on both sides of the bay and from coast to coast, thousands of people are on the move tonight conveying a crisis of confidence in police. good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. a second round of protests after a grand jury in new york decided it would not indict a white police officer in the death of a black man. the epicenter of the outrage is new york city where thousands of people shut down traffic, they also stopped the traffic on the brooklyn bridge. at one point protesters layed

down in front of a police car near the lighting of the national christmas tree. the protesters also closed a bridge and tunnel as they moved through the nation's capital. and in boston, thousands more marched around the city with the same call for justice. they stopped at a tree lighting event, the state house and city hall. the protesters also managed to get on to the major highway, interstate 90 before troopers moved them out. and we're seeing protests here in the bay area as well. a protest organized in san francisco temporarily stopped traffic. several muni lines were rerouted as protesters demanded justice. and across the bay area oakland, 75 people gathered at 14th and broadway and then marched through downtown. protesters held signs calling for an end to what they say is

police brutality. commuters also faced delays as b.a.r.t. temporarily closed down the fruitvale station and at one point a protester was throwing rocks. >> reporter: they are on the move frank, we understand the group slit into two different sections, one that is at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station right now. they've lowered the gate and closed that station now. all of them part of a national movement in what's become what some call are a crisis in confidence in police. >> reporter: the crowds of protesters have become a familiar sight. the chants a familiar sound. protesters in oakland thursday night marched with signs

reflected at scenes nationwide. feelings of rage and lost confidence in their police department. investigators found cleveland's police department has had a pattern of excessive force. >> the tragic losses of these and far too many other americans have sparked an important conversation between a trust that must be looked at between americans and law enforcement. after he put an unarmed black man garner in a lethal choke hold. garner, trayvon martin and brown. while the circumstances were different in cases.

>> reporter: when payday comes, how closely do you look at your paycheck? some of us trust our employers to get it right. >> how closely do you look at your paycheck? >> some what accurately. >> reporter: that wasn't always haeping -- happening when they looked at the slice of a san francisco police department. including thousands of dollars paid out in overtime for officers working special events including parades. >> while we don't know the amount of errors we're seeing this is cig -- significant enough that we want to change. >> reporter: a review of 66 police time sheets revealed 66% were not signed or dated properly by the police department. >> our department is working hard to correct those and make sure from this time forward it doesn't happen again.

>> reporter: the department is still working to make sure officers who received extra bilingual pay are actually certified bid the city in a second language. one of the last steps collecting about $4,000 from officers who were overpaid more than a year ago. >> it's very tough to go back a year after the fact and that's to have that money reimbursed by the city. we're working with them closely. >> reporter: auditors say they found no wrong doing on the part of the officers themselves. they say a new automated system could solve the problems in the system. eric rasmussen. new at 10:00, a family owned business targeted by thieves at a time when their business should be thriving. what it contained cannot be replaced. ken pritchett is in the south bay now with the story, ken. >> reporter: well that large white trailer was hitched up to that pick up truck parked about where you see it in front of

detected head lights at 1:11 tuesday. george was gone, a day before they were going to use it to sell candy. >> we had $12,000 worth of candy ready to go and we couldn't go. >> reporter: the cart is unique to their business affairs a thief might simply toss it out and keep the trailer. >> that's just a nightmare. it's been raining a couple of days and it is wood. >> and an old cart. >> rain is going to kill it. >> reporter: the cart contains signs, stools and other valuables. but. >> george is the main thing. >> that's really what we want back. >> reporter: the trailer says trailer plus on the back door and it had a roof rack on top, it was custom so that would set it apart. they've scoured the neighborhood looking for the cart, they're hoping others will do the same and call police if it's spotted. >> let's hope this publicity tonight will help them find

lundie and ridgeway a quiet residential neighborhood. now residents tell me that it was a fluke that they were able to find this engagement ring under the home. >> my hands were full of soap and water, i had just flushed the toilet and the ring fell off my finger into the bowl. the ring was in the toilet and i was about to be in the toilet. >> reporter: in trouble sort to speak with his fiance. >> what did you say to him? >> not much. i was very quiet. >> reporter: that happened last month. warren says he wrote it off as a loss until about 2-1/2 weeks ago. >> i was watching channel 2 when i heard about the somebody having lost their ring or whatever, a ring or whatever it was down the plumbing. >> reporter: warren says because of ktvu's story about city workers helping someone retrieve a lost ring he called pacifica sewage department.

