good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2", sunday, december 7th, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. there was rain worry but it was a perfect affair. hopefully today a little bit of the same or maybe not? >> partly sunny skies. i think we'll have more cloud cover, some of us saw cloud cover return in the afternoon. look at the beautiful sunrise shot. isn't that nice? i could gaze at this all day. we're not tracking rain, you could see the radar beams are going, nothing to pick up. we're looking at patchy dense fog this morning and that is a concern for the north bay valley locations as well as the east bay valley locations. in addition to the clouds, if you're traveling, visibility down to a quarter mile for some of our valley spots.

just be on guard getting up early this morning. backing up here, show you first sign of the next system, here off the coastline. this one is going to be very weak. in fact the models have trended drier in the last 24 hours so i think as we get into tonight and tomorrow morning, there will be a very slight chance of scattered showers, especially over the north bay. but for most of us it's going to be a mostly cloudy, mainly dry forecast today as well as tomorrow. 58 degrees now in concord. 56 oakland. 58 san francisco. a cool 46 in santa rosa to start. if you're going to the coliseum, mostly cloudy skies, we'll call it partly sunny skies, northeasterly breeze at 10 miles per hour. when we come back we'll look at the afternoon highs for your region and i'm tracking a more powerful storm in the extended forecast coming up. we start with some new information about a violent police protest that lasted well into the morning. let's look at what happened.

[screaming] >> this is video from last night. berkeley police are telling us that they did arrest about 10 people. there's no word yet on what kind of charges those individuals will face but we do know some demonstrators threw objects at the officers. you can see it here. more than 100 officers from local law enforcement agencies were on hand and a couple of officers did get hurt. one was hit with a sandbag and dislocated a shoulder. there was also looting. we know a radio shack and wells fargo were both hit, you can see things were getting tense there as the officers were pushing back at this point in the protests. vehicles were also vandalized including berkeley police cars. >> reporter: jabbed by a baton, pushed back from the police

line. as people hurled rocks at officers. >> reporter: peaceful protesters struggled to keep a raging crowd in control. and their own heads above the smoke. followed by - rubber bullets which shot towards the direction of the next scene. >> reporter: looters smashing windows at trader joe's. knocking crates on to university avenue and stealing wine from the store. people trapped in their cars had nowhere to turn. and neither did we. people en masse accosted, anyone reporting the mayhem. violence and looting. >> it's just fighting violence with violence that we don't need. >> reporter: which so clearly distracts from the message.

>> why are people looting? we're peacefully protesting. we shouldn't take things from stores that are not bothering us. >> reporter: she fights to protect the shattered store window. >> people taking things, it's not rights. i'm sorry but they are not fighting against us. >> reporter: as others felt compelled to clean up the mess. >> that was katie reporting from berkeley. in san francisco about two dozen protesters were arrested when they blocked traffic at powell and market streets. that area was actually filled with holiday shoppers at the time and the area had to be shut down for nearly two hours in the middle of the day. the protests there centered on the high profile police killings in new york and ferguson, missouri as well as several local cases. one marcher said she lost her son to a police shooting in san francisco in october. >> he was shot seven times.

and they never let me identify his body. >> from is a demonstration planned for shane evans this afternoon. coincidentally the san francisco mayor ed lee is in new york city today. he's there for the u.s. mayors summit on immigration and joined by about two dozen mayors including los angeles, new york and detroit mayors. they are discussing how to implement president obama's executive order last month which potentially spares up to 500 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. police want to make sure the battle of the bay is on the field, not the stands. in 2011 a man was beaten unconscious, two people shot in the parking lot, the raiders are bringing in additional security today with undercover units to control the parking lots as well as the stands. fans are routinely kicked out

for unruly behavior at all nfl stadiums. the alameda county sheriff's department tells the tribune this season deputies ejected on average 49 people at each raiders home game. on average of 10 people arrested for public intoxication or fighting. oakland police ejected a total of 247 fans at raider games last year. 52 people were ejected at as games e. this is video of the first regular season game behind the two teams at the coliseum since 2002. this video is of a preseason game in 2010 when the 49ers backup quarterback was david carr, the brother of the current raiders quarterback derek carr. allie is at the stadium. we're six hours from kickoff and there are cars behind you already. >> reporter: the fans got here well before sunrise. in fact we were here 5:30 this morning and this was already a parking lot. this is 56th avenue where we

are standing. turn the camera around and up to 15 minutes ago the line of cars went all the way out on to 880. this off-ramp was totally backed up. 15 minutes ago the chp came out and cleared everyone out. they are moving through cars now. everyone behind me parked they made the cutoff. these are the first fans heading in the stadium. you can see they got their raider nation flags, and a lot of fan spirit. so let's keep walking and show you the atmosphere. cars parked, they've got their music on, a lot of people standing around, seen people coming out and selling snacks and selling battle of the bay t- shirts. mostly raiders fans here because this is raiders home territory. eleasha ritter was here 5:00 this morning. why do fans get here so early? >> it's the raider way. >> how big a game is this? >> huge. it's the bay area rivalry. it's a big deal.

