the special postgame edition of channel 2 news. >> it is the calm before another storm. the bay area is getting ready for more wet weather. we have live team coverage. ktvu's christina rendon spent the day with people cleaning up from last week's major system. we begin with ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo. >> the next wave of rain approaching the coastline right now. most of the weekend so far has been dry. that will be changing over the next few hours, but especially as we head into your monday forecast. right now our live stormtracker you see that frontal system offshore and a lot of moisture to work with moving in from the south and west. with that this will be the source of some energy to produce some moderate to even some heavy rainfall as we head into your monday forecast. here is a closer look at live stormtracker 2 right now. a few scattered showers towards parts of san mateo and santa cruz counties. santa rosa reporting some light rain off and on all afternoon. there we go with the rainfall

coverage closer sonoma, glen ellyn and the napa region as well. as far as the forecast model, we will keep the scattered showers very scattered in the forecast for tonight. but look what happens as we transition into your monday morning. plan on a wet monday morning commute. and then in fact this is an updated forecast, you see what happens. it delays the onset of the significant rainfall. it eventually moves on shore. so with that we could have some heavy downpours out there and possibly an urban and small stream flood advisory. i will let you know how much rainfall we can expect from the system. we have multiple rain clouds in the five-day forecast forecast in a few minutes. many people across the bay area have spent in weekend cleaning up and prepping for more wet weather. ktvu's christina rendon live in oakland where she learned that falling trees are still a big problem. christina. >> reporter: yeah, they are. as you see, you can take a look,

there is flashing lights behind us. that is from carey's tree service. they are removing a tree from a home here in oakland. these workers say that trees are likely going to keep falling because the ground is already saturated. just as flooded streets are drying out, the bay area is bracing for more rain. >> hopefully, the pumps work and everything works and it doesn't flood again when the rains come. >> reporter: residents at this mobile home park in redwood city are still cleaning up. >> this is our home. we have to clean it up and come back. a place to get our life back. >> reporter: aside from water damage, many people are seeing tree damage. the tree service is busy removing downed trees all over alameda and contra costa counties like this massive one that fell just six inches from the back door of deborah roberto's home in oakland. >> i opened the door and almost got poked in the eye by the branches. that's how close it was. >> we have to get that down tonight before it rains. >> because the ground is very wet right now and the trees are heavy on the the top.

>> reporter: and people are flocking the stores to prep again. last week's wet weather was the busiest mid december in history for hayward ace hardware. customers were buying boots, tarps, gut cleaners, and the store is expecting another shipment of sump pumps tomorrow after selling out. >> i went to ace hardware to purchase chalking for my window that is leaking. >> reporter: but for people in low-lying areas prepping does no good. >> there is not much we can do. i mean, you clean up the things so hopefully it doesn't get bad. just cope with it. >> reporter: and another thing people should plan for tomorrow is the morning commute. just leave a little early and give yourself some extra time because of that rain. heather. >> some good advice there. thank you. we have some new details now on those disturbing effigies that appeared on campus yesterday at uc berkeley. we have chosen not to show them because of their graphic nature. today a bay area artist collective is claiming responsetive for them.

the effigies depict three cardboard cutouts of black people lynched more than 100 years ago and the words i can't breathe were written on them. a it read in part that we apologize solely and profusely to black americans who felt further attacked by this work. the statement that was posted on twitter goes on to say that each image represents a true life ended by unimaginable act of ignorance and human cruelty. michael brown senior, the father of the unarmed black teenager fatally shot by a ferguson, missouri police officer, is set to speak tonight at the third baptist church with other parents who have also lost children to violence. yesterday brown was in washington, d.c. where he appeared at a rally with the reverend al sharpton. >> and from the pulpit to the golden gate bridge. more calls today for change. protesters highlighted the case

