right now a flood warning in effect for parts of the north bay over fears the russian river could overflow. plus a home red tagged after a massive tree came crashing through a senior home care facility. we'll tell you what neighbors say they heard when it happened. southern california dealing with major problems. it's so rough one rescuer had to be rescued himself.

pounding rain in the authority bay and flooding concerns. this is video taken a short time ago. the area gets hammered by another round of rain. i'm tori campbell. rosy >> we are looking at a very swollen river area. this is where we have the flood warning. giving you a shot here taken from stump town brewery. you can see how bad it is. a flood warning means that it is a reality. it is ongoing right now. let's switch over to our ktvu graphics. it is in the guerneville area. flood stage at 32 feet.

it is peaking at 33.3 feet. some areas already reporting flooding in that area including right along highway 116. that should say 116 at drake road. it is right in here at forest vail. this is at the level where the trailer park begins to flood as well. be careful out there if this is your area. i want to back it up and show you that a widespread flood advisory will continue until 9:00 this evening. that is issued by the national weather service. be on your guard. you can expect some flooding as well as debris flow. before i let you go we'll take a look at where the rain is falling at this time. let's start in the north bay. we are continuing to see light scattered showers. it looks a little more widespread through napa. you can see the richmond bridge seeing light rain at this time. across the beast bay it's

fairly light but steady. it looks like it is beginning to see a little bit of a break. down into the south bay we continue with showers with moderate to heavy over the area. san jose we'll get in a little bit closer and take a look where it is falling into san jose. the worst of it has passed through. we are not finished just yet. i'll push you through the futurecast and show you when we will finally get a break. >> thank you. even though the heaviest rain has moved on flooding is still an issue in petaluma. it was shut down near 101 because of standing water. drivers ditched cars during yesterday's storm. that roadway has since reopened to traffic. this area was overwhelmed by yesterday's heavy rain. several feet of water flooded as people and their pets waded through to higher ground. many of them were sent to a

near by shelter for the night. one family told us the rapidly rising water left them with a mess. >> all my stuff is getting ruined around christmas time. our presents and trees getting wet. we don't know when we'll be able to come home or if we'll have to find somewhere to live. >> it lead to a number of water rescues. about a dozen people working and driven to safety in high profile trucks. the powerful storm caused a close call for people in the east bay. brian flores is live where a huge tree came crashing down. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. a tree cutting company has been working to remove this tree that fell on the back of this home. quite frankly the people inside are lucky to be alive. [ speaking foreign language ] >> he said like when they sleep

he heard like a big sound, it's like a bomb. >> reporter: it may have sounded like one but it was actually mother nature. this time coming in a 90-foot uric liptous tree. >> my whole roof shook. >> reporter: it is what is a senior care home. five patients and three caretakers were in the home at the time with the tree landing inches away. >> took the roof out and the walls and the fence and narrowly missed the occupants, just very fortunate situation. >> with the amount of rain and wind these past 48 hours they say they responded to numerous calls of trees falling. >> another one fell, a larger oak tree. we figure we'll have more of them. with thunderstorms coming

through we figure we could have more potential. >> they are expected to be okay. they are currently staying at another senior care home across the street. >> pretty scary. we are next door. we are lucky. we are very lucky. >> reporter: the tree sits on a creek bank that has been known to flood before. there are other trees next to the one that fell. they will need to be analyzed by an arborist. we understand the tree needs to be remuffed before they determine whether it -- removed before they determine whether it to be livable or not. >> thank you. pg and e crews out repairing a power line. it came down a couple of hours ago. emergency crews blocked off the street and rerouted vehicle traffic until they cut power to the line. the fire department says the line broke off from an attachment to a home. they tell us that home was the

