a verichal look that oregon wil be in the championship game. the way that we saw arizona close out the season, since they loss to arizona. are they trending that they could be a national title winner? >> i think the oregon ducks are that kind of football. they look like they can be at the end, i think, against whoever it is. and it's very difficult to say who is going to win tomorrow and how it's all going to play out. but i got to say, mark helfrich, what an amazing job he really did this year. i was one of those guys that really thought at the beginning of the year, that oregon was at a crossroads, how stanford was without a running back. i thought, without chip kelly's personality, aliotti is gone. what is going to be oregon's

battle cry? and helfrich did it in the same way that david shaw seemed to have done it. he kept it going and kept the domination going. helfrich has a different personality. carries himself than chip kelly. but he's kept it going in a very impressive way. and it seems like, these guys really believe in what they have going on. i don't see a lot of flaws in this team, other than the way they play defense. >> if you look at the top six teams, take it further, because we don't know how it's going to play out tomorrow, i see every team aversion of the spread offense. all the way down from baylor to ohio state, tcu, florida state. they're all very similar. >> who is different? >> the one team that's different, alabama. the confidence i see -- oregon if and when they get matched up against alabama, they do have

and that breaking news is in oakland tonight where once again protesters blocked traffic on the freeway. and within the last hour, officers moved in and started making arrests. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. another night of protests around the nation and here in

the bay area. in oakland once again hundreds gathered and marched for hours and some of them took out their anger over recent police killings by shutting down interstate 880 in both directions near downtown oakland. cristina rendon is live. >> reporter: police officers across the street at the police department just waiting in case these protesters do come back toward this area. at one point they did stop right here and did not let protesters go on to the interstate at this point. but like you said we did follow protesters around the downtown area. two groups converged. at one point they did ship down a portion of i80. and at last check they were at the check station. arrests are being made in yet another protest so far since last week.

>> reporter: downtown oakland looked like it was preparing for a storm. the kind created by vandals who have left their mark here before. but protesters tonight here say that wasn't their goal. >> that really doesn't do anything. that doesn't get any points across. >> reporter: the walk came to a head near the oakland police department where protesters were met by authorities. >> we're putting our hand up because that's what michael brown did, he said don't shoot. >> reporter: it's another part of the protest called black lives matter. some protesters made their way on to interstate 880 a dangerous problem for chp and drivers. >> when suddenly everybody stopped that's how we get rear end collisions which can result in injuries. >> but the majority say they don't want to cause trouble. >> the face of this movement is very peaceful and there are people out here of all backgrounds, all genders, all

union square tonight. one of the protesters shot this video of the group marching into the powell street b.a.r.t. station to hold a die in. this is the third night that protests have disrupted traffic in the city. our storm watch coverage continues tonight after another round of much needed rain reaches the bay area. tonight's downpours come after a brief break in the wet weather. while we do need the rain it is causing some problems. we have team coverage tonight. ktvu's debora villalon is live in marin county where people are dealing with rising water. but we begin with bill martin live in our weather center, bill. >> reporter: scattered showers tonight. some people getting wet, others not. it really depends where you are. let's go to live storm tracker ii it's right on top of us. the heavy rains we've had for a time, let's show you the current shot here. we'll stop it and you can see those yellows up toward black

bringing to the sierra. the usgs says the quake measured 3.9. it struck at around 6:15 near the san andres fault. new at 10:00, a special send off tonight for a youth football team for richmond. they are on their way to the national championships in florida. and for almost all of them this is actually the first time they've ever been on an airport. those boys are all between the ages of eight and 11 and they won their regional title last month. the problem is they didn't have the problem to fly back east for the nationals. >> just hours after our last story about the team aired, donations poured in thanks to generous viewers. amber lee was there tonight as the boy's boarded the plane for the trip of a lifetime.