of eric garner. he was detained by new york city police in a chokehold. >> we will have more on today's protesters who brought their message to the iconic landmark. police are trying to track down a shooter who killed a man in east oakland. officers responded to a report of gunshots after 8:00 last night. police say the victim was suffering from several gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators have not released any information about a positive motive. a 19-year-old man is behind bars accused of stabbing his father multiple times at a home in solano county. investigators say that 42-year-old eric carter and his son, emanuel, were visiting family on cone coat around 7:30 last night when they got into an argument. things escalated. officers say emanuel pulled out a knife and stabbed his father

multiple times. he then drove off. the elder carter was rushed to the hospital. no word tonight on his condition. officers aaround midnight the son turned himself in and was arrested without incidentcism union city police hope a picture helps them find a mentally ill man. 47-year-old jason morton went missing thursday evening. he is 5'11", 135 pounds. he left his care facility on sand a cruise way and may have gone to the union landing shopping center. he suffers from bipolar disorder and skits frena. a meting for a sex ed class. this is video now from a school district meeting last month when parents first spoke out about their disapproval of the sex education program. some parents are upset that the class is being tout by employees from planned parenthood. they say the materials being used are too explicit. a number of parents are expected to speak out again on wednesday at the next school district meeting. a little christmas cheer

was happily received early this year when santa is handed out gifts in an oakland neighborhood today. there were smiles and giggles as the oakland firefighters random acts group passed out the presents. it followed a get together that included food and song. >> i think it's just a fun get together for our children and to give them something to be happy about because i see -- you know, our children go through so much. >> pane of the -- many of the children who walked away with a present are homeless. today's event was organized by the airline your women's outreach which serves displaced women and children. it's about to get really, really busy for postal workers. how many cards and letter will be processed tomorrow alone? the storm that pounded the bay area also did a number on southern california. why some areas fared worse than others.

the high-rise tower built more than 40 years ago crashed to the ground in less than ten seconds. the 17 story build was imploded this morning at a community college in south field michigan. a lucky student pushed the button to bring the north park plaza tower down. an anonymous bidder won the opportunity to do that, but gave the chance to student. the school says it plans to redevelop the site as an addition to its campus. the u.s. postal service is gearing up for the busiest day of the year. cars and letters and packages are expected to be processed. the post offices are offering service seven days a week, including christmas day. if you plan to send out holiday cards, december 0th is -- december 20th is the deadline to ensure delivery by christmas. after a weekend of improvements the alameda ferry will resume service tomorrow.

they moved the floating dock and installed new passenger gang ways. it allows the san francisco bay ferry to use any boat at the alameda station and add some flexibility for emergencies. the terminal reopens tomorrow morning at five. the massive storm that drenched the state on thursday has left a path of destruction in its wake and now residents are scrambling to recover from widespread floods and landslides before the next storm hits. in southern california mudslides sent rocks and debris flowing downhill sides that had little to no vegetation due to recent wildfires. cam re -- camarillo springs mud piled up ten feet high. dozens of homes were damaged and at least ten had to be red tagged. >> i knew there was two feet of mud behind me. soon the front window blew out. when the window blew out, i knew we had a complete flow of mud and water going through the house completely. >> some parts of california received up to five inches of rain. as we mentioned, another storm

is on the way. so let's check in now with mark tamayo to find out more about that wet weather heading to the bay area. >> nothing like last week though. i should probably say that right away. we are tracking more rain out there, but the intensity of last week's system, we generally don't see that in the course of maybe two to three years. the one we will see tomorrow is going to be respectable with moderate to heavy rainfall, but nothing like the one that moved through the region last thursday morning. here on the satellite already some rain showers up towards northern california. some showers developing offshore. mostly on the light side. here is a look at the current radar sweep, and you can't pick out some of the coverage out there. santa rosa reporting some light rainfall. some of this activity beginning to move into napa county. nothing too extreme, but enough to wet the roadways. and this coverage will be expanding in terms of the rainfall coverage expanding over the next few hours. especially for the monday morning commute. weather headlines right now, in fact, here is our live camera looking towards the bay bridge in san francisco.

