided against indicting a police officer involved in the death of eric garner in july. cell phone video shows officer daniel pataleo in plain clothes putting the 350-pound garner in a chokehold. the maneuver was banned by the nypd two decades ago. the medical examiner ruled garner's death a homicide. officers approached him because they suspected he was illegally selling cigarettes. garner resisted the officers but not physically. he is heard on the recording questions officers who approached him and then saying he couldn't breathe as he was placed in that chokehold. >> do your job! >> about 300 protesters hit the streets of oakland after the grand jury in the eric garner case. protesters marched toward oakland police headquarters through downtown and then ended up at city hall.

police officials say the protest was far more peaceful than the ferguson protest last week which led to 169 arrests and businesses getting vandalized. the largest demonstrations, though, last night were in the city of new york, where thousands of protesters blocked access to the lincoln tunnel, stopped traffic on a major highway, and marched across the brooklyn bridge at midnight. they also tried to disrupt the annual tree lighting ceremony at rockefeller center. new york police arrested at least 83 people throughout the night. cleanup crews have descended on an area known as the jungle in san jose. the city is hoping to clear the long-standing homeless encampment once and for all. christien kafton explains the city's plan and why homeless advocates say it just won't work. >> reporter: before done, san jose police and city crews began to move into the area known as the jungle preparing to clear out one of the nation's largest homeless encampments. robert geary says the problem

is with high rents in silicon valley, where will he go? >> we've gone to the city and asked the city for legal campgrounds to set up and some other place away from the waterways. some place where we can, you know, guarantee everybody's security. >> reporter: as the sun came up up, the magnitude of the cleanup was clear. crews moved heavy machinery into place. as in previous cleanups in the area, city workers will first go through the camps checking for people, animals and valuables for dismantling the damp. this time the city will be putting up a permanent fence along story road restricting vehicle access trying to prevent the homeless community from returning. >> this represents an unsafe place. we don't want people coming back here. >> reporter: homeless advocates say there isn't enough affordable housing to meet the

needs of home -- needs of the homeless. >> this has been a housing initiative. it's been driven by the understanding that the underlying issue here is homelessness and we need to address the homeless issues first. >> reporter: san jose police say they will be out here monitoring the situation today and say they will be here tonight to make sure nobody tries to move back into the jungle overnight. they expect the entire cleanup operation to take about two weeks. in san jose, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco city officials say it's expected to take several more days to repair a massive sinkhole that opened during yesterday's storm. right now, crews are at 6th and lake in the city's richmond district, where the roads buckled yesterday morning creating a 20 bay 20-foot crater. that's nine feet deem. city officials say an 8-inch water main underneath the road also broke. crews are working to repair the water main as well as a gas main that was affected. the street is expected to be fix and reopened by early next

week. nasa had toup plans to launch the orion rocket. the mission is on hold on tomorrow. alex savidge was there in mountain view during the series of problems that forced the cancellation today. >> reporter: a lot of spectators who came here to the viewing party were frustrated. but many say they understand that nasa doesn't want to take any chances when it comes to this critical mission. at least 100 or so people gathered to watch orion blast off into space this morning, but there was a series of setbacks at the kennedy space center in florida. at first, it was a boat that strayed into the launch area, then it was the winds that were the problem and then finally nasa was troubled by a valve issue and that's when the decision was made to scrap the launch for today. >> very disappoint. i understand there's safety concerns. i hope that they will figure out what was wrong and it will

go off. >> reporter: this test flight will really be the first step in nasa journey to mars. the hope is orion could one daycarery humans. when it launches, scientists will analyze how the navigate systems are operating. after that orion will make an important re-entry through the atmosphere and that's when the capsule will get the trial by fire. orion will be enduring temperatures about 4,000 degrees fair ren heat. that will put the heat shield to the test that was developed here at the ames research center. >> once it reepters the atmosphere, the heat shield will compress the air in front of it, generate a strong shock and that create as lot of heat transferred to the heat shield. >> reporter: this test flight will take about four and a half hours and orion will splash down into the pacific ocean 600 miles southwest of san diego.

breaking news out of washington, d.c. where the house just passed a bill declaring president obama's executive action on immigration number and void -- -- dash null and void. it would have little chance of passing in the senate which is controlled democrats for now. some fast-food workers are walking off their jobs today in oakland to demand higher pay

and union rights. >> what do we want! >> some strikers targeted this taco bell at 98th and bancroft with a noisy protest. they claim the restaurant is under poor management. this is part of a nationwide movement calling for workers to be paid $15. they also want union representation. organizers say fast food workers in 160 cities across the country are walking off their jobs today. if you got your flu shot this year, you might still be at risk for getting sick. the centers for disease control says the virus has mutated. health experts decided on the three strains of virus to include in this year's vaccine based on information that he had last february. well, the latest information shows 52% are different strains compared to the ones in the vaccine. the cdc says even though current vaccine does not