inside sfo, as the students wait to board their plane. champs boost the team's spirit already high. two dozen boys worn hoodies especially for this trip. >> how many of you haven't been on a plane before? it's your first time, are you ready? >> reporter: a first for many of these youngsters ages 8 to 1. >> what was your reaction when you found out you could go fly? >> i feel kind of nervous but it feels good at the same time. >> reporter: feels good this 11- year-old tells me to be away from richmond where two of his friend were shot at a corner store. wrong place at the wrong time. >> too many people getting murdered and i don't want to end up like one of my friends or anybody. >> reporter: a chance to see they can overcome the odds. their anxious mothers waiting to see them off. a journey they couldn't afford

the pac12 championship game took center stage at levi's stadium. tonight's game is another bright spotlight for the bay area's new stadium. ktvu's scott reiss was at the game and he joins us now live outside levi's stadium where there's a will the of happy people dressed in green and yellow today, scott. >> reporter: no doubt julie. there was a concern about attendance on a rainy friday night. the attendance was solid. announced crowd 7,216. to the naked eye not quite as many but still respectable nonetheless. most of people here were wearing green and yellow. they were duck fans and oregon fans always travel well especially when the stakes are as high as they were tonight. the game a blow out in favor of oregon. that combined with the

the cherry on top of an already great season. we have developing news tonight in san jose where police are investigating a homicide right now. a man was shot and killed this evening at alam rock avenue and north capital avenue. it happened around 8:15 this evening. ktvu has learned that the man may have been shot as many as seven times outside an asian restaurant that is in a shopping center where there's also a jack-in-the-box. police are just beginning their investigation and right now they're not releasing any information. steve jobs made a video taped deposition about six months before he died three years ago. and it was played today in federal court in oakland. apple is accused of violating antitrust laws by forcing customers to buy ipods to keep listening to their digital music instead of cheaper music players. courtroom distances said jobs

appeared bored, blunt and sarcastic at times. a woman accused of the death of an executive due to heroin overdose appeared in court today. she also faces prostitution and drug charges. prosecutors said tickleman and hayes were on his yacht when tickleman injected hayes with a deadly at -- deadly doze of heroin. >> the evidence we're missing is related more to forest hayes, who he is. what's his character, his habits. his compulsions. >> police say surveillance video shows tickleman did nothing while hayes layed downing. her attorney says that the video shows the opposite. that tickleman was in a state of panic. we're talking about the

theft of copper wire. an rubin found out the problem has gotten so bad in san jose that the city has been forced to take some drastic action. >> this san jose neighborhood has been in the dark thanks to the the thieves who raid the street lights for cooper wire. >> everywhere we turn there's stolen wire. >> reporter: the problem was so big city crews couldn't keep up. >> three years ago we were seeing thefts occurring at the rate of 10 to 15 locations per month. last year that had increased to about 30 to 40 and now we're up to 40 to 50 per month. >> reporter: so san jose is taking action. allocating $500,000 to combat cooper wire theft and hiring more crews. >> we've essentially tripled our staffing to deal specifically with theft repair. >> reporter: that makes a total of three crews working nonstop trying to get those lights back

on. they've just began installing these metal lids to keep the thieves from coming back. >> we'll go to a new place and pull wire and two weeks later the wire is stolen again. now it's a metal lid that slows things down. >> reporter: owners are grateful that it will work. >> no one is going to steal it again. >> reporter: city crews say they won't be far behind. >> it's ongoing. it's not slowing down. doesn't seem like to me any way. >> reporter: there is still a backlog of lights out thanks to cooper wire theft. an rubin, ktvu channel 2 news -- ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. we're getting reports of heavy rain up around santa rosa and san helena. very heavy rain in the napa region right now. the oranges represent wiper on full. it's coming down pretty hard. you get a break out in sonoma. these showers are going to spin through the neighborhoods