>> reporter: it's why you're expecting the parking lot to be totally packed? >> prepaid parking already sold, so they have limited cash. you have to be here early to make sure you get in the lot. >> reporter: you glad made the cutoff? >> yes, go raiders. >> reporter: earlier today we found the one 49ers fan who is here in the line. he came here from sacramento. with a car full of four friends who are raiders fans. here's what he had to say. who do you think is going to win? >> do i have to say anything? >> 9ers suck! >> here we go, already. all day, all day. it's ok. we'll take the w anyways. >> reporter: the last time the raiders and 9ers faced off was back in 2011 and as mike mentioned there were problems at that game. fans we talked to say they hope to see none of that this time, they just want this to be a very friendly rivalry.

four recreational boaters were killed. a pot luc will be at the marina from noon to 5:00. an opportunity for friends and family members to share stories and remember the victims. with new information about the window washer who fell from an 11-story building in san francisco. according to the san francisco chronicle he's still in critical condition. 58-year-old pedro perez of san leandro fell into a moving car last month and cal osha is investigating the fall. concerns about ice at the mount diablo has caused it to be moved. this year the ceremony will be in the oak room of the library at cal state east bay's concord campus. it's the seconds year in a row that the ceremony has been moved because of the weather. today does mark 73 years since the japanese attacked pearl harbor. a sailor survived the raid.

for some that will be the headline as we get through the next couple hours. i'm seeing it from santa rosa into san jose. and livermore also reporting a little bit of patchy dense fog. so fairly widespread, no advisory in place. but something to be aware of because when it's patchy and really thick it could be very dangerous. it will catch you offguard. off the coastline here tracking a little bit of rain you can see being picked up off the monterey coastline i'm going to stretch it back a little farther and show you where the front of this system is. right back in here. so as we get through the next 24 to 36 hours we may have the possibility of a few sprinkles, sort of come our way. this is going to be a weak system. i think most of us are going to remain dry. i'm mentioning it because some of us may get a few light passing showers. there's that line, there's that front showing you this morning, as we get into sunday night into monday morning even monday afternoon i'm already into monday night and you saw what happens when it moves through. it really falls apart.

so we're going to leave you with partly sunny skies for the next 24 to 36 hours. and maybe a sprinkle tonight into tomorrow for some of us. it looks like it favors the north bay but for the most part we're mainly dry. i want to get all the way to wednesday, thursday, friday because this is when the stronger storm is going to arrive. so tuesday is going to be a drier day. wednesday will be a dry day because we're already at 5:00 and notice that rain line still over northern california. so we get into sunset, about 4:50, we're still mostly cloudy but mainly dry, we wake up thursday morning and the storm has arrived. so it's going to slip in while we sleep. at least that's what the models predict at this point. we're still a few days out. thursday is going to be completely wet and windy. as we get into friday morning we're on the back side of this system. and looks like, at this point next weekend will be mainly dry but again we have a stronger storm coming our way and could bring several inches of rain and sierra snow. it's going to be a cold system.

gene. >> 49ers need this game to improve their playoff chances but the raiders are 1-11 so for them this is a big game against the crosstown rival. looking for bragging rights. new this morning -- at least two people are dead after a powerful typhoon made landfall in the philippines. that typhoon sent thousands of people to shelters as winds gusted up to 110 miles per hour, knocked down trees and power lines. it's the same area with a super typhoon hit last year. people here in the bay area with families in the philippines are keeping a close eye on this storm. 7:38 -- new information about the failed rescue attempt of two hostages held by al- qaeda. the u.s. raided a compound in yemen in an attempt to free american journalist luke somers and south african teacher pierre corky. al-qaeda militants reportedly shot the two men as a team of navy seals moved in. the seals apparently lost the element of surprise when they were spotted just outside the compound.

