night two of chaos in the east bay from peaceful protests to violent demonstration. and right now authorities are trying to get traffic moving again after protesters block a busy highway. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. demonstrators are on the move tonight angry about the deaths of unarmed blacks in ferguson missouri and new york. a large group of protesters gathered in bergly and moved to highway 24th in oakland where they were able to block a freeway. cara liu was at the scene of

the violence. >> reporter: we did see a number of protesters get on the freeway state 24 earlier tonight as you mentioned. we also heard reports on social media of a chp vehicle on fire. where we are right now here at shadock and dwight you can see what happened to this radio shack. a couple of smashed windows. one reporter told me a vandal smashed his way in with a hammer. and several protesters tried to stop him. they were trying to stop the vandalism and the looting and one of them got hit in the head in the from says. a worker -- hit in the head by a protester. we did see what looked like tear gas being deployed several times in that area. some of the protesters were able to get on the freeway. we did lose site of them at that point. shortly after we did see a

number of additional chp units rushing into the area. this protest got started with well over 600 or 700 strong marching through berkeley. the chants ranged from no justice no peace, to shame on you to things we cannot repeat on television. stopping many times to rally the crowds. >> i'm really happy how everybody is. everything is going well. we're going to keep going we're not going to stop. >> i was out there last night for a little bit. i'm outraged that my tax dollars are going to police brutality and excessive force. >> i think we're all trying to stay as peaceful as possible. but we're all keeping eyes on the people that are bad. but we're ultimately just trying to get our message heard. that we're tired of the police brutality and incarceration rates are skewed definitely

toward minorities. >> reporter: i got off the phone with chp, eastbound 24 the back up and reopened at 9:30. right now the clairmont onramp is shut down so you want to avoid that area. last night these protests lasted well past midnight. are you getting a sense this is still going to continue. i understand there are still protesters on telegraph in berkeley. >> reporter: we definitely heard from a will the of the protesters saying they wanted to keep this issue front and center. that they weren't going to let up. that is certainly a likely possibility. >> cara liu, live in berkeley. berkeley businesses already on edge. wooden boards replaced glass at several stores and businesses. police made at least half a dozen arrests when things started to get out of hand. coming up at 10:30 tonight, we'll take a closer look at the damage from last night's protests. we have some developing news to tell you about right now. there has been an officer

involved shooting in oakland. and we're told it involves san leandro police. the incidents began in san leandro where a police car got shot up and an officer may have been injured. an apparent pursuit ended in oakland. we have no details on the police shoot out there but an unidentified person was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. we will be following this story and try to get you more details throughout this newscast. we'll also be posting updates on facebook and twitter. in other news it was a big day for bay area football fans. the two teams hadn 't met on the football field since 2011. but today 49ers traveled across the bay to take on the raiders. the game took a little bit of an unexpected turn as the nfl's worse team proved to be the best in the bay area. at least for today. not the kind of outcome a lot of people expected today. >> yeah, no but sports fans across the bay had this one very much on their radar.

it. they knew the fans were expecting. they gave a little extra because the fans were wanting this win. >> reporter: at the game today the alameda county sheriff's department made several arrests for fighting or drunkenness but no repeat of the serious problems this match has seen in the past. many fans remark the atmosphere was friendly, competitive but respectful. exactly what you would hope for from a big football family. heather. >> thanks, deb. more details now on the 49ers-raiders rivalry. the teams they used to be once a year in the preseason. but the violence that erupted at the game in san francisco back in 2011, ended their annual series. that's when multiple fans broke out inside and outside candle stick. a man was beaten unconscious and two people were shot in the parking lot that year. they both survived. a shooting outside a popular british pup in downtown san jose has left a man in

critical condition. the shooting happened on west santa clara street. a person at the pub told us the victim was a pub security guard but was off duty. he said that police made an arrest and that officers are looking at the pub surveillance video to try to determine what happened. there are also reports the shooting may have been connected with the battle of the bay rivalry but we have not yet been able to confirm that. new at 10:00, their story has reached thousands. young football players from richmond with a goal of playing in the national championship tournament. today their goal became a reality as the team stepped on a football field in florida. their trip was funded in part by all of you ktvu viewers and people aross the country touched by the story of the richmond steelers. our amber lee first told us about this story of the players trying to survive gun violence