tonight between now and 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning. you're going to hear some on the rooftops. a few showers moving on through 92. the south bay has been left out of san jose nothing right now. but as we get into the next three hours or so, i expect the showers are going to light up there. so here's the computer model at 1:00 a.m. this is tonight. you see these oranges and red. this is some significant rainfall. that's what i showed you up in pa. that's at 1:00 a.m., then at 4:00 a.m. you see things start to clear out a little bit. by 8:00 a.m. most of the showers have moved south of the area. that's your saturday morning, saturday afternoon, doesn't look too bad. there's a few showers around but i think it's all morning stuff then it's gone. we get into sunday when cloudsic kraoez -- clouds increase and there's another chance sunday. we'll give you the sunday forecast and next week looks like some very significant rainfall kind of like what we just saw a few days ago with

there are new developments in the federal corruption case against six san francisco police officers. tonight two of them are facing several years in prison after being convicted by a jury today. ktvu's david stevenson says it was gift cards that turned out to be a key element in the case. >> reporter: the case was sparked by the 2011 release of surveillance video that show plain clothed officers raiding rooms. it led to allegations from the public defenders office that some of those officers were stealing money and property from criminal suspects. >> there's no place in the san francisco police department and there shouldn't be in any police department for a dishonest cop. >> reporter: today a grand jury found the officers guilty on two counts of wire fraud.

and conspiracy to defraud federal programs. >> mr. beringer was very optimistic coming into this case. he was hopeful for a not guilty verdict. he's crushed and literally disappointed. >> reporter: the case included allegations that the men stole $500 from a drug deal and $2,000 from the backyard of a newark drug dealer. >> these officers have not only betrayed the trust of the public but of the police department. >> i certainly think that changed the government's case. i certainly do. i mean, it changed the case completely. >> reporter: the two officers remain out of custody and are set for sentencing in february and march of next year. their attorneys say they could face five to eight years in prison. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news.

in los angeles, crews are working to clean off bill cosby's star on the iconic hollywood hall of fame. vandals reportedly sprayed rapist on the star. detectives met with a woman who says she was assaulted by cosby. the meeting comes one day after the police chief called on anyone who believes cosby sexually abused them to come forward. a stalemate has caused customers to be without cable this afternoon. cbs has blacked out in 18 markets including los angeles and new york. a special gavel passing ceremony was held today at the civil courts.

back now to our storm watch coverage, and the view tonight of the snow covered sierra. many skiers and snow boarders got started on the season. sugar bowl is scheduled to open tomorrow for the first time this season. and bill is back with us tonight. >> he's in the weather center tracking our conditions. >> not a lot of help for ski resorts with this current snowstorm or the next one. temperatures outside are above freezing for the most part. snow levels about 5,000 feet tonight. and as this shower activity moves through. you see the or -- origins of this storm. it's subtropical air or low latitude stuff. you have snow levels that are

is remembering the victim as a generous man who is always helping others. >> reporter: a family in mourning for the man who would do anything for anyone. >> he would still come here and help us out before he would help himself out. he was just a joyful guy. >> reporter: 78-year-old jose rosell took the walk to his brother's house where he often took care of him. rosell was crossing the street when a pickup struck him then headed south on skyline also known as highway 35. >> the driver was aware that he struck a person as the vehicle stopped momentarily and then that's when it fled from the scene. >> reporter: police say they're confident the truck has serious front end damage. >> there was a witness who described the vehicle as a white american made pickup truck. they believe it was a chevy

titled album. morning phase by beck and x by edge shiren. the grammys air this january. more now on our breaking news. the continuing protest going on in downtown oakland. we want to show you live pictures here of the scene there in downtown oakland. and you can see the protests that have now turned a little violent here. broken windows on one of the businesses. this is very close to 14th and broadway. the protest started out peacefully earlier this evening. but then the protesters marched and took over part of 880 shutting it down in both directions and at one point were throwing bottles off the top of the freeway on to officers below. several people have been arrested but again you see now, some damage, more damage from these protests. these protests have been going on for a couple of weeks. first because of the situation in ferguson. then because of the situation