>> it's like a needle in the hay stack and we didn't think we were going to have a chance. >> going down. >> reporter: still martinez says his crew was in the area doing maintenance work and wanted to help. >> we can do our job and do something above and beyond at the same time. >> reporter: this is video from the camera that was lowered under ground for the search. water in the sewage pipe is usually murky. but the recent rains made it pretty clear. still the first time the camera was used to search on tuesday no ring. but this worker said he had a hunch, so the next day he gave it another shot and what do you know. >> it was gold so it was very shiny. we had a light on the camera, so i was able to -- we were able to see quite well, all the scars and wounds lit up and we had the right conditions. >> reporter: another worker scoops the ring up with a net. >> it was in the mud. we were like it's right there so we got it out. >> reporter: much to the surprise of everyone involved. >> that was amazing. it's good to know people really care. >> it wasn't something in their

job description. it's just something they wanted to do. >> thank you guys. thank you for that. >> reporter: the ring was found about 1,000 feet from the couples home. they tell me they never expected to get it back especially because it was lost a month ago. >> what are the chances. that is just so nice they found that. amber lee, thanks amber. >> love that story. well crews are setting up efforts to fix a massive sink hole in san francisco's inner rich neighborhood. the hole is 9 feet deep. city crews say a storm rain pipeline broke. gas and water service has not been restored to the neighborhood but it will take time to fix the sewer line. it is expected to be done by monday or tuesday. the chief of san mateo county central fire department is free on bail after pleading not guilty to grand theft and

fraud. investigators say he and his wife set up credit cards under fake names then withdrew money. the chief was released on $80,000 bail and ordered to surrender his passport. his wife already left the country but will face charges if she's found. fast food workers held a ruckus but peaceful protest this afternoon they stormed into a bay area mcdonalds demanding a pay raise. >> reporter: the take over happened in seconds in this mcdonalds. thousands urged employees to walk off the job and they did. it's part of a push to form a union. >> everyone gets treated like we're smaller than everyone else. the pay shows. >> reporter: the march was led

here to fight. >> reporter: police say they cooperated with demonstrators. they made no arrests and no property was damaged. reporting in oakland, cristina rendon, ktvu news. got a few areas of fog out there right now. here comes the next weather system. it gets here by tomorrow afternoon. after lunchtime, showers already showing up on the north coast. we've got a lot of fog out there right now. we'll come in a little bit closer as we look at the showers. the moisture at the surface is creating areas of dense fog out by berkeley, up by albany, over toward tunnel road up in berkeley. out toward oakland as well and on the bay bridge. dense fog advisories if you're going over the bay bridge you might see them flashing the dense fog sign. fog in neighborhoods tomorrow morning for sure. around 7:00 a.m., it gets mostly cloudy and not from fog but from high clouds. we start to see light sprinkles. morning commute mostly dry. but cloudy and just that kind of maybe intermittent wiper thing. it shouldn't be a big deal breaker for the morning

hayan. that's why missions are braving the storm and preparing for help. >> we need to have a way that can be ready to go. money, food, that kind of thing. >> people have been hearing this since this week. we've been trying to get a quick response to get communities together. >> reporter: rosemary miguel says all she can do right now is pray, pray her loved ones ride out this storm like they did the last. >> my prayers is just for them. survival. >> reporter: and the philippines president is urging a quick response. the military is on alert and thousands of families have been evacuated from low lying and coastal areas. julie. >> sending prayers their way. azenith thank you. in southern california a huge clean up is under way after storms there triggered mud slides. heavy equipment was needed to remove several feet of mud in river side county near gilman

it's part of the team's plan to help the high school players through a tough period. last month one of their teammates 16-year-old rodney fraizer was shot and killed outside his home. >> seeing my kids smile and seeing their eyes light up after what we've been through the last few weeks it's been amazing that the warriors would do this for them. >> reporter: last night a group of warriors including steve kerr attended the warriors home game. a preschool in fremont is temporarily shut down after an accident there injured two people. a bookcase fell during nap time at the enlight preschool almost two weeks ago. one child suffered a fractured skull. another had facial injuries. now the department of social services has temporarily cancelled the school's license. the school didn't seek immediate medical attention for the which i -- attention for the children and made

unapproved chains. flavio caballero, oscar aruilas and morgan are accused of the fatal shooting of nathaniel torrez in the town of windsor last june. three other teens were wounded. prosecutors have not said what the motive may have been. a san leandro police officer was seriously injured today when he was hit-and-run over bay car. officers arrested a young man at the scene but spent hours looking for the female driver. they finally found the girl who was 16 years old and arrested her late this afternoon. as rob roth found out, it started adds -- started as a neighbor looking out for other neighbors. >> reporter: it started as a call to police. >> someone was using the

restroom on the street. someone called and it blew out to what happened. >> reporter: what happened occurred on broadmore boulevard. as police was talking to the people inside, the passenger opened the door and started to run. >> when the driver of the vehicle quickly accelerated, narrowly hit the officer and actually struck the second officer and ran over him. >> reporter: at least one of the officers drew his gun. >> in self-defense, the officers fired at the driver of the vehicle. >> reporter: police found the nissan maxima with this license plate a few hours later in east oakland. it had bullet holes in it. police arrested the passenger. the officer suffered serious but nonlife threatening injuries. >> there appears to be a substantial amount of blood at the scene that was from the police officer who was doing nothing more than responding to