the u.s. tried to rescue luke somers last month but militants moved him. >> inflicted serious damage on the captors but -- this time, this time they were unable to save luke. >> al-qaeda was reportedly going to release the west african to an inter234r5e6rb89d organization today so they would be home for christmas but there's word the white house may not have known about the release. it does not appear that a "washington post" reporter with deep bay area ties held in iran will be freed soon. jason rosean was born in san francisco. he wrote for the chronicle. he's been in iran for more than four months. the tehran government officially charged him yesterday in a 10-hour-long courtroom proceeding but there's no word on the specific charges he faces. his family did hire an attorney for him but that lawyer has not been allowed to visit him. more than 1,000 care packages are now headed to troops overseas, thanks to the

efforts of volunteers in napa. operation with love from home, is the name of the group, along with other volunteers met yesterday to put the care packages together. according to the napa valley register the organizer only thought they could send out about 500 packages this year that is because more than $5,000 worth of donations were damaged during the 6.0 quake in august but she says when people heard about the damage the donations just poured in. christmas is now less than three weeks away and one group is bringing joy to others in a big way. ktvu's john sasaki was there. >> reporter: at travis air force base in fairfield where the mission of protecting the nation is ongoing. ♪ jingle bell rock♪ >> reporter: there was another important mission 20 days before christmas. >> i remember that. >> reporter: camouflaged airmen

a couple of things brewing for us. a little one and a big one? >> exactly. the first one will be fairly weak. that is something we see coming in late tonight into tomorrow morning. the second system looks like a whopper and we are expecting that wednesday night into thursday. right now plenty of cloud cover, a lot of moisture in place. the clouds associated with that weak system, that is off-shore. if i back up a little you can pick up on a few radar returns off the coastline here. if i go back one step farther here's the front. right back in here. this is going to be working towards the bay area. so today mainly dry, can't leave out the possibility of just a sprinkle, i have to throw it in there. but for the most part we're mostly cloudy today, temperatures relatively mild, not too bad, a few sprinkles perhaps sunday night into monday. 54 degrees now in oakland. 54 napa. santa rosa, a chilly start, 48 degrees, in addition to the

cloud cover and cool conditions we have fog. santa rosa, san jose, livermore, all reporting visibility down to a quarter mile. so please be careful if you are going to be getting outdoors. the national weather service in sacramento has placed an advisory for some of the regions here close to water. areas like martinez, areas like like -- -- a light northeasterly breeze at the coliseum at 1:30 this afternoon. a quick look at the afternoon highs, widespread 60s in the forecast with partly sunny skies. i'll track a system for you moving in for tonight and then the bigger storm coming by mid- week coming up. we wanted to start this morning with some new information about a violent police protest that lasted well into the morning. let's give you a look at what happened.

>> you can see things got tense with people throwing things at police officers. this is video from last night. berkeley police say they arrested 10 people. no word yet on what charges the individuals will face. but we do know some demonstrators hurled bricks, and other objectsjects at the officers. more than 100 officers were on hand from local agencies and some did get hurt. one hit with a sandbag. one hit in the shoulder. katie shows us the clashes between protesters and police. >> reporter: jabbed by a baton. pushed back from the police line. at people hurled rocks at officers. peaceful protesters struggled to keep the raging crowd in control. and their own heads above the

smoke. followed by -- rubber bullets which shot towards the direction of the next scene. looters smashing windows at trader joe's. knocking crates on to university avenue and stealing wine from the store. people trapped in their cars had nowhere to turn, neither did we. en masse accosted anyone recording the mayhem. violent and looting. >> it's violence we don't need. >> reporter: which so clearly distracts from the message. >> why are people looting? there's no need. we're peacefully protesting. we shouldn't take things from stores that aren't bothering us. >> reporter: jube dominguez felted compelled to protect the store window. >> it's not right.

they are not fighting against us. >> reporter: as others felt compelled to clean up the mess. >> in san francisco, two dozen protesters were arrested when they blocked traffic. the video you're looking at is from powell and mark streets. you can imagine that was filled with holiday shoppers. that area had be to shuts down for two hours. this happened in the middle of the day. the protests were centered on the high profile cases in new york and missouri. there's another demonstration planned this afternoon. it's been a month since four we creational crabbers were killed -- recreational crabbers were killed. a pot luck will be held today in their honor from noon to 5:00. the organizer says it's a time to remember the victims.

the peak that shines once a year december 7th to honor victims and survivors of december 7, 1941 attack. the ceremony will be in oak room this time of the concord campus. the second year in a row that ceremony has been moved because of the weather. today does mark 73 years since the japanese attacked pearl harbor. a teenaged sailor from hayward survived that bombing raid. the veteran now 92 years old says he was not scared that day, just trying to survive. curious about his crops. he's a proud man walking his land. what is your favorite thing to eat that you grow? >> almost anything but apricots are the one. here's a big one. >> reporter: erred sivveira is quite the character. >> a gardener. a storyteller. >> i was the senior. >> reporter: at 92 years old, in hayward, takes us back to when he was 19. >> this was take on the ship.