lessons learned apparently saved lives in the philippines this weekend. mass evacuations to avoid a typhoon kept the number of casualties low. the storm made land fall yesterday killing at least three people but it was not nearly as deadly as last year's devastating typhoon hayan. a million people fled to shelters days in advance. including a man who lost his parents in hayan. >> i'm the last one that's alive, so i kept praying, please god help us, please god help us, please god help us. >> you think he did? >> yes. >> tonight that typhoon has

weakened but is still packing wind of about 70 miles per hour. today marks 73 years since the deadly attack on pearl harbor. the surprise assault to the naval base in hawaii was carried out by japanese bombers on this day to 1941. today thousands of veterans and survivors attended a ceremony at pearl harbor to remember that tragic day. about 2,500 people were killed and another 1,000 were wounded. the united states declared war on japan on december 8 marking the nation's entry into world war ii. described by president roosevelt as a date that will live in infamy. >> there are fewer and fewer of them each year. the survivors of the attack on pearl harbor. almost 3/4 of a century ago. >> we didn't go to bed for days. >> reporter: ferrell was in a

a grinch that stole some people's christmas. >> craig white remains in custody and on administrative leave from the fire department. he is scheduled to be arranged on tuesday. an accident in oakland has investigators asking for help to find the suspect. when the driver got out of the vehicle he was struck by a silver bmw. the bmw left the scene. the bmw driver is described as a black man wearing jeans, sneakers, a parka and baseball cap. he was seen carrying a briefcase and a bag. well most of the weekend has been dry right now. we're tracking some clouds out there and fog developing and some showers out to the north

of the bay area. here is the most recent imagery in mendecino. we have clouds in place. as we mentioned fog forming. turn to shower chances in the short term. we have a chance we could get a few scattered showers overnight tonight into monday morning. the best chance will be up to our north especially once again to the north. all that moisture is close enough we could squeeze out a sprinkle or light shower. that's a fairly weak system approaching northern california. but a much different storm in fact. a much stronger storm developing way offshore. you can see thousands of miles offshore. this will be the key factor of our forecast for thursday. we have a lot of rain to talk about. some very strong winds as well with that storm. we have the full update coming up at 3:00. we have new developments now on a shooting that happened a little more than an hour ago

in san leandro. the person being chased rammed a police car and shots were fired. the person in the vehicle that was being chased was killed. we just learned the san leandro police officer has been h ospitalized with injuries. the duke and dutchess of cambridge touched down in new york city today. the places that prince william and kate will visit during their stay. and kids that code. the increasing number of children learning computer programming skills.

jose. this week millions of students across the country will try their luck at computer programming. it's part of a nationwide effort called the hour of code. ktvu's azenith was in silican valley today where they're hoping to spark student's interest in technology. >> reporter: at hufner in palo alto the excitement is building. as children ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade are programming robots. >> in this day and age so many things are programmed with computer programs. >> reporter: through the nonprofit code.org and backed by big tech companies it encourages students to spend 60 minutes learning how to code.

well authorities are trying to keep tonight's protest from escalating in berkeley. that's what happened last night. police fired tear gas and after warning the protesters to disperse, they started throwing items. two officers were injured. the department also released the photo of a police vehicle that was vandalized. organizers had planned a peaceful protest last night just as they had tonight. noelle walker was in berkeley

today looking at the damage. >> reporter: broken glass and plywood where windows should be. in a season that's meant to share peace on earththere were signs that there was no peace on earth last night. >> it was pretty crazy. >> reporter: some protesters vandalized businesses. police used tear gas. there were rocks thrown, rubber bullets fired. while some protesters protected businesses trying to keep the focus on the message. >> it's just fighting violence with violence that we don't need. >> reporter: that's how a protest against police violence ended saturday night. moby thoebald was walking home when a store front was destroyed. >> it lapses into distraction. >> reporter: today the sign at radio shack said open but the metal curtain and boarded up

window said otherwise. trader joes was open inside but still showed scars outside. >> i didn't think anything like that could happen in berkeley. >> reporter: if chatter is any speculation, it seems there should be protests in the next several days. and it seems that the police department anticipated that, keeping barriers up outside of the department. >> it's not good for anyone. this doesn't help anyone. police militarization hurting everyone. it's really sad. >> we want to give you an update on the protests unfolding tonight in berkeley and berkeley. highway24 has reopened after police removed dozens of protesters from the roadway. about 700 demonstrators gathered around 5:30 at bancroft in berkeley. they are angry over the deaths