new at 10:00, an east bay family is looking for justice two years after their loved one was killed in berkeley. on december 4, 2012, 50-year- old pamela mullens was shot in the head while riding her bike near long fellow middle school. the crime scene was just a block from her apartment. mullens family held a vigil tonight hoping someone would come forward. >> she didn't deserve it. she didn't deserve to die the way she was murdered. >> reporter: mullens family says she was making a quick trip to the store and they

believe she was confronted. berkeley police told us they don't believe it was a random incident. police are offering a $15,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. an east bay parent walked into their 12-year-old daughter's bedroom and found a registered sex offender in there with her. that parent was able to held jose simentil until police arrived. police say he befriended the 12- year-old girl and contacted her through a texting app. he now faces one count of burglary. bill cosby is trying to take action against one of his accusers calling her claims baseless. julie huff claims cosby molested her when she was only 15. she filed suit under a state law covering under aged victims of sex crimes.

cosby's attorney asked a court to dismiss her claim saying she tried to extort $200,000 from cosby. today the u.s. navy revoked cosby's honorary title of petty officer. a military group released a video of luke summers. al-qaida and the arabian peninsula says he will be killed in three days if its demands aren't met. the rescue attempt was made last month but summers had already been relocated. the olympic trials for the 2016 summer games will be held in san jose. dozens of young gymnasts were on hand to help deliver the

exciting news. the competition is scheduled for early july in 2016 at the sap center. the event is one of the key qualifying competitions before the summer olympics in rio de janeiro. san jose hosted the olympic trials back in 2006. and it was all about getting into the spirit. today was the holiday stroll in the oakland hills. brought out a pretty nice crowd to celebrate the community. dozens of businesses stayed open late. many of them offering music and drinks. santa claus also made a visit. he cruised through the streets in a classic car and after took pictures with the kids. and our chief meteorologist bill martin is back.

time is up for people living in a large homeless encampment in san jose named the jungle. officers posted eviction notices. despite help from the city, many people say they have nowhere to go. >> that's my yard right there. >> reporter: thomasjimenez says he had a king sized bed in that house and wall to wall carpet. now what he has left is packed into a small shopping cart. >> we're already homeless. and now we're really homeless. they don't want us to be on the street but now they're taking this away from us, so where are we going to go. >> reporter: jimenez isn't

among those who have been replaced. >> we have two pit bulls, a lot of clothes, a lot of stuff. >> reporter: the dogs make alternate housing a challenge plus jimenez doesn't want to be separated from his girlfriend and their adoptive daughter and her boyfriend. >> i have to figure out where i'm going from there. >> reporter: the group decides to migrate to the wal-mart parking lot where many others have congregated. >> they have a uhaul coming. >> reporter: the hope is that the person coming with a uhaul will transport them some where else. >> we're doing so far right now. now they're rethinking the motel idea hoping to sneak the dogs in after all but the uhaul at least on this trip has passed them by. and while the people are now gone, city officials say will take them two weeks to fully clear the degree out of the

jungle. in san jose, ann rubin. ktvu news. a nasa mission is on hold until tomorrow. the space agency scrubbed this morning's test flight of the next generation orion rocket. about 100 people gathered at nasa aims research center hoping to watch orion blast off from cape canaveral in florida but there were set backs. at first a boat strayed into the law firm area and then the winds became too strong. finally nasa was troubled by a valve issue. nasa says it will try again tomorrow about 4:00 a.m. our time. starbucks is offering a way to avoid long lines in the new mobile ordering feature. people in portland oregon can begin using their mobile phones to make orders. when you arrive your coffee should be ready. the san francisco company listen to this, uber is now

valued at $40 billion. that makes it one of the most valuable privately held companies in the world. uber raised more than a billion dollars in it latest round of funding from venture capitalists but you will recall an uber executive came under fire for suggests that the company pay $1 million to dig up information about a reporter who was not fond of the company. a stimulus package calming fears of a recession. oakland's first friday festival has been cancelled tomorrow because of the rain. the event is usually held rain or shine on the first friday of every month in oakland's uptown district. but organizers cancelled the event because of the amount of rain in the forecast. also there will not be a first friday on january 2 so the next event will fall on february 6. we're talking about more

rain headed our way in the forecast. before that happens, we have a bunch of fog out there. look at this shot from san francisco. that's the bay bridge off in the distance. what this is is a coastal fog and valley fog mixing up. we have a real dense fog in san francisco on the bay bridge and on the golden gate bridge. visibility low in emoryville and oakland as well. be careful as you travel about tomorrow. we're going to see a change in the weather again tomorrow as this next system we've talked about it already. kind of pushes off to us and what it'll do is it'll increase the cloud cover tomorrow and the subtropical moisture. look where it's coming from right. a lot of subtropical cool and warm air is going to dump pretty good rainfall on us later in the day from about noon to 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon. at least that's how it looks like now. we're going to talk about the fog out by alameda. fog highway 24 at the tunnel here. and then fog out on toward berkeley and out toward albany. just be ready for that.