>> reporter: at pearl harbor december 7, 19416789 >> man your stations, it's no joke. manp your stations. battle station. >> reporter: back row right with the mustache, silveira was an electrician on the uss san francisco, on battleship row preparing for repairs when the japanese attacked. 3,500 americans were killed or wounded. >> what am i going to do? i had one choice. either let me out or going to sink me. what do you want? i wanted to go out. >> reporter: silveira also searched aboard this ship. uss hornet in almeida now. and on the 75th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor, he will be aboard the hornets, and will share his memories of the day. a day his wife says he doesn't like to talk about too often. >> he didn't talk about it for years because like most of us too painful to talk about. >> reporter: with the little money they had the two who met

violence marred a preseason game in candlestick in 2011. one man was beaten unconscious, two shot in the parking lot. the raiders are bringing in additional security today with undercover units to patrol the parking lots as well as the stands. fans are routinely kicked out for unruly behavior at all stadiums. we're told this season dperpts ejected on average 49 people at each raiders home game. >> 52 people were ejected from oakland as games and 13 from warrior games. now just five hours away from the kickoff. the lat time the two teams faced each other in oakland with the preseason game in 2010. allie rasmus is live at the coliseum where it's raider nationers versus the 49er faithful i guess you can say.

>> reporter: that's right. we're on the other side of the coliseum. we're in an area called raider- ville. a free tailgate party the raiders have for any fan that comes to the game. it's a pretty family-friendly event. there's a rock claiming wall and bouncy house. if you keep walking here, there is where they will have an autograph session with the raiders alumnis. the raiderets will be performing in the back there. for anyone who wants to hang outs here and still catch the game as it's going you can watch it on the cxsgglue l. e.d. screen behind us. this is billed as the battle of the bay, niners and raider fans have been gearing up for it in the overnight hours. this is the scene outside of a 66th avenue gate at about 5:30 this morning. raiders fans in that line outnumbered 49ers fans about 2- 1, everyone was parked there waiting to get into the tailgating lot. the raiders fans say they know their teams had a rough season but the ones we talked to remained optimistic. >> we going from zero to 100.

it's a gloomy start to the day. giving you a live look there over oakland. just a few peeks of sunshine in the forecast. for your sunday. mainly dry conditions but rain moving in, i'll show you when coming up. actually i'm going to show you now apparently.

we've got those partly sunny skies, and some areas actually waking up with quite a bit of fog. we've got visibility to a quarter mile. here's another look at the sfo reporting delays up to 45 minutes for some arriving flights. we're going to be mainly dry for today for the outdoor activities but as i back up here just a little bit picking up on a little bit of rain off- shore. and this front back here is going to be working towards the bay area as we get into tonight and into tomorrow morning. this is a weak system and looks like most of us will remain dry but we're going to call for the possibility of a few scattered showers tonight into monday morning especially over parts of the north bay. the rest of us will be mostly cloudy, maybe a passing sprinkle and that's about it. tuesday is the dry day. wednesday mainly dry, looks like wednesday night into thursday, this next system rolls in and this one looks significant. we're talking about the possibility of heavy rain returning to the bay area. several inches of rain is what the forecast model is predicting at this time.

and very strong winds. we know that we're already very saturated and 9 very strong winds this time around this bring down power lines as well as trees. we'll be tracking that for you. again it's going to come in late wednesday night into thursday. temperatures now outside your door mostly cloudy skies and 54 oakland. 58 san francisco. 48 for santa rosa. this area here, a chilly start, and trailing behind the rest of us, most of us in the 50s and 58 concord but again it's cloudy. bring along the jacket if you're going to do some outdoor shopping this morning. afternoon highs for the second half of the day. 62 san rafael as well as berkeley. oakland 64. into the south bay more of the same. temperatures range in the mid- 60s, a few upper 60s, morgan hill 67. 67 santa cruz. partly sunny skies for today. we'll deal with that fog through the morning hours. then it will pretty much dissipate and be out of the way. temperatures tomorrow, very