only one that lost power. a safeway super market in san jose is closed indefinitely after the rain caused part of the roof to collapse yesterday afternoon. it happened near silver creek road. firefighters say a 50 food square foot section of the roof came crumbling down. fortune fatly there were very few customers inside at the time. there was just one minor injuries. safety inspectors have red tagged the building until they are certain it is safe. highway crews worked past midnight to remove cars that became submerged here along ashby avenue near interstate 80. that is the roof of a car. people who live in this area say this section often has standing water even on dry days. as you can see yesterday's flooding created water levels as high as the roof of that car. most bay area students who

got to stay home from school are back in class today. one of our crews was in oakland this morning. kids and teachers returned. oakland and san francisco public schools returned today. they have also reopened. many parents we talked to today told us yesterday's day off was inconvenient but they made the most of it. >> it was a little inconvenient but fun to be home making christmas cookies and have an excuse to hang out and enjoy the i do -- the day. >> yeah. >> did you fun yesterday? >> yeah. >> reporter: what did you do? >> i played with my favorite toys. >> reporter: what is your favorite toys? >> legos. >> reporter: did you miss school yesterday? >> no. >> a few districts remain closed today and set to reopen on monday. southern california is now getting hit by the storm we

experienced yesterday. they have seen landslides and pretty dramatic rescues. two people were clinging to trees in the middle of the rain swollen l.a . river. a swift water rescue team was called out. one person was found and saved. the search continues for a second person. at one point a rescuer was swept downstream. they were swept downstream and had to be rescued by their own team. mud slides damaging homes. this is camarillo springs. you can see mud and rocks covering the streets. one man had to be rescued. 18 homes are red tagged. mud is blocking parts of the pacific coast highway. bart's new airport connector is out of service at this hour. a mechanical problem has shut

the u.s. senate expected to vote on a 1.1 trillion spending bill. the house approved a bill just before midnight last night. it was supposed to be the deadline. since house approval came so late they were given a 48 hour extension to go over it. democrats exposed some of the add ons but no one wants to see a government shutdown. final passage will pay for most government agencies through next september. a large group of african american congressional staffers teenage add protest on the steps of the u.s. capitol. they raised their arms in the hands up don't shoot gesture to

show their support for national protests against police aggression. tonight's debut of the annual bart safety escort program has been postponed because of more possible protests. it provides escorts for holiday shoppers returning to their cars after shopping in san francisco. the program has been canceled in anticipation of possible protests tonight. no word on when it is rescheduled to begin. head of highway patrol defending the actions of an under cover officer who pointed his gun at protesters in oakland. it shows the under cover officer holding a silver gun sideways. they say two under cover officers mixed in with the crowd of protesters. when someone out of them is police protesters began attacking them. at one point one of the officers drew his gun. >> i support his decision to

draw the weapon. his life was in jeopardy. [ indiscernible ] >> i think when you take police who are not accustomed to situations like this bad things are going to happen. >> the chp says the mission was to keep protesters off the highways. the district attorney is reviewing the incident. a man is in jail today accused of killing his landlord. police found the landlord's body inside a home early yesterday afternoon. they later arrested his tenant who lived in a garage at the home after a stand off that lasted into the night. homicide detectives believe the men had a heated argument the day before. police investigating the death of a pedestrian that was struck and killed. it happened yesterday evening. investigators say the man who died was walking in the crosswalk when the bus hit him.

police talking to the bus drive tore try to determine how it happened. >> all of that rain we received here in the bay area met quite a bit of snow up in the area. chains are required and on highway 50. chains are required starting at i'll dorado county. they tell us what they want mountain goers to know. >> get ready for winter travel as that storm that passed through the valley brought snow to the sierra here. we have got about 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground. it is expected to continue through the day here. many of the resorts reporting about a foot and a half after snow at the base. it is great going into this weekend. if you're planning oncoming up to the mountains this might be your first trip of the season up here for these winter driving conditions and chp saying be prepared. >> be prepared. make sure you have a full tank

