because it may rain. >> it may a little bit but i think the morning commute is okay. the afternoon commute, evening could be a little tough as our system gets a little closer. it's still giving us some light rain. we are still getting light rain. snow will be very high. this is another mild to warm system. it looks like rain developing out of the valley. we've had a couple reports up around windsor. it looks like it's very light. right near point rays as well. and then also coming right into san jose and the santa cruz mountains. over all cloudy. the rain picks up a little bit later. temperatures in the 50s to near 60 degrees. it will pick up a little later. maybe some thunderstorm activity as well. cloudy, rain. rain picks up late morning and early afternoon. continues into the evening. heaviest will be to the north.

sending astronauts to mars. >> three, two, one, and lift off. at dawn. the dawn of orion and the new era of american space exploration. >> this happened possibly when you were sleeping. they blasted off at 4:05 this morning pacific time. orion will orbit earth twice before splashing down in the pacific ocean south of san diego. ha is scheduled for 8:28 this morning. engineers at nasa and ames helped develop orion. the work crews are going as fast as they can to fix that big sink hole. the one in san francisco before the next storm comes in this afternoon. it opened up during wednesday's rainstorm at the intersection of sixth and lake in the richmond district. coming up for you at 6:30, ktvu alex savidge is out there. he will tell us when the repair work on that sink hole should

be finished. make sure you stay right here with ktvu news for all the coverage. you can get the current and weather conditions. bart is ramping up efforts to stop bike thefts at its stations with a new program to protect passengers from having their wheels stolen. and brian flores is at the rockridge bart station. >> reporter: you know that bikes are allowed on bart, it's not necessarily a bad thing. many people use that to take advantage of that. at least from barts standpoint it's important to have more bike racks. but also includes educating people about how to keep your bikes secure. representatives from bike east bay will be on hand at bart stations during the evening commute hours. sharing tips and handing out free prevention materials. bikes are allowed on bart, but bart encourages riders who

don't need your bike on both ends of your route to use bike parking. the plan is to expand those options to more bart stations. there are also bike stations under control. officials with bart say they are planning bike stations at concord and pleasant hill stations. they hope to to have those open sometime next year. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. the city of san jose has

been -- many more still have no place to go. >> we're already homeless and now we are displaced homeless. they don't want us on the streets yet they are taking this away from us. >> the new stats show about 5,000 people are on the streets of san jose most nights. as for all of that debris out there stacked up in the jungle, it's going to take about two weeks to clear it all out. >> sunday's big game between the raiders and 49ers is now sold out. that means fans not heading to the oakland coliseum can watch the battle of the bay right here on ktvu channel 2. the kick off 1:25 sunday afternoon. sunday's game is the first time since 2002 that the raiders have hosted the 49ers at the coliseum. that was the same year the raiders advance to the super bowl. >> let's hope it's peaceful and fun. it is beginning to look a lot like the holidays all over the bay area. and ktvu tara moriarty is on a

downgraded over night but winds are still expected to reach up to 145 miles an hour and waves may get up to 45 feet high. the storm is headed for the same area already devastated by super typhoon hyon last year. we talked to people here in the bay area that have family members in the philippines. while the storm is not supposed to be as strong as hyon. a storm of places hit by the storm, they will still recovering. rosemary miguel says her family survived the last storm, but she is worried about their safety this time around. >> if it's going to hit us hard or even close to how it was with hyon, they are going to go through the same thing. they are going to be suffering again. >> bay area organizations are really keeping a close eye on that storm. they are getting ready to help out. they are looking at ways they send money and food to the families that need them.

backed up to a 20-25 minute delay. it's always funny. say this is a look at north and southbound 880. the traffic is moving well. if you are going to the oakland airport, it shouldn't be too bad. if we put up the map of the east bay, it's not all that bad. if you drag it over more into the center here, usually see a lot more red by this hour. but we're not asking any questions. we're just going to leave it the way it is. it's looking pretty good. let's go to steve. sal, i love that story we just ran by mike mibach. >> he did a good job. >> i'm a world war ii buff so ha is -- so that is interesting. we do have cloudy skies. here is some light rain. it will pick up a little bit later as the next system moves in. two forecast models are very cold and wet.