mostly cloudy skies right now. forecast headlines for tonight, we do have a chance of scattered showers. more rain expected monday and tuesday. in fact, two systems, one for monday, another one for tuesday, and it looks like it will be dry on thursday. but the next system moving on shore tomorrow. in fact, here it is on the satellite. rainfall expectations for tomorrow about .75 inch to an and a half and a half in the north bay. winds out there, we do not have any winter weather advisories, but winds gusting to 30 to 40 miles per hour first thing top morning. overnight lows mainly in the 40s to the 50s. so wet monday morning commute. plan on that. san francisco 50 degrees. san jose 48. livermore in the 40s. we kind of have a sequence once again. next storm for tomorrow and then quickly behind it another cold front approaching. this will be the source of more rain as we head into the tuesday forecast. we are not going to go completely dry until next weekend. but at least for tomorrow, for your monday, periods of heavy rain. could be, as we said, some

gusty winds around 30 to 40 miles per hour. here is the updated forecast model. 10:00 tonight scattered rain showers to show you. early tomorrow morning the coverage increases out there. here we are at 6:00 and then we will take this to the 10 and 11:00 hour. you will notice those yellows and oranges beginning to show up offshore. that will gradually move into the region by midmorning, into the early portion of monday average. and during that time we could have an urban and small stream flood advisory kick in. heavier downpours. by late tomorrow afternoon we scale back on the coverage and intensity. that's setting up a break before that tuesday system moves into the region. in fact, we will put this into motion on tuesday, and there is that. the cold front associated with the second system. that second storm that moves on shore tuesday. we could have locally heavy downpours once again. forecast highs for tomorrow, once again in the 50s. so on the cooler side. santa rosa 53 degrees. remember last week we had temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees. but these numbers on the cooler side for tomorrow. here is a look ahead.

today marks two years since the sandy hook elementary school massacre. the gunman shot and killed 20 first graders and six teachers. 21-year-old adam lanza was armed with an assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine. he started the rampage by killing his mother and ended it with a suicide. newtown was the site of the attack. the town declined to hold any public events saying it is a time of personal remembrance. a pew research poll finds for the first time in 20 years more americans favor gun rights over gun control. 52% of those surveyed say it's more important to protect gun

ownership while 46% say it's more important to control the guns. a month after the newtown massacre the figures were reversed. in washington, d.c. today there was strong reaction to a report about the cia's use of torture after the 9/11 attacks. blasting the report, former vice president dick cheney. he said the techniques worked to protect the united states. >> we've avoided another mass casualty against the united states. we captured bin laden. we captured an awful lot of the senior guys of al-qaeda who were responsible for 9/11. >> people were angered by the attacks of 9/11, that their first motivation is do whatever is necessary to make sure there is never -- >> republican senator john mccain, a victim of torture during the vietnam war, said the techniques were torture and violated the again eve -- geneva convention. dianne feinstein released the

nearly 500 page report last week. it says the harsh techniques failed to work to get information about terroristic attacks. a long saturday night at the u.s. senate has ended with a trillion dollars plus spending bill. the vote funds the federal government through next september. as mike emanuel tells us, due to push back on immigration reform another threat of a shut down may happen much sooner. >> reporter: the threat of a government shutdown is off the table for now. the final vote was 56-40 last night in the senate on a $1 trillion plus package. senator cruz challenged the constitutionality of the measure because it provides some money for homeland security, which could be used to help implement president obama's executive order. the senate's top democratic ripped cruz. >> the junior senator from texas is wrong, wrong, wrong on several counts. most importantly for us this evening is an attack on this bill because it's not an