of gas, plenty of warm clothes. i saw people in shorts and flip- flops putting chained on their vehicles. make sure you slow down and drive safe. >> reporter: and the scenes up here just beautiful with all of this new snow on the ground. make sure you're prepared. if you need the chains buy them down in the valley. they are cheaper down there instead of buying them up here at a premium. yesterday's storm created unusually big waves at lake tahoe. some sufficient offers didn't wait to take advantage. high winds turned the normally calm water into ocean-like swells. waves like this only happen every few years or so. the water temperature about a chilly 50 degrees. an iconic tree at pebble

beach has fallen victim to yesterday's storm. one of two cypress trees at pebble beach tossed over. you can see the red circle on the far left side of the screen, it was knocked down by high winds which included gusts up to 40 miles per hour. they were planted ten years ago. no word on whether member beach will replace the one that fell over. i sit so close to a wind. people are saying i thought the rain was over. >> you're right. we are not finished just yet. we are slowly beginning to see improving weather. the blizzard warning has expired. if high surf advisory has expired. yes, the rain continues to fall. giving you a live look where the scattered showers picked up. we got through the second half of the morning and now beginning to taper off some. i want to take you to our storm report here on storm tracker 2

just to verify how widespread this is. a lot of debris flow reported. you can see that this morning. we know the north bay has been hammered. let's get into the south bay. that came in at 9:30 this morning. off to the santa cruz mountains boulder creek reporting debris flow. i touched on it at the top of the hour. there is a flood advisory that will last excluding areas along contra costa county. be careful for us. we are still seeing flooding. if you come across the roadways covered in water turn around, don't try to cross. here is a look right now. right now scattered showers continue to fall. it's light but around santa rosa worried about that with that flood warning in place until tomorrow morning for the russian river. we continue to see showers fall along i-80, berkeley, oakland

finally getting a break. we had it steady earlier this morning. we have continued rainfall. light but steady. all of our small communities along 680 and traveling along 24 you'll find it. it is near areas in this area. how about the south bay. we have light scattered showers. it became moderate at times. now it looks like it is beginning to also wind down some. let's get into sierra. you can see over the last hour or so it really tapered off. we have more moisture working its way up. they will continue to have snowfall over the next 24 hours as well. rainfall totals from the system, this is preliminary, but wow, get a load of that. san francisco almost 3.35 inches. san jose 3 inches and the santa cruz mountains more than 4

inches. some of those numbers not the most impressive. take a look at this. not of napa reporting 6 inches. so as we get into the second half of the afternoon the scattered showers are going to continue to wind down. let me show you what i mean. as we get into the afternoon, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 we will continue to see it push through. the evening drive will be slick on the roadways. falling from the sky a few scattered showers. we'll leave in the possibility of maybe a little bit of active weather. the chance of a thunderstorm still in the forecast as well. temperature wise with cool cloudy conditions right now. we'll be in the 50s for the afternoon. 55 in concord and 56 expected for fairfield. the extended forecast here with your bay area weekend always in view. showers beginning to wind down as we get into the second half of the afternoon. the weekend looks mainly dry. >> okay. >> i think we can all smile

stocks sharply lower. also a report indicate that had growth in china, the world's second largest economy continues to slow. the dow down 202. the nasdaq down 26 and the s&p down 18. one of the top ten christmas displays in the world and it's right in our backyard. christmas in the park is back celebrating 35 years of holiday entertainment. is morning we got a special tour of the display located in downtown plaza. organizers say this year the decades long tradition comes with new features including a ginger bread house and pet adoption exhibit. we got more on how to get the most out of the event.

>> i would suggest come early afternoon and enjoy everything during the daylight. go have some dinner at one of our vendors and later on come back after dinner and enjoy the whole event at night. >> they say there's plenty of parking but after a couple of days of rain they expect to get a big crowd this weekend. today is national ugly christmas sweater day. the san jose sharks created a song putting their love for the holidays to a whole new level. [ music ] >> the song features players and sharks broadcasters. day are also selling ugly holiday sweaters including one for the sharks which has become quite a hit. we are still learning about more damage from last night's storm. we have crews live along the russian river. there's a flood warning in effect. we'll be checking in with them