protect you as well as in recent years, it can still decrease the severity of this year's most common flu strains. the 49ers/raiders rivalry heats up this weekend, when the bay area teams face off at oakland's coliseum. this is the first matchup between the two since 2011 when the game was marred by violence. heather holmes tell us about the extra security measures for sunday's game. >> reporter: the raging football rivalry between the san francisco 49ers and oakland raiders exploded into violence at the preseason game in 2011. multiple fights and brawls broke out amongst fans both inside and outside. a man was beaten unconscious inside a restroom. two people were shot in a parking lot. >> by that time, his friend was on the ground. >> reporter: we talked to the father of one of the shooting victims at the hospital the next day. >> they were kicking him in the face and in the head. they were pulling the guys off of him. my son didn't -- he got out of

the truck and took two steps and someone shot him. >> reporter: but this time, when the silver and black face off against the red and gold at the coliseum, there will be more men and women in blue. the raiders announcing today there will be a substantial increase of uniformed officers from the oakland police department and alameda county sheriff's office as well pass extra undercover officers and private security staff. cliff branch was at the raiders ears shop on hergen berger ahead of the match up. >> battle of the bay. >> reporter: he knows the importance of the game, a rivalry that sometimes simmers and boils over. >> i played for the raid force 15 years. there was a rivalry back in those days. >> reporter: hopefully, not a battle of the fans. the teams used to meet once a year in the preseason but the violence in 2011 ended that series. now that the game is back, no one is taking chances. the raiders are saying --

>> have fun. enjoy. it should be a great clash. >> 50,000 people are expected to be at sunday's game. in addition to uniformed officers, they will have undercover officers in the crowds. the last deadly supertyphoon to hit the philippines was just over a year ago. now they are bracing for another one. the stormary course is uncertain but appears to be heading to the city. the people devastated by the typhoon last year have been lining up supplies to see them through this storm. that typhoon killed more than 6,000 people. some experts are urging evacuations. that supertyphoon is expected to hit the philippines on saturday. authorities are monitoring hillsides in southern california. the rain overnight washed out a road in riverside county, trapping people in thick mud.

firefighters rescued more than a dozen people from five vehicles this morning. they were trapped for more than an hour. no one was injured. the rain storm happened after flash flooding was caused in the area. well, significant rainfall over the past a few day, not only in the bay area but down in southern california. we're not done with the rainfall yet. today could be considered somewhat of a break day. looking out toward mt. diablo, you can see a lot of clouds. but also some breaks in the clouds as well. to the south of this camera point, we do haven't an earthquake that happened. 11:28 this morning. this was nine miles to the west of morgan hill, 3.20. as far as the radar here, you can pick out the coverage ovaller a good portion of northern california. mainly the snowshowers up above 7,000 feet out toward the sierra. here's the latest right now on

stormtracker2, in a little bit of activity to report. as i mentioned, we're not completely dry. a few scattered showers in parts of the south bay with a chance into the afternoon hours up to about 2:00, 3:00. up in the north bay there's the coverage out towards napa and st. helena, just north of fairfield, some light, moderate cells for this part of the region. as far as current numbers, it's mild. look at all of the 60s. as a result, mild temperatures. san jose, 65. santa rosa, 62. fairfield in the 60s as well. next system, scheduled to move onshore tomorrow. rainfall expectations about .25 to possibly an inch. heaviest for the afternoon and evening commute. more rain and snow up in the sierra with snow levels up above 7500 feet. next system you pick out the satellite perspective. it will be approaching the coastline. for today, sun/cloud mix. the possibility of a few

isolated showers. as the cold front moves onshore form we'll bring in more rain chances. heaviest in the north bay. the showers could linger into saturday primary -- primarily for the morning hours. tomorrow morning's commute there's a chance of rainfall but a better bet into the afternoon hours at 4:00 into friday night as well. that chance will linger into saturday morning. there is a chance slight chance of a shower sunday afternoon. your weekend will not be a washout. forecast highs for this afternoon, a lot of 60s. mid- to upper 60s. a few spots right around 70 degrees. and here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast and more rain clouds to talk about. couldn't even kind a rain cloud to put on the forecast. but you can see a lot to talk about here. a few spotty showers. the next system moves onshore tomorrow and a chance of showers into the weekend. but the next one organized on friday moves into monday. a very productive weekend in the bay area. >> nice to see the hills greening up.

barnes & noble announced it would buy its way out of a deal with microsoft. the markets have been recovering later in the day. u.s. postal office police made a move this morning to break up a month's hold enkarnment outside of the berkeley post office, the tents and bed rolls went into the place earlier this year after the postal service announced plans to sell the historic building to a private developer. campers say the building should go to the city for public use. today, police told campers they had to go and removed belongings of people who weren't there. >> if i go away for a while from my apartment, does that give somebody the right to take myself because i'm not there? that's the logic. if you are here to claim your property, take t if not, we're gonna load it into that truck over there. >> last month the city of berkeley got a restraining order blocking the sale. the hearing on that matter is set for december 10th. a programming note. starting monday, you will be able to go inside the tmz