appropriate place it to question the constitutionality. >> reporter: there was a vote in the senate where reid was able to start the process of confirming two dozen of president obama's nominees. there is pressure to get it done before congress leaves because republicans take control of the senate next week and it will be harder to confirm the president's picks. some are criticizing senator cruz and mike lee of utah for fighting the government funding package. >> i don't think they accomplished anything expect perhaps harry reid was able to get nominations and appointments through the senate that he otherwise probably wouldn't. but i respect their right to exercise their responsibilities and their rights as senators. >> reporter: what the texas senator says reid would have done it sooner or later. >> he was going to force these nominations through either today or monday or tuesday. he was going to do it one way or

the other because that has been his tenure in power, has been an abuse of power, and it was wrong. >> reporter: so you won't hear the phrase government shutdown until at least late february. that's when homeland security money is due to run out and a republican-led congress is likely to challenge the president's unilateral action on immigration. in washington, mike emanuel, fox news. jeb bush fueled more speculation he will run for president by announcing he will release thousands emails and a book. about a quarter million emails. the son and brother of the former presidents say the release is to promote transparency and to let people make up their minds about him. bush is likely to be an early gop favorite. some don't like his positions on immigration and education. seaworld theme parks are going through a wave of changes. the company announced last week that its ceo is stepping down and that it's laying off about 300 workers across the u.s.

seaworld operates in amusement park in san diego with other locations across the country. tourism dove down with the recession and the company has been struggling in the wake of that critical documentary blackfish blaming the handling of killer wales for the death of a trainer. gas is at the lowest in years and industry analysts say the prices will keep going down as the price of crude oil continues to drop. the lower prices have some on wall street worried. >> reporter: a welcome sight for drivers in north texas this past week. customers filling up at this gas station for just $1.99 a gallon. according to gasbuddy.com, the national average for unleaded regular is now $2.57 a gallon. that's down from $2.92 last month. a year ago at this time it was $3.25. crude oil prices the lowest in five years. while this is good news for

consumers, it's taking a toll on the stock market. the dow posting its largest weekly drop since novato knowvember. >> north dakota has seen an economic boom. they have feeling the impact. ten rigs shutting down this month alone. >> the resource hasn't gone away. the profitability for it right now in the near term is bad. but the long-term profitability is tremendous. >> reporter: experts predict the price of crude will continue to drop. >> usually, when we fall on a long-term basis, it happens much quicker than you think. so we could fall hard and we could fall very quickly. >> reporter: but economist ben stein says last week's logs shouldn't worry -- losses shouldn't worry investors. >> the dow is up 30% in the last two years. that's an incredible unbelievable gain. the dow has been fabulously good. >> reporter: lower gas prices

the golden gate bridge draws tourists and locals alike. today it drew a few protesters. the group code pink stages a peace margin on the golden gate bridge every month. this time the event had a message that has been shared in protests across the country. >> we ain't got the to stop until the people are free. >> reporter: the group called code pink marches so frequently across the golden gate their pink props are faded. today a few new signs. >> this was a good opportunity to tie in the two messages. >> reporter: added to their regular message of peace. >> to justice. no peace. when people are opressed, they need justice and they need peace. >> michael brown and eric

group protest. >> i can here may neighbor crying i can't breathe. >> reporter: a big voice. noel walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> berkeley's next city council meeting is going to be at a bigger venue. last week's meeting was canceled when hundreds of demonstrators said they planned to attend and many of them actually gathered there outside the steps of city hall. they are upset about recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men. they are also upset about the way berkeley police handled recent protests in that city. it's 7:00 tuesday night the at long fellow missouri auditorium. according to the website, a special meet something also scheduled for 5:30 at that same location. detectives in san leandro are investigating a suspicious death. officers found man with a gunshot wound alone in a car