heavy rain will be focused to the north. still rain son the way. light rain in the morning. just mainly cloudy. it will be heavier for the afternoon commute. there is not a lot going on until about noon when this system inches closer. but then it starts to roll in here by 3:00 takes us into 6:00, 5:00, that tells you it will be probably pretty tough here on the evening commute. there might be a little break later tonight by 10:00. and then sweeps over into early saturday morning. there will still be some rain. probably about 8:00 in the morning things will calm down. a little bit of rain coming out of medesto and the valley. for us it's a lot of cloud cover. light rain to very light. it looks like some up near fort bragg but not a lot. and coming in along the coast. we are waiting for this system to move in. for most of the morning commute it looks pretty quiet. michael says it has misty light

rain conditions. it looks like it's picking up a little bit. it's on its way. everything is so moist. so much moisture in the air. there are a few thundershowers possibly later this afternoon and today. 50s mainly. to 60 degrees at sfo. 31 tahoe. no warnings up in the sierra. his is a warm system as well. it looks like rain until about 7,000 feet. 50s for many here. a lot of cloud cover moving back in. possibility of brief heavy rain. the focus will be to the in order. now again we will get some rain. some areas to the south. everybody is in on this rain and the heavier amounts again look what happens by sunday it starts to move back in. cloudy with rain. rain picks up later though. it's kind of quietier. heaviest to the north bay. rain is on the way for late morning and early afternoon. after early morning saturday rain it will clear out. next system will come in sunday

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:24. east bay family is look for justice two years after 50-year- old pamela mullens was shot in the head while riding her bike. just a block from her apartment. her family held a vigil last night hoping someone will come forward with information. berkeley police say they don't think the killing was random. police are offering a $15,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. time 16:24. we will change gears. we will talk about this story here. some city workers in pacifica they are being praised, credited for going beyond the call of duty. they helped a couple retrieve a

lost engagement ring that went down the sewer. larry says his ring slipped off his finger, went down a flushing toilet. he thought it was gone for good until he saw a story we did on here. so he called pacifica sewage department. the crew just happened to be in the area doing pipe maintenance work. they wanted to help out. they used a camera, put it down the sewage pipe. the water is usually pretty murky but all the rain made it pretty clear. >> it was gold so it was very exciting. we had a light on the camera and so we were able to see it quite well. it stars and moon lined up. we had the right conditions. >> it wasn't something in their job description. it was something they wanted to do. >> the ring looks good. that ring had gone about 1,000 feet from their house.

the new devil slide tunnel south of pacifica will be closed for six hours starting at 10:00 tonight. it has nothing to do with the recent stormy weather. they are shutting down the weather. san francisco also putting tons of sand back where it came from. 42,000 tons of sand will be moved down to the south end. they pushed sand from the south end of the beach to the north and as it builds up, it's hard for people to get to the beach. it can also bury wildlife habitats. the sand moving project is scheduled for bay area projects. coming -- and the race is on this morning to repair this massive sink hole in san

for us out to the valley it looks like sacramento is picking up more than us. a few little reports coming out of the santa cruz mountains. things are beginning to show right near sunnyvale and saratoga. we're all right for the morning commute. the afternoon and evening looks tough. >> and there is a strong correlation between collisions and rain. may not be a causal link, we don't know, but yo know how it

goes. when it rains people get into crashes. keep that in mind. this is a look at 280 northbound as you get up to highway 17. it is moving along pretty well. as steve mentioned some rain over the santa cruz mountains. 580 is better than it normally is. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a little bit of a backup here as you come up to the pay gates. about a 30 minute backup getting into san francisco. work crews are speeding up efforts to fix the massive sink hole in san francisco before the next storm moves in later today. alex savidge is joining us live from the richmond district. alex. >> reporter: sal, gong to you. the rush is on to wrap up the repair work on this massive sink hole in san francisco. because more rain is coming and that is not what work crews need out here. you can see the scene this morning. the progress is being made here on this project. we're learning a little bit

more this morning also about what caused this huge sink hole. it turns out it was a broken storm drain. all that water eroded the sand underneath the road and that is what trig triggered this collapse. the 20-foot by 20-foot crater opened up. here at the intersection of sixth and lake. this sink hole runs about nine feet deep. late yesterday gas and water service was restored to this neighborhood. crews will now be spending today fixing the sewer lines nearby. it may take until early next week to finish all the repairs related to this huge sink hole. in the meantime there is quite a bit of storm damage up in marin county. let me show you surveillance video that shows flood water seeping through. all around the bay area many

street. police say a hit and run driver hit a woman crossing the street. she was not seriously hurt but police are still looking for the driver who witnesses say was behind the wheel of a gray nissan sedan. and also a man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car while walking across san francisco's great highway. it happened near john f. kennedy boulevard last night. the man was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. police say the woman driving the car stopped immediately and cooperating with investigators. time is 6:35. oakland police car was damaged last night during a second night of protests after a new york grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer for the death of an unarmed african american man. about 300 people marched in downtown oakland raising the issue. raising awareness of the crisis of confidence of police officers. a group of protestors