of unarmed blacks at the hands of police officers. protesters made their way toward shadock and 57th and in some cases some property was damaged along the way. the protesters ended up at highway 24. the highway patrol reported officers deployed tear gas into the crowd at some points. there are reports several people have been injured and were also just getting reports of at least two highway patrol vehicles being vandalized. this week richmond police will launch a program to wear body cameras on their clothing. the department says the cameras will help officers and the public. 15 uniformed officers will start wearing them tomorrow as part of a test program. in january about 100 more cameras will be available for the rest of the department. a study police camera for a southern california department found a 60% drop of the use of force and an 88% drop in the number of citizen complaints. happening now, lane closures on a busy south bay

roadway. the transportation authority says paving work will restrict lanes on stevens creek boulevard at the interstate 880 pass. one lane will be open in both directions during the work which is set to start at 10:00 tonight that's when it was supposed to start the lanes are set to reopen at 5:00 tomorrow morning. similar closures are set for monday and tuesday nights. it was 73 years ago today that the japanese attacked pearl harbor. a teenage sailor from hayward survived that day. he's now 92 years old. he says he wasn't scared he was just too busy trying to stay alive. our mike mibacl spoke with him at his home -- mike mibach. >> reporter: curious about his crop, he's a proud man. >> what's the favorite thing to eat that you grow? >> almost anything. but apricots are good.

sev era will share his memories, a day his wife says he does not like to talk about too often. >> he didn't talk about the service for years and years and years because it just, like most of us too painful to talk about. >> reporter: with the little money they had the two who met in hayward after the war married in reno september 9, 1950. >> she was treated well. >> oh hush. >> reporter: 54 years later the love. >> it was so quick i tell you i wasn't sure i was married or not. >> reporter: and laughter are still there. >> i just had how many 18 battle stars plus 21 i think all together. even got a good conduct one which really surprised me. >> i got about eight or nine trees, that's enough for me. >> reporter: after the navy, the sav era s had eight children, built homes and cared for his yard. >> right now would be pruning time. >> reporter: he calls it a hobby now but in his eyes you can see the passion. >> that's a sized apricot that will fit into that box right

lots of clouds all weekend long. right now we have partly cloudy skies. some fog trying to regroup as well. rain showers off to our north. here we go with the live doppler sweeps. not a lot of coverage the show you here in the bay area. i think we're going to show you a little bit more coverage. especially in the north bay. overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. the fog is regrouping. dense fog reports out to napa, fairfield at last check. we have a dense fog advisory overnight out toward solano county. current numbers are in the 50s. here is our live camera looking

out toward san francisco. right now just a partly cloudy sky. patchy clouds out there. a strong storm developing offshore. we'll be watching over that for the next few days. in the short term we mentioned the fog regrouping. a will the of moisture on the ground we know that with the rainfall from last week. once the temperature drops down to the dewpoint that's when the fog storms that'll be the case especially in the north bay valleys and east bay valleys with the process already happening right now. plan on that, low visibilities first thing tomorrow morning. and temperatures starting out monday will be in the upper 40s to 50s. a thursday storm developing. a lot of snow to work with all being pointed to the bay area. fairly week. just a cloud producer for us and a chance of a scattered shower primarily for the north bay. tuesday will be dry. but then by wednesday increasing clouds, chance of some rain by wednesday night. but here's what happens into thursday a very active weather

pattern sets up and heavy rain returns and strong gusty winds. that's the headline. strong storm into thursday. rainfall amounts will be on the order of two to four inches right on through friday but for the bay area hills five to 7- inches. winds also a big concern as well. could be gusting to over 60 miles per hour. i think we will have high wind warning and the possibility of power outages and high surf as well with waves easily topping 20 feet. so that could be a big concern by thursday. especially thursday morning. here we go with the clouds for tomorrow. chance of a scattered shower. tuesday dry. but then wednesday watch what happens the first wave of that rainfall approaching the bay area from the north. temperatures for tomorrow mainly in the 60s for afternoon highs. san jose 65. san mateo 62 degrees. your five day forecast, get ready for more rain. chance on wednesday. heavy rain. strong winds by thursday. showers likely into friday. looks like a well deserved break from saturday into sunday. last week's storm kind of set

it's your sunday sports wrap. i'm scott reiss. it was billed like the battle of the bay but really it was a battle of wills as in which team could will itself off the map. the 49ers coming off a thanksgiving turkey of an effort against seattle or the raiders who got rams 52-0. the raiders really touched flesh with mark davis before kick off. first play of the game perhaps a poor thing of things to come. ill advised, throw, picked off by moss to make it 3-0. later in the quarter, kap gets it going. finds his full back miller in the flat. seven will -- 7-3 san francisco. flash back if you will.