around 9:30 this morning near kennelle worth and victoria avenues. the man died at the scene. investigators have not released any other details. they are urging anyone with information to give them a call. we know the name of that sausalito landlord who was allegedly killed by one of his tenants last thursday. he has been identified as 57-year-old david richard morgan. police discovered his body inside a townhome on nevada street. the tenant, 57-year-old conrad justin smith, was arrested following an eight-hour stand-off with police. homicide detectives believe the two men got into a heated argument on wednesday. officers responded to a medical call for help and that's when they found morgan dead from apparent head trauma. the 27-year-old woman accused of punching a fellow shopper after the woman asked to quiet her 2-year-old in a store is slated to appear in court tomorrow. we want to show you surveillance video of that november 3rd incident. she faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

the 20-year-old victim told ktvu that she got into a verbal argument in the store and that she was waiting there in the parking lot when the victim left the store. bill cosby is breaking his silence for the first time since sexual assault allegations against him became public several weeks ago. he spoke with a "new york post" reporter who reached him by phone friday. cosby declined to talk specifically about the allegations, but he offered his expectations for how the media should cover the story. he said, quote, i expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism. when you do that, you have to go in with a neutral mind. more than 20 women have come forward claiming cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. the high cost of airfares could soon be at the center of a federal investigation. new york senator charles schumer is calling for the department of justice and the department of transportation to investigate why airfares are so high. this despite rapidly declining fuel costs and record profits

for airline companies. the senator's office says airline industry profits are on track to grow from almost $20 billion this year to $25 billion next year. petsmart announced today it is selling itself to a large investment firm. private equity firm vc partners will buy the chain for $8.7 billion. it is the largest leveraged buyout of the year. 2014 has seen many big mergers, but this one is unusual because a private firm is involved. secretary of state john kerry is in italy this evening focusing his attention on two political hotspots. the middle east and ukraine. he met with his russian counterpart. on it's the agenda a proposed bill for sanctions against russia and $350 million worth of military hardware to kiev. tomorrow he is set to meet with benjamin netanyahu to discuss an effort at the u.n. to set a timetable for israel's

withdrawal from palestinian stair -- within two years. the death toll from yesterday's deadly landslide has risen to at least 32 people. police, soldiers, and volunteers are using their bare hands to try to find survivors. more than 70 people are still reported missing. rains triggered the landslide that is said to have slept -- swept away 100 homes. and in haiti the prime minister is resigning. the president was supposed to call elections in 2011, but those elections have been postponed in a stalemate between the government and a group of opposition senators over electoral law. a 9-year-old man from texas who crossed the border into north korea is now denouncing u.s. domestic and foreign policy. the strange case unfolds as u.s. investigators say he may be behind the cyberattack of a

season, these numbers have been odded up. look at san jose. 232% of average with 8.5 inches of rainfall. right now on live stormtracker 2 a lot of rain. snow showers up to the north of clear lake right now. a closer look at the bay area radar, nothing too extreme. still a few showers out there to track, especially up in the north bay and out towards parts of the east bay. a chance of a few scattered showers tonight. rain mouches in tomorrow. could be heavy at times. no wind advises in place. here is the timeline. next storm for tomorrow is going to work with some tropical moisture moving in from the south and from the west. so this will add to the moisture with this system. then closely behind it you get an idea here there is not too much of separation between

these two cold fronts. our next storm moves in on tuesday. the short term for your monday forecast for a wet monday morning commute, especially for the mid to latter portions of the monday morning commute. periods of rain heavy at times. even a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms as well. especially with these brighter colors showing up in the forecast model. so here we are at 10:00. the rain showers pushing on shore coast side and around the bay. still some scattered rain showers at 7:00. once again the possibility of some thunder. and then storm number two moves on shore tuesday. so this could produce another round of moderate to heavy rainfall. then wednesday there is not as much coverage, but still a chance of some scattered showers into wednesday. looks like thursday though will be the day to be outside with dry conditions for thursday. and then once again by friday we could be tracking some more rain showers out there. so we are not going to go completely dry just yet. it could be off and on rainfall with probably more rain to talk about for monday and tuesday.