splintered off. they rallied at the fruitvale bart station. forcing it to temporarily shut down. close friend of martin luther king junior was talking about race relations. protestors are planning another demonstration tonight at 7:00. now this protest in san francisco briefly stopped traffic on market street last night. several dozen demonstrators gathered at market and powell. at one point they forced a few muni lines to be rerouted. and in new york city it is still the epicenter of all the protests to the police around

the country. 200 people have been arrested so far as thousands of demonstrators fanned out across the city last night from the brooklyn bridge to the new york police headquarters. the daughter of the man you see on the picture here says the police officer who applied that choke hold to her father should take responsibility. >> nothing is going to bring my father back. following ferguson, missouri and new york city phoenix arizona is the latest city dealing with the white police officer killing unarmed african american man. >> last night 150 people marched through phoenix to protest tuesday's shooting which began with the officer trying to break up a suspected

drug deal. after chasing the suspect to his apartment, the officer opened fire thinking the suspect was reaching for a gun. instead he was putting his hands in his pocket to conceal a pill bottle. >> because with a problem that is happening all over america and now so close to home, it's kind of hard to ignore. >> the 34-year-old leaves behind four daughters. while he was not armed, police say they did find marijuana and a semi automatic handgun in his car. time is 6:38. back here at home bart is trying to make it easy for riders that bring bikes to bart stations. bart has a new partnership. it's with a bicycle group. and it's to prevent bikes from being stolen. you know more about the safety measures passengers can expect. good morning, ryan. good morning, to you. stolen bikes are a major problem. not just in bart but throughout the bay area.

from 2006 to 2011 there was a 20% increase in bicycle thefts. but with more people riding bart, at least from bart's standpoint that means adding more bike lockers like you see right here, but also educating about how to keep your bike secure. representatives from bike east bay will be on hand at bart stations during the evening commute hours starting now until the summer of 2015. sharing bicycle security tips, handing out free theft prevention materials, and handing out discount vouchers to keep your bikes secure. bart encourages riders that don't need your bikes to use bike parking. bart currently has a secure bike station to park bikes at four stations. but the plan is to expand those options to more stations. is there is also a bike station

welcome back. it's 6:43. a 16-year-old girl is in custody this morning accused of running over a san leandro police officer. it's a story we first brought you yesterday during mornings on 2. investigators say the teenager was driving a stolen car when she ran over the officer while trying to get away prompting police to open fire. the officer was seriously hurt but is expected to survive.

>> there appeared to be a substantial amount of blood at the scene that was from the police officer who is doing nothing more than responding to a routine call for service. >> the girl surrendered hours later and is now facing charges of attempted murder and auto theft. she had a minor injury to her hand believed to the result of police gunfire. police also arrested a 19-year- old man who was riding in the stolen car. two men from pittsburgh have been arrested in connection to a shooting death of a father and son in the south bay. the two 20-year-old men seen in these photos they were arrested last month at walnut creek. police say they are suspected of shooting and killing a father and son inside their south san jose home back in september. now police haven't given us any other details about the shooting. they are still asking anyone with information to come forward. happening today about 30 minutes from now president obama will announce his

nomination of ashton carter as the next secretary of defense. carter was previously served -- had previously served as deputy defense secretary. he would replace chuck hagel who announced his resignation last week. time is 6:45. in case you didn't know the warriors are hot. they have tied a franchise record. they won their 11th straight game. clay thompson he just went stupid. right here. look at this. nothing but net. he led the warriors with 23 points. 112-85 win over the pelicans last night. warriors are by the way leading the nba. they have a 16-2 record. they will play the chicago bulls in chicago tomorrow. the warriors also had an extra man on their roster last night. now he didn't play, but his story it's a real inspiration. talking about 20-year-old trent frost. he is from australia.

he first met andrew in mel born three years ago. but he beat the odds and he was there at court side with the warriors last night. >> pretty inspirational story. back then he wasn't given a lot of time. he pulled through and obviously he's still here. so he's a bigger role model than any of us. >> i can't thank those guys enough. they have gone above and beyond with the one-day contract they set up. >> it's safe to say mr. frost is cool. he signed a one-day deal through the make a wish foundation. frost played basketball before he became ill. his sister there was his bone marrow donor and it ultimately saved his life. 6:46 is the time.
